The polarization of the boundary layer around weakly magnetized neutron stars in X-ray binaries

X-ray binaries hosting a compact object have been among the main targets of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) since its launch, due to their high brightness in the 2-8 keV energy band. The spectropolarimetric analysis performed so far has proved to be of great importance in providing constraints on the accretion geometry of these systems. However, the data statistics is not enough to unambiguously disentangle the contribution of the single components to the net observed polarimetric signal. In this work, we aim to present a model for computing the polarization degree and polarization angle of the boundary layer around weakly magnetized neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries in the soft state. The main motivation is to provide strong theoretical support to data interpretation of observations performed by IXPE or future satellites for X-ray polarimetry. The results were obtained by modeling the boundary layer as an equatorial belt around the compact object and locally approximating it as a plane-parallel scattering atmosphere, for which the associated radiative transfer equation for polarized radiation in the Thomson limit was solved. The polarimetric quantities were then transformed from the comoving frame to the observer frame using the numerical methods formerly developed for X-ray pulsars. For typical values of the optical depth and electron temperature of the boundary layer of these systems in a soft state, the polarization degree was less then 0.5\%, while the polarization angle was rotated by $\protect \la 5^{\circ}$ with respect to the neutron star spin axis due to special and general relativistic effects for fast rotation, the amount progressively decreasing for lower spin frequencies. The derived quantities can be used to remove degeneracy when multicomponent spectropolarimetry is performed.

First Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry in the pure W-boson-exchange Decay $Λ_{c}^{+}\toΞ^{0}K^{+}$

Based on $4.4~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation data collected at the center-of-mass energies between $4.60$ and $4.70~\text{GeV}$ with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the pure \textit{W}-boson-exchange decay $Λ_{c}^{+}\toΞ^{0}K^{+}$ is studied with a full angular analysis. The corresponding decay asymmetry is measured for the first time to be $α_{Ξ^{0}K^{+}}=0.01\pm0.16({\rm stat.})\pm0.03({\rm syst.})$. This result reflects the non-interference effect between the $S$- and $P$-wave amplitudes. The phase shift between $S$- and $P$-wave amplitudes has two solutions, which are $δ_{p}-δ_{s}=-1.55\pm0.25({\rm stat.})\pm0.05({\rm syst.})~\text{rad}$ or $1.59\pm0.25({\rm stat.})\pm0.05({\rm syst.})~\text{rad}$.

Search for the light hadron decay $χ_{c1}(3872) \to π^{+}π^{-}η$

With a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 11.5~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, for the first time the light hadron decay $χ_{c1}(3872) \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}η$ is searched for. While no significant signal is observed, the upper limits at the 90\% confidence level for $σ[e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow γχ_{c1}(3872)] \mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-}η]$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.13 to 4.34 GeV are determined. By normalizing to the $χ_{c1}(3872)\toπ^+π^- J/ψ$ decay channel, a 90\% confidence level upper limit for the branching fraction ratio $\mathcal{R}=\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \rightarrowπ^{+}π^{-}η]/\mathcal{B}[χ_{c1}(3872) \rightarrow π^{+}π^{-} J/ψ] < 0.12$ is given. These measurements provide important inputs for understanding the internal structure of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ resonance.

First measurements of the absolute branching fraction of $Λ_{c}(2625)^{+}\to Λ^{+}_{c}π^+π^-$ and upper limit on $Λ_{c}(2595)^{+}\to Λ^{+}_{c}π^+π^-$

The absolute branching fraction of the decay $Λ_{c}(2625)^{+}\to Λ^{+}_{c}π^+π^-$ is measured for the first time to be $(50.7 \pm 5.0_{\rm{stat.}} \pm 4.9_{\rm{syst.}} )\%$ with 368.48 pb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 4.918$ and $4.950$ GeV. This result is lower than the naive prediction of 67\%, obtained from isospin symmetry, by more than $2σ$, thereby indicating that the novel mechanism referred to as the \textit{threshold effect}, proposed for the strong decays of $Λ_{c}(2595)^{+}$, also applies to $Λ_{c}(2625)^{+}$. This measurement is necessary to obtain the coupling constants for the transitions between $s$-wave and $p$-wave charmed baryons in heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory. In addition, we search for the decay $Λ_{c}(2595)^{+}\to Λ^{+}_{c}π^+π^-$. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on its branching fraction is determined to be 80.8\% at the 90\% confidence level.

