Long- to short-range magnetic order in fluorine-doped CeFeAsO

The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} as a function of the fluorine content x was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at x=0.04, seemingly accompanied/induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping (x>0.04) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

Tuning of competing magnetic and superconducting phase volumes in LaFeAsO$_0.945F_0.055 by hydrostatic pressure

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.945F_0.055 was studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p~2.4GPa by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and magnetization measurements. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic areas which coexist in the same sample are inclined towards spatial separation and compete for phase volume as a function of pressure.

Evidence for impurity-induced frustration in La2CuO4

Zero-field muon spin rotation and magnetization measurements were performed in La2Cu{1-x}MxO4, for 0<x< 0.12, where Cu2+ is replaced either by M=Zn2+ or by M=Mg2+ spinless impurity. It is shown that while the doping dependence of the sublattice magnetization (M(x)) is nearly the same for both compounds, the Néel temperature (T_N(x)) decreases unambiguously more rapidly in the Zn-doped compound. This difference, not taken into account within a simple dilution model, is associated with the frustration induced by the Zn2+ impurity onto the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic lattice. In fact, from T_N(x) and M(x) the spin stiffness is derived and found to be reduced by Zn doping more significantly than expected within a dilution model. The effect of the structural modifications induced by doping on the exchange coupling is also discussed.

Vortex dynamics and irreversibility line in optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ from ac susceptibility and magnetization measurements

Ac susceptibility and static magnetization measurements were performed in the optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ superconductor. The field - temperature phase diagram of the superconducting state was drawn and, in particular, the features of the flux line lattice derived. The dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy on the magnetic field intensity was derived in the thermally-activated flux creep framework, enlightening a typical 1/H dependence in the high-field regime. The intra-grain critical current density was extrapolated in the zero temperature and zero magnetic field limit, showing a remarkably high value $J_{c0}(0) \sim 2 \cdot 10^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$, which demonstrates that this material is rather interesting for the potential future technological applications.

Magnetic order, metamagnetic transitions, and low-temperature spin freezing in Ca3Co2O6: an NMR study

We report on a 59Co NMR investigation of the trigonal cobaltate Ca3Co2O6 carried out on a single crystal, providing precise determinations of the electric field gradient and chemical shift tensors, and of the internal magnetic fields at the non-magnetic Co I sites, unavailable from former studies on powders. The magnetic field-induced ferri- and ferromagnetic phases at intermediate temperature (e.g. 10 K) are identified by distinct internal fields, well accounted for by purely dipolar interactions. The vanishing transferred hyperfine field at the Co I site indicates that the Co3+(I) orbitals do not participate in the intra-chain superexchange, in disagreement with a previous theoretical model. The strong Ising character of the system is confirmed experimentally by the field dependence of the resonance lines, indicating that local moments are saturated even at the phase boundaries. In the vicinity of the critical fields, nuclear spin-spin relaxations detect the spin reversal dynamics of large magnetic assemblies, either Ising chain fragments or finite size domains, which drive the metamagnetic transitions. Such collective excitations exhibit a glassy behavior, slowing down to subacoustic frequencies and freezing at low temperature. The relevance of such slow fluctuation modes for the low-temperature multi-step behavior reported in the magnetization is discussed.

Interface effects on an ultrathin Co film in multilayers based on the organic semiconductor Alq3

The effect of the AlOx barrier thickness on magnetic and morphological properties of Ta/Co/(AlOx)/Alq3/Si hybrid structures was systematically studied by means of atomic force microscopy, SQUID magnetometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). All used techniques pointed out that the barrier thickness of 2 nm is required to obtain a magnetically good cobalt layer on top of Alq3. 59Co NMR measurements revealed that the AlOx barrier gives rise to the formation of an interface layer with "defective" cobalt favouring growth of "bulk" cobalt with good magnetic properties.

