Metal-rich Damped/sub-Damped Lyman-alpha Quasar Absorbers at z<1

Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), seen in absorption against a background quasar, provide the most detailed probes available of element abundances in the Universe over > 90 % of its age. DLAs can be used to observationally measure the global mean metallicity in the Universe and its evolution with time. Paradoxically, these observations are more difficult at lower redshifts, where the absorber rest-frame UV spectra are cut-off due to the atmospheric absorption. We present here high-resolution VLT/UVES observations of several elements contained in three DLAs and one sub-DLA with 0.6<z_abs<0.9. We detect Mg I, Mg II, Fe II, Zn II, Cr II, Mn II, Ti II and Ca II. Our observations more than double the high-resolution sample of [Zn/H] at z<1. We also report the discovery of three metal-rich systems, whereas most previous measurements show low N(HI)-weighted mean metallicity projecting to about 1/6th solar level at z=0. We derive [Zn/H]=-0.11+/-0.04 at z_abs=0.725, [Zn/H]=-0.54+/-0.20 at z_abs=0.740 and [Zn/H]=-0.49+/-0.22 at z_abs=0.652, plus one additional upper limit ([Zn/H]<-0.36 at z_abs=0.842). These measurements confirm the existence of quasar absorbers with relatively high metallicities based on abundance estimates free from the effect of dust depletion. Possible implications of these results for the metallicity of neutral gas phase in the past ~ 8 Gyr are presented and compared with models.

Galactic Bulge Microlensing Optical Depth from EROS-2

We present a new EROS-2 measurement of the microlensing optical depth toward the Galactic Bulge. Light curves of $5.6\times 10^{6}$ clump-giant stars distributed over $66 °^2$ of the Bulge were monitored during seven Bulge seasons. 120 events were found with apparent amplifications greater than 1.6 and Einstein radius crossing times in the range $5 {\rm d}<t_\e <400 {\rm d}$. This is the largest existing sample of clump-giant events and the first to include northern Galactic fields. In the Galactic latitude range $1.4\degr<|b|<7.0\degr$, we find $τ/10^{-6}=(1.62 \pm 0.23)\exp[-a(|b|-3 {\rm deg})]$ with $a=(0.43 \pm0.16)°^{-1}$. These results are in good agreement with our previous measurement, with recent measurements of the MACHO and OGLE-II groups, and with predictions of Bulge models.

The Most Metal-Rich Intervening Quasar Absorber Known

The metallicity in portions of high-redshift galaxies has been successfully measured thanks to the gas observed in absorption in the spectra of quasars, in the Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs). Surprisingly, the global mean metallicity derived from DLAs is about 1/10th solar at 0<z<4 leading to the so-called ``missing-metals problem''. In this paper, we present high-resolution observations of a sub-DLA system at z_abs=0.716 with super-solar metallicity toward SDSS J1323-0021. This is the highest metallicity intervening quasar absorber currently known, and is only the second super-solar absorber known to date. We provide a detailed study of this unique object from VLT/UVES spectroscopy. We derive [Zn/H]=+0.61, [Fe/H]=-0.51, [Cr/H]=<-0.53, [Mn/H] = -0.37, and [Ti/H] = -0.61. Observations and photoionisation models using the CLOUDY software confirm that the gas in this sub-DLA is predominantly neutral and that the abundance pattern is probably significantly different from a Solar pattern. Fe/Zn and Ti/Zn vary among the main velocity components by factors of \~ 3 and ~ 35, respectively, indicating non-uniform dust depletion. Mn/Fe is super-solar in almost all components, and varies by a factor of ~ 3 among the dominant components. It would be interesting to observe more sub-DLA systems and determine whether they might contribute significantly toward the cosmic budget of metals.

