Quasiparticle scattering time in superconducting films: from dirty to clean limit

We study the quasiparticle energy relaxation processes in superconducting Nb films of different thicknesses corresponding to different electron mean free paths in a state far from equilibrium, that is the highly dissipative flux-flow state driven up to the instability point. From the measured current-voltage curves we derive the vortex critical velocity $v^{*}$ for several temperatures. From the $v^{*}(T)$ values, the quasiparticle energy relaxation time $τ_ε$ is evaluated within the Larkin-Ovchinnikov model and numerical calculations of the quasiparticle energy relaxation rates are carried out to support the experimental findings. Besides the expected constant behavior of $τ_ε(T)$ for the dirty samples, we observe a strong temperature dependence of the quasiparticle energy relaxation time in the clean samples. This feature is associated with the increasing contribution from the electron-phonon scattering process as the dirty limit is approached from the clean regime.

One dimensional Bosons: From Condensed Matter Systems to Ultracold Gases

We review the physics of one-dimensional interacting bosonic systems. Beginning with results from exactly solvable models and computational approaches, we introduce the concept of bosonic Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids relevant for one-dimension, and compare it with Bose-Einstein condensates existing in dimensions higher than one. We discuss the effects of various perturbations on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state as well as extensions to multicomponent and out of equilibrium situations. Finally, we review the experimental systems that can be described in terms of models of interacting bosons in one dimension.

Parasitic pumping currents in an interacting quantum dot

We analyze the charge and spin pumping in an interacting dot within the almost adiabatic limit. By using a non-equilibrium Green's function technique within the time-dependent slave boson approximation, we analyze the pumped current in terms of the dynamical constraints in the infinite-U regime. The results show the presence of parasitic pumping currents due to the additional phases of the constraints. The behavior of the pumped current through the quantum dot is illustrated in the spin-insensitive and in the spin-sensitive case relevant for spintronics applications.

Memory effects in adiabatic quantum pumping with parasitic nonlinear dynamics

The charge current adiabatically pumped through a mesoscopic region coupled to a classical variable obeying a nonlinear dynamics is studied within the scattering matrix approach. Due to the nonlinearity in the dynamics of the variable, a hysteretic behavior of the pumping current can be observed for specific characteristics of the pumping cycle. The steps needed to build a quantum pump working as a memory device are discussed together with a possible experimental implementation.

Adiabatic quantum pumping, magnification effects and quantum size effects of spin-torque in magnetic tunnel junctions

We study the adiabatic quantum pumping and quantum size effects of spin-torque in a magnetic tunnel junction within a scattering matrix approach. Quantum size effects are predicted in the presence of a dc bias as a function of the thickness of the normal metal layer inserted between two magnetic layers and of the fixed magnetic layer. In the presence of ac voltages, the results for the spin-torque show a peculiar magnification effect and advantages of spin-torque pumping in actual devices are also discussed.

Interplay between charge-lattice interaction and strong electron correlations in cuprates: phonon anomaly and spectral kinks

We investigate the interplay between strong electron correlations and charge-lattice interaction in cuprates. The coupling between half breathing bond stretching phonons and doped holes in the t-t'-J model is studied by limited phonon basis exact diagonalization method. Nonadiabatic electron-phonon interaction leads to the splitting of the phonon spectral function at half-way to the zone boundary at $\vec{q}_s=\{(\pm π/ 2, 0), (0, \pm π/ 2) \}$ and to low energy kink feature in the electron dispersion, in agreement with experimental observations. Another kink due to strong electron correlation effects is observed at higher energy, depending on the strength of the charge-lattice coupling.

