C*-Algebras, Approximately Proper Equivalence Relations, and Thermodynamic Formalism

We introduce a non-commutative generalization of the notion of (approximately proper) equivalence relation and propose the construction of a "quotient space". We then consider certain one-parameter groups of automorphisms of the resulting C*-algebra and prove the existence of KMS states at every temperature. In a model originating from Thermodynamics we prove that these states are unique as well. We also show a relationship between maximizing measures (the analogue of the Aubry-Mather measures for expanding maps) and ground states. In the last section we explore an interesting example of phase transitions.

C*-Algebras of Irreversible Dynamical Systems

We show that certain C*-algebras which have been studied among others by Arzumanian, Vershik, Deaconu, and Renault in connection to a measure preserving transformation of a measure space and/or to a covering map of a compact space are special cases of the endomorphism crossed-product construction recently introduced by the first named author. As a consequence these algebras are given presentations in terms of generators and relations. These results come as a consequence of a general Theorem on faithfulness of representations which are covariant with respect to certain circle actions. For the case of topologically free covering maps we prove a stronger result on faithfulness of representations which needs no covariance. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for simplicity.

Partial Representations and Partial Group Algebras

The partial group algebra of a group G over a field K, denoted by K_{par}(G), is the algebra whose representations correspond to the partial representations of G over K-vector spaces. In this paper we study the structure of the partial group algebra K_{par}(G), where G is a finite group. In particular, given two finite abelian groups G_1 and G_2, we prove that if the characteristic of K is zero, then K_{par}(G_1) is isomorphic to K_{par}(G_2) if and only if G_1 is isomorphic to G_2.
