Euclid preparation. Full-shape modelling of 2-point and 3-point correlation functions in real space

We investigate the accuracy and range of validity of the perturbative model for the 2-point (2PCF) and 3-point (3PCF) correlation functions in real space in view of the forthcoming analysis of the Euclid mission spectroscopic sample. We take advantage of clustering measurements from four snapshots of the Flagship I N-body simulations at z = {0.9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8}, which mimic the expected galaxy population in the ideal case of absence of observational effects such as purity and completeness. For the 3PCF we consider all available triangle configurations given a minimal separation. First, we assess the model performance by fixing the cosmological parameters and evaluating the goodness-of-fit provided by the perturbative bias expansion in the joint analysis of the two statistics, finding overall agreement with the data down to separations of 20 Mpc/h. Subsequently, we build on the state-of-the-art and extend the analysis to include the dependence on three cosmological parameters: the amplitude of scalar perturbations As, the matter density ωcdm and the Hubble parameter h. To achieve this goal, we develop an emulator capable of generating fast and robust modelling predictions for the two summary statistics, allowing efficient sampling of the joint likelihood function. We therefore present the first joint full-shape analysis of the real-space 2PCF and 3PCF, testing the consistency and constraining power of the perturbative model across both probes, and assessing its performance in a combined likelihood framework. We explore possible systematic uncertainties induced by the perturbative model at small scales finding an optimal scale cut of rmin = 30 Mpc/h for the 3PCF, when imposing an additional limitation on nearly isosceles triangular configurations included in the data vector. This work is part of a Euclid Preparation series validating theoretical models for galaxy clustering.

Euclid: Quick Data Release (Q1) -- Watching ICM-selected galaxy clusters with Euclid eyes -- prospects of Euclid data in the context of large SZ and X-ray based surveys

Galaxy clusters detected through their X-ray emission or Sunyaev--Zeldovich effect (SZE), both produced by the intra-cluster medium (ICM), are key probes in cosmological and astrophysical studies. To maximise the scientific return of such surveys, complementary data are required for cluster confirmation and redshift estimation. This is typically provided by wide-field optical and infrared surveys, which are increasingly challenged by ongoing and future ICM-selected samples. In particular, at high redshifts ($z>1$) probed by upcoming SZE-selected samples, current large surveys may be insufficient for reliable confirmation. Deep, high-resolution infrared surveys like Euclid will thus be essential for confirming most high-redshift clusters. We present an analysis of the first sizeable Euclid dataset (Q1), overlapping with several ICM-selected cluster samples. We apply an adaptation of the MCMF cluster confirmation tool to estimate key properties, including redshift and richness, and to predict Euclid's capabilities for high-redshift cluster confirmation. We find promising performance, particularly at high redshifts, while richness estimates at low redshifts ($z<0.4$) are currently limited by Q1 data quality but should improve with future releases. Using MCMF runs on random lines of sight, we predict that Euclid will confirm clusters at $1<z<2$ as effectively as current optical surveys at $z<0.6$, significantly enhancing high-redshift confirmation. SZE-selected samples will thus greatly benefit from Euclid overlap. Among five known high-$z$ SZE clusters in Q1, we identify the highest-redshift jellyfish galaxy candidate to date, EUCLJ035330.86$-$504347.6 in SPT-CLJ0353$-$5043 ($z=1.32$), two massive star-forming galaxies near ACT-CLJ0350.0$-$4819 ($z=1.46$), and strong lensing features in SPT-CLJ0353$-$5043 and SPT-CLJ0421$-$4845.