Phosphorus in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

We present FUSE and HST/STIS measurements of the PII column density toward Galactic stars. We analyzed PII through the profile fitting of the unsaturated $λ$1125 and $λ$1533 lines and derived column densities integrated along the sightlines as well as in individual resolved components. We find that phosphorus is not depleted along those sightlines sampling the diffuse neutral gas. We also investigate the correlation existing between PII and OI column densities and find that there is no differential depletion between these two specie. Furthermore, the ratio N(PII)/N(OI) is consistent with the solar P/O value, implying that PII and OI coexist in the same gaseous phase and are likely to evolve in parallel since the time they are produced in stars. We argue that phosphorus, as traced by PII, is an excellent neutral oxygen tracer in various physical environments, except when ionization corrections are a significant issue. Hence, PII lines (observable with FUSE, HST/STIS, or with VLT/UVES for the QSO sightlines) reveal particularly useful as a proxy for OI lines when these are saturated or blended.

Time-resolved FUSE Photometric and Spectroscopic Observations: PG1219+534, PG1605+072, and PG1613+426

We report on the detection of pulsations in the far ultraviolet (hereafter FUV) light curves of PG1219+534, PG1605+072, and PG1613+426 obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) in time-tagged mode (TTAG). Exposures of the order of a few Ksecs were sufficient to observe the main frequencies of PG1219+534 and PG1605+072 and confirm the detection of a pulsation mode at the surface of PG1613+426 as reported from ground. For the first time we derive time-resolved spectroscopic FUSE data of a sdB pulsator (PG1605+072) and comment its line profile variation diagram (hereafter lpv diagram). We observe the phase shift between the maximum luminosity and the maximum radius to be consistent with the model of an adiabatic pulsator. We also present evidence that the line broadening previously reported is not caused by rotation but is rather an observational bias due to the rapid Doppler shift of the lines with 17 km.s-1 amplitude. Thus our observations do not support the previous claim that PG1605+072 is (or will evolve into) an unusually fast rotating degenerate dwarf. These results demonstrate the asteroseismological potential of the FUSE satellite which should be viewed as another powerful means of investigation of stellar pulsations along with the MOST and COROT missions.

Velocity Dispersion of Excited H2

We present a study of the high rotational bands (J > 2) of H2 toward 4 early type galactic stars: HD 73882, HD 192639, HD 206267, and HD 207538. In each case, the velocity dispersion - characterized by the spectrum fitting parameter b - increases with the level of excitation, a phenomenon that has previously been detected by the Copernicus and IMAPS observatories. In particular, we show with 4 sigma confidence that for HD 192639 it is not possible to fit all J levels with a single b value, and that higher b values are needed for the higher levels. The amplitude of the line broadening, which can be as high as 10 km s^-1, makes explanations such as inhomogeneous spatial distribution unlikely. We investigate a mechanism in which the broadening is due to the molecules that are rotationally excited through the excess energy acquired after their formation on a grain (H2-formation pumping). We show that different dispersions would be a natural consequence of this mechanism. We note however that such process would require a formation rate 10 times higher then what was inferred from other observations. In view of the difficulty to account for the velocity dispersion as thermal broadening (T would be around 10,000 K), we conclude then that we are most certainly observing some highly turbulent warm layer associated with the cold diffuse cloud. Embedded in a magnetic field, it could be responsible for the high quantities of CH+ measured in the cold neutral medium.

Asteroseismology of sdB stars with FUSE

The hot subdwarf B (sdB) stars form an homogeneous group populating an extension of the horizontal branch (HB) in the ($T_{\rm eff}$--$\log g$) diagram towards temperatures up to 40,000 K. The recent discovery that many of them are multimode pulsators has triggered a large observational and theoretical effort. We discuss the possibility of performing space-based asteroseismology with {\em FUSE}, and we demonstrate that periodic luminosity variations are already detectable in archival TTAG data of sdB stars. In particular, we report on the {\em FUSE} observation of the pulsator PF 1219+534, which shows the presence of periodic variations at 6.9 mHz and 7.8 mHz, consistent with those reported from ground--based observations.

