Excitation spectra of the two dimensional Kondo insulator

We present a Quantum Monte Carlo study of the temperature dependent dynamics of the two-dimensional Kondo insulator. Working at the so-called symmetrical point allows to perform minus-sign free QMC simulations. Study of the temperature dependence of the single-particle Green's function and the dynamical spin correlation function provides evidence for two characteristic temperatures, which we associate with the Kondo and coherence temperature, whereby the system shows a metal-insulator transition at the coherence temperature. The data shows evidence for two distinct types of spin excitations and we show that despite strong antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperature the system cannot be described by spin-density-wave theory.

Hubbard Fermi surface in the doped paramagnetic insulator

We study the electronic structure of the doped paramagnetic insulator by finite temperature Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the 2D Hubbard model. Throughout we use the moderately high temperature T=0.33t, where the spin correlation length has dropped to < 1.5 lattice spacings, and study the evolution of the band structure with hole doping. The effect of doping can be best described as a rigid shift of the chemical potential into the lower Hubbard band, accompanied by some transfer of spectral weight. For hole dopings <20% the Luttinger theorem is violated, and the Fermi surface volume, inferred from the Fermi level crossings of the `quasiparticle band', shows a similar topology and doping dependence as predicted by the Hubbard I and related approximations.

Fermiology of a 1D heavy electron metal

We present a Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) study of the 1D Kondo lattice at non-integer filling, i.e. a one-dimensional version of a heavy electron metal. For this special system the minus-sign problem turns out to be strongly reduced, which allows QMC simulations for temperatures as low as 1% of the conduction electron bandwidth. The single particle Green's function shows and intricate network of low-energy bands at low temperature, with a Fermi surface volume that comprises both c and f-electrons. As temperature increases the system evolves through two distinct crossover temperatures into a very simple band structure with one free c-electron band and a disconnected upper and lower Hubbard band for f-electrons. The f-electrons thus `drop out' of the Fermi surface volume as temperature increases.

Paramagnetic metal-insulator transition in the 2D Hubbard model

We study the transition from paramagnetic metal to paramagnetic insulator by finite temperature Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the 2D Hubbard model at half-filling. Working at the moderately high temperature T=0.33*t where the spin correlation length has dropped to 1.5 lattice spacings, and scanning the interaction strength U, we observe an unambiguous metal-insulator transition with onset at U_c=4t. In the metallic phase there are no indications of any `correlation narrowing' of the band width, nor for any decrease of spectral weight at the Fermi energy. The Mott-Hubbard gap opens gradually with increasing U and is accompanied by the formation of side bands near the Fermi energy. In the first stages of gap formation the gap opens at (pi,0), reminiscent of the `pseudogap' phenomenology in cuprate superconductors.

Excitation spectrum of the homogeneous spin liquid

We discuss the excitation spectrum of a disordered, isotropic and translationally invariant spin state in the 2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The starting point is the nearest-neighbor RVB state which plays the role of the vacuum of the theory, in a similar sense as the Neel state is the vacuum for antiferromagnetic spin wave theory. We discuss the elementary excitations of this state and show that these are not Fermionic spin-1/2 `spinons' but spin-1 excited dimers which must be modeled by bond Bosons. We derive an effective Hamiltonian describing the excited dimers which is formally analogous to spin wave theory. Condensation of the bond-Bosons at zero temperature into the state with momentum (pi,pi) is shown to be equivalent to antiferromagnetic ordering. The latter is a key ingredient for a microscopic interpretation of Zhang's SO(5) theory of cuprate superconductivity

Theory of magnetic excitations in the Kondo lattice

We present a theory for the spin excitations of the Kondo lattice. We derive an effective Hamiltonian, which describes Fermionic spin 1/2 charge fluctuations interacting with Bosonic triplet spin fluctuations. We show that already the simplest approximation possible, i.e. replacing the magnon self-energy by the free polarization bubble for the charge excitation Greens function, gives a quantitative description of the `spin gap' and `charge gap' as obtained in numerical calculations for the Kondo insulator.

Excitation spectrum of the S=1/2 quantum spin ladder with frustration: elementary quasiparticles and many-particle bound states

We study the excitation spectrum of the two-chain S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with additional inter-chain second-neighbor frustrating interactions. The one and two-particle excitations are analyzed by using a mapping of the model onto a Bose gas of hard-core triplets. We find that low-lying singlet and triplet two-particle bound states are present and their binding energy increases with increasing frustration. In addition, many-particle bound states are found by a combination of variational and exact diagonalization techniques. We prove that the larger the number of bound quasiparticles the larger the binding energy. Thus the excitation spectrum has a complex structure and consists of elementary triplets and collective many-particle singlet and triplet excitations which generally mix with the elementary ones. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition from an antiferromagnetic ladder phase (small frustration) into Haldane phase (effectively ferromagnetic ladder for large frustration). We argue that near the transition point the spectrum in both triplet and singlet channels becomes gapless. The excitation wave function is dominated by large-size bound states which leads to the vanishing of the quasiparticle residue.