Improved measurement of absolute branching fraction of the inclusive decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0} X$

By analyzing $4.5$ fb$^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data accumulated with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies ranging from $4599.53$ MeV to $4698.82$ MeV, we report the measurement of the absolute branching fraction (BF) of the inclusive decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0} X$ using the double-tag technique. The result is $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0} X)=(10.9\pm0.2\pm0.1)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result indicates that there are still undiscovered decay channels containing $K_{S}^{0}$ in the final state with a combined BF of $(3.1\pm0.4)\%$. The BF of the inclusive decay $Λ_{c}^{+} \to \overline{K}^{0} / K^{0} X$ is calculated to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to \overline{K}^{0} / K^{0} X)=(21.8 \pm0.4 \pm0.2 \pm1.1)\%$, where the third uncertainty accounts for a possible difference between $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to K_{S}^{0} X)$ and $\mathcal{B}(Λ_{c}^{+} \to K_{L}^{0} X)$. The result is in agreement with the prediction of the statistical isospin model.

Measurement of the $η$ transition form factor through $η' \rightarrow π^+π^-η$ decay

Based on a sample of $(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10}$ $J/ψ$ events collected at BESIII, the transition form factor of the $η$ meson is extracted by analyzing $J/ψ\toγη',~η'\toπ^+π^-η,~η\toγl^+l^-$ ($l$=$e$, $μ$) events. The measured slope of the transition form factor is $Λ^{-2}=1.645\pm0.093_{\rm stat.}\pm {0.024_{\rm sys.}}$ (GeV/$c^2$)$^{-2}$ for the di-electron channel and $Λ^{-2}=1.645\pm0.343_{\rm stat.}\pm0.017_{\rm sys.}$ (GeV/$c^2$)$^{-2}$ for the di-muon channel. The branching fractions for $η\rightarrowγe^+e^-$ and $η\rightarrowγμ^+μ^-$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(η\toγe^+e^-)=(6.79\pm0.04_{\rm stat.}\pm0.36_{\rm sys.})\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(η\toγμ^+μ^-)=(2.97\pm0.11_{\rm stat.}\pm0.07_{\rm sys.})\times 10^{-4}$. By combining with the results based on the $J/ψ\toγη,~η\toγe^+e^-$ events from the previous BESIII measurement, we determine $Λ^{-2}=1.707\pm0.076_{\rm stat.}\pm0.029_{\rm sys.}$ (GeV/$c^2$)$^{-2}$ and $\mathcal{B}(η\toγe^+e^-)=(6.93\pm0.28_{\rm tot.})\times 10^{-3}$. In addition, we search for the dark photon ($A'$) using the combined events. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limits on $\mathcal{B}(η\toγA',~A'\to e^+e^-)$ are set at 90\% confidence level for different $A'$ mass hypotheses.

First observation of quantum correlations in $e^+e^-\to XD\bar{D}$ and $C$-even constrained $D\bar{D}$ pairs

The study of meson pairs produced with quantum correlations gives direct access to parameters that are challenging to measure in other systems. In this Letter, the existence of quantum correlations due to charge-conjugation symmetry $C$ are demonstrated in $D\bar{D}$ pairs produced through the processes $e^+e^-\to D\bar{D}$, $e^+e^- \to D^{*}\bar{D}$, and $e^+e^- \to D^{*} \bar{D}^*$, where the lack of charge superscripts refers to an admixture of neutral-charm-meson particle and antiparticle states, using $7.13 \text{ fb}^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII experiment between center-of-mass energies of $4.13-4.23 \text{ GeV}$. Processes with either $C$-even or $C$-odd constraints are identified and separated. A procedure is presented that harnesses the entangled production process to enable measurements of $D^0$-meson hadronic parameters. This study provides the first confirmation of quantum correlations in $e^+e^-\to X D\bar{D}$ processes and the first observation of a $C$-even constrained $D\bar{D}$ system. The procedure is applied to measure $δ^{D}_{Kπ}$, the strong phase between the $D^0\to K^-π^+$ and $\bar{D}^0\to K^-π^+$ decay amplitudes, which results in the determination of $δ^{D}_{Kπ}=\left(192.8^{+11.0 + 1.9}_{-12.4 -2.4}\right)^\circ$. The potential for measurements of other hadronic decay parameters and charm mixing with these and future datasets is also discussed.