Deuterated molecular hydrogen in the Galactic ISM. New observations along seven translucent sightlines

We present column density measurements of the HD molecule in the interstellar gas toward 17 Galactic stars. The values for the seven most heavily reddened sightlines, with E(B-V) = 0.38-0.72, are derived from observations with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The other ten values are from a reanalysis of spectra obtained with Copernicus. In all cases, high-resolution ground-based observations of KI and/or the CH molecule were used to constrain the gas velocity structure and to correct for saturation effects. Comparisons of the column densities HD, CH, CN, and KI in these 17 sightlines indicate that HD is most tightly correlated with CH. Stringent lower limits to the interstellar D/H ratio, derived from the HD/2H2 ratio, range from 3.7 10^(-7) to 4.3 10^(-6). Our results also suggest that the HD/H2 ratio increases with the molecular fraction f(H2) and that the interstellar D/H ratio might be obtained from HD by probing clouds with f(H2) = 1. Finally, we note an apparent relationship between the molecular fractions of hydrogen and deuterium.

Type Ia supernova rate at a redshift of ~ 0.1

We present the type Ia rate measurement based on two EROS supernova search campaigns (in 1999 and 2000). Sixteen supernovae identified as type Ia were discovered. The measurement of the detection efficiency, using a Monte Carlo simulation, provides the type Ia supernova explosion rate at a redshift ~ 0.13. The result is $0.125^{+0.044+0.028}_{-0.034-0.028} h_{70}^2$ SNu where 1 SNu = 1 SN / $10^{10} L_{sun}^B$ / century. This value is compatible with the previous EROS measurement (Hardin et al. 2000), done with a much smaller sample, at a similar redshift. Comparison with other values at different redshifts suggests an evolution of the type Ia supernova rate.

Tiny-Scale Molecular Structures in the Magellanic Clouds (Part 1)

We report on the {\small FUSE} detections of the HD and CO molecules {\bf on the lines of sight towards three Large Magellanic stars}: Sk $-$67D05, Sk $-$68D135, and Sk $-$69D246. HD is also detected for the first time {\bf on the lines of sight towards two Small Magellanic Cloud stars}: AV 95 and Sk 159. While the HD and CO abundances are expected to be lower in the Large Magellanic Cloud where molecular fractions are a third of the Galactic value and where the photodissociation flux is up to thousands times larger, we report an average HD/H$_2$ ratio of 1.4$\pm$0.5 ppm and CO/H$_2$ ratio ranging from 0.8 to 2.7 ppm similar to the Galactic ones. We tentatively identify a deuterium reservoir (hereafter D--reservoir) towards the Small Magellanic Cloud, along the light path to AV 95. We derive a D/H ratio ranging from 1. 10$^{-6}$ to 1.1 10$^{-5}$.

Dynamics of the circumstellar gas in the Herbig Ae stars BF Orionis, SV Cephei, WW Vulpeculae and XY Persei

We present high resolution (lambda / Delta_lambda = 49000) echelle spectra of the intermediate mass, pre-main sequence stars BF Ori, SV Cep, WW Wul and XY Per. The spectra cover the range 3800-5900 angstroms and monitor the stars on time scales of months and days. All spectra show a large number of Balmer and metallic lines with variable blueshifted and redshifted absorption features superimposed to the photospheric stellar spectra. Synthetic Kurucz models are used to estimate rotational velocities, effective temperatures and gravities of the stars. The best photospheric models are subtracted from each observed spectrum to determine the variable absorption features due to the circumstellar gas; those features are characterized in terms of their velocity, v, dispersion velocity, Delta v, and residual absorption, R_max. The absorption components detected in each spectrum can be grouped by their similar radial velocities and are interpreted as the signature of the dynamical evolution of gaseous clumps with, in most cases, solar-like chemical composition. This infalling and outflowing gas has similar properties to the circumstellar gas observed in UX Ori, emphasizing the need for detailed theoretical models, probably in the framework of the magnetospheric accretion scenario, to understand the complex environment in Herbig Ae (HAe) stars. WW Vul is unusual because, in addition to infalling and outflowing gas with properties similar to those observed in the other stars, it shows also transient absorption features in metallic lines with no obvious counterparts in the hydrogen lines. This could, in principle, suggest the presence of CS gas clouds with enhanced metallicity around WW Vul. The existence of such a metal-rich gas component, however, needs to be confirmed by further observations and a more quantitative analysis.

