Coulomb's law corrections and fermion field localization in a tachyonic de Sitter thick braneworld

In this work, following recent studies which show that it is possible to localize gravity as well as scalar and gauge vector fields in a tachyonic de Sitter thick braneworld, we investigate the localization of fermion fields in this model. In order to achieve this aim we consider the Yukawa interaction term between the fermions and the tachyonic condensate scalar field MF(T)barPsiPsi in the action and analyze four different cases corresponding to distinct tachyonic functions F(T(w)). The only condition that this function must satisfy in order to yield 4D chiral fermions upon dimensional reduction is to be odd in the extra dimension w. These functions lead to a different structure of the respective fermionic mass spectrum. In particular, localization of the massless left-chiral fermion zero mode is possible for three of these cases. We further analyze the phenomenology of the Yukawa interaction among fermion fields and gauge bosons localized on the brane and obtain the crucial and necessary information to compute the corrections to Coulomb's law coming from massive KK vector modes in the non-relativistic limit. These corrections are exponentially suppressed due to the presence of the mass gap in the mass spectrum of the bulk gauge vector field. From our results we conclude that corrections to Coulomb's law in the thin brane limit have the same form (up to a numerical factor) as far as the left-chiral massless fermion field is localized on the brane. Finally we compute the corrections to the Coulomb's law for a more general case, on a thick brane scenario, for which we can do estimates consistent with brane phenomenology, i.e. we found that the predicted corrections to the Coulomb law in our model, which are well bounded by the observed experimental photon mass, is far beyond its upper bound, positively testing the viability of our tachyonic braneworld.

Deforming the theory lambda-phi-4 along the parameters and fields gradient flows

Considering the action for the theory $λϕ^{4}$ for a massive scalar bosonic field as an entropy functional on the space of coupling constants and on the space of fields, we determine the gradient flows for the scalar field, the mass, and the self-interaction parameter. When the flow parameter is identified with the energy scale, we show that there exist phase transitions between unbroken exact symmetry scenarios and spontaneous symmetry breaking scenarios at increasingly high energies. Since a non-linear heat equation drives the scalar field through a {\it reaction-diffusion} process, in general the flows are not reversible, mimicking the renormalization group flows of the $c$-theorem; the deformation of the field at increasingly high energies can be described as non-linear traveling waves, or solitons associated to self-similar solutions

On the gravitational Chern-Simons action as entropy functional for three-manifolds, and the demystification of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

We determine the more general geometrical flow in the space of metrics corresponding to the steepest descent for the three-dimensional gravitational Chern-Simons action, extending the results previously considered in Class. Quantum Grav. 25 (2008) 165019, and reveling another trouble with the four dimensional Hořava-Lifshitz gravity introduced in Phys. Rev. D 79, 084008 (2009), and JHEP 0903, 020 (2009), which attempts to be a candidate for an UV completion of Einstein general relativity.

Dimension of the moduli space and Hamiltonian analysis of BF field theories

By using the Atiyah-Singer theorem through some similarities with the instanton and the anti-instanton moduli spaces, the dimension of the moduli space for two and four-dimensional BF theories valued in different background manifolds and gauge groups scenarios is determined. Additionally, we develop Dirac's canonical analysis for a four-dimensional modified BF theory, which reproduces the topological YM theory. This framework will allow us to understand the local symmetries, the constraints, the extended Hamiltonian and the extended action of the theory.

Fluctons

From the perspective of topological field theory we explore the physics beyond instantons. We propose the fluctons as nonperturbative topological fluctuations of vacuum, from which the self-dual domain of instantons is attained as a particular case. Invoking the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, we determine the dimension of the corresponding flucton moduli space, which gives the number of degrees of freedom of the fluctons. An important consequence of these results is that the topological phases of vacuum in non-Abelian gauge theories are not necessarily associated with self-dual fields, but only with smooth fields. Fluctons in different scenarios are considered, the basic aspects of the quantum mechanical amplitude for fluctons are discussed, and the case of gravity is discussed briefly.

The Kodama state for topological quantum field theory beyond instantons

Constructing a symplectic structure that preserves the ordinary symmetries and the topological invariance for topological Yang-Mills theory, it is shown that the Kodama (Chern-Simons) state traditionally associated with a topological phase of unbroken diffeomorphism invariance for instantons, exists actually for the complete topological sector of the theory. The case of gravity is briefly discussed.

Wilson loops and topological phases in closed string theory

Using covariant phase space formulations for the natural topological invariants associated with the world-surface in closed string theory, we find that certain Wilson loops defined on the world-surface and that preserve topological invariance, correspond to wave functionals for the vacuum state with zero energy. The differences and similarities with the 2-dimensional QED proposed by Schwinger early are discussed.