Investigation of the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule and test of CP violation through the measurement of decay asymmetry parameters in $Ξ^-$ decays

Using $(10087\pm44)\times 10^{6}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, numerous $Ξ^-$ and $Λ$ decay asymmetry parameters are simultaneously determined from the process $J/ψ\to Ξ^- \barΞ^+ \to Λ(pπ^-) π^- \barΛ(\bar{n} π^0) π^+$ and its charge-conjugate channel. The precisions of $α_0$ for $Λ\to nπ^0$ and $\barα_0$ for $\barΛ \to \bar{n}π^0$ compared to world averages are improved by factors of 4 and 1.7, respectively. The ratio of decay asymmetry parameters of $Λ\to nπ^0$ to that of $Λ\to pπ^-$, $\langle α_0 \rangle/ \langle α_{Λ-} \rangle $, is determined to be $ 0.873 \pm 0.012^{+0.011}_{-0.010}$, where the first and the second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The ratio is smaller than unity more than $5σ$, which signifies the existence of the $ΔI = 3/2$ transition in $Λ$ for the first time. Beside, we test for CP violation in $Ξ^- \to Λπ^-$ and in $Λ\to n π^{0}$ with the best precision to date.

Observation of $χ_{cJ}\to 3(K^+K^-)$

By analyzing $(27.12\pm0.14)\times10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, the decay processes $χ_{cJ} \to 3(K^+K^-)$ ($J=0,1,2$) are observed for the first time with statistical significances of 8.2$σ$, 8.1$σ$, and 12.4$σ$, respectively. The product branching fractions of $ψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}$, $χ_{cJ}\to 3(K^+K^-)$ are presented and the branching fractions of $χ_{cJ}\to 3(K^+K^-)$ decays are determined to be $\mathcal{B}_{χ_{c0}\to 3(K^+K^-)}$=$(10.7\pm1.8\pm1.1)$$\times10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}_{χ_{c1}\to 3(K^+K^-)}$=$(4.2\pm0.9\pm0.5)$$\times10^{-6}$, and $\mathcal{B}_{χ_{c2}\to 3(K^+K^-)}$=$(7.2\pm1.1\pm0.8)$$\times10^{-6}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Precise measurement of the branching fractions of $J/ψ\rightarrow\barΛπ^{+}Σ^{-}+c.c.$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow\barΛπ^{-}Σ^{+}+c.c.$

Based on a data sample of $(10087\pm44)\times10^6$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the branching fraction of $J/ψ\rightarrow\barΛπ^{+}Σ^{-}+c.c.$ is measured to be $(1.221\pm 0.002\pm 0.038)\times10^{-3}$, and the branching fraction of its isospin partner mode $J/ψ\rightarrow\barΛπ^{-}Σ^{+}+c.c.$ is measured to be $(1.244\pm 0.002\pm 0.045)\times10^{-3}$ with improved precision. Here the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones systematic. The isospin symmetry of the $Σ$ baryon in charmonium hadronic decay and the "$12\%$ rule" are tested, and no violation is found. The potential of using these channels as $Σ$ baryon sources for nuclear physics research is studied, and the momentum and angular distributions of these sources are provided.

Polarised light from accreting low mass X-ray binaries

Thanks to IXPE , the X-ray spectro-polarimeter launched at the end of 2021, X-ray polarimetry has finally become an extraordinary tool in investigating the physics of accretion in low mass X-ray binaries. Similarly to what happened with gravitational waves, X-ray polarimetry would play a new complementary but at the same time fundamental role in the high-energy astrophysical domain. We summarize here the first 1.5 year results on accreting low-mass X-ray binaries obtained by a huge IXPE observation campaign coordinated with the principal X-ray and Gamma-ray telescopes. Then we compare these results with the theoretical prediction highlighting the unexpected results.

Measurements of $Σ$ electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region using the untagged initial-state radiation technique

The process $e^{+}e^{-}\toΣ^{+}\barΣ^{-}$ is studied from threshold up to 3.04 GeV/$c^2$ via the initial-state radiation technique using data with an integrated luminosity of 12.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.258 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The pair production cross sections and the effective form factors of $Σ$ are measured in eleven $Σ^{+}\barΣ^{-}$ invariant mass intervals from threshold to 3.04 GeV/$c^2$. The results are consistent with the previous results from Belle and BESIII. Furthermore, the branching fractions of the decays $J/ψ\toΣ^{+}\barΣ^{-}$ and $ψ(3686)\toΣ^{+}\barΣ^{-}$ are determined and the obtained results are consistent with the previous results of BESIII.

