Collective states from random interactions

The anharmonic vibrator and rotor regions in nuclei are investigated in the framework of the interacting boson model using an ensemble of random one- and two-body interactions. Despite the randomness of the interactions (in sign and size) we find a predominance of L(P)=0(+) ground states and strong evidence for the occurrence of both vibrational and rotational band structure.

Algebraic Models of Hadron Structure II. Strange Baryons

The algebraic treatment of baryons is extended to strange resonances. Within this framework we study a collective string-like model in which the radial excitations are interpreted as rotations and vibrations of the strings. We derive a mass formula and closed expressions for strong and electromagnetic decay widths and use these to analyze the available experimental data.

Nuclear structure from random interactions

Low-lying states in nuclei are investigated using an ensemble of random interactions. Both in the nuclear shell model and in the interacting boson model we find a dominance of $J^P=0^+$ ground states. It is shown that this feature is not due to time reversal symmetry. In the shell model, evidence is found for the occurrence of pairing properties, and in the interacting boson model for both vibrational and rotational band structures. Our results suggest that these features represent general and robust properties of the model space, and do not depend on details of the interactions.

Collective states in nuclei and many-body random interactions

Low-lying collective states in nuclei are investigated in the framework of the interacting boson model using an ensemble of random many-body interactions. It is shown that whenever the number of bosons is sufficiently large compared to the rank of the interactions, the spectral properties are characterized by a dominance of L(P)=0(+) ground states and the occurrence of both vibrational and rotational band structures. This indicates that these features represent a general and robust property of the collective model space.

Cluster states in nuclei as representations of a U(n+1) group

We propose a description of cluster states in nuclei in terms of representations of unitary algebras U(n+1), where n is the number of space degrees of freedom. Within this framework, a variety of situations including both vibrational and rotational spectra, soft and rigid configurations, identical and non-identical constituents can be described. As an example, we show how the method can be used to study alpha-clustering configurations in 12C with point group symmetry D(3h).

Band structure from random interactions

The anharmonic vibrator and rotor regions in nuclei are investigated in the framework of the interacting boson model using an ensemble of random one- and two-body interactions. We find a predominance of L(P)=0(+) ground states, as well as strong evidence for the occurrence of both vibrational and rotational band structures. This remarkable result suggests that such band structures represent a far more general (robust) property of the collective model space than is generally thought.

Sensitivity of tensor analyzing power in the process $d+p\to d+X$ to the longitudinal isoscalar form factor of the Roper resonance electroexcitation

The tensor analyzing power of the process $d + p \to d + X$, for forward deuteron scattering in the momentum interval 3.7 to 9 GeV/c, is studied in the framework of $ω$ exchange in an algebraic collective model for the electroexcitation of nucleon resonances. We point out a special sensitivity of the tensor analyzing power to the isoscalar longitudinal form factor of the Roper resonance excitation. The main argument is that the $S_{11}(1535)$, $D_{13}(1520)$ and $S_{11}(1650)$ resonances have only isovector longitudinal form factors. It is the longitudinal form factor of the Roper excitation, which plays an important role in the $t-$dependence of the tensor analyzing power. We discuss possible evidence of swelling of hadrons with increasing excitation energy.

An algebraic model of baryon spectroscopy

We discuss recent calculations of the mass spectrum, electromagnetic and strong couplings of baryon resonances. The calculations are done in a collective constituent model for the nucleon, in which the resonances are interpreted as rotations and vibrations of a symmetric top with a prescribed distribution of the charge and magnetization. We analyze recent data on eta-photo- and eta-electroproduction, and the tensor analyzing power in deuteron scattering.

On the dominance of J(P)=0(+) ground states in even-even nuclei from random two-body interactions

Recent calculations using random two-body interactions showed a preponderance of J(P)=0(+) ground states, despite the fact that there is no strong pairing character in the force. We carry out an analysis of a system of identical particles occupying orbits with j=1/2, 3/2 and 5/2 and discuss some general features of the spectra derived from random two-body interactions. We show that for random two-body interactions that are not time-reversal invariant the dominance of 0(+) states in this case is more pronounced, indicating that time-reversal invariance cannot be the origin of the 0(+) dominance.

A local anharmonic treatment of vibrations of methane

The stretching and bending vibrations of methane are studied in a local anharmonic model of molecular vibrations. The use of symmetry-adapted operators reduces the eigenvalue problem to block diagonal form. For the 44 observed energies we obtain a fit with a standard deviation of 0.81 cm$^{-1}$ (and a r.m.s. deviation of 1.16 cm$^{-1}$).

Algebraic treatment of three-body problems

We discuss an algebraic treatment of three-body systems in terms of a U(7) spectrum generating algebra. In particular, we develop the formalism for nonlinear configurations and present an algebraic description of vibrational and rotational excitations of symmetric (X_3) and asymmetric tops (XY_2 and XYZ). The relevant point group symmetry is incorporated exactly.

Algebraic treatment of the hyper-Coulomb problem

A completely algebraic treatment of the six-dimensional hypercoulomb problem is discussed in terms of an oscillator realization of the dynamical algebra of SO(7,2). Closed expressions are derived for the energy spectrum and form factors.

Exactly solvable models of baryon structure

We present a qualitative analysis of the gross features of baryon spectroscopy (masses and form factors) in terms of various exactly solvable models. It is shown that a collective model, in which baryon resonances are interpreted as rotations and vibrations of an oblate symmetric top, provides a good starting point for a more detailed quantitative study.

Interacting boson models of nuclear and nucleon structure

Interacting boson models provide an elegant and powerful method to describe collective excitations of complex systems by introducing a set of effective degrees of freedom. We review the interacting boson model of nuclear structure and discuss a recent extension to the nucleon and its excited states.

A symmetry adapted approach to vibrational excitations in atomic clusters

An algebraic method especially suited to describe strongly anharmonic vibrational spectra in molecules may be an appropriate framework to study vibrational spectra of Na$^+_n$ clusters, where nearly flat potential energy surfaces and the appearance of close lying isomers have been reported. As an illustration we describe the model and apply it to the Be$_4$, H$_3^+$, Be$_3$ and Na$_3^+$ clusters.

Electromagnetic and Strong Decays in a Collective Model of the Nucleon

We present an analysis of electromagnetic elastic form factors, helicity amplitudes and strong decay widths of non-strange baryon resonances, within a collective model of the nucleon. Flavor-breaking and stretching effects are considered. Deviations from the naive three-constituents description are pointed out.
