Final-State Interaction as the Origin of the Cronin Effect

Instead of adhering to the usual explanation of the Cronin effect in terms of the broadening of the parton transverse momentum in the initial state, we show that the enhancement of hadron production at moderate $p_T$ in d+Au collisions is due to the recombination of soft and shower partons in the final state. Such a mechanism can readily explain the decrease of the Cronin effect with increasing rapidity. Furthermore, the effect should be larger for protons than for pions.

Gluon depletion and J/psi suppression in pA collisions

The gluon distribution of a nucleon propagating through a nucleus can change depending on how far the penetration depth is. It is a nonperturbative process that we describe by an evolution equation. The kernel of the integral equation is to be determined by a phenomenological study of J/psi suppression in pA collision. The data of E866 on alpha(x_F) shows significant dependence on x_F at large x_F. It presents a feature that has not been explained by any hadronic absorption model. We show that gluon depletion is a simple mechanism that can account for it. The result has far-reaching implications on the role of partons in nuclear collisions.

Phenomenological Evidence for Gluon Depletion in pA Collisions

The data of J/psi suppression at large x_F in pA collisions are used to infer the existence of gluon depletion as the projectile proton traverses the nucleus. The modification of the gluon distribution is studied by use of a convolution equation whose non-perturbative splitting function is determined phenomenologically. The depletion factor at x_1=0.8 is found to be about 25% at A=100.

Parton Branching in Color Mutation Model

The soft production problem in hadronic collisions as described in the eikonal color mutation branching model is improved in the way that the initial parton distribution is treated. Furry branching of the partons is considered as a means of describing the nonperturbative process of parton reproduction in soft interaction. The values of all the moments, and $C_q$, for q=2,...,5, as well as their energy dependences can be correctly determined by the use of only two parameters.

Critical Behavior of Hadronic Fluctuations and the Effect of Final-State Randomization

The critical behaviors of quark-hadron phase transition are explored by use of the Ising model adapted for hadron production. Various measures involving the fluctuations of the produced hadrons in bins of various sizes are examined with the aim of quantifying the clustering properties that are universal features of all critical phenomena. Some of the measures involve wavelet analysis. Two of the measures are found to exhibit the canonical power-law behavior near the critical temperature. The effect of final-state randomization is studied by requiring the produced particles to take random walks in the transverse plane. It is demonstrated that for the measures considered the dependence on the randomization process is weak. Since temperature is not a directly measurable variable, the average hadronic density of a portion of each event is used as the control variable that is measurable. The event-to-event fluctuations are taken into account in the study of the dependence of the chosen measures on that control variable. Phenomenologically verifiable critical behaviors are found and are proposed for use as a signature of quark-hadron phase transition in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Erraticity Analysis of Soft Production by ECOMB

Event-to-event fluctuations of the spatial patterns of the final states of high-enery collisions, referred to as erraticity, are studied for the data generated by a soft-interaction model called ECOMB. The moments $C_{p,q}$ do not show simple power-law dependences on the bin size. New measures of erraticity are proposed that generalizes the bin-size dependence. The method should be applied not only to the soft production data of NA22 and NA27 to check the dynamical content of ECOMB, but also to other collision processes, such as $e^+e^-$ annihilation and heavy-ion collisions.

Universal behavior of multiplicity differences in quark-hadron phase transition

The scaling behavior of factorial moments of the differences in multiplicities between well separated bins in heavy-ion collisions is proposed as a probe of quark-hadron phase transition. The method takes into account some of the physical features of nuclear collisions that cause some difficulty in the application of the usual method. It is shown in the Ginzburg-Landau theory that a numerical value $γ$ of the scaling exponent can be determined independent of the parameters in the problem. The universality of $γ$ characterizes quark-hadron phase transition, and can be tested directly by appropriately analyzed data.

Enhanced J/psi suppression due to gluon depletion

The nonlinear effect of gluon depletion in the collision of large nuclei can be large. It is due to multiple scatterings among comoving partons initiated by primary scattering of partons in the colliding nuclei. The effect can give rise to substantial suppression of $J/ψ$ production in very large nuclei, even if the linear depletion effect is insignificant for the collisions of nuclei of smaller sizes. This mechanism offers a natural explanation of the enhanced suppression in the Pb-Pb data recently observed by NA50.

The Role of Gluon Depletion in J/psi Suppression

The depletion of gluons as the parton flux traverses a nucleus in a heavy-ion collision can influence the production rate of heavy-quark states. Thus the suppression of $J/ψ$ can be due to gluon depletion in the initial state in addition to nuclear and hadronic absorption in the final state. A formalism is developed to describe the depletion effect. It is shown that, without constraints from other experimental facts beside the $J/ψ$ suppression data in $pA$ and $AB$ collisions, it is not possible to determine the relative importance of depletion vs absorption. Possible relevance to the enhanced suppression seen in the $Pb - Pb$ data is mentioned but not studied.

Charm Correlation as a Diagnostic Probe of Quark Matter

The use of correlation between two open-charm mesons is suggested to give information about the nature of the medium created in heavy-ion collisions. Insensitivity to the charm production rate is achieved by measuring normalized cumulant. The acollinearity of the D momenta in the transverse plane is a measure of the medium effect. Its dependence on nuclear size or E_T provides a signature for the formation of quark matter.

Multiplicity Distributions of Squeezed Isospin States

Multiplicity distributions of neutral and charged particles arising from squeezed coherent states are investigated. Projections onto global isospin states are considered. We show how a small amount of squeezing can significantly change the multiplicity distributions. The formalism is proposed to describe the phenomenological properties of neutral and charged particles anomalously produced in hadronic and nuclear collisions at very high energies.

Factorial Moments of Continuous Order

The normalized factorial moments $F_q$ are continued to noninteger values of the order $q$, satisfying the condition that the statistical fluctuations remain filtered out. That is, for Poisson distribution $F_q = 1$ for all $q$. The continuation procedure is designed with phenomenology and data analysis in mind. Examples are given to show how $F_q$ can be obtained for positive and negative values of $q$. With $q$ being continuous, multifractal analysis is made possible for multiplicity distributions that arise from self-similar dynamics. A step-by-step procedure of the method is summarized in the conclusion.
