Brane-world black holes and the scale of gravity

A particle in four dimensions should behave like a classical black hole if the horizon radius is larger than the Compton wavelength or, equivalently, if its degeneracy (measured by entropy in units of the Planck scale) is large. For spherically symmetric black holes in 4 + d dimensions, both arguments again lead to a mass threshold MC and degeneracy scale Mdeg of the order of the fundamental scale of gravity MG. In the brane-world, deviations from the Schwarzschild metric induced by bulk effects alter the horizon radius and effective four-dimensional Euclidean action in such a way that MC \simeq Mdeg might be either larger or smaller than MG. This opens up the possibility that black holes exist with a mass smaller than MG and might be produced at the LHC even if M>10 TeV, whereas effects due to bulk graviton exchanges remain undetectable because suppressed by inverse powers of MG. Conversely, even if black holes are not found at the LHC, it is still possible that MC>MG and MG \simeq 1TeV.

Microcanonical description of (micro) black holes

The microcanonical ensemble is the proper ensemble to describe black holes which are not in thermodynamic equilibrium, such as radiating black holes. This choice of ensemble eliminates the problems, e.g. negative specific heat and loss of unitarity, encountered when the canonical ensemble is used. In this review we present an overview of the weaknesses of the standard thermodynamic description of black holes and show how the microcanonical approach can provide a consistent description of black holes and their Hawking radiation at all energy scales. Our approach is based on viewing the horizon area as yielding the ensemble density at fixed system energy. We then compare the decay rates of black holes in the two different pictures. Our description is particularly relevant for the analysis of micro-black holes whose existence is predicted in models with extra- spatial dimensions.

Non-Gaussianity from Compositeness

By assuming the field seeding the curvature perturbations $ ζ$ is a dynamically arising condensate, we are able to derive the relation $ f_{NL} ^2 \simeq 10^8 H / M_c $ between the non-Gaussianity parameter $ f_{NL} $ and the ratio of the inflationary scale $ H $ to the cutoff scale $ M_c $ of the effective theory describing the condensate, thus relating the experimental bound on $ f_{NL} $ to a bound on $ M_c $.

Exploring the bulk of tidal charged micro-black holes

We study the bulk corresponding to tidal charged brane-world black holes. We employ a propagating algorithm which makes use of the three-dimensional multipole expansion and analytically yields the metric elements as functions of the five-dimensional coordinates and of the ADM mass, tidal charge and brane tension. Since the projected brane equations cannot determine how the charge depends on the mass, our main purpose is to select the combinations of these parameters for which black holes of microscopic size possess a regular bulk. Our results could in particular be relevant for a better understanding of TeV-scale black holes.

Inflation and the semiclassical dynamics of a conformal scalar field

We derive the semiclassical evolution of massless conformally coupled scalar matter in the de Sitter space-time from the Born-Oppenheimer reduction of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We find a remarkable difference with respect to the minimally coupled case: the effect of the quantum gravitational corrections do not depend on the momentum of the scalar mode up to second order in the Planck length and, therefore, there are no relevant corrections to the dispersion relation.

Non-adiabatic quantum effects from a Standard Model time-dependent Higgs vev

We consider the time-dependence of the Higgs vacuum expectation value (vev) given by the dynamics of the Standard Model and study the non-adiabatic production of both bosons and fermions, which is intrinsically non-perturbative. In the Hartree approximation, we analyse the general expressions that describe the dissipative dynamics due to the back-reaction of the produced particles. In particular, we solve numerically some relevant cases for the Standard Model phenomenology in the regime of relatively small oscillations of the Higgs vev.

Radion Induced Spontaneous Baryogenesis

We describe a possible scenario for the baryogenesis arising when matter is added on the branes of a Randall-Sundrum model with a radion stabilizing potential. We show that the radion field can naturally induce spontaneous baryogenesis when the cosmological evolution for the matter on the branes is taken into account.

Method of comparison equations for cosmological perturbations

We apply the method of comparison equations to study cosmological perturbations during inflation, obtaining the full power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations to first and to second order in the slow-roll parameters. We compare our results with those derived by means of other methods, in particular the Green's function method and the improved WKB approximation, and find agreement for the slow-roll structure. The method of comparison equations, just as the improved WKB approximation, can however be applied to more general situations where the slow-roll approximation fails.