A novel measurement of the strong-phase difference between $D^0\to K^-π^+$ and $\bar{D}^0\to K^-π^+$ decays using $C$-even and $C$-odd quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ pairs

A novel measurement technique of strong-phase differences between the decay amplitudes of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons is introduced which exploits quantum-correlated $D\bar{D}$ pairs produced by $e^+e^-$ collisions at energies above the $ψ(3770)$ production threshold, where $D\bar{D}$ pairs are produced in both even and odd eigenstates of the charge-conjugation symmetry. Employing this technique, the first determination of a $D^0$-$\bar{D^0}$ relative strong phase is reported with such data samples. The strong-phase difference between $D^0\to K^-π^+$ and $\bar{D}^0\to K^-π^+$ decays, $δ^{D}_{Kπ}$, is measured to be $δ^{D}_{Kπ}=\left(192.8^{+11.0 + 1.9}_{-12.4 -2.4}\right)^\circ$, using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.13 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between $4.13-4.23 \text{ GeV}$ by the BESIII experiment.

Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1): From images to multiwavelength catalogues: the Euclid MERge Processing Function

The Euclid satellite is an ESA mission that was launched in July 2023. \Euclid is working in its regular observing mode with the target of observing an area of $14\,000~\text{deg}^2$ with two instruments, the Visible Camera (VIS) and the Near IR Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) down to $I_{\rm E} = 24.5~\text{mag}$ ($10\, σ$) in the Euclid Wide Survey. Ground-based imaging data in the \textit{ugriz} bands complement the \Euclid data to enable photo-$z$ determination and VIS PSF modeling for week lensing analysis. Euclid investigates the distance-redshift relation and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and redshifts of galaxies and clusters of galaxies out to $z\sim 2$. Generating the multi-wavelength catalogues from \Euclid and ground-based data is an essential part of the \Euclid data processing system. In the framework of the \Euclid Science Ground Segment (SGS), the aim of the MER Processing Function (PF) pipeline is to detect objects in the \Euclid imaging data, measure their properties, and MERge them into a single multi-wavelength catalogue. The MER PF pipeline performs source detection on both visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) images and offers four different photometric measurements: Kron total flux, aperture photometry on PSF-matched images, template fitting photometry, and Sérsic fitting photometry. Furthermore, the MER PF pipeline measures a set of ancillary quantities, spanning from morphology to quality flags, to better characterise all detected sources. In this paper, we show how the MER PF pipeline is designed, detailing its main steps, and we show that the pipeline products meet the tight requirements that Euclid aims to achieve on photometric accuracy. We also present the other measurements (e.g. morphology) that are included in the OU-MER output catalogues and we list all output products coming out of the MER PF pipeline.

Search for $η_{1}(1855)$ in $χ_{cJ}\toηηη^{\prime}$ decays

Based on a sample of $2.7\times10^{9}$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected by the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, an analysis of the decay $ψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}, χ_{cJ}\toηηη^{\prime}$ is performed. The decay modes $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}\toηηη^{\prime}$ are observed for the first time, and their corresponding branching fractions are determined to be $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c1}\toηηη^{\prime}) = (1.40\, \pm 0.13\, (\text{stat.}) \pm 0.09\, (\text{sys.})) \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c2}\toηηη^{\prime}) = (4.18\, \pm 0.84\, (\text{stat.}) \pm 0.48\, (\text{sys.})) \times 10^{-5}$. An upper limit on the branching fraction of $χ_{c0}\toηηη^{\prime}$ is set as $2.59 \times 10^{-5}$ at 90\% confidence level (CL). A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the decay $χ_{c1}\toηηη^{\prime}$ is performed to search for the $1^{-+}$ exotic state $η_1(1855)$. The PWA result indicates that the structure in the $ηη^{\prime}$ mass spectrum is mainly attributed to the $f_0(1500)$, while in the $ηη$ mass spectrum, it is primarily the $0^{++}$ phase space. The upper limit of $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c1}\toη_{1}(1855)η) \cdot \mathcal{B}(η_{1}(1855)\toηη^{\prime})< 9.79 \times 10^{-5}$ is set based on the PWA at 90\% CL.

