Unexpected phase locking of magnetic fluctuations in the multi-k magnet USb

The spin waves in the multi-k antiferromagnet, USb, soften and become quasielastic well below the AFM ordering temperature, T_N. This occurs without a magnetic or structural transition. It has been suggested that this change is in fact due to de-phasing of the different multi-k components: a switch from 3-k to 1-k behaviour. In this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with tri-directional polarisation analysis to probe the quasielastic magnetic excitations and reveal that the 3-k structure does not de-phase. More surprisingly, the paramagnetic correlations also maintain the same clear phase correlations well above T_N (up to at least 1.4T_N). This precursor regime has not been observed before in a multi-k system.

Unified character of correlation effects in unconventional Pu-based superconductors and δ-Pu

Electronic structure calculations combining the local-density approximation with an exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model show an intermediate 5f^5-5f^6-valence ground state and delocalization of the 5f^5 multiplet of the Pu atom 5f-shell in PuCoIn_5, PuCoGa_5, and δ-Pu. The 5f-local magnetic moment is compensated by a moment formed in the surrounding cloud of conduction electrons. For PuCoGa_5 and δ-Pu the compensation is complete and the Anderson impurity ground state is a singlet. For PuCoIn_5 the compensation is partial and the Pu ground state is magnetic. We suggest that the unconventional d-wave superconductivity is likely mediated by the 5f-states antiferromagnetic fluctuations in PuCoIn_5, and by valence fluctuations in PuCoGa_5.

Bulk properties and electronic structure of PuFeAsO

Here we present bulk property measurements and electronic structure calculations for PuFeAsO, an actinide analogue of the iron-based rare-earth superconductors RFeAsO. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data suggest the occurrence of an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=50 K. No further anomalies have been observed down to 2 K, the minimum temperature that we have been able to achieve. Structural measurements indicate that PuFeAsO, with its more localized 5f electrons, bears a stronger resemblance to the RFeAsO compounds with larger R ions, than NpFeAsO does.

Negative thermal expansion and antiferromagnetism in the actinide oxypnictide NpFeAsO

A neptunium analogue of the LaFeAsO tetragonal layered compound has been synthesized and characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The occurrence of long-range magnetic order below a critical temperature T_N = 57 K is suggested by anomalies in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and specific heat curves. Below T_N, powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic structure of the Np sublattice, with an ordered magnetic moment of 1.70(0.07) μ_B aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. No magnetic order has been observed on the Fe sublattice, setting an upper limit of about 0.3 μ_B for the ordered magnetic moment on the iron. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements exclude the occurrence of lattice transformations down to 5 K, in sharp contrast to the observation of a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic distortion in the rare-earth analogues, which has been associated with the stabilization of a spin density wave on the iron sublattice. Instead, a significant expansion of the NpFeAsO lattice parameters is observed with decreasing temperature below T_N, corresponding to a relative volume change of about 0.2% and to an invar behavior between 5 and 20 K. First-principle electronic structure calculations based on the local-spin density plus Coulomb interaction and the local density plus Hubbard-I approximations provide results in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Strong-coupling d-wave superconductivity in PuCoGa_5 probed by point contact spectroscopy

A century on from its discovery, a complete fundamental understanding of superconductivity is still missing. Considerable research efforts are currently devoted to elucidating mechanisms by which pairs of electrons can bind together through the mediation of a boson field different than the one associated to the vibrations of a crystal lattice. PuCoGa_5, a 5f-electron heavy-fermion superconductor with a record critical temperature T_c=18.5 K, is one of the many compounds for which the short-range, isotropic attraction provided by simple electron-phonon coupling does not appear as an adequate glue for electron pairing. Here, we report the results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in single crystals of PuCoGa_5. Andreev reflection structures are clearly observed in the low-temperature spectra, and unambiguously prove that the paired superconducting electrons have wavefunction with the d-wave symmetry of a four-leaf clover. A straightforward analysis of the spectra provide the amplitude of the gap and its temperature dependence, Δ(T). We obtain Δ(T -> 0) = 5.1 \pm 0.3 meV and a gap ratio, 2Δ/k_B T_c = 6.5 \pm 0.3, indicating that the compound is in the regime of strong electron-boson coupling. The gap value and its temperature dependence can be well reproduced within the Eliashberg theory for superconductivity if the spectral function of the mediating bosons has a spin-fluctuations-like shape, with a peak energy of 6.5 meV. Electronic structure calculations, combining the local density approximation with an exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model, provide a hint about the possible origin of the fluctuations.

