Two critical localization lengths in the Anderson transition on random graphs

We present a full description of the nonergodic properties of wavefunctions on random graphs without boundary in the localized and critical regimes of the Anderson transition. We find that they are characterized by two critical localization lengths: the largest one describes localization along rare branches and diverges with a critical exponent $ν_\parallel=1$ at the transition. The second length, which describes localization along typical branches, reaches at the transition a finite universal value (which depends only on the connectivity of the graph), with a singularity controlled by a new critical exponent $ν_\perp=1/2$. We show numerically that these two localization lengths control the finite-size scaling properties of key observables: wavefunction moments, correlation functions and spectral statistics. Our results are identical to the theoretical predictions for the typical localization length in the many-body localization transition, with the same critical exponent. This strongly suggests that the two transitions are in the same universality class and that our techniques could be directly applied in this context.

Routes towards the experimental observation of the large fluctuations due to chaos assisted tunneling effects with cold atoms

In the presence of a complex classical dynamics associated with a mixed phase space, a quantum wave function can tunnel between two stable islands through the chaotic sea, an effect that has no classical counterpart. This phenomenon, referred to as chaos assisted tunneling, is characterized by large fluctuations of the tunneling rate when a parameter is varied. To date the full extent of this effect as well as the associated statistical distribution have never been observed in a quantum system. Here we analyze the possibility of characterizing these effects accurately in a cold atom experiment. Using realistic values of the parameters of an experimental setup, we examine through analytical estimates and extensive numerical simulations a specific system that can be implemented with cold atoms, the atomic modulated pendulum. We assess the efficiency of three possible routes to observe in detail chaos assisted tunneling properties. Our main conclusion is that due to the fragility of the symmetry between positive and negative momenta as a function of quasimomentum, it is very challenging to use tunneling between classical islands centered on fixed points with opposite momentum. We show that it is more promising to use islands symmetric in position space, and characterize the regime where it could be done. The proposed experiment could be realized with current state-of-the-art technology.

Origin of emission from square-shaped organic microlasers

The emission from open cavities with non-integrable features remains a challenging problem of practical as well as fundamental relevance. Square-shaped dielectric microcavities provide a favorable case study with generic implications for other polygonal resonators. We report on a joint experimental and theoretical study of square-shaped organic microlasers exhibiting a far-field emission that is strongly concentrated in the directions parallel to the side walls of the cavity. A semiclassical model for the far-field distributions is developed that is in agreement with even fine features of the experimental findings. Comparison of the model calculations with the experimental data allows the precise identification of the lasing modes and their emission mechanisms, providing strong support for a physically intuitive ray-dynamical interpretation. Special attention is paid to the role of diffraction and the finite side length.

Multifractality of quantum wave functions in the presence of perturbations

We present a comprehensive study of the destruction of quantum multifractality in the presence of perturbations. We study diverse representative models displaying multifractality, including a pseudointegrable system, the Anderson model and a random matrix model. We apply several types of natural perturbations which can be relevant for experimental implementations. We construct an analytical theory for certain cases, and perform extensive large-scale numerical simulations in other cases. The data are analyzed through refined methods including double scaling analysis. Our results confirm the recent conjecture that multifractality breaks down following two scenarios. In the first one, multifractality is preserved unchanged below a certain characteristic length which decreases with perturbation strength. In the second one, multifractality is affected at all scales and disappears uniformly for a strong enough perturbation. Our refined analysis shows that subtle variants of these scenarios can be present in certain cases. This study could guide experimental implementations in order to observe quantum multifractality in real systems.

Two scenarios for quantum multifractality breakdown

We expose two scenarios for the breakdown of quantum multifractality under the effect of perturbations. In the first scenario, multifractality survives below a certain scale of the quantum fluctuations. In the other one, the fluctuations of the wave functions are changed at every scale and each multifractal dimension smoothly goes to the ergodic value. We use as generic examples a one-dimensional dynamical system and the three-dimensional Anderson model at the metal-insulator transition. Based on our results, we conjecture that the sensitivity of quantum multifractality to perturbation is universal in the sense that it follows one of these two scenarios depending on the perturbation. We also discuss the experimental implications.

Trace formula for dielectric cavities III: TE modes

The construction of the semiclassical trace formula for the resonances with the transverse electric (TE) polarization for two-dimensional dielectric cavities is discussed. Special attention is given to the derivation of the two first terms of Weyl's series for the average number of such resonances. The obtained formulas agree well with numerical calculations for dielectric cavities of different shapes.