Performance of the image persistence model for Euclid infrared detectors

Large-format infrared detectors are at the heart of major ground and space-based astronomical instruments, and the HgCdTe HxRG is the most widely used. The Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) of the ESA's Euclid mission launched in July 2023 hosts 16 H2RG detectors in the focal plane. Their performance relies heavily on the effect of image persistence, which results in residual images that can remain in the detector for a long time contaminating any subsequent observations. Deriving a precise model of image persistence is challenging due to the sensitivity of this effect to observation history going back hours or even days. Nevertheless, persistence removal is a critical part of image processing because it limits the accuracy of the derived cosmological parameters. We will present the empirical model of image persistence derived from ground characterization data, adapted to the Euclid observation sequence and compared with the data obtained during the in-orbit calibrations of the satellite.

Observation of the $W$-annihilation process $D_s^+ \to ωρ^+$ and measurement of $D_s^+ \to ϕρ^+$ in $D^+_s\to π^+π^+π^-π^0π^0$ decays

We present the first amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay $D^+_s\to π^+π^+π^-π^0π^0$, using $e^+e^-$ collision data collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between 4.128 and 4.226 GeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.33 fb$^{-1}$, and report the first observation of the pure $W$-annihilation decay $D_s^+ \to ωρ^+$ with a branching fraction of $(0.99\pm0.08_{\rm stat}{\ ^{+0.05}_{-0.07}}_{\rm syst})\%$. %The absolute branching fraction is measured to be $(0.99\pm0.08_{\rm stat}\pm0.07_{\rm syst})\%$. In comparison to the low significance of the $\mathcal{D}$ wave in the decay $D_s^+ \to ϕρ^+$, the dominance of the $\mathcal{D}$ wave over the $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{P}$ waves, with a fraction of $(51.85\pm7.28_{\rm stat}{\ ^{+4.83}_{-7.90}}_{\rm syst})\%$ observed in the decay $D_s^+ \to ωρ^+$, provides crucial information for the``polarization puzzle", as well as for the understanding of charm meson decays. The branching fraction of $D^+_s\to π^+π^+π^-π^0π^0$ is measured to be ($4.41\pm0.15_{\rm stat}\pm0.13_{\rm syst}$)\%. Moreover, the branching fraction of $D_s^+ \to ϕρ^+$ is measured to be $(3.98\pm0.33_{\rm stat}{\ ^{+0.21}_{-0.19}}_{\rm syst})\%$, and the $R_ϕ= {\mathcal{B}(ϕ\toπ^+π^-π^0)}/{\mathcal{B}(ϕ\to K^+K^-)}$ is determined to be $(0.222\pm0.019_{\rm stat}{\ ^{+0.016}_{-0.016}}_{\rm syst}$), which is consistent with the previous measurement based on charm meson decays, but deviates from the results from $e^+e^-$ annihilation and $K$-$N$ scattering experiments by more than 3$σ$.

Test of local realism via entangled $Λ\barΛ$ system

The non-locality of quantum correlations is a fundamental feature of quantum theory. The Bell inequality serves as a benchmark for distinguishing between predictions made by quantum theory and local hidden variable theory (LHVT). Recent advancements in photon-entanglement experiments have addressed potential loopholes and have observed significant violations of variants of Bell inequality. However, examples of Bell inequalities violation in high energy physics are scarce. In this study, we utilize $(10.087\pm0.044)\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BES-III detector at the BEPCII collider, performing non-local correlation tests using the entangled hyperon pairs. The massive-entangled $Λ\barΛ$ systems are formed and decay through strong and weak interactions, respectively. Through measurements of the angular distribution of $p\bar{p}$ in $J/ψ\to γη_c$ and subsequent $η_c\toΛ(pπ^-)\barΛ(\bar{p}π^{+})$ cascade decays, a significant violation of LHVT predictions is observed. The exclusion of LHVT is found to be statistically significant at a level exceeding $5.2σ$ in the testing of three Bell-like inequalities.

