Coulombian Disorder in Periodic Systems

We study the effect of unscreened charged impurities on periodic systems. We show that the long wavelength component of the disorder becomes long ranged and dominates static correlation functions. On the other hand, because of the statistical tilt symmetry, dynamical properties such as pinning remain unaffected. As a concrete example, we focus on the effect of Coulombian disorder generated by charged impurities, on 3D charge density waves with non local elasticity. We calculate the x-ray intensity and find that it is identical to the one produced by thermal fluctuations in a disorder-free smectic-A. We discuss the consequences of these results for experiments.

Mean Field theory of the spin-Peierls transition

We revisit the problem of the spin-Peierls instability in a one dimensional spin-1/2 chain coupled to phonons. The phonons are treated within the mean field approximation. We use bosonization techniques to describe the gapped spin chain and then use the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz to obtain quantitative results for the thermodynamics of the spin-Peierls system in a whole range of temperature. This allows us to predict the behavior of the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility in the entire dimerized phase. We study the effect of small magnetic fields on the transition. Moreover, we obtain the parameters of the Landau-Ginzburg theory describing this continuous phase transition near the critical point.

Zero field Wigner crystal

A candidate for the insulating phase of the 2D electron gas, seen in high mobility 2D MOSFETS and heterojunctions, is a Wigner crystal pinned by the incipient disorder. With this in view, we study the effect of collective pinning on the physical properties of the crystal formed in zero external magnetic field. We use an elastic theory to describe to long wavelength modes of the crystal. The disorder is treated using the standard Gaussian variational method. We calculate various physical properties of the system with particular emphasis on their density dependence. We revisit the problem of compressibility in this system and present results for the compressibility obtained via effective capacitance measurements in experiments using bilayers. We present results for the dynamical conductivity, surface acoustic wave anomalies and the power radiated by the crystal through phonon emission at finite temperatures.

Thermal transport in one-dimensional spin gap systems

We study thermal transport in one dimensional spin systems both in the presence and absence of impurities. In the absence of disorder, all these spin systems display a temperature dependent Drude peak in the thermal conductivity. In gapless systems, the low temperature Drude weight is proportional to temperature and to the central charge which characterizes the conformal field theory that describes the system at low energies. On the other hand, the low temperature Drude weight of spin gap systems shows an activated behavior modulated by a power law. For temperatures higher than the spin gap, one recovers the linear T behavior akin to gapless systems. For temperatures larger than the exchange coupling, the Drude weight decays as 1/T^2. We argue that this behavior is a generic feature of quasi one dimensional spin gap systems with a relativistic-like low energy dispersion. We also consider the effect of a magnetic field on the Drude weight with emphasis on the commensurate-incommensurate transition induced by it. We then study the effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the thermal conductivity of the dimerized XY chain and the spin-1/2 two leg ladder. Impurities destroy the Drude peak and the thermal conductivity exhibits a purely activated behavior at low temperature, with an activation gap renormalized by disorder. The relevance of these results for experiments is briefly discussed.

Disordered Quantum smectics

We study the impurity pinning of the Quantum Hall (QH) smectic state arising in two dimensional electron systems in high Landau levels. We use replicas and a Gaussian Variational method to deal with the disorder. The pinned quantum smectic exhibits very anisotropic behaviour, with density correlations along the direction of the stripes manifesting a Bragg-Glass type behaviour i.e., quasi long range order whereas those in the transverse direction are infra red divergent. We calculate the dynamical conductivity along the stripe direction and find a wavelength dependent pinning peak.

Pinned Wigner Crystals

We study the effects of weak disorder on a Wigner crystal in a magnetic field. We show that an elastic description of the pinned Wigner crystal provides an excellent framework to obtain most of the physically relevant observables. Using such a description, we compute the static and dynamical properties. We find that, akin to the Bragg glass phase, a good degree of translational order survives (up to a large lengthscale in $d=2$, infinite in $d=3$). Using a gaussian variational method, we obtain the full frequency dependence of the conductivity tensor. The zero temperature Hall resistivity is independent of frequency and remains unaffected by disorder at its classical value. We show that the characteristic features of the conductivity in the pinned Wigner crystal are dramatically different from those arising from the naive extrapolations of Fukuyama-Lee type theories for charge density waves. We determine the relevant scales and find that the physical properties depend crucially on whether the disorder correlation length is larger than the cyclotron length or not. We analyse, in particular, the magnetic field and density dependence of the optical conductivity. Within our approach the pinning frequency can increase with increasing magnetic field and varies as $n^{-3/2}$ with the density $n$. We compare our predictions with recent experiments on transport in two dimensional electron gases under strong magnetic fields. Our theory allows for a consistent interpretation of these experiments in terms of a pinned WC.