SO(5) Symmetry in t-J and Hubbard Models

Numerical and analytical results are reviewed, which support SO(5) symmetry as a concept unifying superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the high-temperature superconductors. Exact cluster diagonalizations verify that the low-energy states of the two-dimensional t-J and Hubbard models, widely used microscopic models for the high-Tc cuprates, form SO(5) symmetry multiplets. Apart from a small standard deviation ~J/10, these multiplets become degenerate at a critical chemical potential (transition into doped system). As a consequence, the d-wave superconducting states away from half-filling are obtained from the higher spin states at half-filling through SO(5) rotations. Between one and two dimensions, using weak-coupling renormalization, a rather general ladder Hamiltonian including next-nearest-neighbor hopping can be shown to flow to an SO(5) symmetric point. Experimental tests and consequences such as the existence of a pi-Goldstone mode both in the insulator and superconductor and, in particular, the relationship between the photoemission spectra of the insulator and superconductor, are emphasized.

Dynamics of an SO(5) symmetric ladder model

We discuss properties of an exactly SO(5) symmetric ladder model. In the strong coupling limit we demonstrate how the SO(3)-symmetric description of spin ladders in terms of bond Bosons can be upgraded to an SO(5)-symmetric bond-Boson model, which provides a particularly simple example for the concept of SO(5) symmetry. Based on this representation we show that antiferro- magnetism on one hand and superconductivity on the other hand can be understood as condensation of either magnetic or charged Bosons into an RVB vacuum. We identify exact eigenstates of a finite cluster with general multiplets of the SO(5) group, and present numerical results for the single particle spectra and spin/charge correlation functions of the SO(5)-symmetric model and identify `fingerprints' of SO(5) symmetry in these. In particluar we show that SO(5) symmetry implies a `generalized rigid band behavior' of the photoemission spectrum, i.e. spectra for the doped case are rigorously identical to spectra for spin-polarized states at half-filling. We discuss the problem of adiabatic continuity between the SO(5) symmetric ladder and the actual t-J ladder and demonstrate the feasibility of a `Landau mapping' between the two models.

Temperature dependent band structure of the Kondo insulator

We present a Qantum Monte Carlo (QMC) study of the temperature dependent dynamics of the Kondo insulator. Working at the so-called symmetrical point allows to perform minus-sign free QMC simulations and thus reach temperatures of less than 1% of the conduction electron bandwidth. Study of the temperature dependence of the single particle Green's function and dynamical spin correlation function shows a surprisingly intricate low temperature band structure and gives evidence for two characteristic temperatures, which we identify with the Kondo and coherence temperature, respectively. In particular, the data show a temperature induced metal-insulator transition at the coherence temperature.

Dynamics of spin ladders

We derive an approximate theory for Heisenberg spin ladders with two legs by mapping the spin dynamics onto the problem of hard-core `bond-Bosons'. The parameters of the Bosonic Hamiltonian are obtained by matching anomalous Green's functions to Lanczos results and we find evidence for a strong renormalization due to quantum fluctuations. Various dynamical spin correlation functions are calculated and found to be in good agreement with Lanczos results. We then enlarge the effective Hamiltonian to describe the coupling of the bond-Bosons to a single hole injected into the system and treat the hole-dynamics within the `rainbow-diagram' approximation by Schmidt-Rink et. al. Theoretical predictions for the single hole spectral function are obtained and found to be in good agreement with Lanczos results.

Many-body band structure and Fermi surface of the Kondo lattice

We present a theory for the single particle excitations and Fermi surface of the Kondo lattice. Thereby we construct an effective Hamiltonian describing the creation and propagation of single particle-like charge fluctuations on an `RVB-background' of local singlets. The theory may be viewed as a `Fermionic version' of linear spin wave theory and is of comparable simplicity, so that the calculations for the strong-coupling limit can be performed analytically. We calculate the single particle spectral function for the standard Kondo lattice as well as for several extended versions: with a Coulomb repulsion between conduction and f-electrons, Coulomb repulsion between conduction electrons, and a `breathing' f-orbital. In all cases we study the evolution of the spectrum in going from the Kondo insulator to the Heavy electron metal. We compare our results to exact diagonalization of small clusters and find remarkable agreement in nearly all cases studied. In the metallic case the f-electrons participate in the Fermi surface volume even if they are replaced by localized Kondo-spins and the number of bands, their dispersion and spectral character, and the nontrivial (i.e. non-rigid band-like) doping dependence including a pronounced transfer of spectral weight are reproduced by the theory.

Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectra of the effective d-wave model for cuprate superconductivity

An exact-diagonalization technique on finite-size clusters is used to study the ground state and excitation spectra of the two-dimensional effective fermion model, a fictious model of hole quasiparticles derived from numerical studies of the two-dimensional t-J model at low doping. We show that there is actually a reasonable range of parameter values where the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing of holes occurs and the low-lying excitation can be described by the picture of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in the BCS pairing theory. The gap parameter of a size $Δ_d\simeq 0.13|V|$ (where $V$ is the attractive interaction between holes) is estimated at low doping levels. The paired state gives way to the state of clustering of holes for some stronger attractions.

From Antiferromagnetism to Superconductivity: Numerical Evidence for SO(5) Symmetry

In this work, we present numerical results which support SO(5) symmetry as a concept unifying superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the high-temperature superconductors. Using exact cluster diagonalization, we verify the recently proposed SO(5) multiplet structures for a widely used microscopic model, the t-J model. Our results show that the d-wave superconducting ground states away from half-filling are obtained from the higher spin states at half-filling through SO(5) rotations, that the dominant low energy resonance in the dynamical spin correlation function corresponds to a `pi-resonance' in the entire low doping region, and that the SO(5) symmetry is robust against inclusion of longer ranged Coulomb repulsion and next-nearest neighbor hopping.

The 1D t-J model with next-nearest neighbor hopping - breakdown of the Luttinger liquid?

We investigate the effect of a next-nearest neighbor hopping integral t' in the 1D t-J model, using Lanczos diagonalization of finite chains. Surprisingly, even moderate values of t' have a quite dramatic effect on the dynamical correlation functions and Fermi surface volume. The `holon' becomes diffuse and overdamped, the band structure near the Fermi energy is dominated by t'. Most importantly, however, with increasing hole concentration the system undergoes a phase transition from a `hole pocket' Fermi surface, where k_F corresponds to the number of holes rather than electrons, to a high doping phase where the doped holes correspond to spinless Fermions. Neither phase thus has a Fermi momentum compatible with the `standard' Luttinger liquid.

Landau mapping and Fermi liquid parameters of the 2D t-J model

We study the momentum distribution function n(k) in the 2D t-J model on small clusters by exact diagonalization. We show that n(k) can be decomposed systematically into two components with Bosonic and Fermionic doping dependence. The Bosonic component originates from the incoherent motion of holes and has no significance for the low energy physics. For the Fermionic component we exlicitely perform the one-to-one Landau mapping between the low lying eigenstates of the t-J model clusters and those of an equivalent system of spin-1/2 quasiparticles. This mapping allows to extract the quasiparticle dispersion, statistics, and Landau parameters. The results show conclusively that the 2D t-J model for small doping is a Fermi liquid with a `small' Fermi surface and a moderately strong attractive interaction between the quasiparticles.

Kondo--lattice-like effects of hydrogen in transition metals

We discuss the possibility of a Kondo like effect associated with H in metals resulting from the strong dependence of the H1s orbital radius on the occupation number. We demonstrate that such a strong breathing property of the orbital radius, which translates directly into a strong occupation dependent hopping, results in the formation of local singlet-like bound states involving one electron on H and one on the surrounding metal orbitals. We also show that already at a mean field level an occupation dependent hopping integral leads to a substantial potential energy correction on hydrogen, and that the failure of LDA to incorporate this correction is probably responsible for the incorrect prediction of a metallic ground state for the YH3 switchable mirror compounds.

Charged excitons in doped extended Hubbard model systems

We show that the charge transfer excitons in a Hubbard model system including nearest neighbor Coulomb interactions effectively attain some charge in doped systems and become visible in photoelectron and inverse photoelectron spectroscopies. This shows that the description of a doped system by an extended Hubbard model differs substantially from that of a simple Hubbard model. Longer range Coulomb interactions cause satellites in the one electron removal and addition spectra and the appearance of spectral weight if the gap of doped systems at energies corresponding to the excitons of the undoped systems. The spectral weight of the satellites is proportional to the doping times the coordination number and therefore is strongly dependent on the dimension.