Fluctuating topological invariants in string theory as an Abelian gauge theory

It is shown that the topological invariants associated with the two-dimensional world-surface in string theory have nontrivial fluctuations around their nonexistent classical dynamics. Additionally it is proved that the underlying geometrical structure in a covariant phase space formulation for such topological string actions mimics entirely that of an Abelian gauge theory

Topological terms and the global symplectic geometry of the phase space in string theory

Using an imbedding supported background tensor approach for the differential geometry of an imbedded surface in an arbitrary background, we show that the topological terms associated with the inner and outer curvature scalars of the string worldsheet, have a dramatic effect on the global symplectic geometry of the phase space of the theory. By identifying the global symplectic potential of each Lagrangian term in the string action as the argument of the corresponding pure divergence term in a variational principle, we show that those topological terms contribute explicitly to the symplectic potential of any action describing strings, without modifying the string dynamics and the phase space itself. The variation (the exterior derivative on the phase space) of the symplectic potential generates the integral kernel of a covariant and gauge invariant symplectic structure for the theory, changing thus the global symplectic geometry of the phase space. Similar results for non-Abelian gauge theories and General Relativity are briefly discussed

The Euler characteristic and the first Chern number in the covariant phase space formulation of string theory

Using a covariant description of the geometry of deformations for extendons, it is shown that the topological corrections for the string action associated with the Euler characteristic and the first Chern number of the normal bundle of the worldsheet, although do not give dynamics to the string, modify the symplectic properties of the covariant phase space of the theory. Future extensions of the present results are outlined.

Identically closed two-form for covariant phase space quantization of Dirac-Nambu-Goto p-branes in a curved spacetime

Using a fully covariant formalism given by Carter for the deformation dynamics of p-branes governed by the Dirac-Nambu-Goto action in a curved background, it is proved that the corresponding Witten's phase space is endowed with a covariant symplectic structure, which can serve as a starting point for a phase space quantization of such objects. Some open questions for further research are outlined.

Global symplectic potentials on the Witten covariant phase space for bosonic extendons

It is proved that the projections of the deformation vector field, normal and tangential to the worldsheet manifold swept out by Dirac-Nambu-Goto bosonic extendons propagating in a curved background, play the role of {\it global} symplectic potentials on the corresponding Witten covariant phase space. It is also proved that the {\it presymplectic} structure obtained from such potentials by direct exterior derivation, has not components tangent to the action of the relevant diffeomorphisms group of the theory.

Adjoint operators and perturbation theory of black holes

We present a new approach for finding conservation laws in the perturbation theory of black holes which applies for the more general cases of non-Hermitian equations governing the perturbations. The approach is based on a general result which establishes that a covariantly conserved current can be obtained from a solution of any system of homogeneous linear differential equations and a solution of the adjoint system. It is shown that the results obtained from the present approach become essentially the same (with some diferences) to those obtained by means of the traditional methods in the simplest black hole geometry corresponding to the Schwarzschild space-time. The future applications of our approach for studying the perturbations of black hole space-time in string theory is discussed.

On the symplectic structures for geometrical theories

We present a new approach for constructing covariant symplectic structures for geometrical theories, based on the concept of adjoint operators. Such geometric structures emerge by direct exterior derivation of underlying symplectic potentials. Differences and similarities with other approaches and future applications are discussed.

Adjoint operators, gauge invariant perturbations, and covariant symplectic structure for black holes in string theory

Expressions for the general and complete perturbations in terms of Debye potentials of static charged black holes in string theory, valid for curvature below the Planck scale, are derived starting from a decoupled set of equations and using Wald's method of adjoint operators. Our results cover both extremal and nonextremal black holes and are valid for arbitrary values of the dilaton coupling parameter. The decoupled set is obtained using the Newman-Penrose formulation of the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and involves naturally field quantities invariant under both ordinary gauge transformations of the electromagnetic potential perturbations and infinitesimal rotations of the perturbed tetrad. Furthermore, using the recent pointed out relationship between adjoint operators and conserved currents, a local continuity law for the field perturbations in terms of the potentials is also obtained. It is shown that such continuity equation implies the existence of conserved quantities and of a covariant symplectic structure on the phase space. Future extensions of the present results are discussed.

Local continuity laws on the phase space of Einstein equations with sources

Local continuity equations involving background fields and variantions of the fields, are obtained for a restricted class of solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Weyl theories using a new approach based on the concept of the adjoint of a differential operator. Such covariant conservation laws are generated by means of decoupled equations and their adjoints in such a way that the corresponding covariantly conserved currents possess some gauge-invariant properties and are expressed in terms of Debye potentials. These continuity laws lead to both a covariant description of bilinear forms on the phase space and the existence of conserved quantities. Differences and similarities with other approaches and extensions of our results are discussed.
