Non-Equilibrium Dynamics and Superfluid Ring Excitations in Binary Bose-Einstein Condensates

We revisit a classic study [D. S. Hall {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 81}, 1539 (1998)] of interpenetrating Bose-Einstein condensates in the hyperfine states $\ket{F = 1, m_f = -1}\equiv\ket{1}$ and $\ket{F = 2, m_f = +1}\equiv\ket{2}$ of ${}^{87}$Rb and observe striking new non-equilibrium component separation dynamics in the form of oscillating ring-like structures. The process of component separation is not significantly damped, a finding that also contrasts sharply with earlier experimental work, allowing a clean first look at a collective excitation of a binary superfluid. We further demonstrate extraordinary quantitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results using a multi-component mean-field model with key additional features: the inclusion of atomic losses and the careful characterization of trap potentials (at the level of a fraction of a percent).

Polarized States and Domain Walls in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study spin-polarized states and their stability in anti-ferromagnetic states of spinor (F=1) quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. Using analytical approximations and numerical methods, we find various types of polarized states, including: patterns of the Thomas-Fermi type; structures with a pulse-shape in one component inducing a hole in the other components; states with holes in all three components; and domain walls. A Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis reveals that families of these states contain intervals of a weak oscillatory instability, except for the domain walls, which are always stable. The development of the instabilities is examined by means of direct numerical simulations.

Symmetry Breaking in Linearly Coupled Dynamical Lattices

We examine one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) models of linearly coupled lattices of the discrete-nonlinear-Schr{ö}dinger type. Analyzing ground states of the systems with equal powers in the two components, we find a symmetry-breaking phenomenon beyond a critical value of the squared $l^2$-norm. Asymmetric states, with unequal powers in their components, emerge through a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation, which, for very weakly coupled lattices, changes into a supercritical one. We identify the stability of various solution branches. Dynamical manifestations of the symmetry breaking are studied by simulating the evolution of the unstable branches. The results present the first example of spontaneous symmetry breaking in 2D lattice solitons. This feature has no counterpart in the continuum limit, because of the collapse instability in the latter case.

Cerenkov-like radiation in a binary Schr{ö}dinger flow past an obstacle

We consider the dynamics of two coupled miscible Bose-Einstein condensates, when an obstacle is dragged through them. The existence of two different speeds of sound provides the possibility for three dynamical regimes: when both components are subcritical, we do not observe nucleation of coherent structures; when both components are supercritical they both form dark solitons in one dimension (1D) and vortices or rotating vortex dipoles in two dimensions (2D); in the intermediate regime, we observe the nucleation of a structure in the form of a dark-antidark soliton in 1D; subcritical component; the 2D analog of such a structure, a vortex-lump, is also observed.

Discrete surface solitons in two dimensions

We investigate fundamental localized modes in 2D lattices with an edge (surface). Interaction with the edge expands the stability area for ordinary solitons, and induces a difference between perpendicular and parallel dipoles; on the contrary, lattice vortices cannot exist too close to the border. Furthermore, we show analytically and numerically that the edge stabilizes a novel wave species, which is entirely unstable in the uniform lattice, namely, a "horseshoe" soliton, consisting of 3 sites. Unstable horseshoes transform themselves into a pair of ordinary solitons.

Mobility of Discrete Solitons in Quadratically Nonlinear Media

We study the mobility of solitons in second-harmonic-generating lattices. Contrary to what is known for their cubic counterparts, discrete quadratic solitons are mobile not only in the one-dimensional (1D) setting, but also in two dimensions (2D). We identify parametric regions where an initial kick applied to a soliton leads to three possible outcomes, namely, staying put, persistent motion, or destruction. For the 2D lattice, it is found that, for the solitary waves, the direction along which they can sustain the largest kick and can attain the largest speed is the diagonal. Basic dynamical properties of the discrete solitons are also discussed in the context of an analytical approximation, in terms of an effective Peierls-Nabarro potential in the lattice setting.

Skyrmion-like excitations in dynamical lattices

We construct discrete analogs of Skyrmions in nonlinear dynamical lattices. The Skyrmion is built as a vortex soliton of a complex field, coupled to a dark radial soliton of a real field. Adjusting the Skyrmion ansatz to the lattice setting allows us to construct a "baby-Skyrmion" in two dimensions (2D) and extend it into the 3D case (1D counterparts of the Skyrmions are also found). Stability limits for these patterns are obtained analytically and verified numerically. The dynamics of unstable discrete Skyrmions is explored, and their stabilization by external potentials is discussed.

Multistable Solitons in the Cubic-Quintic Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We analyze the existence and stability of localized solutions in the one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with a combination of competing self-focusing cubic and defocusing quintic onsite nonlinearities. We produce a stability diagram for different families of soliton solutions, that suggests the (co)existence of infinitely many branches of stable localized solutions. Bifurcations which occur with the increase of the coupling constant are studied in a numerical form. A variational approximation is developed for accurate prediction of the most fundamental and next-order solitons together with their bifurcations. Salient properties of the model, which distinguish it from the well-known cubic DNLS equation, are the existence of two different types of symmetric solitons and stable asymmetric soliton solutions that are found in narrow regions of the parameter space. The asymmetric solutions appear from and disappear back into the symmetric ones via loops of forward and backward pitchfork bifurcations.

