Quantum oscillations and linear magnetoresistance in ultraclean CaVO$_3$ thin films

Advances in epitaxy of transition metal oxides with perovskite structure allow novel insights into transport mechanisms of strongly correlated electron systems, which are of interest for future transparent electronics. In this study, we investigate magnetotransport properties of thin epitaxial CaVO$_3$ films, grown coherently strained on LaAlO$_3$, and demonstrate for the ultraclean limit quantum oscillations. Fermi liquid behavior is detected in the temperature-dependent resistivity $\rho(T) \sim T^2$ up to 20 K, with effective mean free paths exceeding up to 20 times the film thickness (38 nm). Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and a non-linear Hall resistance reveal two electron-like (1 and 2) and one hole-like (h) carriers, reflecting the three-fold Fermi surface of orthorhombic CaVO$_3$, with effective charge carrier densities and mobilities at 4.2 K of: (1) $n_1 \approx 9.3 \cdot 10^{21}{}cm^{-3}$ with low mobility $\mu_1 \approx 926{}cm^{2}V^{-1}s^{-1}$, (2) $n_2 \approx 7.2 \cdot 10^{19}{}cm^{-3}$ with high mobility $\mu_2 \approx 6600 {}cm^{2}V^{-1}s^{-1}$, and (h) $n_h \approx 2.2 \cdot 10^{18}{}cm^{-3}$ with $\mu_h \approx 1500{}cm^{2}V^{-1}s^{-1}$. A non-saturating linear magnetoresistance dominates at low temperatures, exceeding the value for single crystals by 30$\%$. Our findings on epitaxial films demonstrate the delicate interplay of multiple carriers with correlations stemming from a non-spherical nested Fermi surface of a perovskite structure with orthorhombic distortion.

Large-area synthesis of ferromagnetic Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$/graphene van der Waals heterostructures with Curie temperature above room temperature

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures combining layered ferromagnets and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals are promising building blocks for the realization of ultra-compact devices with integrated magnetic, electronic and optical functionalities. Their implementation in various technologies depends strongly on the development of a bottom-up scalable synthesis approach allowing to realize highly uniform heterostructures with well-defined interfaces between different 2D layered materials. It also requires that each material component of the heterostructure remains functional, which ideally includes ferromagnetic order above room temperature for 2D ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate large-area growth of Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$/graphene heterostructures achieved by vdW epitaxy of Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ on epitaxial graphene. Structural characterization confirmed the realization of a continuous vdW heterostructure film with a sharp interface between Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ and graphene. Magnetic and transport studies revealed that the ferromagnetic order persists well above 300 K with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In addition, epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) continues to exhibit a high electronic quality. These results represent an important advance beyond non-scalable flake exfoliation and stacking methods, thus marking a crucial step toward the implementation of ferromagnetic 2D materials in practical applications.

Influence of spin and orbital fluctuations on Mott-Hubbard exciton dynamics in LaVO${}_{3}$ Thin Films

Recent optical conductivity measurements reveal the presence of Hubbard excitons in certain Mott insulators. In light of these results, it is important to revisit the dynamics of these materials to account for excitonic correlations. We investigate time-resolved excitation and relaxation dynamics as a function of temperature in perovskite-type LaVO${}_{3}$ thin films using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. LaVO${}_{3}$ undergoes a series of phase transitions at roughly the same critical temperature $T_C\cong 140\ K$, including a second-order magnetic phase transition (PM $\xrightarrow{}$ AFM) and a first-order structural phase transition, accompanied by \textit{C}-type spin order (SO) and \textit{G}-type orbital order (OO). Ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy at 1.6 eV monitors changes in the spectral weight of the Hubbard exciton resonance which serves as a sensitive reporter of spin and orbital fluctuation dynamics. We observe dramatic slowing down of the spin, and orbital dynamics in the vicinity of $T_C\cong 140$ K, reminiscent of a second-order phase transition, despite the (weakly) first-order nature of the transition. We emphasize that since it is spectral weight changes that are probed, the measured dynamics are not reflective of conventional exciton generation and recombination, but are related to the dynamics of Hubbard exciton formation in the presence of a fluctuating many-body environment.

Measurement and simulation of anisotropic magnetoresistance in single GaAs/MnAs core/shell nanowires

We report four probe measurements of the low field magnetoresistance in single core/shell GaAs/MnAs nanowires synthesized by molecular beam epitaxy, demonstrating clear signatures of anisotropic magnetoresistance that track the field-dependent magnetization. A comparison with micromagnetic simulations reveals that the principal characteristics of the magnetoresistance data can be unambiguously attributed to the nanowire segments with a zinc blende GaAs core. The direct correlation between magnetoresistance, magnetization and crystal structure provides a powerful means of characterizing individual hybrid ferromagnet/semiconductor nanostructures.
