First Proton-Induced Cross Sections on a Stored Rare Ion Beam: Measurement of 118Te(p,γ) for Explosive Nucleosynthesis

We present the first nuclear cross-section measurements of (p,γ) and (p,n) reactions on 118Te at energies relevant for the γ-process nucleosynthesis. Absolute cross-section values for center-of-mass energies of 6, 7 and 10 MeV are provided, together with a theoretical extrapolation to the Gamow window. This experiment marks the first time that direct proton-induced reactions have been measured on a radioactive ion beam at the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. This paves the way for a large variety of measurements, delivering new constraints for explosive nucleosynthesis and for physics beyond nuclear stability.

Single and double $K$-shell vacancy production in slow Xe$^\textrm{54+,53+}$-Xe collisions

We present an experimental and theoretical study of symmetric $\textrm{Xe}^{54+}+\textrm{Xe}$ collisions at 50, 30, and 15 MeV/u, corresponding to strong perturbations with $v_K/v_\text{p}$ = 1.20, 1.55, and 2.20, respectively ($v_K$: classical $K$-shell orbital velocity, $v_\text{p}$: projectile velocity), as well as $\textrm{Xe}^{53+}+\textrm{Xe}$ collisions at 15 MeV/u. For each of these systems, x-ray spectra were measured under a forward angle of $35^\circ$ with respect to the projectile beam. Target satellite and hypersatellite radiation, $Kα_{2,1}^\mathrm{s}$ and $Kα_{2,1}^\mathrm{hs}$, respectively, were analyzed and used to derive cross section ratios for double-to-single target $K$-shell vacancy production. We compare our experimental results to relativistic time-dependent two-center calculations.

Electron-loss-to-continuum cusp in collisions of U$^{89+}$ with N$_{2}$ and Xe

We study the electron-loss-to-continuum (ELC) cusp experimentally and theoretically by comparing the ionization of U$^{89+}$ projectiles in collisions with N$_2$ and Xe targets, at a beam energy of 75.91 MeV/u. The coincidence measurement between the singly ionized projectile and the energy of the emitted electron is used to compare the shape of the ELC cusp at weak and strong perturbations. A significant energy shift for the centroid of the electron cusp is observed for the heavy target of Xe as compared to the light target of N$_2$. Our results provide a stringent test for fully relativistic calculations of double-differential cross sections performed in the first-order approximation and in the continuum-distorted-wave approach.

New Test of Modulated Electron Capture Decay of Hydrogen-Like $^{142}$Pm Ions: Precision Measurement of Purely Exponential Decay

An experiment addressing electron capture (EC) decay of hydrogen-like $^{142}$Pm$^{60+}$ ions has been conducted at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI. The decay appears to be purely exponential and no modulations were observed. Decay times for about 9000 individual EC decays have been measured by applying the single-ion decay spectroscopy method. Both visually and automatically analysed data can be described by a single exponential decay with decay constants of 0.0126(7) s$^{-1}$ for automatic analysis and 0.0141(7) s$^{-1}$ for manual analysis. If a modulation superimposed on the exponential decay curve is assumed, the best fit gives a modulation amplitude of merely 0.019(15), which is compatible with zero and by 4.9 standard deviations smaller than in the original observation which had an amplitude of 0.23(4).

Imaging the He$_2$ quantum halo state using a free electron laser

We report on coulomb explosion imaging of the wavefunction of the quantum halo system He$_2$. Each atom of this system is ionized by tunnelionization in a femto second laser pulse and in a second experiment by single photon ionization employing a free electron laser. We visualize the exponential decay of the probability density of the tunneling particle over distance for over two orders of magnitude up to an internuclear distance of 250 Å. By fitting the slope of the density in the tunneling regime we obtain a binding energy of 151.9 $\pm$ 13.3 neV, which is in agreement with most recent calculations.

