Iterative path integral summation for nonequilibrium quantum transport

We have developed a numerically exact approach to compute real-time path integral expressions for quantum transport problems out of equilibrium. The scheme is based on a deterministic iterative summation of the path integral (ISPI) for the generating function of nonequilibrium observables of interest, e.g., the charge current or dynamical quantities of the central part. Self-energies due to the leads, being nonlocal in time, are fully taken into account within a finite memory time, thereby including non-Markovian effects. Numerical results are extra-polated first to vanishing (Trotter) time discretization and, second, to infinite memory time...

Even-odd parity effects in Majorana junctions

We study a general Majorana junction, where N helical nanowires are connected to a common s-wave superconductor proximity-inducing Majorana bound states in the wires. The normal part of each wire (j=1,...,N) acts as connected lead, where electrons can tunnel into the respective Majorana state γ_{A,j}. The Majorana states at the other end, γ_{B,j}, are coupled to each other by an arbitrary tunnel matrix. We examine the conditions for even-odd parity effects in the tunnel conductance for various junction topologies.

Bound States and Supercriticality in Graphene-Based Topological Insulators

We study the bound state spectrum and the conditions for entering a supercritical regime in graphene with strong intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit interactions within the topological insulator phase. Explicit results are provided for a disk-shaped potential well and for the Coulomb center problem

Majorana single-charge transistor

We study transport through a Coulomb blockaded topologically nontrivial superconducting wire (with Majorana end states) contacted by metallic leads. An exact formula for the current through this interacting Majorana single-charge transistor is derived in terms of wire spectral functions. A comprehensive picture follows from three different approaches. We find Coulomb oscillations with universal halving of the finite-temperature peak conductance under strong blockade conditions, where the valley conductance mainly comes from elastic cotunneling. The nonlinear conductance exhibits finite-voltage sidebands due to anomalous tunneling involving Cooper pair splitting.

Supercurrent blockade in Josephson junctions with a Majorana wire

We study the Josephson effect for a topologically nontrivial superconducting (TS) wire with Majorana fermion end states and tunnel-coupled to s-wave BCS superconducting (S) electrodes. In an S-TS junction, no supercurrent flow is possible under fairly general conditions. For the S-TS-S junction, bulk TS quasiparticles must be accessible to have a Josephson effect. In the noninteracting case, we derive the exact current-phase relation (CPR) and find π-periodic behavior with negative critical current for weak tunnel couplings. Charging effects then cause the anomalous CPR $I(φ)=I_c \cosφ$, where the parity-sensitive critical current I_c provides a signature for Majorana states.

Iterative summation of path integrals for nonequilibrium molecular quantum transport

We formulate and apply a nonperturbative numerical approach to the nonequilibrium current, $I(V)$, through a voltage-biased molecular conductor. We focus on a single electronic level coupled to an unequilibrated vibration mode (Anderson-Holstein model), which can be mapped to an effective three-state problem. Performing an iterative summation of real-time path integral (ISPI) expressions, we accurately reproduce known analytical results in three different limits. We then study the crossover regime between those limits and show that the Franck-Condon blockade persists in the quantum-coherent low-temperature limit, with a nonequilibrium smearing of step features in the $IV$ curve.

Landau levels, edge states, and strained magnetic waveguides in graphene monolayers with enhanced spin-orbit interaction

The electronic properties of a graphene monolayer in a magnetic and a strain-induced pseudo-magnetic field are studied in the presence of spin-orbit interactions (SOI) that are artificially enhanced, e.g., by suitable adatom deposition. For the homogeneous case, we provide analytical results for the Landau level eigenstates for arbitrary intrinsic and Rashba SOI, including also the Zeeman field. The edge states in a semi-infinite geometry are studied in the absence of the Rashba term. For a critical value of the magnetic field, we find a quantum phase transition separating two phases with spin-filtered helical edge states at the Dirac point. These phases have opposite spin current direction. We also discuss strained magnetic waveguides with inhomogeneous field profiles that allow for chiral snake orbits. Such waveguides are practically immune to disorder-induced backscattering, and the SOI provides non-trivial spin texture to these modes.

Coulomb blockade of Majorana fermion induced transport

We study Coulomb charging effects for transport through a topologically nontrivial superconducting wire, where Majorana bound states are present at the interface to normal-conducting leads. We construct the general Keldysh functional integral representation, and provide detailed results for the nonlinear current-voltage relation under weak Coulomb blockade conditions.

Energy spectrum and broken spin-surface locking in topological insulator quantum dots

We consider the energy spectrum and the spin-parity structure of the eigenstates for a quantum dot made of a strong topological insulator. Using the effective low-energy theory in a finite-length cylinder geometry, numerical calculations show that even at the lowest energy scales, the spin direction in a topologically protected surface mode is not locked to the surface. We find "zero-momentum" modes, and subgap states localized near the "caps" of the dot. Both the energy spectrum and the spin texture of the eigenstates are basically reproduced from an analytical surface Dirac fermion description. Our results are compared to microscopic calculations using a tight-binding model for a strong topological insulator in a finite-length nanowire geometry.

