Charting the expansion of the Universe from z$\sim$0 to z$\sim$14 with HII galaxies

We present an updated Hubble diagram of giant extragalactic H II regions and H II galaxies spanning the redshift interval $z\sim 0$ to $z\sim 14$, extending the use of the $L(\mathrm{H}β)-σ$ relation as an independent cosmological probe into the epoch of cosmic dawn. Our sample comprises 243 objects, including local anchor systems with primary distance measurements, previously published low- and intermediate-redshift H II galaxies, recent JWST/NIRSpec observations, and a new subsample of extremely high-redshift H II galaxies observed with JWST and with ALMA+JWST for the highest-redshift cases. We homogenise the measurements across the full sample, applying consistent corrections for instrumental and thermal broadening, extinction, and, where required, the transformation from [O III]-based to Balmer-line velocity dispersions. We model lensing effects of high redshift using a log-normal magnification formalism and infer cosmological parameters via a nested-sampling analysis. The $L-σ$ relation remains consistent over the full redshift range, showing no evidence for significant evolution even at the highest redshifts currently accessible. For the joint anchor+H II galaxies sample, under a flat $Λ$CDM model, we obtain $h=0.725\pm0.040$ and $Ω_m=0.308^{+0.043}_{-0.053}$. Allowing a constant dark-energy equation of state yields $w_0=-0.96^{+0.53}_{-0.21}$, while a CPL parametrisation gives $w_0=-0.92^{+0.57}_{-0.34}$ and $w_a=-0.48^{+0.60}_{-1.50}$, all consistent, within the uncertainties, with concordance cosmology. These results demonstrate that H II galaxies offer a viable, fully independent tracer of the expansion history across almost the entire age of the Universe, opening a new avenue for testing $Λ$CDM and dark-energy evolution well beyond reionisation.

Spatially-resolved properties of the ionized gas in the HII galaxy J084220+115000

We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic study for the metal poor HII galaxy J084220+115000 using MEGARA Integral Field Unit observations at the Gran Telescopio Canarias. We estimated the gas metallicity using the direct method for oxygen, nitrogen and helium and found a mean value of 12+$\log$(O/H)=$8.03\pm$0.06, and integrated electron density and temperature of $\sim161$ cm$^{-3}$ and $\sim15400$ K, respectively. The metallicity distribution shows a large range of $Δ$(O/H) = 0.72 dex between the minimum and maximum (7.69$\pm$0.06 and 8.42$\pm$0.05) values, unusual in a dwarf star-forming galaxy. We derived an integrated $\log$(N/O) ratio of $-1.51\pm0.05$ and found that both N/O and O/H correspond to a primary production of metals. Spatially resolved maps indicate that the gas appears to be photoionized by massive stars according to the diagnostic line ratios. Between the possible mechanisms to explain the starburst activity and the large variation of oxygen abundance in this galaxy, our data support a possible scenario where we are witnessing an ongoing interaction triggering multiple star-forming regions localized in two dominant clumps.

Early Science with the Large Millimeter Telescope: a 1.1 mm AzTEC Survey of Red-$Herschel$ dusty star-forming galaxies

We present LMT/AzTEC 1.1mm observations of $\sim100$ luminous high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxy candidates from the $\sim600\,$sq.deg $Herschel$-ATLAS survey, selected on the basis of their SPIRE red far-infrared colours and with $S_{500μ\rm m}=35-80$ mJy. With an effective $θ_{\rm FWHM}\approx9.5\,$ arcsec angular resolution, our observations reveal that at least 9 per cent of the targets break into multiple systems with SNR $\geq 4$ members. The fraction of multiple systems increases to $\sim23\,$ per cent (or more) if some non-detected targets are considered multiples, as suggested by the data. Combining the new AzTEC and deblended $Herschel$ photometry we derive photometric redshifts, IR luminosities, and star formation rates. While the median redshifts of the multiple and single systems are similar $(z_{\rm med}\approx3.6)$, the redshift distribution of the latter is skewed towards higher redshifts. Of the AzTEC sources $\sim85\,$ per cent lie at $z_{\rm phot}>3$ while $\sim33\,$ per cent are at $z_{\rm phot}>4$. This corresponds to a lower limit on the space density of ultra-red sources at $4 4$ galaxies.

Chemodynamics of Green Pea galaxies -- I. Outflows and turbulence driving the escape of ionising photons and chemical enrichment

We investigate the ionised gas kinematics, physical properties and chemical abundances of SDSS$J$142947, a Green Pea galaxy at redshift z$\sim$0.17 with strong, double-peak Ly$α$ emission and indirect evidence of Lyman continuum (LyC) leakage. Using high-dispersion spectroscopy, we perform a multi-component analysis of emission-line profiles. Our model consistently fits all lines as a narrow component with intrinsic velocity dispersion $σ\sim$40 km s$^{-1}$, and two broader blue-shifted components with $σ\sim$90 km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim$250 km s$^{-1}$. We find electron densities and temperatures, ionisation conditions, and direct O/H and N/O abundances for each component. A highly ionised, metal-poor, young and compact starburst dominates narrow emission, showing evidence of hard radiation fields and elevated N/O. The blue-shifted broader components are consistent with highly turbulent, possibly clumpy ionised gas at the base of a strong photoionised outflow, which accounts for $\gtrsim$50% of the integrated emission-line fluxes. The outflow is dense and metal-enriched compared to the HII regions, with expansion velocities larger than those obtained from UV interstellar absorption lines under standard assumptions. Some of these metals may be able to escape, with outflows loading factors comparable to those found in high-$z$ galaxies of similar SFR/Area. Our findings depict a two-stage starburst picture; hard radiation fields from young star clusters illuminate a turbulent and clumpy ISM that has been eroded by SNe feedback. While UV data suggest an extended Ly$α$ halo with high average HI column density, LyC photons could only escape from SDSS$J$142947 through low HI density channels or filaments in the ISM approaching density-bounded conditions, traced by outflowing gas.

The Environment of HII Galaxies revisited

We present a study of the close (< 200 kpc) environment of 110 relatively local (z< 0.16) HII galaxies, selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS; DR7). We use available spectroscopic and photometric redshifts in order to investigate the presence of a close and possibly interacting companion galaxy. Our aim is to compare the physical properties of isolated and interacting HII galaxies and investigate possible systematic effects in their use as cosmological probes. We find that interacting HII galaxies tend to be more compact, less luminous and have a lower velocity dispersion than isolated ones, in agreement with previous studies on smaller samples. However, as we verified, these environmental differences do not affect the cosmologically important L_{Hβ}-σ correlation of the HII galaxies.