Mixing Effects in the Crystallization of Supercooled Quantum Binary Liquids

By means of Raman spectroscopy of liquid microjets we have investigated the crystallization process of supercooled quantum liquid mixtures composed of parahydrogen (pH$_2$) diluted with small amounts of up to 5\% of either neon or orthodeuterium (oD$_2$), and of oD$_2$ diluted with either Ne or pH$_2$. We show that the introduction of Ne impurities affects the crystallization kinetics in both the pH$_2$-Ne and oD$_2$-Ne mixtures in terms of a significant reduction of the crystal growth rate, similarly to what found in our previous work on supercooled pH$_2$-oD$_2$ liquid mixtures [M. Kühnel et {\it al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{89}, 180506(R) (2014)]. Our experimental results, in combination with path-integral simulations of the supercooled liquid mixtures, suggest in particular a correlation between the measured growth rates and the ratio of the effective particle sizes originating from quantum delocalization effects. We further show that the crystalline structure of the mixture is also affected to a large extent by the presence of the Ne impurities, which likely initiate the freezing process through the formation of Ne crystallites.

Nuclear Physics Experiments with Ion Storage Rings

In the last two decades a number of nuclear structure and astrophysics experiments were performed at heavy-ion storage rings employing unique experimental conditions offered by such machines. Furthermore, building on the experience gained at the two facilities presently in operation, several new storage ring projects were launched worldwide. This contribution is intended to provide a brief review of the fast growing field of nuclear structure and astrophysics research at storage rings.

Compact Cryogenic Source of Periodic Hydrogen and Argon Droplet Beams for Relativistic Laser-Plasma Generation

We present a cryogenic source of periodic streams of micrometer-sized hydrogen and argon droplets as ideal mass-limited target systems for fundamental intense laser-driven plasma applications. The highly compact design combined with a high temporal and spatial droplet stability makes our injector ideally suited for experiments using state-of-the-art high-power lasers in which a precise synchronization between the laser pulses and the droplets is mandatory. We show this by irradiating argon droplets with multi-Terawatt pulses.

Interatomic Coulombic Decay following Photoionization of the Helium Dimer: Observation of Vibrational Structure

Using synchrotron radiation we simultaneously ionize and excite one helium atom of a helium dimer (He_2) in a shakeup process. The populated states of the dimer ion (i.e. He^[*+](n = 2; 3)-He) are found to deexcite via interatomic coulombic decay. This leads to the emission of a second electron from the neutral site and a subsequent coulomb explosion. In this letter we present a measurement of the momenta of fragments that are created during this reaction. The electron energy distribution and the kinetic energy release of the two He^+ ions show pronounced oscillations which we attribute to the structure of the vibrational wave function of the dimer ion.

Single photon double ionization of the helium dimer

We show that a single photon can ionize the two helium atoms of the helium dimer in a distance up to 10 °A. The energy sharing among the electrons, the angular distributions of the ions and electrons as well as comparison with electron impact data for helium atoms suggest a knock-off type double ionization process. The Coulomb explosion imaging of He_2 provides a direct view of the nuclear wave function of this by far most extended and most diffuse of all naturally existing molecules.

Localization of Inner-Shell Photoelectron Emission and Interatomic Coulombic Decay in Ne$_2$

We used Cold Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) to investigate the decay of Ne$_2$ after K-shell photoionization. The breakup into Ne$^{1+}$ / Ne$^{2+}$ shows interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) occurring after a preceding atomic Auger decay. The molecular frame angular distributions of the photoelectron and the ICD electron show distinct, asymmetric features, which imply localization of the K-vacancy created at one of the two atomic sites of the Ne$_2$ and an emission of the ICD electron from a localized site. The experimental results are supported by calculations in frozen core Hartree-Fock approach.

Expansion of Solid Helium into Vacuum: the Geyser Effect

The particle flux through a two micron diameter orifice into vacuum from a source chamber filled with solid He exhibits a striking periodic behavior similar to that of a geyser. This phenomenon is attributed to a periodic collapse of the solid inside the source induced by the accumulation of excess vacancies injected at the orifice. The flux-time curves agree well with a kinetic model and provide direct information on the diffusivity of vacancies in solid He.

Determination of Atom-Surface van der Waals Potentials from Transmission-Grating Diffraction Intensities

Molecular beams of rare gas atoms and D_2 have been diffracted from 100 nm period SiN_x transmission gratings. The relative intensities of the diffraction peaks out to the 8th order depend on the diffracting particle and are interpreted in terms of effective slit widths. These differences have been analyzed by a new theory which accounts for the long-range van der Waals -C_3/l^3 interaction of the particles with the walls of the grating bars. The values of the C_3 constant for two different gratings are in good agreement and the results exhibit the expected linear dependence on the dipole polarizability.