Trace formula for chaotic dielectric resonators tested with microwave experiments

We measured the resonance spectra of two stadium-shaped dielectric microwave resonators and tested a semiclassical trace formula for chaotic dielectric resonators proposed by Bogomolny et al. [Phys. Rev. E 78, 056202 (2008)]. We found good qualitative agreement between the experimental data and the predictions of the trace formula. Deviations could be attributed to missing resonances in the measured spectra in accordance with previous experiments [Phys. Rev. E 81, 066215 (2010)]. The investigation of the numerical length spectrum showed good qualitative and reasonable quantitative agreement with the trace formula. It demonstrated, however, the need for higher-order corrections of the trace formula. The application of a curvature correction to the Fresnel reflection coefficients entering the trace formula yielded better agreement, but deviations remained, indicating the necessity of further investigations.

Trace formula for dielectric cavities II: Regular, pseudo-integrable, and chaotic examples

Dielectric resonators are open systems particularly interesting due to their wide range of applications in optics and photonics. In a recent paper [PRE, vol. 78, 056202 (2008)] the trace formula for both the smooth and the oscillating parts of the resonance density was proposed and checked for the circular cavity. The present paper deals with numerous shapes which would be integrable (square, rectangle, and ellipse), pseudo-integrable (pentagon) and chaotic (stadium), if the cavities were closed (billiard case). A good agreement is found between the theoretical predictions, the numerical simulations, and experiments based on organic micro-lasers.

Spectral statistics of a pseudo-integrable map: the general case

It is well established numerically that spectral statistics of pseudo-integrable models differs considerably from the reference statistics of integrable and chaotic systems. In [PRL,93 (2004) 254102] statistical properties of a certain quantized pseudo-integrable map had been calculated analytically but only for a special sequence of matrix dimensions. The purpose of this paper is to obtain the spectral statistics of the same quantum map for all matrix dimensions.

Near integrable systems

A two-dimensional circular quantum billiard with unusual boundary conditions introduced by Berry and Dennis (\emph{J Phys A} {\bf 41} (2008) 135203) is considered in detail. It is demonstrated that most of its eigenfunctions are strongly localized and the corresponding eigenvalues are close to eigenvalues of the circular billiard with Neumann boundary conditions. Deviations from strong localization are also discussed. These results agree well with numerical calculations.

Trace formula for dieletric cavities : I. General properties

The construction of the trace formula for open dielectric cavities is examined in detail. Using the Krein formula it is shown that the sum over cavity resonances can be written as a sum over classical periodic orbits for the motion inside the cavity. The contribution of each periodic orbit is the product of the two factors. The first is the same as in the standard trace formula and the second is connected with the product of reflection coefficients for all points of reflection with the cavity boundary. Two asymptotic terms of the smooth resonance counting function related with the area and the perimeter of the cavity are derived. The coefficient of the perimeter term differs from the one for closed cavities due to unusual high-energy asymptotics of the $\mathbf{S}$-matrix for the scattering on the cavity. Corrections to the leading semi-classical formula are briefly discussed. Obtained formulas agree well with numerical calculations for circular dielectric cavities.

Circular dielectric cavity and its deformations

The construction of perturbation series for slightly deformed dielectric circular cavity is discussed in details. The obtained formulae are checked on the example of cut disks. A good agreement is found with direct numerical simulations and far-field experiments.

Inferring periodic orbits from spectra of simple shaped micro-lasers

Dielectric micro-cavities are widely used as laser resonators and characterizations of their spectra are of interest for various applications. We experimentally investigate micro-lasers of simple shapes (Fabry-Perot, square, pentagon, and disk). Their lasing spectra consist mainly of almost equidistant peaks and the distance between peaks reveals the length of a quantized periodic orbit. To measure this length with a good precision, it is necessary to take into account different sources of refractive index dispersion. Our experimental and numerical results agree with the superscar model describing the formation of long-lived states in polygonal cavities. The limitations of the two-dimensional approximation are briefly discussed in connection with micro-disks.

SLE description of the nodal lines of random wave functions

The nodal lines of random wave functions are investigated. We demonstrate numerically that they are well approximated by the so-called SLE_6 curves which describe the continuum limit of the percolation cluster boundaries. This result gives an additional support to the recent conjecture that the nodal domains of random (and chaotic) wave functions in the semi classical limit are adequately described by the critical percolation theory. It is also shown that using the dipolar variant of SLE reduces significantly finite size effects.