Fluctuation relations and rare realizations of transport observables

Fluctuation relations establish rigorous identities for the nonequilibrium averages of observables. Starting from a general transport master equation with time-dependent rates, we employ the stochastic path integral approach to study statistical fluctuations around such averages. We show how under nonequilibrium conditions, rare realizations of transport observables are crucial and imply massive fluctuations that may completely mask such identities. Quantitative estimates for these fluctuations are provided. We illustrate our results on the paradigmatic example of a mesoscopic RC circuit.

Transient fluctuation relations for time-dependent particle transport

We consider particle transport under the influence of time-varying driving forces, where fluctuation relations connect the statistics of pairs of time reversed evolutions of physical observables. In many "mesoscopic" transport processes, the effective many-particle dynamics is dominantly classical, while the microscopic rates governing particle motion are of quantum-mechanical origin. We here employ the stochastic path integral approach as an optimal tool to probe the fluctuation statistics in such applications. Describing the classical limit of the Keldysh quantum nonequilibrium field theory, the stochastic path integral encapsulates the quantum origin of microscopic particle exchange rates. Dynamically, it is equivalent to a transport master equation which is a formalism general enough to describe many applications of practical interest. We apply the stochastic path integral to derive general functional fluctuation relations for current flow induced by time-varying forces. We show that the successive measurement processes implied by this setup do not put the derivation of quantum fluctuation relations in jeopardy. While in many cases the fluctuation relation for a full time-dependent current profile may contain excessive information, we formulate a number of reduced relations, and demonstrate their application to mesoscopic transport. Examples include the distribution of transmitted charge, where we show that the derivation of a fluctuation relation requires the combined monitoring of the statistics of charge and work.

Magnetic scattering of Dirac fermions in topological insulators and graphene

We study quantum transport and scattering of massless Dirac fermions by spatially localized static magnetic fields. The employed model describes in a unified manner the effects of orbital magnetic fields, Zeeman and exchange fields in topological insulators, and the pseudo-magnetic fields caused by strain or defects in monolayer graphene. The general scattering theory is formulated, and for radially symmetric fields, the scattering amplitude and the total and transport cross sections are expressed in terms of phase shifts. As applications, we study ring-shaped magnetic fields (including the Aharanov-Bohm geometry) and scattering by magnetic dipoles.

Spin-orbit coupling and spectral function of interacting electrons in carbon nanotubes

The electronic spin-orbit coupling in carbon nanotubes is strongly enhanced by the curvature of the tube surface and has important effects on the single-particle spectrum. Here, we include the full spin-orbit interaction in the formulation of the effective low-energy theory for interacting electrons in metallic single-wall carbon nanotubes and study its consequences. The resulting theory is a four-channel Luttinger liquid, where spin and charge modes are mixed. We show that the analytic structure of the spectral function is strongly affected by this mixing, which can provide an experimental signature of the spin-orbit interaction.

Helical Luttinger liquid in topological insulator nanowires

We derive and analyze the effective low-energy theory for interacting electrons in a cylindrical nanowire made of a strong topological insulator. Three different approaches provide a consistent picture for the band structure, where surface states forming inside the bulk gap correspond to one-dimensional bands indexed by total angular momentum. When a half-integer magnetic flux pierces the nanowire, we find a strongly correlated helical Luttinger liquid topologically protected against weak disorder. We describe how transport experiments can detect this state.

Multiparticle equations for interacting Dirac Fermions in graphene nanostructures

We study the energy of quasi-particles in graphene within the Hartree-Fock approximation. The quasi-particles are confined via an inhomogeneous magnetic field and interact via the Coulomb potential. We show that the associated functional has a minimizer and determine the stability conditions for the N-particle problem in such a graphene quantum dot.

Comparative study of theoretical methods for nonequilibrium quantum transport

We present a detailed comparison of three different methods designed to tackle nonequilibrium quantum transport, namely the functional renormalization group (fRG), the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG), and the iterative summation of real-time path integrals (ISPI). For the nonequilibrium single-impurity Anderson model (including a Zeeman term at the impurity site), we demonstrate that the three methods are in quantitative agreement over a wide range of parameters at the particle-hole symmetric point as well as in the mixed-valence regime. We further compare these techniques with two quantum Monte Carlo approaches and the time-dependent numerical renormalization group method.

Adiabatic polaron dynamics and Josephson effect in a superconducting molecular quantum dot

We study the Josephson current through a resonant level coupled to a vibration mode (local Holstein model) in the adiabatic limit of low oscillator frequency. A semiclassical theory is then appropriate and allows us to consider the oscillator dynamics within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for arbitrary electron-vibration couplings. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation has been solved in the most relevant underdamped limit and yields the oscillator distribution function and the Josephson current. Remarkably, a transition from single-well to double-well behavior of the effective oscillator potential surface is possible and can be tuned by variation of the superconducting phase difference. The Josephson current is shown to be only weakly affected by the electron-vibration coupling due to strong phonon localization near the bottom of the potential surface.

Josephson effect for SU(4) carbon nanotube quantum dots

We present the theory of the Josephson effect in nanotube dots where an SU(4) symmetry can be realized. We find a remarkably rich phase diagram that significantly differs from the SU(2) case. In particular, π-junction behavior is largely suppressed. We analytically obtain the Josephson current in various parameter regions: (i) in the Kondo regime, covering the full crossover from SU(4) to SU(2), (ii) for weak tunnel couplings, and (iii) for large BCS gap. The transition between these regions is studied numerically.
