29SiO and 30SiO J=1--0 maser signatures in Galactic AGB stars: the impact of third dredge up and turbulence velocity

J=1--0 SiO masers at 43 GHz have a well-established distinctive signature in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. 28SiO transitions typically dominate these spectra with the v=1 and v=2 emission being especially prominent and ubiquitous. Several predictions about enhanced 29SiO abundances in exotic stars prompt us to catalog the cases where 29SiO maser emission is enhanced compared to 28SiO. Our purpose is to catalog the known cases of 43 GHz spectra dominated by emission from isotopologue transitions (iso-dom spectra), to explore the commonalities in these sources, and to explain the cause of such maser signatures. Our catalog is drawn from SiO maser line ratios in the infrared-color-selected BAaDE survey and supplemented with a literature detection. The BAaDE catalog has cemented the typical signature of 43 GHz SiO masers, showing it is dominated by the v=1 and v=2 lines. Thirty-five iso-dom spectra are identified, meaning that this signature is seen in about 0.2% of our SiO maser-bearing stars. Their infrared colors are blue compared to other sources of the same period, similar to all sources displaying isotopologue masers. It is clear that the iso-dom nature of sources is variable, but unclear whether this is tied to stellar phase. A large abundance abnormality among the iso-dom sources is disfavored as the iso-dom sources do not appear significantly different from other stars which host isotopologue masers. Maser pumping, affecting the population inversions of specific transitions, can instead explain the enhanced signatures. We posit that iso-dom spectra appear in AGB stars which have undergone third-dredge up (enhancing the 29SiO and 30SiO abundance slightly) and which, in addition, are experiencing very low turbulence velocity (<1 km/s), creating a line overlap which pumps the maser transitions very efficiently.

Gravitational wave: generation and detection techniques

In this paper, we review the theoretical basis for generation of gravitational waves and the detection techniques used to detect a gravitational wave. To materialize this goal in a thorough way we first start with a mathematical background for general relativity from which a clue for gravitational wave was conceived by Einstein. Thereafter we give the classification scheme of gravitational waves such as (i) continuous gravitational waves, (ii) compact binary inspiral gravitational waves and (iii) stochastic gravitational wave. Necessary mathematical insight into gravitational waves from binaries are also dealt with which follows detection of gravitational waves based on the frequency classification. Ground based observatories as well as space borne gravitational wave detectors are discussed in a length. We have provided an overview on the inflationary gravitational waves. In connection to data analysis by matched filtering there are a few highlights on the techniques, e.g. (i) Random noise, (ii) power spectrum, (iii) shot noise, and (iv) Gaussian noise. Optimal detection statistics for a gravitational wave detection is also in the pipeline of the discussion along with detailed necessity of the matched filter and deep learning.

Long-period maser-bearing Miras in the Galactic center: period-luminosity relations and extinction estimates

We establish a sample of 370 Mira variables that are likely near the Galactic center (GC). The sources have been selected from the OGLE and BAaDE surveys based on their sky coordinates, OGLE classifications, and BAaDE maser-derived line-of-sight velocities. As the distance to the GC is known to a high accuracy, this sample is a test bed for reddening and extinction studies toward the GC and in Mira envelopes. We calculated separate interstellar- and circumstellar-extinction values for individual sources, showing that there is a wide range of circumstellar extinction values (up to four magnitudes in the K$_s$ band) in the sample, and that circumstellar reddening is statistically different from interstellar reddening laws. Further, the reddening laws in the circumstellar environments of our sample and the circumstellar environments of Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Miras are strikingly similar despite the different metallicities of the samples. Period-magnitude relations for the mid-infrared (MIR) WISE and MSX bands are also explored, and in the WISE bands we compare these to period-magnitude relationships derived from Miras in the LMC as it is important to compare these LMC relations to those in a higher metallicity environment. Emission from the envelope itself may contaminate MIR magnitudes altering the relations, especially for sources with thick envelopes.

Search for Highly-Ionizing Particles in pp Collisions at the LHC's Run-1 Using the Prototype MoEDAL Detector

A search for highly electrically charged objects (HECOs) and magnetic monopoles is presented using 2.2 fb-1 of p - p collision data taken at a centre of mass energy (ECM) of 8 TeV by the MoEDAL detector during LHC's Run-1. The data were collected using MoEDAL's prototype Nuclear Track Detector array and the Trapping Detector array. The results are interpreted in terms of Drell-Yan pair production of stable HECO and monopole pairs with three spin hypotheses (0, 1/2 and 1). The search provides constraints on the direct production of magnetic monopoles carrying one to four Dirac magnetic charges (4gD) and with mass limits ranging from 590 GeV/c^2 to 1 TeV/c^2. Additionally, mass limits are placed on HECOs with charge in the range 10e to 180e, where e is the charge of an electron, for masses between 30 GeV/c^2 and 1 TeV/c^2.