Observation of an Altered $a_{0}(980)$ Line-shape in $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}ηη$ due to the Triangle Loop Rescattering Effect

Using 20.3~${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data taken with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy 3.773~GeV, we report the first amplitude analysis of the hadronic decay $D^{+} \rightarrow π^{+}ηη$. The intermediate process $D^{+} \to a_{0}(980)^{+}η, a_{0}(980)^{+} \to π^{+}η$ is observed and is found to be the only component and its branching fraction is measured to be $(3.67\pm0.12_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm 0.06_{\mathrm{syst.}})\times 10^{-3}$. Unlike the $a_{0}(980)$ line-shape observed in the decays of charmed mesons to $a_{0}(980)π$ and in the decay $D^{0} \to a_{0}(980)^{-}e^{+}ν_{e}$, where the low-mass side of the $a_0(980)$ is wider than the high-mass side, the $a_{0}(980)$ line-shape in $D^{+} \to a_{0}(980)^{+}η$ is found to be significantly altered, with the high-mass side being wider than the low-mass side. We establish that the $a_0(980)$ line-shape arises from the triangle loop rescattering of $D^+ \to \bar{K}_0^*(1430)^0K^+ \to a_0(980)^+ η$ and $D^+ \to K_0^*(1430)^+\bar{K}^0 \to a_0(980)^+ η$ with a significance of 5.8$σ$. This is the first experimental confirmation of the triangle loop rescattering effect.

Euclid Quick Data Release (Q1). A first view of the star-forming main sequence in the Euclid Deep Fields

The star-forming main sequence (SFMS) is a tight relation observed between stellar masses and star formation rates (SFR) in a population of galaxies. This relation is observed at different redshifts, in various morphological, and environmental domains, and is key to understanding the underlying relations between a galaxy budget of cold gas and its stellar content. Euclid Quick Data Release 1 (Q1) gives us the opportunity to investigate this fundamental relation in galaxy formation and evolution. We complement the Euclid release with public IRAC observations of the Euclid Deep Fields, improving the quality of recovered photometric redshifts, stellar masses, and SFRs, as is shown both with simulations and a comparison with available spectroscopic redshifts. From Q1 data alone, we recover more than $\sim 30\,\mathrm{k}$ galaxies with $\log_{10} (M_\ast/M_\odot) > 11$, giving a precise constraint of the SFMS at the high-mass end. We investigated the SFMS, in a redshift interval between $0.2$ and $3.0$, comparing our results with the existing literature and fitting them with a parameterisation taking into account the presence of a bending of the relation at the high-mass end, depending on the bending mass, $M_0$. We find good agreement with previous results in terms of $M_0$ values, and an increasing trend for the relation scatter at higher stellar masses. We also investigate the distribution of physical (e.g. dust absorption, $A_V$, and formation age) and morphological properties (e.g., Sérsic index and radius) in the SFR--stellar mass plane, and their relation with the SFMS. These results highlight the potential of Euclid in studying the fundamental scaling relations that regulate galaxy formation and evolution in anticipation of the forthcoming Data Release 1.

Measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η$

A high precision measurement of the branching fraction of the decay $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η$ is performed using $(10 087 \pm 44) \times 10^6$ $J/ψ$ events recorded by the {BESIII} detector at the {BEPCII} storage ring. The branching fractions of the two decays $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)$ and $J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)$ are measured individually to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to γγ)) = (1.480 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.024)\times\,10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η(η\to π^+ π^- π^0)) = (1.557 \pm 0.003 \pm 0.038)\times\,10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Both results are compatible within their uncorrelated systematic uncertainties. The combined result is $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to p \bar{p} η)=(1.495 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.023)\times\,10^{-3}$ where the first uncertainty is the combined statistical uncertainty and the second one the combined systematic uncertainty of both analyses, incorporating correlations between them. In addition, the $p \bar{p}$ threshold region is investigated for a potential threshold enhancement, and no evidence for one is observed.
