Search for Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background in the Full KamLAND Dataset with Neural-Network-Based Event Classification

We report a search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) with the KamLAND detector, targeting electron antineutrinos via inverse beta decay in the neutrino energy range of 8.3 to 30.8 MeV. Using liquid-scintillator exposures of 9.02 kton-year for 8.3 to 9.3 MeV and 9.42 kton-year for 9.3 to 30.8 MeV, we observe seven candidate events after applying a new deep-neural-network-based event classification technique. This result is consistent with the background-only expectation of 16.2 plus or minus 9.4 events, including systematic uncertainties associated with the neural-network selection. A spectral analysis of the energy and radial distributions finds no significant excess attributable to the DSNB. We therefore set 90 percent confidence-level upper limits on the DSNB flux of 38 to 43 per square centimeter per second, depending on the assumed DSNB model. We also derive model-independent 90 percent confidence-level upper limits on the electron-antineutrino flux, obtaining some of the most stringent constraints below 13.3 MeV. Beyond the DSNB search itself, this work demonstrates neural-network-based event classification as a promising approach for suppressing neutron-associated backgrounds in liquid-scintillator neutrino detectors.

Tuning of magnetic quantum criticality in artificial Kondo superlattice CeRhIn5/YbRhIn5

The effects of reduced dimensions and the interfaces on antiferromagnetic quantum criticality are studied in epitaxial Kondo superlattices, with alternating $n$ layers of heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn$_5$ and 7 layers of normal metal YbRhIn$_5$. As $n$ is reduced, the Kondo coherence temperature is suppressed due to the reduction of effective Kondo screening. The Néel temperature is gradually suppressed as $n$ decreases and the quasiparticle mass is strongly enhanced, implying dimensional control toward quantum criticality. Magnetotransport measurements reveal that a quantum critical point is reached for $n=3$ superlattice by applying small magnetic fields. Remarkably, the anisotropy of the quantum critical field is opposite to the expectations from the magnetic susceptibility in bulk CeRhIn$_5$, suggesting that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking at the interface plays a key role for tuning the quantum criticality in the two-dimensional Kondo lattice.

Field-induced superconducting phase of FeSe in the BCS-BEC cross-over

Fermi systems in the crossover regime between weakly coupled Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and strongly coupled Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) limits are among the most fascinating objects to study the behavior of an assembly of strongly interacting particles. The physics of this crossover has been of considerable interest both in the fields of condensed matter and ultracold atoms. One of the most challenging issue in this regime is the effect of large spin imbalance on a Fermi system under magnetic fields. Although several exotic physical properties have been predicted theoretically, the experimental realization of such an unusual superconducting state has not been achieved so far. Here we show that pure single crystals of superconducting FeSe offer the possibility to enter the previously unexplored realm where the three energies, Fermi energy $\varepsilon_{\rm F}$, superconducting gap $Δ$ and Zeeman energy, become comparable. Through the superfluid response, transport, thermoelectric response, and spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that $\varepsilon_{\rm F}$ of FeSe is extremely small, with the ratio $Δ/\varepsilon_{\rm F}\sim1 (\sim0.3)$ in the electron (hole) band. Moreover, thermal-conductivity measurements give evidence of a distinct phase line below the upper critical field, where the Zeeman energy becomes comparable to $\varepsilon_{\rm F}$ and $Δ$. The observation of this field-induced phase provides insights into previously poorly understood aspects of the highly spin-polarized Fermi liquid in the BCS-BEC crossover regime.

Controllable Rashba spin-orbit interaction in artificially engineered superlattices involving the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

By using a molecular beam epitaxy technique, we fabricate a new type of superconducting superlattices with controlled atomic layer thicknesses of alternating blocks between heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5, which exhibits a strong Pauli pair-breaking effect, and nonmagnetic metal YbCoIn_5. The introduction of the thickness modulation of YbCoIn_5 block layers breaks the inversion symmetry centered at the superconducting block of CeCoIn_5. This configuration leads to dramatic changes in the temperature and angular dependence of the upper critical field, which can be understood by considering the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction arising from the inversion symmetry breaking and the associated weakening of the Pauli pair-breaking effect. Since the degree of thickness modulation is a design feature of this type of superlattices, the Rashba interaction and the nature of pair-breaking are largely tunable in these modulated superlattices with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Gaugeon Formalism for Spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger Gauge Field

We provide a gauge covariant formalism of the canonically quantized theory of spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger gauge field. The theory admits a quantum gauge transformation by which we can shift the gauge fixing parameter. The quantum gauge transformation does not change the BRST charge. Thus, the physical Hilbert space is trivially independent of the gauge fixing parameter.

BRST Symmetric Gaugeon Formalism for Yang-Mills Fields

Yokoyama's gaugeon formalism is knwon to admit $q$-number gauge transformation. We introduce BRST symmetries into the formalism for the Yang-Mills gauge field. Owing to the BRST symmetry, Yokoyama's physical subsidiary conditions are replaced by a single condition of the Kugo-Ojima type. Our physical subsidiary condition is invariant under the $q$-number gauge transformation. Thus, our physical subspace is gauge invariant.

An Extension of Type I Gaugeon Formalism for Quantum Electrodynamics

By introducing two kinds of gaugeon fields, we extend Yokoyama's Type I gaugeon formalism for quantum electrodynamics. The theory admits a q-number gauge transformation by which we can shift the gauge parameter into arbitrary numerical value; whereas in the original theory we cannot change the sign of the parameter. The relation to the Type II theory is also discussed.

Gaugeon Formalism with BRST Symmetry

We provide a BRST symmetric version of Yokoyama's Type I gaugeon formalism for quantum electrodynamics; the similar theory by Izawa can be considered as a BRST symmetrized Type II theory. With the help of the BRST symmetry, Yokoyama's physical subsidiary conditions are replaced by the Kugo-Ojima type condition. As a result, the formalism becomes applicable even in the background gravitational field. We show how the Hilbert spaces of standard formalism in various gauges are embedded in the single Hilbert space of the present formalism. We also give a path integral derivation of the Lagrangian.