Magnetic field-assisted spectral decomposition and imaging of charge states of NV centers in diamond

With the advent of quantum technology, nitrogen vacancy ($NV$) centers in diamond turn out to be a frontier which provides an efficient platform for quantum computation, communication and sensing applications. Due to the coupled spin-charge dynamics of the $NV$ system, knowledge about $NV$ charge state dynamics can help to formulate efficient spin control sequences strategically. Through this paper we report two spectroscopy-based deconvolution methods to create charge state mapping images of ensembles of $NV$ centers in diamond. First, relying on the fact that an off axis external magnetic field mixes the electronic spins and selectively modifies the photoluminescence (PL) of $NV^-$, we perform decomposition of the optical spectrum for an ensemble of $NV$s and extract the spectra for $NV^-$ and $NV^0$ states. Next, we introduce an optical filter based decomposition protocol and perform PL imaging for $NV^-$ and $NV^0$. Earlier obtained spectra for $NV^-$ and $NV^0$ states are used to calculate their transmissivities through a long pass optical filter. These results help us to determine the spatial distribution of the $NV$ charge states in a diamond sample.

Opportunities in Flavour Physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.

Sub- and above barrier fusion of loosely bound $^6$Li with $^{28}$Si

Fusion excitation functions are measured for the system $^6$Li+$^{28}$Si using the characteristic $γ$-ray method, encompassing both the sub-barrier and above barrier regions, viz., $E_{lab}$= 7-24 MeV. Two separate experiments were performed, one for the above barrier region ($E_{lab}$= 11-24 MeV) and another for the below barrier region ($E_{lab}$= 7-10 MeV). The results were compared with our previously measured fusion cross section for the $^7$Li+$^{28}$Si system. We observed enhancement of fusion cross section at sub-barrier regions for both $^6$Li and $^7$Li, but yield was substantially larger for $^6$Li. However, for well above barrier regions, similar type of suppression was identified for both the systems.

Sub-barrier fusion excitation for the system $^7$Li+$^{28}$Si

The sub-barrier fusion excitation functions are measured for the first time for the system $^7$Li +$^{28}$Si by the characteristic $γ$-ray method in the energy range $E_{lab}$= 7-11.5 MeV. The results show an enhancement, below the barrier, by about a factor of two when compared with the one-dimensional barrier penetration (1D BPM) model. Introduction of coupling with the rotational 2$^{+}$ state (1.779MeV) of the target improves the fit somewhat, but still an enhancement of about 25-40% remains.

Solar arcades as possible minimum dissipative relaxed states

In our work, we have proposed the arcade structures as minimum dissipative relaxed states (including both the viscous and resistive channels) pertaining to a two-fluid description of the plasma. The obtained relaxed state is non force-free in nature and appropriate to an open system with external drives. The Euler-Lagrange equations are solved in Cartesian coordinates subject to the existing photospheric boundary conditions. The solutions are seen to support flow-containing arcade like magnetic field configurations with inherent dissipative properties that may play an important role in the coronal heating. An interesting feature observed is the generation of different types of arcades with the variation of a single parameter characterizing the relaxed state. Also, recent observations with the LASCO coronagraph on board the SOHO spacecraft suggest that the helmet streamers originating from the sun may have an internal triple-arcade structure. The two-fluid relaxed state obtained here is also seen to support such structures.

Anisotropy of electron momentum distribution in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_(8+d)$ superconductor studied by positron annihilation technique

The temperature dependent (30 K to 300 K) Doppler broadening of the positron annihilated g-radiation (DBPAR) measurement has been carried out on single crystalline Bi-2212 high Tc superconducting sample along two different crystallographic orientations. It has been observed that throughout the temperature range the electron momentum distribution has a relatively large value along the crystallographic c-axis than a-b plane. The temperature dependent DBPARL analysis shows a step like increase of S-parameter at the temperature region 92 K to 116 K.

Structure of the proton drip line nucleus $^{17}$F

The odd $A$ proton drip line nucleus $^{17}$F has been studied in a semi-microscopic model which couples proton quasiparticle motion to the vibrational motion of the neighbouring even-even $^{18}$Ne core. The experimentally observed low lying excitation spectrum, electric quadrupole moment, magnetic dipole moment, $B(E1)$ and $B(E2)$ values have been fairly well reproducd. The calculated rms radius of the first excited state is well reproduced and is found to be larger than that of the ground state which agrees with the experimental observation.
