A new look at the theory of point interactions

We investigate the entire family of multi-center point interaction Hamiltonians. We show that a large sub-family of these operators do not become either singular or trivial when the positions of two or more scattering centers tend to coincide. In this sense, they appear to be renormalised by default as opposed to the "local" point interaction Hamiltonians usually considered in the literature as the ones of physical interest. In the two-center case we study the behaviour of the negative eigenvalues as a function of the center distance. The result is used to analyze a formal Born-Oppenheimer approximation of a three-particle system with two heavy and one light particle. We show that this simplified model does not show any ultra-violet catastrophe and we prove that the ratio of successive low energy eigenvalues follows the Efimov geometrical law.

Solvable models of quantum beating

We review some results about the suppression of quantum beating in a one dimensional nonlinear double well potential. We implement a single particle double well potential model, making use of nonlinear point interactions. We show that there is complete suppression of the typical beating phenomenon characterizing the linear quantum case.

Two-dimensional Time-dependent Point Interactions

We study the time-evolution of a quantum particle subjected to time-dependent zero-range forces in two dimensions. After establishing a conceivable ansatz for the solution to the Schrödinger equation, we prove that the wave packet time-evolution is completely specified by the solutions of a system of Volterra-type equations -- the {\it charge equations} -- involving the coefficients of the singular part of the wave function, thus extending to the two-dimensional case known results in one and three dimensions.

A model of a quantum particle in a quantum environment: a numerical study

We define and investigate, via numerical analysis, a one dimensional toy-model of a cloud chamber. An energetic quantum particle, whose initial state is a superposition of two identical wave packets with opposite average momentum, interacts during its evolution and exchanges (small amounts of) energy with an array of localized spins. Triggered by the interaction with the environment, the initial superposition state turns into an incoherent sum of two states describing the following situation: or the particle is going to the left and a large number of spins on the left side changed their states, or the same is happening on the right side. This evolution is reminiscent of what happens in a cloud chamber where a quantum particle, emitted as a spherical wave by a radioactive source, marks its passage inside a supersaturated vapour-chamber in the form of a sequence of small liquid bubbles arranging themselves around a possible classical trajectory of the particle.

A time-dependent perturbative analysis for a quantum particle in a cloud chamber

We consider a simple model of a cloud chamber consisting of a test particle (the alpha-particle) interacting with two other particles (the atoms of the vapour) subject to attractive potentials centered in $a_1, a_2 \in \mathbb{R}^3$. At time zero the alpha-particle is described by an outgoing spherical wave centered in the origin and the atoms are in their ground state. We show that, under suitable assumptions on the physical parameters of the system and up to second order in perturbation theory, the probability that both atoms are ionized is negligible unless $a_2$ lies on the line joining the origin with $a_1$. The work is a fully time-dependent version of the original analysis proposed by Mott in 1929.

Point Interaction Hamiltonians in Bounded Domains

Making use of recent techniques in the theory of selfadjoint extensions of symmetric operators, we characterize the class of point interaction Hamiltonians in a 3-D bounded domain with regular boundary. In the particular case of one point interaction acting in the center of a ball, we obtain an explicit representation of the point spectrum of the operator togheter with the corresponding related eigenfunctions. These operators are used to build up a model-system where the dynamics of a quantum particle depends on the state of a quantum bit.

Point interactions in acoustics: one dimensional models

A one dimensional system made up of a compressible fluid and several mechanical oscillators, coupled to the acoustic field in the fluid, is analyzed for different settings of the oscillators array. The dynamical models are formulated in terms of singular perturbations of the decoupled dynamics of the acoustic field and the mechanical oscillators. Detailed spectral properties of the generators of the dynamics are given for each model we consider. In the case of a periodic array of mechanical oscillators it is shown that the energy spectrum presents a band structure.

Ionization for Three Dimensional Time-dependent Point Interactions

We study the time evolution of a three dimensional quantum particle under the action of a time-dependent point interaction fixed at the origin. We assume that the ``strength'' of the interaction (α(t)) is a periodic function with an arbitrary mean. Under very weak conditions on the Fourier coefficients of (α(t)), we prove that there is complete ionization as (t \to \infty), starting from a bound state at time (t = 0). Moreover we prove also that, under the same conditions, all the states of the system are scattering states.

Decoherence in a Two-Particle Model

We consider a simple one dimensional quantum system consisting of a heavy and a light particle interacting via a point interaction. The initial state is chosen to be a product state, with the heavy particle described by a coherent superposition of two spatially separated wave packets with opposite momentum and the light particle localized in the region between the two wave packets. We characterize the asymptotic dynamics of the system in the limit of small mass ratio, with an explicit control of the error. We derive the corresponding reduced density matrix for the heavy particle and explicitly compute the (partial) decoherence effect for the heavy particle induced by the presence of the light one for a particular set up of the parameters.

Schrodinger Equation with Moving Point Interactions in Three Dimensions

We consider the motion of a non relativistic quantum particle in R^3 subject to n point interactions which are moving on given smooth trajectories. Due to the singular character of the time-dependent interaction, the corresponding Schrodinger equation does not have solutions in a strong sense and, moreover, standard perturbation techniques cannot be used. Here we prove that, for smooth initial data, there is a unique weak solution by reducing the problem to the solution of a Volterra integral equation involving only the time variable. It is also shown that the evolution operator uniquely extends to a unitary operator in $L^{2}(R^{3})$.
