Finite temperature corrections to weak rates prior to nucleosynthesis

We have reexamined the electromagnetic corrections to the weak interaction rates for the transformation of neutrons to protons, and protons to neutrons, in the early universe, before freeze-out. We derive compact expressions for these rates in terms of thermal expectation values of products of fields, and we give explicit constructions of the terms to order e^2. We disagree in several respects with results in the literature.

The Salpeter plasma correction for solar fusion reactions

We review five different derivations that demonstrate that the Salpeter formula for the plasma corrections to fusion rates is valid at the center of the sun with insignificant errors (~ percent). We point out errors in several recent papers that have obtained a variety of answers, some even with the wrong sign or the wrong functional dependence.

Coherent oscillation in a linear quantum system coupled to a thermal bath

We consider the time development of the density matrix for a system coupled to a thermal bath, in models that go beyond the standard two-level systems through addition of an energy excitation degree of freedom and through the possibility of the replacement of the spin algebra by a more complex algebra. We find conditions under which increasing the coupling to the bath above a certain level decreases the rate of entropy production, and in which the limiting behavior is a dissipationless sinusoidal oscillation that could be interpreted as the synchronization of many modes of the uncoupled system.

Do neutrinos have mass only within matter?

We look at the possibility that appreciable neutrino masses and flavor mixing occur only within material media, driven by an interaction between leptons and a very light scalar particle. Limits are placed on the scalar particle mass and coupling constants from a number of experimental and astrophysical considerations.

On some singularities of the correlation functions that determine neutrino opacities

Certain perturbation graphs in the calculation of the effects of the medium on neutrino scattering in supernova matter have a nonintegrable singularity in a physical region. A number of papers have addressed the apparent pathology through an ansatz that invokes higher order (rescattering) effects. Taking the Gamow-Teller terms as an example, we display an expression for the spin-spin correlation function that determines the cross-sections. It is clear from the form that there are no pathologies in the order by order perturbation expansion. Explicit formulae are given for a simple case, leading to an answer that is very different from one given by other authors.

Many-Body Corrections to Charged-Current Neutrino Absorption Rates in Nuclear Matter

Including nucleon--nucleon correlations due to both Fermi statistics and nuclear forces, we have developed a general formalism for calculating the charged--current neutrino--nucleon absorption rates in nuclear matter. We find that at one half nuclear density many--body effects alone suppress the rates by a factor of two and that the suppression factors increase to $\sim$5 at $4\times10^{14}$ g cm$^{-3}$. The associated increase in the neutrino--matter mean--free--paths parallels that found for neutral--current interactions and opens up interesting possibilities in the context of the delayed supernova mechanism and protoneutron star cooling.

The Effects of Correlations on Neutrino Opacities in Nuclear Matter

Including nucleon-nucleon correlations due to both Fermi statistics and nuclear forces, we have developed a general formalism for calculating the neutral-current neutrino-nucleon opacities in nuclear matter. We derive corrections to the dynamic structure factors due to both density and spin correlations and find that neutrino-nucleon cross sections are suppressed by large factors around and above nuclear density. In addition, we find that the spectrum of energy transfers in neutrino scattering is considerably broadened by the interactions in the medium. An identifiable component of this broadening comes from the absorption and emission of quanta of collective modes akin to the Gamow-Teller and Giant Dipole resonances in nuclei (zero-sound; spin waves), with Čerenkov kinematics. Under the assumption that both the charged-current and the neutral-current cross sections are decreased by many-body effects, we calculate a set of ad hoc protoneutron star cooling models to gauge the potential importance of the new opacities to the supernova itself. We find that after many hundreds of milliseconds to seconds the driving neutrino luminosities might be increased by from 10% to 100%. However, the actual consequences, if any, of these new neutrino opacities remain to be determined.

Nuclear Electron Capture in a Plasma

We consider the electron density at the position of an ion of charge Ze in a plasma under conditions approximating those in the core of the sun. Numerical calculations have shown that the plasma effects on the density, over and above the ordinary Coulomb factors that are obtained in the absence of electron-electron interactions, are well represented by a reduction factor, exp{- Z e^2 beta kappa_D }, where beta is the inverse temperature and kappa_D is the Debye wave length. Although this factor is the direct analogue of the Salpeter enhancement factor for the fusion rates in stars, the elementary considerations that establish it in the fusion case are not applicable to the determination of the electron density and the resulting electron capture rates. We show analytically, through a sum rule that leads to a well-defined perturbative approach, that in the limit of Boltzmann statistics the Salpeter factor indeed provides the leading correction. We estimate residual effects, both from Fermi statistics and from short range terms.

Nuclear Reaction Rates in a Plasma

The problem of determining the effects of the surrounding plasma on nuclear reaction rates in stars is formulated ab initio, using the techniques of quantum statistical mechanics. We derive a result that expresses the complete effects of Coulomb barrier penetration and of the influence of the surrounding plasma in terms of matrix elements of well defined operators. We find that possible "dynamical screening" effects that have been discussed in the literature are absent. The form of our results suggests that an approach that relies on numerical calculations of the correlation functions in a classical Coulomb gas, followed by construction of an effective two body potential and a quantum barrier penetration calculation, will miss physics that is as important as the physics that it includes.
