Exceptional quantum subgroups for the rank two Lie algebras B2 and G2

Exceptional modular invariants for the Lie algebras B2 (at levels 2,3,7,12) and G2 (at levels 3,4) can be obtained from conformal embeddings. We determine the associated alge bras of quantum symmetries and discover or recover, as a by-product, the graphs describing exceptional quantum subgroups of type B2 or G2 which encode their module structure over the associated fusion category. Global dimensions are given.

Comments about quantum symmetries of SU(3) graphs

For the SU(3) system of graphs generalizing the ADE Dynkin digrams in the classification of modular invariant partition functions in CFT, we present a general collection of algebraic objects and relations that describe fusion properties and quantum symmetries associated with the corresponding Ocneanu quantum groupoïds. We also summarize the properties of the individual members of this system.

Determination of quantum symmetries for higher ADE systems from the modular T matrix

We show that the Ocneanu algebra of quantum symmetries, for an ADE diagram (or for higher Coxeter-Dynkin systems, like the Di Francesco - Zuber system) is, in most cases, deduced from the structure of the modular T matrix in the A series. We recover in this way the (known) quantum symmetries of su(2) diagrams and illustrate our method by studying those associated with the three genuine exceptional diagrams of type su(3), namely E5, E9 and E21. This also provides the shortest way to the determination of twisted partition functions in boundary conformal field theory with defect lines.

Associated quantum vector bundles and symplectic structure on a quantum plane

We define a quantum generalization of the algebra of functions over an associated vector bundle of a principal bundle. Here the role of a quantum principal bundle is played by a Hopf-Galois extension. Smash products of an algebra times a Hopf algebra H are particular instances of these extensions, and in these cases we are able to define a differential calculus over their associated vector bundles without requiring the use of a (bicovariant) differential structure over H. Moreover, if H is coquasitriangular, it coacts naturally on the associated bundle, and the differential structure is covariant. We apply this construction to the case of the finite quotient of the SL_q(2) function Hopf algebra at a root of unity (q^3=1) as the structure group, and a reduced 2-dimensional quantum plane as both the "base manifold" and fibre, getting an algebra which generalizes the notion of classical phase space for this quantum space. We also build explicitly a differential complex for this phase space algebra, and find that levels 0 and 2 support a (co)representation of the quantum symplectic group. On this phase space we define vector fields, and with the help of the Sp_q structure we introduce a symplectic form relating 1-forms to vector fields. This leads naturally to the introduction of Poisson brackets, a necessary step to do "classical" mechanics on a quantum space, the quantum plane.

Hopf stars, twisted Hopf stars and scalar products on quantum spaces

The properties of Hopf star operations and twisted Hopf stars operations on quantum groups are discussed in relation with the theory of representations (star representations). Invariant Hermitian sesquilinear forms (scalar products) on modules or module-algebras are then defined and analyzed. Particular attention is paid to scalar products that can be associated with the Killing form (when it exists) or with the left (or right) invariant integrals on the quantum group. Our results are systematically illustrated in the case of a family of non semi-simple and finite dimensional quantum groups that are obtained as Hopf quotients of the quantum enveloping algebra U_q(sl(2,C)), q being an N-th root of unity. Many explicit results concerning the case N=3 are given. We also mention several physical motivations for the present work: conformal field theory, spin chains, integrable models, generalized Yang-Mills theory with quantum group action and the search for finite quantum groups symmetries in particle physics.

Differential calculus and connections on a quantum plane at a cubic root of unity

We consider the algebra of N x N matrices as a reduced quantum plane on which a finite-dimensional quantum group H acts. This quantum group is a quotient of U_q(sl(2,C)), q being an N-th root of unity. Most of the time we shall take N=3; in that case \dim(H) = 27. We recall the properties of this action and introduce a differential calculus for this algebra: it is a quotient of the Wess-Zumino complex. The quantum group H also acts on the corresponding differential algebra and we study its decomposition in terms of the representation theory of H. We also investigate the properties of connections, in the sense of non commutative geometry, that are taken as 1-forms belonging to this differential algebra. By tensoring this differential calculus with usual forms over space-time, one can construct generalized connections with covariance properties with respect to the usual Lorentz group and with respect to a finite-dimensional quantum group.