Diagrammatic theory for Periodic Anderson Model: Stationary property of the thermodynamic potential

Diagrammatic theory for Periodic Anderson Model has been developed, supposing the Coulomb repulsion of $f-$ localized electrons as a main parameter of the theory. $f-$ electrons are strongly correlated and $c-$ conduction electrons are uncorrelated. Correlation function for $f-$ and mass operator for $c-$ electrons are determined. The Dyson equation for $c-$ and Dyson-type equation for $f-$ electrons are formulated for their propagators. The skeleton diagrams are defined for correlation function and thermodynamic functional. The stationary property of renormalized thermodynamic potential about the variation of the mass operator is established. The result is appropriate as for normal and as for superconducting state of the system.

Quantum pumping in deformable quantum dots

The charge current pumped adiabatically through a deformable quantum dot is studied within the Green's function approach. Differently from the non-deformable case, the current shows an undefined parity with respect to the pumping phase ϕ. The unconventional current-phase relation, analyzed in the weak pumping regime, is due to a dynamical phase shift ϕ_D caused by the elastic deformations of the central region (classical phonons). The role of the quality factor Q of the oscillator, the effects induced by a mechanical resonance and the implications for current experiments on molecular systems are also discussed.

Spin-torque generation by dc or ac voltages in magnetic layered structures

A general expression of the current induced spin torque in a magnetic layered structure in the presence of external dc or ac voltages is derived in the framework of the scattering matrix approach. A detailed analysis is performed for a magnetic-nonmagnetic-magnetic trilayer connected to external leads in the presence of dc voltage bias in the ballistic regime. Alternatively, the possibility of producing spin torque by means of the adiabatic ac modulation of external gate voltages (quantum pumping) is proposed and discussed.

Isotope effect and bond-stretching phonon anomaly in high-Tc cuprates

We analyse a model where the anomalies of the bond-stretching LO phonon mode are caused by the coupling to electron dynamic response in the form of a damped oscillator and explore the possibility to reconstruct the spectrum of the latter from the phonon measurements. Preliminary estimates point to its location in the mid infrared region and we show how the required additional information can be extracted from the oxygen isotope effect on the phonon spectrum. The model predicts a significant measurable deviation from the "standard value" of the isotope effect even if the phonon frequency is far below the electron spectrum, provided the latter is strongly incoherent. In this regime, which corresponds to the "mid infrared scenario", the phonon linewidth becomes a sensitive and informative probe of the isotope effect.

Adiabatic quantum pumping and rectification effects in interacting quantum dots

We derive a formula describing the adiabatically pumped charge through an interacting quantum dot within the scattering matrix and Green's function approach. We show that when the tunneling rates between the leads and the dot are varied adiabatically in time, both in modulus and phase, the current induced in the dot consists of two terms, the pumping current and a rectification-like term. The last contribution arises from the time-derivative of the tunneling phase and can have even or odd parity with respect to the pumping phase φ. The rectification-like term is also discussed in relation to some recent experiments in quantum-dots.

Quantum stirring as a sensitive probe of 1D superfluidity

We propose quantum stirring with a laser beam as a probe of superfluid behavior for a strongly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas confined to a ring. Within the Luttinger liquid theory framework, we calculate the fraction of stirred particles per period as a function of the stirring velocity, the interaction strength and the coupling between the stirring beam and the bosons. The fraction of stirred particles allows to probe superfluidity of the system. We find that it crosses over at a critical velocity, lower than the sound one, from a characteristic power law at high velocities to a constant at low velocities. Some experimental issues on quantum stirring in ring-trapped condensates are discussed.

Field-Controlled Magnetic Order in the Quantum Spin-Ladder System (Hpip)2CuBr4

Neutron diffraction is used to investigate the field-induced, antiferromagnetically ordered state in the two-leg spin-ladder material (Hpip)2CuBr4. This "classical" phase, a consequence of weak interladder coupling, is nevertheless highly unconventional: its properties are influenced strongly by the spin Luttinger-liquid state of the ladder subunits. We determine directly the order parameter (transverse magnetization), the ordering temperature, the spin structure, and the critical exponents around the transition. We introduce a minimal, microscopic model for the interladder coupling and calculate the quantum fluctuation corrections to the mean-field interaction.