Detection of oxygen and carbon in the hydrodynamically escaping atmosphere of the extrasolar planet HD209458b

Four transits of the planet orbiting the star HD209458 were observed with the STIS spectrograph on board HST. The wavelength domain (1180-1710A) includes HI as well as CI, CII, CIV, NV, OI, SI, SiII, SiIII and SiIV lines. During the transits, absorptions are detected in HI, OI and CII (5+/-2%, 13+/-4.5% and 7.5+/-3.5%, respectively). No absorptions are detected for other lines. The 5% mean absorption over the whole HI Lyman alpha line is consistent with the previous detection at higher resolution (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2003). The absorption depths in OI and CII show that oxygen and carbon are present in the extended upper atmosphere of HD209458b. These species must be carried out up to the Roche lobe and beyond, most likely in a state of hydrodynamic escape.

The data analysis of HD209458 Ly-alpha transit occultation

Using STIS - HST observations, we have detected an extended upper atmosphere in the extrasolar planet HD209458b . The spectra show an absorption of (15+/-4)% of the stellar Ly-alpha emission line during the planetary transit in front of the star. This is interpreted as the signature of HI evaporation taking place around the planet within an extended upper atmosphere (Vidal-Madjar et al. 2003). We present the data analysis of these observations. A particular attention is paid to the background correction and the airglow subtraction.

Evaporation rate of hot Jupiters and formation of Chthonian planets

Among the hundred of known extrasolar planets, about 15% are closer than 0.1 AU from their parent stars. But there are extremely few detections of planets orbiting in less than 3 days. At this limit the planet HD209458b has been found to have an extended upper atmosphere of escaping hydrogen. This suggests that the so-called hot Jupiters which are close to their parent stars could evaporate. Here we estimate the evaporation rate of hydrogen from extrasolar planets in the star vicinity. With high exospheric temperatures, and owing to the tidal forces, planets evaporate through a geometrical blow-off. This may explain the absence of Jupiter mass planets below a critical distance from the stars. Below this critical distance, we infer the existence of a new class of planets made of the residual central core of former hot Jupiters, which we propose to call the ``Chthonian'' planets.

The Deuterium-to-Hydrogen Ratio in a Low-Metallicity Cloud Falling onto the Milky Way

Using Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer and Hubble Space Telescope observations of the QSO PG1259+593, we detect D I Lyman-series absorption in high velocity cloud Complex C, a low-metallicity gas cloud falling onto the Milky Way. This is the first detection of atomic deuterium in the local universe in a location other than the nearby regions of the Galactic disk. A new Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) interferometer map of the H I 21 cm emission toward PG1259+593 indicates that the sight line passes through a compact concentration of neutral gas in Complex C. We find D/H = (2.2+/-0.7)x10^-5, O/H = (8.0+/-2.5)x10^-5, and D/O = 0.28+/-0.12. The metallicity of Complex C gas toward PG1259+593 is approximately 1/6 solar, as inferred from the oxygen abundance [O/H] = -0.79 (+0.12, -0.16). While we cannot rule out a value of D/H similar to that found for the local ISM, we can confidently exclude values as low as those determined recently for extended sight lines in the Galactic disk. Combined with the sub-solar metallicity estimate and the low nitrogen abundance, this conclusion lends support to the hypothesis that Complex C is located outside the Milky Way, rather than inside in material recirculated between the Galactic disk and halo. The value of D/H for Complex C is consistent with the primordial abundance of deuterium inferred from recent Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe observations of the cosmic microwave background and simple chemical evolution models that predict the amount of deuterium astration as a function of metallicity. FUSE observations of the HI interstellar gas of IZw18

