Next-to-leading-order QCD Corrections to Higgs Production in association with a Jet

We compute the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections to the Higgs pT distribution in Higgs production in association with a jet via gluon fusion at the LHC, with exact dependence on the mass of the quark circulating in the heavy-quark loops. The NLO corrections are presented including the top-quark mass, and for the first time, the bottom-quark mass as well. Further, besides the on-shell mass scheme, we consider for the first time a running mass renormalisation scheme. The computation is based on amplitudes which are valid for arbitrary heavy-quark masses.

Two-Loop Four-Fermion Scattering Amplitude in QED

We present the analytic evaluation of the two-loop corrections to the amplitude for the scattering of four fermions in Quantum Electrodynamics, $f^- + f^+ + F^- + F^+ \to 0$, with $f$ and $F$ representing a massless and a massive lepton, respectively. Dimensional regularization is employed to evaluate the loop integrals. Ultraviolet divergences are removed by renormalizing the coupling constant in the ${\overline{\text{MS}}}$-scheme, and the lepton mass as well as the external fields in the on-shell scheme. The analytic result for the renormalized amplitude is expressed as Laurent series around $d=4$ space-time dimensions, and contains Generalized Polylogarithms with up to weight four. The structure of the residual infrared divergences of the virtual amplitude is in agreement with the prediction of the Soft Collinear Effective Theory. Our analytic results are an essential ingredient for the computation of the scattering cross section for massive fermion-pair production in massless fermion-pair annihilation, i.e. $f^- f^+ \to F^- F^+$, and crossing related processes such as the elastic scattering $f F \to f F$, with up to Next-to-Next to Leading Order accuracy.

Evaluating two-loop non-planar master integrals for Higgs + jet production with full heavy-quark mass dependence

We present the analytic computation of a family of non-planar master integrals which contribute to the two-loop scattering amplitudes for Higgs plus one jet production, with full heavy-quark mass dependence. These are relevant for the NNLO corrections to inclusive Higgs production and for the NLO corrections to Higgs production in association with a jet, in QCD. The computation of the integrals is performed with the method of differential equations. We provide a choice of basis for the polylogarithmic sectors, that puts the system of differential equations in canonical form. Solutions up to weight 2 are provided in terms of logarithms and dilogarithms, and 1-fold integral solutions are provided at weight 3 and 4. There are two elliptic sectors in the family, which are computed by solving their associated set of differential equations in terms of generalized power series. The resulting series may be truncated to obtain numerical results with high precision. The series solution renders the analytic continuation to the physical region straightforward. Moreover, we show how the series expansion method can be used to obtain accurate numerical results for all the master integrals of the family in all kinematic regions.

Electroweak top-quark pair production at the LHC with $Z'$ bosons to NLO QCD in POWHEG

We present the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the electroweak production of top-antitop pairs at the CERN LHC in the presence of a new neutral gauge boson. The corrections are implemented in the parton shower Monte Carlo program POWHEG. Standard Model (SM) and new physics interference effects are properly taken into account. QED singularities, first appearing at this order, are consistently subtracted. Numerical results are presented for SM and $Z'$ total cross sections and distributions in invariant mass, transverse momentum, azimuthal angle and rapidity of the top-quark pair. The remaining theoretical uncertainty from scale and PDF variations is estimated, and the potential of the charge asymmetry to distinguish between new physics models is investigated for the Sequential SM and a leptophobic topcolor model.

Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to the Decay Width $H \to Z γ$

We present the analytic calculation of the two-loop QCD corrections to the decay width of a Higgs boson into a photon and a $Z$ boson. The calculation is carried out using integration-by-parts identities for the reduction to master integrals of the scalar integrals, in terms of which we express the amplitude. The calculation of the master integrals is performed using differential equations applied to a set of functions suitably chosen to be of uniform weight. The final result is expressed in terms of logarithms and polylogarithmic functions $\text{Li}_2$, $\text{Li}_3$, $\text{Li}_4$ and $\text{Li}_{2,2}$.

Light-quark two-loop corrections to heavy-quark pair production in the gluon fusion channel

We calculate the two-loop corrections to heavy-quark pair production in the gluon fusion channel which arise from diagrams involving a closed light-quark loop. The calculation is carried out by keeping the exact dependence on the heavy-quark mass. The analytic results are written in terms of logarithms, classical polylogarithms Li_n (n=2,3,4), and genuine multiple polylogarithms Li_{2,2}. The functional arguments are rational expressions of two independent external invariants and they are chosen in such a way that the functions are real in all the physical phase-space points. Through systematic changes in the functional basis, we obtain expansions of the results in both the production threshold and small mass limits.

Top-quark production at hadron colliders

The current theoretical predictions for the observables related to the top-quark pair and the single-top productions at hadron colliders are briefly reviewed. The theoretical predictions are compared to the experimental measurements carried out at the Tevatron and the LHC.

