Higgs Physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, was a success achieved with only a percent of the entire dataset foreseen for the LHC. It opened a landscape of possibilities in the study of Higgs boson properties, Electroweak Symmetry breaking and the Standard Model in general, as well as new avenues in probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Six years after the discovery, with a conspicuously larger dataset collected during LHC Run 2 at a 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy, the theory and experimental particle physics communities have started a meticulous exploration of the potential for precision measurements of its properties. This includes studies of Higgs boson production and decays processes, the search for rare decays and production modes, high energy observables, and searches for an extended electroweak symmetry breaking sector. This report summarises the potential reach and opportunities in Higgs physics during the High Luminosity phase of the LHC, with an expected dataset of pp collisions at 14 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 ab$^{-1}$. These studies are performed in light of the most recent analyses from LHC collaborations and the latest theoretical developments. The potential of an LHC upgrade, colliding protons at a centre-of-mass energy of 27 TeV and producing a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$, is also discussed.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 4. Deciphering the Nature of the Higgs Sector

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

Les Houches 2013: Physics at TeV Colliders: New Physics Working Group Report

We present the activities of the "New Physics" working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 3--21 June, 2013). Our report includes new computational tool developments, studies of the implications of the Higgs boson discovery on new physics, important signatures for searches for natural new physics at the LHC, new studies of flavour aspects of new physics, and assessments of the interplay between direct dark matter searches and the LHC.

Graviton loops and brane observables

We discuss how to consistently perform effective Lagrangian computations in quantum gravity with branes in compact extra dimensions. A reparametrization invariant and infrared finite result is obtained in a non trivial way. It is crucial to properly account for brane fluctuations and to correctly identify physical observables. Our results correct some confusing claims in the literature. We discuss the implications of graviton loops on electroweak precision observables and on the muon g-2 in models with large extra dimensions. We model the leading effects, not controlled by effective field theory, by introducing a hard momentum cut-off.

New Physics at the LHC: A Les Houches Report. Physics at Tev Colliders 2007 -- New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. The signatures are organized according to the experimental objects that appear in the final state, and in particular the number of high pT leptons. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics'' working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 11-29 June, 2007).

Holographic evolution of gauge couplings

We study the gauge coupling evolution of a unified theory in the compact Randall-Sundrum model with gauge bosons propagating in the bulk. One-loop corrections in AdS are interpreted in the 4d dual theory as the sum of two contributions: CFT insertions subleading in a 1/N expansion and loops of the additional particles coupled to the CFT. We have calculated the scalar loop correction to the low energy gauge couplings both in scenarios where the GUT symmetry is broken by boundary conditions and with the Higgs mechanism. In each case our results are what expected from the holographic dual theory.

Anomalies, Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and the consistency of orbifold field theories

We study the consistency of orbifold field theories and clarify to what extent the condition of having an anomaly-free spectrum of zero-modes is sufficient to guarantee it. Preservation of gauge invariance at the quantum level is possible, although at the price, in general, of introducing operators that break the 5d local parity. These operators are, however, perfectly consistent with the orbifold projection. We also clarify the relation between localized Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms and anomalies. These terms can be consistently added, breaking neither local supersymmetry nor the gauge symmetry. In the framework of supergravity the localized FI term arises as the boundary completion of a bulk interaction term: given the bulk Lagrangian the FI is fixed by gauge invariance.

Running and Matching from 5 to 4 Dimensions

We study 5 dimensional grand-unified theories in an orbifold geometry by the method of effective field theory: we match the low and high energy theories by integrating out at 1-loop the massive Kaluza-Klein states. In the supersymmetric case the radius dependence of threshold effects is fixed by the rescaling anomalies of the low energy theory. We focus on a recently proposed SU(5) model on $M^4 \times S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2^\prime)$. Even though the spectrum of the heavy modes is completely known, there still are corrections to gauge unification originating from boundary couplings. In order to control these effects one has to rely on extra assumptions. We argue that, as far as gauge couplings are concerned, the predictive power of these models is similar to conventional GUTs.

Epsilon' from supersymmetry with non universal A terms?

In supersymmetric theories with a motivated flavour structure, we investigate the possibility that an epsilon' parameter as large as the measured value be generated without conflicting with the bounds from electron and neutron electric dipoles and mu --> e gamma.

Heavy-heavy form factors and generalized factorization

We reanalyze B -> D pi and B -> K J/psi data to extract a set of parameters which give the relevant hadronic matrix elements in terms of factorized amplitudes. Various sources of theoretical uncertainties are studied, in particular those depending on the model adopted for the form factors. We find that the fit to the B -> D pi branching ratios substantially depends on the model describing the Isgur-Wise function and on the value of its slope. This dependence can be reduced by substituting the BR(B -> D pi) with suitable ratios of non-leptonic to differential semileptonic BRs. In this way, we obtain a model-independent determination of these parameters. Using these results, the B -> D form factors at q^2=M_pi^2 can be extracted from a fit of the BR(B -> D pi). The comparison between the form factors obtained in this way and the corresponding measurements in semileptonic decays can be used as a test of (generalized) factorization free from the uncertainties due to heavy-heavy form factor modeling. Finally, we present predictions for yet-unmeasured D pi and D K branching ratios and extract f_{D_s} and f_{D_s^*} from B -> DD_s decays. We find f_{D_s} = 270 +- 45 MeV and f_{D_s^*}=260 +- 40 MeV, in good agreement with recent measurements and lattice calculations.

Charming-penguin enhanced B decays

Long-distance contributions of operators of the effective non-leptonic weak Hamiltonian containing charmed currents have been recently studied. Penguin-like contractions of these operators, denoted as charming penguins, have been shown to be relevant for several B decays into two pseudoscalar mesons. In particular, they are expected to give large enhancements to processes which would be otherwise Cabibbo suppressed. Their contributions easily lead to values of BR(B^+ \to K^0 π^+) and BR(B_d \to K^+ π^-) of about 1 \times 10^{-5}, as recently found by the CLEO collaboration. In this paper, we show that such large branching fractions cannot be obtained without charming penguins. This holds true irrespectively of the model used to compute the non-leptonic amplitudes and of the relevant parameters of the CKM mixing matrix. We use the experimental measurements of the B^+ \to K^0 π^+ and B_d \to K^+ π^- decay rates to constrain the charming-penguin amplitudes and to predict BRs for a large set of other two-body decay channels where their contributions are also important. These include several pseudoscalar-vector and vector-vector channels, such as B \to ρK and B \to ρK^*, which have not been measured yet.