Geometry of the reduced quantum plane

We consider the space M of NxN matrices as a reduced quantum plane and discuss its geometry under the action and coaction of finite dimensional quantum groups (a quotient of U_q(SL(2)), q being an N-th root of unity, and its dual). We also introduce a differential calculus for M: a quotient of the Wess Zumino complex. We shall restrict ourselves to the case N odd and often choose the particular value N=3. The present paper (to appear in the proceedings of the conference "Quantum Groups and Fundamental Physical Applications", Palerme, December 1997) is essentially a short version of math-ph/9807012.

Action of a finite quantum group on the algebra of complex NxN matrices

Using the fact that the algebra M := M_N(C) of NxN complex matrices can be considered as a reduced quantum plane, and that it is a module algebra for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra quotient H of U_q(sl(2)) when q is a root of unity, we reduce this algebra M of matrices (assuming N odd) into indecomposable modules for H. We also show how the same finite dimensional quantum group acts on the space of generalized differential forms defined as the reduced Wess Zumino complex associated with the algebra M.

Finite dimensional quantum group covariant differential calculus on a complex matrix algebra

Using the fact that the algebra M(3,C) of 3 x 3 complex matrices can be taken as a reduced quantum plane, we build a differential calculus Omega(S) on the quantum space S defined by the algebra C^\infty(M) \otimes M(3,C), where M is a space-time manifold. This calculus is covariant under the action and coaction of finite dimensional dual quantum groups. We study the star structures on these quantum groups and the compatible one in M(3,C). This leads to an invariant scalar product on the later space. We analyse the differential algebra Omega(M(3,C)) in terms of quantum group representations, and consider in particular the space of one-forms on S since its elements can be considered as generalized gauge fields.

COMMENTS ABOUT HIGGS FIELDS, NONCOMMUTATIVE GEOMETRY AND THE STANDARD MODEL

We make a short review of the formalism that describes Higgs and Yang Mills fields as two particular cases of an appropriate generalization of the notion of connection. We also comment about the several variants of this formalism, their interest, the relations with noncommutative geometry, the existence (or lack of existence) of phenomenological predictions, the relation with Lie super-algebras etc.

Triangular dissections, aperiodic tilings and Jones algebras

The Brattelli diagram associated with a given bicolored Dynkin-Coxeter graph of type $A_n$ determines planar fractal sets obtained by infinite dissections of a given triangle. All triangles appearing in the dissection process have angles that are multiples of $π/ (n+1).$ There are usually several possible infinite dissections compatible with a given $n$ but a given one makes use of $n/2$ triangle types if $n$ is even. Jones algebra with index $[ 4 \ \cos^2{π\over n+1}]^{-1}$ (values of the discrete range) act naturally on vector spaces associated with those fractal sets. Triangles of a given type are always congruent at each step of the dissection process. In the particular case $n=4$, there are isometric and the whole structure lead, after proper inflation, to aperiodic Penrose tilings. The ``tilings'' associated with other values of the index are discussed and shown to be encoded by equivalence classes of infinite sequences (with appropriate constraints) using $n/2$ digits (if $n$ is even) and generalizing the Fibonacci numbers.

Currents on Grassmann algebras

We define currents on a Grassmann algebra $Gr(N)$ with $N$ generators as distributions on its exterior algebra (using the symmetric wedge product). We interpret the currents in terms of ${\Z}_2$-graded Hochschild cohomology and closed currents in terms of cyclic cocycles (they are particular multilinear forms on $Gr(N)$). An explicit construction of the vector space of closed currents of degree $p$ on $Gr(N)$ is given by using Berezin integration.

Algebraic connections on parallel universes

For any manifold $M$, we introduce a $\ZZ $-graded differential algebra $Ξ$, which, in particular, is a bi-module over the associative algebra $C(M\cup M)$. We then introduce the corresponding covariant differentials and show how this construction can be interpreted in terms of Yang-Mills and Higgs fields. This is a particular example of noncommutative geometry. It differs from the prescription of Connes in the following way: The definition of $Ξ$ does not rely on a given Dirac-Yukawa operator acting on a space of spinors.