5d-5f Electric-multipole Transitions in Uranium Dioxide Probed by Non-resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calculations. The results obtained demonstrate the high potential of NIXS as a bulk-sensitive technique for the characterization of the electronic properties of actinide materials.

Resonant x-ray scattering study of NpRhGa_5 and NpCoGa_5

We report a resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) study of antiferromagnetic neptunium compounds NpCoGa_5 and NpRhGa_5 at the Np M_4 and Ga K-edges. Large resonant signals of magnetic dipole character are observed below the Neel temperatures at both edges. The signals at the Np edges confirm the behaviour determined previously from neutron diffraction, i.e. the moments along [001] in NpCoGa_{5} and in NpRhGa_5 a reorientation of the moments from the c-axis direction to the ab plane. In the latter material, on application of magnetic field of 9 Tesla along the [010] direction we observe a change in the population of different [110]-type domains. We observe also a magnetic dipole signal at the Ga K-edge, similarly to the reported UGa_3 case, that can be interpreted within a semi-localized model as an orbital polarization of the Ga 4p states induced via strong hybridization with the Np 5f valence band. Quantitative analysis of the signal shows that the Ga dipole on the two different Ga sites follows closely the Np magnetic moment reorientation in NpRhGa_5. The ratios of the signals on the two inequivalent Ga sites are not the same for the different compounds.

Magnetic Excitations in NpCoGa5

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on NpCoGa$_{5}$, an isostructural analogue of the PuCoGa$_{5}$ superconductor. Two energy scales characterize the magnetic response in the antiferromagnetic phase. One is related to a non-dispersive excitation between two crystal field levels. The other at lower energies corresponds to dispersive fluctuations emanating from the magnetic zone center. The fluctuations persist in the paramagnetic phase also, although weaker in intensity. This supports the possibility that magnetic fluctuations are present in PuCoGa$_{5}$, where unconventional d-wave superconductivity is achieved in the absence of magnetic order.

Direct observation of electric-quadrupolar order in UO$_{2}$

We report direct experimental evidence for long-range antiferro ordering of the electric-quadrupole moments on the U ions. Resonant x-ray scattering experiments at the uranium $M_{4}$ absorption edge show a characteristic dependence in the integrated intensity upon rotation of the crystal around the scattering vector. Although quadrupolar order in uranium dioxide was advocated already in the 1960s no experimental evidence for this phenomenon was provided until now. We conclude with a possible model to explain the phase diagram of the solid solutions of UO$_{2}$ and NpO$_{2}$. We suggest that in the region $0.30 < x < 0.75$ neither the transverse nor the longitudinal quadrupole ordering can dominate, leading to frustration and only short-range ordering.

Spin dynamics of heterometallic Cr7M wheels (M = Mn, Zn, Ni) probed by inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering has been applied to the study of the spin dynamics of Cr-based antiferromagnetic octanuclear rings where a finite total spin of the ground state is obtained by substituting one Cr(III) ion (s = 3/2) with Zn (s = 0), Mn (s = 5/2) or Ni (s = 1) di-cations. Energy and intensity measurements for several intra-multiplet and inter-multiplet magnetic excitations allow us to determine the spin wavefunctions of the investigated clusters. Effects due to the mixing of different spin multiplets have been considered. Such effects proved to be important to correctly reproduce the energy and intensity of magnetic excitations in the neutron spectra. On the contrary to what is observed for the parent homonuclear Cr8 ring, the symmetry of the first excited spin states is such that anticrossing conditions with the ground state can be realized in the presence of an external magnetic field. Heterometallic Cr7M wheels are therefore good candidates for macroscopic observations of quantum effects.

A perturbative approach to J mixing in f-electron systems: Application to actinide dioxides

We present a perturbative model for crystal-field calculations, which keeps into account the possible mixing of states labelled by different quantum number J. Analytical J-mixing results are obtained for a Hamiltonian of cubic symmetry and used to interpret published experimental data for actinide dioxides. A unified picture for all the considered compounds is proposed by taking into account the scaling properties of the crystal-field potential.

Enhancement of rare-earth--transition-metal exchange interaction in Pr$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ probed by inelastic neutron scattering

The fundamental magnetic interactions of Pr$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ are studied by inelastic neutron scattering and anisotropy field measurements. Data analysis confirms the presence of three magnetically inequivalent sites, and reveals an exceptionally large value of the exchange field. The unexpected importance of $J$-mixing effects in the description of the ground-state properties of Pr$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$ is evidenced, and possible applications of related compounds are envisaged.