Two-Loop Leading Color Corrections to Heavy-Quark Pair Production in the Gluon Fusion Channel

We evaluate the two-loop QCD diagrams contributing to the leading color coefficient of the heavy-quark pair production cross section in the gluon fusion channel. We obtain an analytic expression, which is valid for any value of the Mandelstam invariants s and t and of the heavy-quark mass m. Our findings agree with previous analytic results in the small-mass limit and with recent results for the coefficients of the IR poles.

On the Generalized Harmonic Polylogarithms of One Complex Variable

We describe how to compute numerically in the complex plain a set of Generalized Harmonic Polylogarithms (GHPLs) with square roots in the weights, using the C++/GiNaC numerical routines of Vollinga and Weinzierl. As an example, we provide the numerical values of the NLO electroweak light-fermion corrections to the Higgs boson production in gluon fusion in the case of complex W and Z masses.

Quest for precision in hadronic cross sections at low energy: Monte Carlo tools vs. experimental data

We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. The radiative corrections fully or approximately implemented in the various codes and the contribution of the vacuum polarisation are discussed.

Top Quark Production at Hadron Colliders: an Overview

The study of the properties of the top quark is one of the main goals of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program. The experimental precision expected at the LHC requires the calculation of several top-quark related observables beyond leading order in the strong coupling constant. In this work we briefly review the status of the theoretical predictions for the top-quark production processes at hadron colliders. Special attention is devoted to recent progress in the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading-order corrections to the top-quark pair production cross section.

Two-Loop Planar Corrections to Heavy-Quark Pair Production in the Quark-Antiquark Channel

We evaluate the planar two-loop QCD diagrams contributing to the leading color coefficient of the heavy-quark pair production cross section, in the quark-antiquark annihilation channel. We obtain the leading color coefficient in an analytic form, in terms of one- and two-dimensional harmonic polylogarithms of maximal weight 4. The result is valid for arbitrary values of the Mandelstam invariants s and t, and of the heavy-quark mass m. Our findings agree with previous analytic results in the small-mass limit and numerical results for the exact amplitude.

Two-Loop QCD Corrections to the Heavy-to-Light Quark Decay

We present an analytic expression for the two-loop QCD corrections to the decay process b -> u W^*, where b and u are a massive and massless quark, respectively, while W^* is an off-shell charged weak boson. Since the W-boson can subsequently decay in a lepton anti-neutrino pair, the results of this paper are a first step towards a fully analytic computation of differential distributions for the semileptonic decay of a b-quark. The latter partonic process plays a crucial role in the study of inclusive semileptonic charmless decays of B-mesons. The three independent form factors characterizing the b W u vertex are provided in form of a Laurent series in (d-4), where d is the space-time dimension. The coefficients in the series are expressed in terms of Harmonic Polylogarithms of maximal weight 4, and are functions of the invariant mass of the leptonic decay products of the W-boson.

Bhabha Scattering at NNLO

We review the status of the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to large angle Bhabha scattering in pure QED. After discussing the electron-loop and photonic corrections, we focus on the recently calculated two-loop virtual corrections involving a heavy-flavor fermion loop. We conclude by assessing the numerical impact of these corrections on the Bhabha scattering cross section at colliders operating at a center of mass energy of about 1-GeV.

Two-Loop QED Heavy-Flavor Contribution to Bhabha Scattering

We briefly review the status of the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to large angle Bhabha scattering in pure QED. In particular, we focus on the analytic calculation of the two-loop virtual corrections involving a heavy-flavor fermion loop, which was recently completed. We conclude by assessing the numerical impact of these corrections on the Bhabha scattering cross section at colliders operating at a center of mass energy of 1 GeV and at the future ILC.

Two-Loop Fermionic Corrections to Heavy-Quark Pair Production: the Quark-Antiquark Channel

We evaluate the fermionic two-loop QCD corrections to the heavy-quark pair production process in the quark-antiquark channel. We obtain analytic results which are valid for any value of the Mandelstam invariants s and t, and of the heavy quark mass m. Our findings confirm previous results for the analytic evaluation in the small-mass limit and numerical results for the exact amplitude. We furthermore provide the expansion of the two-loop amplitude at the production threshold s ~ 4m^2.

Calculation of the Two-Loop Heavy-Flavor Contribution to Bhabha Scattering

We describe in detail the calculation of the two-loop corrections to the QED Bhabha scattering cross section due to the vacuum polarization by heavy fermions. Our approach eliminates one mass scale from the most challenging part of the calculation and allows us to obtain the corrections in a closed analytical form. The result is valid for arbitrary values of the heavy fermion mass and the Mandelstam invariants, as long as s,t,u >> m_e^2.