Probing quantum gravity effects in black holes at LHC

We study modifications of the Hawking emission in the evaporation of miniature black holes possibly produced in accelerators when their mass approaches the fundamental scale of gravity, set to 1 TeV according to some extra dimension models. Back-reaction and quantum gravity corrections are modelled by employing modified relations between the black hole mass and temperature. We release the assumption that black holes explode at 1 TeV or leave a remnant, and let them evaporate to much smaller masses. We have implemented such modified decay processes into an existing micro-black hole event generator, performing a study of the decay products in order to search for phenomenological evidence of quantum gravity effects.

Classical dynamics and stability of collapsing thick shells of matter

We study the collapse towards the gravitational radius of a macroscopic spherical thick shell surrounding an inner massive core. This overall electrically neutral macroshell is composed by many nested delta-like massive microshells which can bear non-zero electric charge, and a possibly non-zero cosmological constant is also included. The dynamics of the shells is described by means of Israel's (Lanczos) junction conditions for singular hypersurfaces and, adopting a Hartree (mean field) approach, an effective Hamiltonian for the motion of each microshell is derived which allows to check the stability of the matter composing the macroshell. We end by briefly commenting on the quantum effects which may arise from the extension of our classical treatment to the semiclassical level.

Gravitational collapse and evolution of holographic black holes

Gravitational collapse is analyzed in the Brane-World by arguing that regularity of five-dimensional geodesics require that stars on the brane have an atmosphere. For the simple case of a spherically symmetric cloud of non-dissipating dust, conditions are found for which the collapsing star evaporates and approaches the Hawking behavior as the (apparent) horizon is being formed. The effective energy of the star vanishes at a finite radius and the star afterwards re-expands and "anti-evaporates". Israel junction conditions across the brane (holographically related to the matter trace anomaly) and the projection of the Weyl tensor on the brane (holographically interpreted as the quantum back-reaction on the brane metric) contribute to the total energy as, respectively, an "anti-evaporation" and an "evaporation" term.

Improved WKB analysis of Slow-Roll Inflation

We extend the WKB method for the computation of cosmological perturbations during inflation beyond leading order and provide the power spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations to second order in the slow-roll parameters. Our method does not require that the slow-roll parameters be constant. Although leading and next-to-leading results in the slow-roll parameters depend on the approximation technique used in the computation, we find that the inflationary theoretical predictions obtained may reach the accuracy required by planned observations. In two technical appendices, we compare our techniques and results with previous findings.

Higher Order Slow-Roll Predictions for Inflation

We study the WKB approximation beyond leading order for cosmological perturbations during inflation. To first order in the slow-roll parameters, we show that an improved WKB approximation leads to analytical results agreeing to within 0.1% with the standard slow-roll results. Moreover, the leading WKB approximation to second order in the slow-roll parameters leads to analytical predictions in qualitative agreement with those obtained by the Green's function method.

Moving mirrors and black hole evaporation in non-commutative space-times

We study the evaporation of black holes in non-commutative space-times. We do this by calculating the correction to the detector's response function for a moving mirror in terms of the noncommutativity parameter $Θ$ and then extracting the number density as modified by this parameter. We find that allowing space and time to be non-commutative increases the decay rate of a black hole.

Second order brane cosmology with radion stabilization

We study cosmology in the five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum brane-world with a stabilizing effective potential for the radion and matter localized on the branes. The analysis is performed by employing a perturbative expansion in the ratio rho/V between the matter energy density on the branes and the brane tensions around the static Randall-Sundrum solution (which has rho=0 and brane tensions +-V). This approach ensures that the matter evolves adiabatically and allows us to find approximate solutions to second order in ρ/V. Some particular cases are then analyzed in details.

Thermodynamics of a collapsing shell in an expanding Universe

We describe the quasi-static collapse of a radiating, spherical shell of matter in de Sitter space-time using a thermodynamical formalism. It is found that the specific heat at constant area and other thermodynamical quantities exhibit singularities related to phase transitions during the collapse.

Particle Production in Tachyon Condensation

We study particle production in the tachyon condensation process as described by different effective actions for the tachyon. By making use of invariant operators, we are able to obtain exact results for the density of produced particles, which is shown to depend strongly on the specific action. In particular, the rate of particle production remains finite only for one of the actions considered, hence confirming results previously appeared in the literature.

Trans-Planckian footprints in inflationary cosmology

We consider a minimum uncertainty vacuum choice at a fixed energy scale Lambda as an effective description of trans-Planckian physics, and discuss its implications for the linear perturbations of a massless scalar field in power-law inflationary models. We find possible effects with a magnitude of order H/Λin the power spectrum, in analogy with previous results for de-Sitter space-time.