Observation of significant flavor-SU(3) breaking in the kaon wave function at $12~{\rm GeV}^2<Q^2<25~{\rm GeV}^2$ and discovery of the charmless decay $ψ(3770)\to K_S^0K_L^0$

We present cross sections for the reaction $e^+e^-\to K_S^0K_L^0$ at center-of-mass energies ranging from 3.51 GeV to 4.95 GeV using data samples collected in the BESIII experiment, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 26.5 fb$^{-1}$. The ratio of neutral-to-charged kaon form factors at large momentum transfers ($12~{\rm GeV}^2<Q^2<25~{\rm GeV}^2$) is determined to be $0.21\pm 0.01$, which indicates a small but significant effect of flavor-SU(3) breaking in the kaon wave function, and consequently excludes the possibility that flavor-SU(3) breaking is the primary reason for the strong experimental violation of the pQCD prediction $|F(π^{\pm})|/|F(K^{\pm})|=f^2_π/f^2_{K}$, where $F(π^{\pm})$ and $F(K^{\pm})$ are the form factors, and $f_π$ and $f_{K}$ are the decay constants of charged pions and kaons, respectively. We also observe a significant signal for the charmless decay $ψ(3770)\to K_S^0K_L^0$ for the first time. Within a $1σ$ contour of the likelihood value, the the branching fraction for $ψ(3770)\to K_S^0K_L^0$ is determined to be ${\cal B}=(2.63_{-1.59}^{+1.40})\times 10^{-5}$, and the relative phase between the continuum and $ψ(3770)$ amplitudes is $ϕ=(-0.39_{-0.10}^{+0.05})π$. The branching fraction is in good agreement with the $\mathcal{S}$- and $\mathcal{D}$-wave charmonia mixing scheme proposed in the interpretation of the "$ρπ$ puzzle" between $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays.

Search for the semi-muonic charmonium decay $J/ψ\to D^{-}μ^{+}ν_μ+c.c.$

Since no significant signal is observed, we set an upper limit of the branching fraction to be $\mathcal{B}(J/ψ\to D^{-}μ^{+}ν_μ+c.c.)<5.6\times10^{-7}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. This is the first search for the weak decay of charmonium with a muon in the final state.

Measurement of the cross section of $e^+e^-\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.843 GeV

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 12.9 $fb^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the exclusive Born cross sections and the effective form factors of the reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}$ are measured via the single baryon-tag method at 23 center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.843 GeV. Evidence for the decay $ψ(3770)\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}$ is observed with a significance of 4.5$σ$ by analyzing the measured cross sections together with earlier BESIII results. For the other charmonium(-like) states $ψ(4040)$, $ψ(4160)$, $Y(4230)$, $Y(4360)$, $ψ(4415)$, and $Y(4660)$, no significant signal of their decay to $Ξ^-\bar Ξ^+$ is found. For these states, upper limits of the products of the branching fraction and the electronic partial width at the 90% confidence level are provided.

Measurement of the cross sections for $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$ at center-of-mass energies between 2.00 and 3.08 GeV

Using data samples collected at center-of-mass energies between 2.000 and 3.080 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider, a partial-wave analysis is performed on the process $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$. In addition to the dominant $e^+e^-\toρη$ component, the $e^+e^-\to a_2(1320)π$ process is also sizeable, contributing up to 24% of the total reaction. The measured cross sections of the process $e^+e^-\toηπ^+π^-$ are systematically higher than those of BaBar by more than $3σ$ at center-of-mass energies between 2.000 and 2.300 GeV. In the cross section lineshape for $e^+e^-\to a_2(1320)π$, a resonant structure is observed with a significance of $5.5σ$, with $M=(2044\pm31\pm4)$ MeV/$c^2$, $Γ=(163\pm69\pm24)$ MeV and $\mathcal{B_{R}}\cdotΓ_{e^+e^-}^{R}=(34.6\pm17.1\pm6.0)$ eV or $(137.1\pm73.3\pm2.1)$ eV. In the cross section lineshape for $e^+e^-\toρη$, an evidence of a dip structure around 2180 MeV/$c^2$ is observed with statistical significance of $3.0σ$.