Effects of magnetic field induced chiral-spin interactions on quasi-one-dimensional spin systems

It is known that in certain non-bipartite quasi-one dimensional spin systems in a magnetic field, in addition to the usual Pauli coupling of the spins to the field, new parity breaking three spin interactions, i.e. chiral spin interactions, are induced at higher order due to virtual processes involving the intrinsic electronic nature of the underlying spins. The strenght of these interactions depend strongly on the orientation of the field, a feature which can be exploited to detect chiral effects experimentally. In many spin systems, these chiral interactions are generated and should be taken into account before any comparison with experiments can be made. We study the effect of the chiral interactions on certain quasi-one-dimensional gapped spin half systems and show that they can potentially alter the physics expected from the Pauli coupling alone. In particular, we demonstrate that these terms alter the universality class of the C-IC transition in spin-tubes. More interestingly, in weakly coupled XX zig-zag ladders, we find that the field induced chiral term can close the singlet gap and drive a second order transition in the non-magnetic singlet sector, which manifests itself as a two component Luttinger liquid-like behaviour in the spin correlation functions. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results to experiments.

Effective action approach to strongly correlated fermion systems

We construct a new functional for the single particle Green's function, which is a variant of the standard Baym Kadanoff functional. The stability of the stationary solutions to the new functional is directly related to aspects of the irreducible particle hole interaction through the Bethe Salpeter equation. A startling aspect of this functional is that it allows a simple and rigorous derivation of both the standard and extended dynamical mean field (DMFT) equations as stationary conditions. Though the DMFT equations were formerly obtained only in the limit of infinite lattice coordination, the new functional described in the work, presents a way of directly extending DMFT to finite dimensional systems, both on a lattice and in a continuum. Instabilities of the stationary solution at the bifurcation point of the functional, signal the appearance of a zero mode at the Mott transition which then couples t o physical quantities resulting in divergences at the transition.

Dynamical Mean Field Theory and Electronic Structure Calculations

We formulate the dynamical mean field theory directly in the continuum. For a given definition of the local Green's function, we show the existence of a unique functional, whose stationary point gives the physical local Green's function of the solid. We present the diagrammatic rules to calculate it perturbatively in the interaction. Inspired by the success of dynamical mean field calculations for model Hamiltonian systems, we present approximations to the exact saddle point equations which may be used in the strong coupling regime, by using mappings onto generalized quantum impurity models.

The Finite Temperature Mott Transition in the Hubbard Model in Infinite Dimensions

We study the second order finite temperature Mott transition point in the fully frustrated Hubbard model at half filling, within Dynamical Mean Field Theory. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations we show the existence of a finite temperature second order critical point by explicitly demonstrating the existence of a divergent susceptibility as well as by finding coexistence in the low temperature phase. We determine the location of the finite temperature Mott critical point in the (U,T) plane. Our study verifies and quantifies a scenario for the Mott transition proposed in earlier studies (Reviews of Modern Physics 68, 13, 1996) of this problem.

Effect of coulomb long range interactions on the Mott transition

We reconsider the Mott transition problem in the presence of long range Coulomb interactions. Using an extended DMFT, that sums an important class of diagrams absent in ordinary DMFT, we show that in the presence of Coulomb the Mott transition in two and three dimensions is discontinuous as envisioned by Mott.

Dynamical Mean Field Theory of the Antiferromagnetic Metal to Antiferromagnetic Insulator Transition

We study the antiferromagnetic metal to antiferromagnetic insulator using dynamical mean field theory and exact diagonalization methods. We find two qualitatively different behaviors depending on the degree of magnetic correlations. For strong correlations combined with magnetic frustration, the transition can be described in terms of a renormalized slater theory, with a continuous gap closure driven by the magnetism but strongly renormalized by correlations. For weak magnetic correlations, the transition is weakly first order.

Disordered periodic systems at the upper critical dimension

The effects of weak point-like disorder on periodic systems at their upper critical dimension D_c for disorder are studied. The systems studied range from simple elastic systems with D_c=4 to systems with long range interactions with D_c=2 and systems with D_c=3 such as the vortex lattice with dispersive elastic constants. These problems are studied using the Gaussian Variational method and the Functional Renormalisation Group. In all the cases studied we find a typical ultra-slow loglog(x) growth of the asymptotic displacement correlation function, resulting in nearly perfect translational order. Consequences for the Bragg glass phase of vortex lattices are discussed.

Dynamical properties of the pinned Wigner crystal

We study various dynamical properties of the weakly pinned Wigner crystal in a high magnetic field. Using a Gaussian variational method we can compute the full frequency and field dependence of the real and imaginary parts of the diagonal and Hall conductivities. The zero temperature Hall resistivity is independent of frequency and remains unaffected by disorder at its classical value. We show that, depending on the inherent length scales of the system, the pinning peak and the threshold electric field exhibit strikingly different magnetic field dependences.