Competing orders suppressed by disorder around a hidden quantum critical point in cuprate high Tc superconductors

We report extensive muon spin rotation measurements on the lightly doped Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6+y compound, which allows us to disentangle the effect of disorder, controlled by random Ca2+ substitution, from that of mere doping. A 3D phase diagram of lightly doped cuprates is accurately drawn, showing that a thermally activated antiferromagnetic phase competes with superconductivity around a quantum critical point, hidden underneath a frozen insulating magnetic state. Disorder suppresses both competing order parameters and unveils the underlying frozen state. Doping and disorder destroy the activated magnetic phase along a line of first order phase transitions that ends at the critical point.

Nanoscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states within the FeAs layers of CeFeAsO1-xFx

We report on the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states in CeFeAsO1-xFx for x=0.06(2), characterized by transition temperatures T_m=30 K and T_c=18 K, respectively. Zero and transverse field muon-spin relaxation measurements show that below 10 K the two phases coexist within a nanoscopic scale over a large volume fraction. This result clarifies the nature of the magnetic-to-superconducting transition in the CeFeAsO1-xFx phase diagram, by ruling out the presence of a quantum critical point which was suggested by earlier studies.

The magnetic states of lightly hole-doped cuprates in the clean limit

We have performed extensive zero field muSR experiments on pure YBa2Cu3O6+y and diluted Y-rare-earth substituted Y0.92Eu0.08Ba2Cu3O6+y and Y0.925Nd0.075Ba2Cu3O6+y at light hole-doping. A common magnetic behavior is detected for all the three families, demonstrating negligible effects of the isovalent Y-substituent disorder. Two distinct regimes are identified, separated by a crossover, whose origin is attributed to the concurrent thermal activation of spin and charge degrees of freedom: a thermally activated and a re-entrant quenched-hole antiferromagnetic regime. The peculiar temperature and hole density dependence of the magnetic moment m(h,T) fit a model with a (spin) activation energy for the crossover between the two regimes throughout the entire investigated range. The magnetic moment is suppressed by a simple dilution mechanism both in the reentrant regime (0<h<0.056) and in the so-called Cluster Spin Glass state coexisting with superconductivity (0.056<h<0.08). We argue a common magnetic ground state for these two doping regions and dub it quenched-hole antiferromagnet. Conversely frustration prevails in the thermally activated regime, that vanishes at the same concentration where superconductivity emerges, suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point at h_c=0.056(2).

Intrinsic ferromagnetic impurity phases in SmFeAsO1-xFx detected by muSR

We report about muSR measurements on SmFeAsO1-xFx which helped us to identify the signature of diluted ferromagnetic inclusions, ubiquitous in the iron pnictides. These impurities are characterized by a Curie temperature close to room temperature and they seem responsible for a non negligible magnetic relaxation of the implanted muons, that should not be confused with intrinsic pnictide properties.

Magnetic-superconducting phase boundary of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ studied via muon spin rotation: Unified behavior in a pnictide family

We present uSR investigations on SmFeAsO_1-xF_x showing coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity only in a very narrow F-doping range. The sharp crossover between the two types of order is similar to that observed in LaFeAsO_1-xF_x, suggesting a common behavior for the 1111 pnictides. The analysis of the muon asymmetry demonstrates that the coexistence must be nanoscopic, i.e. the two phases must be finely interspersed over a typical length-scale of few nm. In this regime both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures collapse to very low values. Our data suggest a competition between the two order parameters

Experimental evidence of chemical-pressure-controlled superconductivity in cuprates

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high resolution X-ray diffraction are combined to study the interplay between electronic and lattice structures in controlling the superconductivity in cuprates with a model charge-compensated CaxLa1-xBa1.75-xLa0.25+xCu3Oy (0<x<0.5, y=7.13) system. In spite of a large change in Tc, the doped holes, determined by the Cu L and O K XAS, hardly show any variation with the x. On the other hand, the CuO2 plaquette size shows a systematic change due to different size of substituted cations. The results provide a direct evidence for the chemical pressure being a key parameter for controlling the superconducting ground state of the cuprates.

