Pumping in an interacting quantum wire

We study charge and spin pumping in an interacting one-dimensional wire. We show that a spatially periodic potential modulated in space and time acts as a quantum pump inducing a dc-current component at zero bias. The current generated by the pump is strongly affected by the interactions. It has a power law dependence on the frequency or temperature with the exponent determined by the interaction in the wire, while the coupling to the pump affects the amplitudes only. We also show that pure spin-pumping can be achieved, without the presence of a magnetic field.

Charge Density Waves and Bond Order Waves in a quarter filled extended Hubbard ladder

We investigate the phase diagram of a quarter filled Hubbard ladder with nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion using bosonization and renormalization group approach. Focusing on the strong-repulsion regime, we discuss the effect of an interchain exchange interaction J and interchain repulsion V on the possible ground states of the system and charge order configurations. Since the spin excitations always possess a gap, we find competing bond-order wave and charge density wave phases as possible ground states of the ladder model. We discuss the elementary excitations in these various phases and point an analogy between the excitations on some of these phases and those of a Kondo-Heisenberg insulator. We also study the order of the quantum phase transitions between the different ground states of the system. We obtain second order transitions in the Ising or SU(2)_2 universality class or first order transitions. We map the complete phase diagram in the J-V plane by integrating perturbative renormalization-group equations. Finally, we discuss the effect of doping away from half-filling and the effect of an applied magnetic field.

Thermal transport in one-dimensional spin gap systems

We study thermal transport in one dimensional spin systems both in the presence and absence of impurities. In the absence of disorder, all these spin systems display a temperature dependent Drude peak in the thermal conductivity. In gapless systems, the low temperature Drude weight is proportional to temperature and to the central charge which characterizes the conformal field theory that describes the system at low energies. On the other hand, the low temperature Drude weight of spin gap systems shows an activated behavior modulated by a power law. For temperatures higher than the spin gap, one recovers the linear T behavior akin to gapless systems. For temperatures larger than the exchange coupling, the Drude weight decays as 1/T^2. We argue that this behavior is a generic feature of quasi one dimensional spin gap systems with a relativistic-like low energy dispersion. We also consider the effect of a magnetic field on the Drude weight with emphasis on the commensurate-incommensurate transition induced by it. We then study the effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the thermal conductivity of the dimerized XY chain and the spin-1/2 two leg ladder. Impurities destroy the Drude peak and the thermal conductivity exhibits a purely activated behavior at low temperature, with an activation gap renormalized by disorder. The relevance of these results for experiments is briefly discussed.

Effects of anisotropic spin-exchange interactions in spin ladders

We investigate the effects of the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya (DM) and Kaplan-Shekhtman-Entin-Wohlman-Aharony (KSEA) interactions on various thermodynamic and magnetic properties of a spin 1/2 ladder. Using the Majorana fermion representation, we derive the spectrum of low energy excitations for a pure DM interaction and in presence of a superimposed KSEA interaction. We calculate the various correlation functions for both cases and discuss how they are modified with respect to the case of an isotropic ladder. We also discuss the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of the system and show that it is strongly influenced by the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the Dzialoshinskii-Moriya vector. Implications of our calculations for NMR and ESR experiments on ladder systems are discussed.

Raman Scattering from Magnetic Excitations in coupled Spin Ladders

We consider Raman scattering of coupled two leg spin ladders in the Fleury-Loudon regime. We derive the dependence of the intensity with polarization of the incoming light and temperature and discuss the effect of interaction of the elementary excitations on the shape of the spectrum. We show that Raman scattering spectrum is sensitive to the effective dimensionality of the coupled ladder system, making Raman scattering useful to discriminate true ladder systems from quasi two dimensional spin gap systems.

Effects of magnetic field induced chiral-spin interactions on quasi-one-dimensional spin systems

It is known that in certain non-bipartite quasi-one dimensional spin systems in a magnetic field, in addition to the usual Pauli coupling of the spins to the field, new parity breaking three spin interactions, i.e. chiral spin interactions, are induced at higher order due to virtual processes involving the intrinsic electronic nature of the underlying spins. The strenght of these interactions depend strongly on the orientation of the field, a feature which can be exploited to detect chiral effects experimentally. In many spin systems, these chiral interactions are generated and should be taken into account before any comparison with experiments can be made. We study the effect of the chiral interactions on certain quasi-one-dimensional gapped spin half systems and show that they can potentially alter the physics expected from the Pauli coupling alone. In particular, we demonstrate that these terms alter the universality class of the C-IC transition in spin-tubes. More interestingly, in weakly coupled XX zig-zag ladders, we find that the field induced chiral term can close the singlet gap and drive a second order transition in the non-magnetic singlet sector, which manifests itself as a two component Luttinger liquid-like behaviour in the spin correlation functions. Finally, we discuss the relevance of our results to experiments.

Raman Scattering cross section of Spin Ladders

The Raman scattering spectra from magnetic excitations in an antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 two leg ladder is investigated for weak and strong interladder coupling. In the first case, a cusp in the Raman intensityis obtained at a frequency twice the gap. In the second case, a peak at twice the gap replaces the cusp. We discuss the relevance of our calculation to recent experiments on CaV2O5 and Sr14Cu24O41.

Low-energy behavior of the spin-tube and spin-orbital models

The low-energy effective Hamiltonian of three coupled spin chains with periodic boundary conditions (spin tube) is expressed, in the limit of strong interchain coupling, in terms of XXZ chains coupled by biquadratic exchange interaction. A similar class of models was proposed to describe the coupling of spins to orbital degrees of freedom in materials such as NaV2O5. We investigate these models by means of bosonization and renormalization group techniques, and find that the generic phase diagram comprises a gapless region and gapped regions consisting of a spin liquid phase and various antiferromagnetic phases. We discuss the properties of the spin liquid phase, in particular the nature of the ground state and of the elementary excitations above it. We then study the effect of a magnetic field, and conclude that a strong enough magnetic field can suppress the dimerized phase leading to a two component Luttinger liquid. The critical exponents at the transition gapful-gapless are calculated and shown to be non-universal in the spin tube case as well as in the generic spin orbital problem.

Critical behaviour of a spin-tube model in a magnetic field

We show that the low-energy physics of the spin-tube model in presence of a critical magnetic field can be described by a broken SU(3) spin chain. Using the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis Theorem we characterize the possible magnetization plateaus and study the critical behavior in the region of transition between the plateaus m=1/2 and m=3/2 by means of renormalization group calculations performed on the bosonized effective continuum field theory. We show that in certain regions of the parameter space of the effective theory the system remains gapless, and we compute the spin-spin correlation functions in these regions. We also discuss the possibility of a plateau at m=1, and show that although there exists in the continuum theory a term that might cause the appearance of a plateau there, such term is unlikely to be relevant. This conjecture is proved by DMRG techniques. The modifications of the three-leg ladder Hamiltonian that might show plateaus at m =1,5/6,7/6 are discussed, and we give the expected form of correlation functions on the m=1 plateau.