We present the analysis of FUSE observations of the metal-deficient dwarf galaxy IZw18. We measured column densities of HI, NI, OI, ArI, SiII, and FeII. The OI/HI ratio (log(OI/HI)=-4.7^{+0.8}_{-0.6}) is consistent with the O/H ratio observed in the HII regions (all uncertainties are 2-sigma). If the oxygen is depleted in the HI region compared to the HII regions, the depletion is at most 0.5dex. This is also consistent with the log(O/H) ratios ~-5 measured with FUSE in the HI regions of other blue compact dwarf galaxies. With log(NI/OI)=-2.4^{+0.6}_{-0.8}, the measured NI/OI ratio is lower than expected for primary nitrogen. The determination of the NII column density is needed to discriminate between a large ionization of NI or a possible nitrogen deficiency. The neutral argon is also apparently underabundant, indicating that ionization into ArII is likely important. The column densities of the other alpha-chain elements SiII and ArI favor the lower edge of the permitted range of OI column density, log(N(OI))~16.3.

Oxygen Gas Phase Abundance Revisited

We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O {\small I} column densities from {\it HST}/STIS observations of the weak 1355 Åintersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] using {\it HST}/STIS observations of \lya and {\it FUSE} observations of molecular hydrogen. The molecular hydrogen content of these sight lines ranges from f(H$_2$) = 2N(H$_2$)/[N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] = 0.03 to 0.47. The average $ $ of 6.3$\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ mag$^{-1}$ with a standard deviation of 15% is consistent with previous surveys. The mean oxygen abundance along these sight lines, which probe a wide range of galactic environments in the distant ISM, is 10$^6$ \oh = $408 \pm 13$ (1 $σ$ in the mean). %$({\rm O/H})_{gas} = 408 \pm 14$(1 $σ$). We see no evidence for decreasing gas-phase oxygen abundance with increasing molecular hydrogen fraction and the relative constancy of \oh suggests that the component of dust containing the oxygen is not readily destroyed. We estimate that, if 60% of the dust grains are resilient against destruction by shocks, the distant interstellar total oxygen abundance can be reconciliated with the solar value derived from the most recent measurements %by Holweger and by Allende Prieto, Lambert & Asplund: of 10$^6$ \oh$_\odot$ = 517 $\pm$ 58 (1 $σ$). We note that the smaller oxygen abundances derived for the interstellar gas within 500 pc %by Meyer, Cardelli & Jura or from nearby B star surveys are consistent with a local elemental deficit.

The surprising Far-UV spectrum of the polar BY Camelopardalis

We report on the first far-UV observations of the asynchronous polar BY Cam made by the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). The source is known to exhibit the most extreme NV/CIV emission resonance line ratio observed among polars. The FUSE observations reveal a OVI resonance line weaker than in the prototype of polars, AM Her, with the absence of a detectable narrow component. The OVI broad line is detected with an equivalent width of the same order as in AM Her, the blueward doublet component is clearly present but the redward component is strongly affected by H2 absorption. The presence of a strong NIII line and weak CIII lines also confirms the peculiar CNO line flux. We compare the resonance CNO line intensities with the predictions of the CLOUDY plasma code coupled to a geometrical model of the accretion column. Varying the temperature and/or intensity of the ionising spectrum is unable to reproduce the observed broad line ratios. A solution is obtained by significantly altering the element abundances with a strong depletion of C, overabundance of N and a weak underabundance of O. This confirms previous suggestions of non-solar abundances which may result from redistribution in the accreted material following nova outbursts and/or the secondary nuclear evolution. A very significant H2 absorption is observed in front of the source, a possible indication for either the existence of a dense interstellar cloud or of circumstellar material.
