Brazilian Report on Dark Matter 2024

One of the key scientific objectives for the next decade is to uncover the nature of dark matter (DM). We should continue prioritizing targets such as weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), Axions, and other low-mass dark matter candidates to improve our chances of achieving it. A varied and ongoing portfolio of experiments spanning different scales and detection methods is essential to maximize our chances of discovering its composition. This report paper provides an updated overview of the Brazilian community's activities in dark matter and dark sector physics over the past years with a view for the future. It underscores the ongoing need for financial support for Brazilian groups actively engaged in experimental research to sustain the Brazilian involvement in the global search for dark matter particles

Brazilian Community Report on Dark Matter

This white paper summarizes the activities of the Brazilian community concerning dark matter physics and highlights the importance of financial support to Brazilian groups that are deeply involved in experimental endeavours. The flagships of the Brazilian dark matter program are the Cherenkov Telescope Array, DARKSIDE, SBN and LHC experiments, but we emphasize that smaller experiments such as DAMIC and CONNIE constitute important probes to dark sectors as well and should receive special attention. Small experimental projects showing the potential to probe new regions of parameter space of dark matter models are encouraged. On the theoretical and phenomenological side, some groups are devoted to astrophysical aspects such as the dark matter density profile while others explore the signature of dark matter models at colliders, direct and indirect detection experiments. In summary, the Brazilian dark matter community that was born not long ago has grown tremendously in the past years and now plays an important role in the hunt for a dark matter particle.

QCD sum rules for the $Δ$ isobar in neutron matter

We study the properties of the $Δ$ isobar in the symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter using the QCD sum rules approach based on the energy dispersion relation. Allowing for different continuum thresholds for the polarization tensors with different dimensions, we find stable masses for the $Δ$ in both the vacuum and the medium. Compared to the nucleon case, we find that the vector repulsion is smaller for the $Δ$ while the scalar attraction is similar (75 MeV vector repulsion and 150 MeV scalar attraction in the symmetric matter). The smaller vector repulsion can be understood using the Pauli principle and a constituent quark model. Also the isospin dependence of the quasiparticle energy, which mainly comes from the vector self energy, is quite weak. We also allow for an explicit $π-N$ continuum contribution to the polarization function, but find its effect to be minimal. Phenomenological consequences of our results are discussed.

QCD Sum Rules for the production of the X(3872) as a mixed molecule-charmonium state in B meson decay

We use QCD sum rules to calculate the branching ratio for the production of the meson X(3872) in the decay $B\to X(3872)K$, assumed to be a mixture between charmonium and exotic molecular $[c\bar{q}][q\bar{c}]$ states with $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. We find that in a small range for the values of the mixing angle, $5^\circ\leqθ\leq13^\circ$, we get the branching ratio ${\mathcal{B}}(B\to XK)=(1.00\pm0.68)\times10^{-5}$, which is in agreement with the experimental upper limit. This result is compatible with the analysis of the mass and decay width of the mode $J/ψ(nπ)$ and the radiative decay mode $J/ψγ$ performed in the same approach.

QCD Sum Rules for the X(3872) as a mixed molecule-charmoniun state

We use QCD sum rules to test the nature of the meson X(3872), assumed to be a mixture between charmonium and exotic molecular [c\bar{q}][q\bar{c}] states with J^{PC}=1^{++}. We find that there is only a small range for the values of the mixing angle, θ, that can provide simultaneously good agreement with the experimental value of the mass and the decay width, and this range is θbetween 5 and 13 degrees. In this range we get m_X=(3.77 \pm 0.18) GeV and Γ(X to J/ψπ^+ π^-)=(9.3 \pm 6.9) MeV, which are compatible, within the errors, with the experimental values. We, therefore, conclude that the X(3872) is approximately 97% a charmonium state with 3% admixture of \sim 88% D^0D^{*0} molecule and \sim 12% D^+D^{*-} molecule.

Do the QCD sum rules support four-quark states?

We test the validity of the QCD sum rules applied to the light scalar mesons, the charmed mesons $D_{s0}(2317)$ and $D_{s1} (2460)$, and the X(3872) axial meson, considered as tetraquark states. We find that, with the studied currents, it is possible to find an acceptable Borel window only for the X(3872) meson. In such a Borel window we have simultaneouly a good OPE convergence and a pole contribution which is bigger than the continuum contribution. We interpret these results as a strong argument against the assignment of a tetraquark structure for the light scalars and the $D_{s0}(2317)$ and $D_{s1} (2460)$ mesons.

Can the X(3872) be a 1^{++} four-quark state?