Resonant X-ray Scattering Study of Magnetic and Electric-quadrupole Order in U$_{0.75}$Np$_{0.25}$O$_2$

We have used element specific X-ray resonant scattering to investigate the M edge resonances in a single crystal of \unpo. Earlier neutron diffraction and Mössbauer studies had shown the presence of long-range AF order below T$_{N}$ = 19 K, with sizeable magnetic moment both on the U and the Np ions. RXS results confirm the presence of an ordered dipole magnetic moment on the Np ions, but also reveal the presence of an anti-ferro arrangement of the electric quadrupole moments on both U and Np ions, with the same propagation vector that defines the magnetic structure. From the azimuthal dependence of the intensities we are able to determine the exact configuration of the quadrupolar ordering. The intensities of Bragg peaks associated with magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole order have different temperature dependences. On cooling below T$_{N}$, the magnetic dipole order develops faster on the uranium ions, with magnetic order on the Np ions increasing at a lower rate. At the same temperature, quadrupolar order on both the U and Np ions occurs along with an internal Jahn-Teller lattice distortion.

Quantum-magneto oscillations in a supramolecular Mn(II)-[3 x 3] grid

The magnetic grid molecule Mn(II)-[3 x 3] has been studied by high-field torque magnetometry at 3He temperatures. At fields above 5 T, the torque vs. field curves exhibit an unprecedented oscillatory behavior. A model is proposed which describes these magneto oscillations well.

Macroscopic evidence of quantum coherent oscillations of the total spin in the Mn-[3x3] molecular nanomagnet

Molecular nanomagnets, besides promising to open new frontiers in technology, have attracted huge interest in the scientific community because they can exhibit the phenomenon known as quantum tunnelling of the magnetization, i.e. coherent fluctuations of the direction of the total spin vector. In this paper we study a different quantum phenomenon involving fluctuations of the magnitude of the total spin vector. These fluctuations are related to the mixing between states with different spin quantum number, and imply new macroscopic effects, which we theoretically investigated in the Mn-[3x3] grid.

Field-induced magnetic anisotropy in La0.7Sr0.3CoO3

Magnetic anisotropy has been measured for the ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 perovskite from an analysis of the high-field part of the magnetization vs. field curves, i.e., the magnetic saturation regime. These measurements give a magnetic anistropy one order of magnitude higher than that of reference manganites. Surprisingly, the values of the magnetic anisotropy calculated in this way do not coincide with those estimated from measurements of coercive fields which are one order of magnitude smaller. It is proposed that the reason of this anomalous behaviour is a transition of the trivalent Co ions under the external magnetic field from a low-spin to an intermediate-spin state. Such a transition converts the Co3+ ions into Jahn-Teller ions having an only partially quenched orbital angular momentum, which enhances the intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling and magnetic anisotropy.

Triple-q octupolar ordering in NpO_2

We report the results of resonant X-ray scattering experiments performed at the Np M_4,5 edges in NpO_2. Below T_0 = 25 K, the development of long-range order of Np electric quadrupoles is revealed by the growth of superlattice Bragg peaks. The electronic transition is not accompanied by any measurable crystallographic distortion, either internal or external, so the symmetry of the system remains cubic. The polarization and azimuthal dependence of the intensity of the resonant peaks is well reproduced assuming Templeton scattering from a triple-q longitudinal antiferroquadrupolar structure. Electric quadrupole order in NpO_2 could be driven by the ordering at T_0 of magnetic octupoles of Gamma_5 symmetry, splitting the Np ground state quartet and leading to a singlet ground state with zero dipole magnetic moment.

Observation of an incoherent thermally activated proton hopping process in calix-[4]-arene by means of anelastic spectroscopy

The anelastic spectrum of calix[4]arene was measured at two different vibrational frequencies. Three thermally activated peaks were detected. The lowest temperature peak can be described considering a continous distribution function of activation energies for the relaxation. This anelastic peak can be ascribed to a thermally activated hopping process of H atoms of the OH groups, corresponding to a flip-flop of the OH bond. From the results of the present study, it seems that anelastic spectroscopy is a good experimental technique to study atomic motion inside molecules at a mesoscopic (few molecules) level.