Critical Properties of gapped spin-1/2 chains and ladders in a magnetic field

An interesting feature of spin-1/2 chains with a gap is that they undergo a commensurate-incommensurate transition in the presence of an external magnetic field $H$. The system is in a gapless incommensurate regime for all values of the magnetic field between the lower critical field $H_{c1}$ and an upper critical field $H_{c2}$, where it is gapless and has power law correlations. We calculate the critical exponents for such a generic gapped system in the incommensurate regime at the critical field $H_{c1}$ and in its vicinity. Our analysis also applies to the spin-1/2 ladder. We compute the full dynamical susceptibilities at finite temperature. We use the same to discuss the thermal broadening of various modes and obtain the low temperature behaviour of the nuclear spin relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$. We discuss the results obtained here for the special cases of the dimerised chain, frustrated chain and the spin-1/2 ladder.

DMRG Studies of the Spin-Half Heisenberg System with Dimerization and Frustration

Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we study the ground state phase diagram and other low-energy properties of an isotropic antiferromagnetic spin-half chain with both dimerization and frustration, i.e., an alternation $δ$ of the nearest neighbor exchanges and a next-nearest-neighbor exchange $J_2~$. For $δ= 0$, the system is gapless for $J_2 < J_{2c} ~$ and has a gap for $J_2 > J_{2c} ~$ where $J_{2c}~$ is about $0.241$. For $J_2 = J_{2c}$, the gap above the ground state grows as $δ$ to the power $0.667 \pm 0.001$. In the $J_2 - δ$ plane, there is a disorder line $2 J_2 + δ= 1$. To the left of this line, the peak in the static structure factor $S(q)$ is at $q_{max} = π$ (Neel phase), while to the right of the line, $q_{max}$ decreases from $π$ to $π/ 2$ as $J_2$ is increased to large values (spiral phase). For $δ= 1$, the system is equivalent to two coupled chains as on a ladder and it is gapped for all values of the interchain coupling.

A comparative study of the phase diagrams of spin-$1 \over 2$ and spin-$1$ antiferromagnetic chains with dimerization and frustration

We use the density matrix renormalization group method to study the ground state `phase' diagram and some low-energy properties of isotropic antiferromagnetic spin-$1 \over 2$ and spin-$1$ chains with a next-nearest neighbor exchange $J_2 ~$ and an alternation $δ$ of the nearest neighbor exchanges. In the spin-$1 \over 2$ chain, the system is gapless for $δ=0$ and $J_2 < J_{2c} =0.241$, and is gapped everywhere else in the $J_2 - δ$ plane. At $J_{2c}$, for small $δ$, the gap increases as $δ^α$, where $α= 0.667 \pm 0.001$. $2J_2 + δ= 1$ is a disorder line. To the left of this line, the structure factor $S(q)$ peaks at $q_{max} = π$ (Neel `phase'), while to the right, $q_{max}$ decreases from $π$ to $π/2$ (spiral `phase') as $J_2$ increases. There is also a `$\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ phase' for large values of both $J_2$ and $δ$. In the spin-$1$ case, we find a line running from a gapless point at $(J_2 , δ) = (0,0.25 \pm 0.01)$ upto a `gapless' point at $(0.73 \pm 0.005,0)$ such that the open chain ground state is four-fold degenerate below the line and is unique above it. There is a disorder line in this case also and it has the same equation as in the spin-$1 \over 2$ case, but the line ends at about $δ=0.136$. Similar to the spin-$1 \over 2$ case, to the left of this line, the peak in the structure factor is at $π$ (Neel `phase'), while to the right of the line, it is at less than $π$ (spiral `phase'). For $δ=1$, the system corresponds to a spin ladder and the system is gapped for all values of the interchain coupling for both spin-$1 \over 2$ and spin-$1$ ladders.

Phase Diagram of the Spin-One Heisenberg System with Dimerization and Frustration

We use the density matrix renormalization group method to study the ground state properties of an antiferromagnetic spin-$1$ chain with a next-nearest neighbor exchange $J_2 ~$ and an alternation $δ$ of the nearest neighbor exchanges. We find a line running from a gapless point at $(J_2 , δ) = (0, 0.25 \pm 0.01)$ upto an almost gapless point at $(0.725 \pm 0.01, 0$ such that the open chain ground state is $4$-fold degenerate below the line and is unique above it. A disorder line $2 J_2 + δ= 1$ runs from $δ=0$ to about $δ=0.136$. To the left of this line, the peak in the structure factor $S(q)$ is at $π$, while to the right of the line, it is at less than $π$.