Short note on magnetic impurities in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x=0, 0.07) compounds revealed by zero-field $^{75}$As NMR

We have performed zero-field $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance study of SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x=0, 0.07) polycrystals in a wide frequency range at various temperatures. $^{75}$As resonance line was found at around 265 MHz revealing the formation of the intermetallic FeAs clusters in the new layered superconductors. We have also demonstrated that NMR is a sensitive tool for probing the quality of these materials.

Magnetic order in double-layer manganites (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7: intrinsic properties and role of the intergrowths

We report on an investigation of the double-layer manganite series (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 (0 <= z <= 1), carried out on single crystals by means of both macroscopic magnetometry and local probes of magnetism (muSR, 55Mn NMR). Muons and NMR demonstrate an antiferromagnetically ordered ground state at non-ferromagnetic compositions (z >= 0.6), while more moderate Pr substitutions (0.2 <= z <= 0.4) induce a spin reorientation transition within the ferromagnetic phase. A large magnetic susceptibility is detected at {Tc,TN} < T < 250K at all compositions. From 55Mn NMR spectroscopy, such a response is unambiguously assigned to the intergrowth of a ferromagnetic pseudocubic phase (La(1-z)Pr(z))(1-x)Sr(x)MnO3, with an overall volume fraction estimated as 0.5-0.7% from magnetometry. Evidence is provided for the coupling of the magnetic moments of these inclusions with the magnetic moments of the surrounding (La(1-z)Pr(z))1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 phase, as in the case of finely dispersed impurities. We argue that the ubiquitous intergrowth phase may play a role in the marked first-order character of the magnetic transition and the metamagnetic properties above Tc reported for double-layer manganites.

Modification of magnetic and transport properties of manganite layers in Au/La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO_3/SrTiO_3 interfaces

The effect of gold capping on magnetic and transport properties of optimally doped manganite thin films is studied. An extraordinary suppression of conductivity and magnetic properties occurs in epitaxial (001) La_0.67Sr_0.33MnO_3 (LSMO) films grown on SrTiO_3 upon deposition of 2 nm of Au: in the case of ultrathin films of LSMO (4 nm thick) the resistivity increases by four orders of magnitude while the Curie temperature decreases by 180 K. Zero-field 55Mn nuclear magnetic resonance reveals a significant reduction of ferromagnetic double-exchange mechanism in manganite films upon the gold capping. We find evidence for the formation of a 1.9-nm thick magnetic "dead-layer" at the Au/LSMO interface, associated with the creation of interfacial non double-exchange insulating phases.

Evidence of orbital reconstruction at interfaces in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 films

Electronic properties of transition metal oxides at interfaces are influenced by strain, electric polarization and oxygen diffusion. Linear dichroism (LD) x-ray absorption, diffraction, transport and magnetization on thin La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films, allow identification of a peculiar universal interface effect. We report the LD signature of preferential 3d-eg(3z2-r2) occupation at the interface, suppressing the double exchange mechanism. This surface orbital reconstruction is opposite of that favored by residual strain and independent of dipolar fields, chemical nature of the substrate and capping.

Evidence of two distinct charge carriers in underdoped high Tc cuprates

We present results on heavily underdoped Y_1-xCa_xBa_2Cu_3O_6+y which provide the evidence that the doping mechanism (cation substitution or oxygen loading) directly determines whether the corresponding injected mobile holes contribute to superconductivity or only to the normal metallic properties. We argue that this hole tagging calls for a subtler description of the correlated bands than the usual one. We also map in great detail the underdoped superconducting phase diagram T_c vs. hole doping which shows that the number of mobile holes is not the critical parameter for the superconductivity.

Muon Spin Spectroscopy evidence of the violation of Anderson condition in magnetite

We present new muon spectroscopy data on a Fe$_3$O$_4$ single crystal, revealing different spin precession patterns in five distinct temperature ranges. A careful analysis of the local field and its straightforward modeling obtains surprisingly good agreement with experiments only if a very specific model of localized charges violating Anderson condition, and a correlated muon local dynamics are implemented. Muon evidence for fluctuations just above the Verwey temperature, precursor of the low temperature charge localized state, is provided.