Multipole-mode solitons in Bessel optical lattices

We study basic properties of quiescent and rotating multipole-mode solitons supported by axially symmetric Bessel lattices in a medium with defocusing cubic nonlinearity. The solitons can be found in different rings of the lattice and are stable when the propagation constant exceeds the critical value, provided that the lattice is deep enough. In a high-power limit the multipole-mode solitons feature a multi-ring structure.

Discrete Solitons and Vortices on Anisotropic Lattices

We consider effects of anisotropy on solitons of various types in two-dimensional nonlinear lattices, using the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation as a paradigm model. For fundamental solitons, we develop a variational approximation, which predicts that broad quasi-continuum solitons are unstable, while their strongly anisotropic counterparts are stable. By means of numerical methods, it is found that, in the general case, the fundamental solitons and simplest on-site-centered vortex solitons ("vortex crosses") feature enhanced or reduced stability areas, depending on the strength of the anisotropy. More surprising is the effect of anisotropy on the so-called "super-symmetric" intersite-centered vortices ("vortex squares"), with the topological charge $S$ equal to the square's size $M$: we predict in an analytical form by means of the Lyapunov-Schmidt theory, and confirm by numerical results, that arbitrarily weak anisotropy results in dramatic changes in the stability and dynamics in comparison with the \emph{degenerate}, in this case, isotropic limit.

Dynamics of trapped bright solitons in the presence of localized inhomogeneities

We examine the dynamics of a bright solitary wave in the presence of a repulsive or attractive localized ``impurity'' in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We study the generation and stability of a pair of steady states in the vicinity of the impurity as the impurity strength is varied. These two new steady states, one stable and one unstable, disappear through a saddle-node bifurcation as the strength of the impurity is decreased. The dynamics of the soliton is also examined in all the cases (including cases where the soliton is offset from one of the relevant fixed points). The numerical results are corroborated by theoretical calculations which are in very good agreement with the numerical findings.

Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Lattices: From Oblique Vortices and Octupoles to Discrete Diamonds and Vortex Cubes

We construct a variety of novel localized states with distinct topological structures in the 3D discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. The states can be created in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in strong optical lattices, and crystals built of microresonators. These new structures, most of which have no counterparts in lower dimensions, range from purely real patterns of dipole, quadrupole and octupole types to vortex solutions, such as "diagonal" and "oblique" vortices, with axes oriented along the respective directions $(1,1,1)$ and $(1,1,0)$. Vortex "cubes" (stacks of two quasi-planar vortices with like or opposite polarities) and "diamonds" (discrete skyrmions formed by two vortices with orthogonal axes) are constructed too. We identify stability regions of these 3D solutions and compare them with their 2D counterparts, if any. An explanation for the stability/instability of most solutions is proposed. The evolution of unstable states is studied as well.

Statics, Dynamics and Manipulations of Bright Matter-Wave Solitons in Optical Lattices

Motivated by recent experimental achievement in the work with Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we consider bright matter-wave solitons, in the presence of a parabolic magnetic trap and a spatially periodic optical lattice (OL), in the attractive BEC. We examine pinned states of the soliton and their stability by means of perturbation theory. The analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulations. We then explore possibilities to use a time-modulated OL as a means of stopping and trapping a moving soliton, and of transferring an initially stationary soliton to a prescribed position by a moving OL. We also study the emission of radiation from the soliton moving across the combined magnetic trap and OL. We find that the soliton moves freely (without radiation) across a weak lattice, but suffers strong loss for stronger OLs.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Some Recent Developments

In this brief review we summarize a number of recent developments in the study of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a topic of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the past few years. We examine the generation of vortices by means of phase imprinting, as well as via dynamical instabilities. Their stability is subsequently examined in the presence of purely magnetic trapping, and in the combined presence of magnetic and optical trapping. We then study pairs of vortices and their interactions, illustrating a reduced description in terms of ordinary differential equations for the vortex centers. In the realm of two vortices we also consider the existence of stable dipole clusters for two-component condensates. Last but not least, we discuss mesoscopic patterns formed by vortices, the so-called vortex lattices and analyze some of their intriguing dynamical features. A number of interesting future directions are highlighted.

Stability of Attractive Bose-Einstein Condensates in a Periodic Potential

Using a standing light wave trap, a stable quasi-one-dimensional attractive dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensate can be realized. In a mean-field approximation, this phenomenon is modeled by the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with attractive nonlinearity and an elliptic function potential of which a standing light wave is a special case. New families of stationary solutions are presented. Some of these solutions have neither an analog in the linear Schrödinger equation nor in the integrable nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Their stability is examined using analytic and numerical methods. Trivial-phase solutions are experimentally stable provided they have nodes and their density is localized in the troughs of the potential. Stable time-periodic solutions are also examined.