Quantum pumping and rectification effects in Aharonov-Bohm-Casher ring-dot systems

We study the time-dependent transport of charge and spin through a ring-shaped region sequentially coupled to a weakly interacting quantum dot in the presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux and spin-orbit interaction. The time-dependent modulation of the spin-orbit interaction, or of the corresponding Aharonov-Casher flux, together with the modulation of the dot-level induces an electrically pumped spin current even in absence of a charge current. The results beyond the adiabatic regime show that an additional rectification current proportional to \cos(ϕ), being ϕthe relative phase between the time varying parameters, is generated. We discuss the relevance of such term in connection with recent experiments on out-of-equilibrium quantum dots.

Controlling Luttinger liquid physics in spin ladders under a magnetic field

We present a 14N nuclear magnetic resonance study of a single crystal of CuBr4(C5H12N)2 (BPCB) consisting of weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. Treating ladders in the gapless phase as Luttinger liquids, we are able to fully account for (i) the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 at 250 mK and for (ii) the phase transition to a 3D ordered phase occuring below 110 mK due to weak interladder exchange coupling. BPCB is thus an excellent model system where the possibility to control Luttinger liquid parameters in a continuous manner is demonstrated and Luttinger liquid model tested in detail over the whole fermion band.

The Aharonov-Bohm-Casher ring-dot as a flux-tunable resonant tunneling diode

A mesoscopic ring subject to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction and sequentially coupled to an interacting quantum dot, in the presence of Aharonov-Bohm flux, is proposed as a flux tunable tunneling diode. The analysis of the conductance by means of the nonequilibrium Green's function technique, shows an intrinsic bistability at varying the Aharonov-Bohm flux when 2U > πΓ, U being the charging energy on the dot and Γthe effective resonance width. The bistability properties are discussed in connection with spin-switch effects and logical storage device applications.

Diagrammatic theory for Anderson Impurity Model. Stationary property of the thermodynamic potential

A diagrammatic theory around atomic limit is proposed for normal state of Anderson Impurity Model. The new diagram method is based on the ordinary Wick's theorem for conduction electrons and a generalized Wick's theorem for gtrongly correlated impurity electrons. This last theorem coincides with the definition of Kubo cumulants. For the mean value of the evolution operator a linked cluster theorem is proved and a Dyson's type equations for one-particle propagators are established. The main element of these equations is the correlation function which contains the spin, charge and pairing fluctuations of the system. The thermodynamic potential of the system is expressed through one-particle renormalized Green's functions and the corelation function. The stationary property of the thermodynamic potential is established with respect to the changes of correlation function.

Phase diagram and momentum distribution of an interacting Bose gas in a bichromatic lattice

We determine the phase diagram and the momentum distribution for a one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive short range interactions in the presence of a two-color lattice potential, with incommensurate ratio among the respective wave lengths, by using a combined numerical (DMRG) and analytical (bosonization) analysis. The system displays a delocalized (superfluid) phase at small values of the intensity of the secondary lattice V2 and a localized (Bose glass-like) phase at larger intensity V2. We analyze the localization transition as a function of the height V2 beyond the known limits of free and hard-core bosons. We find that weak repulsive interactions unfavor the localized phase i. e. they increase the critical value of V2 at which localization occurs. In the case of integer filling of the primary lattice, the phase diagram at fixed density displays, in addition to a transition from a superfluid to a Bose glass phase, a transition to a Mott-insulating state for not too large V2 and large repulsion. We also analyze the emergence of a Bose-glass phase by looking at the evolution of the Mott-insulator lobes when increasing V2. The Mott lobes shrink and disappear above a critical value of V2. Finally, we characterize the superfluid phase by the momentum distribution, and show that it displays a power-law decay at small momenta typical of Luttinger liquids, with an exponent depending on the combined effect of the interactions and of the secondary lattice. In addition, we observe two side peaks which are due to the diffraction of the Bose gas by the second lattice. This latter feature could be observed in current experiments as characteristics of pseudo-random Bose systems.