Observation of a vector charmoniumlike state at 4.7 ${\rm GeV}/c^2$ and search for $Z_{cs}$ in $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-J/ψ$

Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 5.85~fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.61 to 4.95 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the cross section for the process $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-J/ψ$. A new resonance with a mass of $M = 4708_{-15}^{+17}\pm21$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and a width of $Γ= 126_{-23}^{+27}\pm30$ MeV is observed in the energy-dependent line shape of the $e^+e^-\to K^+K^-J/ψ$ cross section with a significance over $5σ$. The $K^{+}J/ψ$ system is also investigated to search for charged charmoniumlike states, but no significant $Z_{cs}^+$ states are observed. Upper limits on the Born cross sections for $e^+e^-\to K^{-} Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}/K^{-} Z_{cs}(4000)^{+} + c.c.$ with $Z_{cs}(3985)^{\pm}/Z_{cs}(4000)^{\pm}\to K^{\pm} J/ψ$ are reported at 90\% confidence levels. Improved measurement of the decays $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{+(0)}π^{-(0)}$ and search for the rare decay $η' \to 4π^{0}$

Using a sample of 10 billion $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$, $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}π^{0}$ and $η' \to 4 π^{0}$ are studied via the process $J/ψ\toγη'$. The branching fractions of $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ and $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}$ $π^{0}$ are measured to be $( 8.56 \pm 0.25({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.23({\rm syst.}) ) \times {10^{ - 5}}$ and $(2.12 \pm 0.12({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.10({\rm syst.})) \times {10^{ - 4}}$, respectively, which are consistent with previous measurements but with improved precision. No significant $η' \to 4 π^{0}$ signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction of this decay is determined to be less than $1.24 \times {10^{-5}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level. In addition, an amplitude analysis of $η' \to π^{+}π^{-}π^{+}π^{-}$ is performed to extract the doubly virtual isovector form factor $α$ for the first time. The measured value of $α=1.22 \pm 0.33({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.04({\rm syst.})$, is in agreement with the prediction of the VMD model.

Study of the decay $J/ψ\to ϕπ^{0}η$

We observe for the first time two new structures on the $ϕη$ invariant mass distribution, with statistical significances of $24.0σ$ and $16.9σ$; the first with $J^{\rm PC}$ = $1^{+-}$, mass M = (1911 $\pm$ 6 (stat.) $\pm$ 14 (sys.))~MeV/$c^{2}$, and width $Γ= $ (149 $\pm$ 12 (stat.) $\pm$ 23 (sys.))~MeV, the second with $J^{\rm PC}$ = $1^{--}$, mass M = (1996 $\pm$ 11 (stat.) $\pm$ 30 (sys.))~MeV/$c^{2}$, and width $Γ$ = (148 $\pm$ 16 (stat.) $\pm$ 66 (sys.))~MeV. Euclid's Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer ready for flight -- review of final performance

ESA's mission Euclid, while undertaking its final integration stage, is fully qualified. Euclid will perform an extragalactic survey ($0<z<2$) by observing in the visible and near-infrared wavelength range. To detect infrared radiation, it is equipped with the Near Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP) instrument, operating in the 0.9--2 $μ$m range. In this paper, after introducing the survey strategy, we focus our attention on the NISP Data Processing Unit's Application Software, highlighting the experimental process to obtain the final parametrization of the on-board processing of data produced by the array of 16 Teledyne HAWAII-2RG (HgCdTe) detectors. We report results from the latest ground test campaigns with the flight configuration hardware - complete optical system (Korsh anastigmat telescope), detectors array (0.56 deg$^2$ field of view), and readout systems (16 Digital Control Units and Sidecar ASICs). The performance of the on-board processing is then presented. We also describe a major issue found during the final test phase. We show how the problem was identified and solved thanks to an intensive coordinated effort of an independent review `Tiger' team, lead by ESA, and a team of NISP experts from the Euclid Consortium. An extended PLM level campaign at ambient temperature in Liège and a dedicated test campaign conducted in Marseille on the NISP EQM model eventually confirmed the resolution of the problem. Finally, we report examples of the outstanding spectrometric (using a Blue and two Red Grisms) and photometric performance of the NISP instrument, as derived from the end-to-end payload module test campaign at FOCAL 5 -- CSL; these results include the photometric Point Spread Function (PSF) determination and the spectroscopic dispersion verification.