We use QCD spectral sum rules to test the nature of the meson X(3872), assumed to be an exotic four-quark (c\bar{c}q\bar{q}) state with J^{PC}=1^{++}. For definiteness, we work with the current proposed recently by Maiani et al [1], at leading order in α_s, consider the contributions of higher dimension condensates and keep terms which are linear in the light quark mass m_q. We find M_X=(3925+- 127) MeV which is compatible, within the errors, with he experimental candidate X(3872), while the SU(3) breaking-terms lead to an unusual mass-splitting M_{X^{s}}-M_X=- (61+-30) MeV. The mass-difference between the neutral states due to isospin violation of about (2.6-3.9) MeV is much smaller than the value (8+-3) MeV proposed in [1]. For the b-quark, we predict M_{X_b}= (10144+-106) MeV for the X_b(b\bar{b}q \bar{q}), which is much below the {\bar B}B* threshold in contrast to the {\bar B}B* molecule prediction [2], and for the X_b^s(b\bar{b}s \bar{s}), a mass-splitting M_{X^s_{b}}-M_{X_b}=-(121+-182) MeV. Our analysis also indicates that the mass-splitting between the ground state and the radial excitation of about (225~250) MeV is much smaller than in the case of ordinary mesons and is (within the errors) flavour-independent. We also extract the decay constants, analogous to f_π, of such mesons, which are useful for further studies of their leptonic and hadronic decay widths. The uncertainties of our estimates are mainly due to the ones from the c and b quark masses.

Diquark-Antidiquark with open charm in QCD sum rules

Using the QCD sum rule approach we investigate the possible four-quark structure of the recently observed charmed scalar mesons $D_0^{0}(2308)$ (BELLE) and $D_0^{0,+}(2405)$ (FOCUS) and also of the very narrow $D_{sJ}^{+}(2317)$, firstly observed by BABAR. We use diquak-antidiquark currents and work to the order of $m_s$ in full QCD, without relying on $1/m_c$ expansion. Our results indicate that a four-quark structure is acceptable for the resonances observed by BELLE and BABAR: $D_0^{0}(2308)$ and $D_{sJ}^{+}(2317)$ respectively, but not for the resonances observed by FOCUS: $D_0^{0,+}(2405)$.

Disentangling two- and four-quark state pictures of the charmed scalar mesons

We suggest that the recently observed charmed scalar mesons $D_0^{0}(2308)$ (BELLE) and $D_0^{0,+}(2405)$ (FOCUS) are considered as different resonances. Using the QCD sum rule approach we investigate the possible four-quark structure of these mesons and also of the very narrow $D_{sJ}^{+}(2317)$, firstly observed by BABAR.

A Comparative Study of Pentaquark Interpolating Currents

In a diquark-diquark-antiquark picture of pentaquarks, we use two interpolating currents to calculate the mass of the recently measured $Ξ^{--}$ state in the framework of QCD sum rules. We show that, even though yielding similar values for $m_{Ξ^{--}}$ (and close to the experimental value), these currents differ from each other in what concerns the strength of the pole, convergence of the OPE and sensitivity to the continuum threshold parameter.

$J/ψ$ couplings to open charm mesons from QCD sum rules

We employ QCD sum rules to calculate the $J/ψ$ form factors and coupling constants with charmed mesons, by studying three-point correlation functions. In particular we consider the $J/ψD^*D$ and $J/ψDD$ vertices. We determine the momentum dependence of the form factors for kinematical conditions where J/ψ, D or D^* are off-shell. Extrapolating to the pole of each one of the so obtained form factors, we determine the coupling constants. For both couplings our results (within the errors) are compatible with estimates based on constituent quark model.

Are $Θ^+$ and the Roper resonance diquark-diquark-antiquark states?

We consider a $[ud]^2\bar{s}$ current in the QCD sum rule framework to study the mass of the recently observed pentaquark state $Θ^+(1540)$, obtaining good agreement with the experimental value. We also study the mass of the pentaquark $[ud]^2\bar{d}$. Our results are compatible with the interpretation of the $[ud]^2\bar{d}$ state as being the Roper resonance N(1440), as suggested by Jaffe and Wilczek.

The $J/ψDD^*$ vertex

We employ QCD sum rules to calculate the $J/ψDD^*$ form factors and coupling constant by studying the three-point $J/ψD^*D$ correlation function. We find that the momentum dependence of the form factor depends on the off-shell meson. We get a value for the coupling which is in agreement with estimates based on constituent quark model.

The $J/ψD D$ Vertex in QCD Sum Rules

The $J/ψD D$ form factor is evaluated in a QCD sum rule calculation for both $D$ and $J/ψ$ off-shell mesons. We study the double Borel sum rule for the three point function of two pseudoscalar and one vector meson current. We find that the momentum dependence of the form factors is different if the $D$ or the $J/ψ$ meson is off-shell, but they lead to the same coupling constant in the $J/ψD D$ vertex.
