Origin of the Mott Gap

We show exactly that the only charged excitations that exist in the strong-coupling limit of the half-filled Hubbard model are gapped composite excitations generated by the dynamics of the charge $2e$ boson that appears upon explicit integration of the high-energy scale. At every momentum, such excitations have non-zero spectral weight at two distinct energy scales separated by the on-site repulsion $U$. The result is a gap in the spectrum for the composite excitations accompanied by a discontinuous vanishing of the density of states at the chemical potential when $U$ exceeds the bandwidth. Consequently, we resolve the long-standing problem of the cause of the charge gap in a half-filled band in the absence of symmetry breaking.

On The Spectrum of Yang-Mills Theory in 2+1 Dimensions, Analytically

We review our recent work on the glueball spectrum of pure Yang-Mills theory in 2+1 dimensions. The calculations make use of Karabali-Nair corner variables in the Hamiltonian formalism, and involve a determination of the leading form of the ground-state wavefunctional.

Holography of the N=1 Higher-Spin Theory on AdS4

We argue that the N=1 higher-spin theory on AdS4 is holographically dual to the N=1 supersymmetric critical O(N) vector model in three dimensions. This appears to be a special form of the AdS/CFT correspondence in which both regular and irregular bulk modes have similar roles and their interplay leads simultaneously to both the free and the interacting phases of the boundary theory. We study various boundary conditions that correspond to boundary deformations connecting, for large-N, the free and interacting boundary theories. We point out the importance of parity in this holography and elucidate the Higgs mechanism responsible for the breaking of higher-spin symmetry for subleading N.

Branes at Angles and Black Holes

We construct the most general supersymmetric configuration of D2-branes and D6-branes on a 6-torus. It contains arbitrary numbers of branes at relative U(3) angles. The corresponding supergravity solutions are constructed and expressed in a remarkably simple form, using the complex geometry of the compact space. The spacetime supersymmetry of the configuration is verified explicitly, by solution of the Killing spinor equations. Our configurations can be interpreted as a 16-parameter family of regular extremal black holes in four dimensions. Their entropy is interpreted microscopically by counting the degeneracy of bound states of D-branes. Our result agrees in detail with the prediction for the degeneracy of BPS states in terms of the quartic invariant of the E(7,7) duality group.

A D=4 N=1 Orbifold of Type I Strings

We consider the propagation of Type I open superstrings on orbifolds with four non-compact dimensions and $N=1$ supersymmetry. In this paper, we concentrate on a non-trivial Z_2xZ_2 example. We show that consistency conditions, arising from tadpole cancellation and algebraic sources, require the existence of three sets of Dirichlet 5-branes. We discuss fully the enhancements of the spectrum when these 5-branes intersect. An amusing attribute of these models is the importance of the tree-level (in Type I language) superpotential to the consistent relationship between Higgsing and the motions of 5-branes.

Anomalies, D-flatness and Small Instantons

Recently, Witten has proposed a mechanism for symmetry enhancement in $SO(32)$ heterotic string theory, where the singularity obtained by shrinking an instanton to zero size is resolved by the appearance of an $Sp(1)$ gauge symmetry. In this short letter, we consider spacetime constraints from anomaly cancellation in six dimensions and D-flatness and demonstrate a subtlety which arises in the moduli space when many instantons are shrunk to zero size.

New Examples of Duality in Chiral and Non-Chiral Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We present evidence for renormalization group fixed points with dual magnetic descriptions in fourteen new classes of four-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric models. Nine of these classes are chiral and many involve two or three gauge groups. These theories are generalizations of models presented earlier by Seiberg, by Kutasov and Schwimmer, and by the present authors. The different classes are interrelated; one can flow from one class to another using confinement or symmetry breaking.

Duality of Sp(2N) and SO(N) Supersymmetric Gauge Theories with Adjoint Matter

We discuss electric-magnetic duality in two new classes of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. The models have gauge group $Sp(2\nc)$ or $SO(\nc)$ with matter in both the adjoint and defining representations. By perturbing these theories with various superpotentials, we find a variety of new infrared fixed points with dual descriptions. This work is complementary to that of Kutasov and Schwimmer on $SU(\nc)$ and of Intriligator on other models involving $Sp(2\nc)$ and $SO(\nc)$.

Exact Superpotentials in Four Dimensions

Supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions can display interesting non-perturbative phenomena. Although the superpotential dynamically generated by these phenomena can be highly nontrivial, it can often be exactly determined. We discuss some general techniques for analyzing the Wilsonian superpotential and demonstrate them with simple but non-trivial examples.

The Strong CP Problem, String Theory and the Nelson-Barr Mechanism

We review recent work on the strong CP problem in the context of realistic string-inspired models. We discuss the various solutions, review the conjecture that CP is generally a gauged discrete symmetry in string theory and then consider models of the Nelson-Barr type. We note that squark non-degeneracy spoils the Nelson-Barr structure at the one loop level. We stress that string theory expectations, as well as naturalness arguments, make it very difficult to avoid the constraints on non-degeneracy.

Supersymmetry and the Nelson-Barr Mechanism

One possible solution to the strong CP problem is that CP is an exact symmetry, spontaneously broken at some scale. Some years ago, Nelson and Barr suggested a mechanism for obtaining $θ=0$ at tree level in this framework, and showed that radiative corrections were small in some non-supersymmetric models. Further investigations suggested that the same could be true in supersymmetric theories. In this note, we show that these analyses assumed an extraordinarily high degree of degeneracy among squark masses and among other supersymmetry breaking parameters. We argue, using naturalness as well as expectations from string theory, that this is not very plausible.

Flavor Symmetries and The Problem of Squark Degeneracy

If supersymmetry exists at low energies, it is necessary to understand why the squark spectrum exhibits sufficient degeneracy to suppress flavor changing neutral currents. In this note, we point out that gauged horizontal symmetries can yield realistic quark mass matrices, while at the same time giving just barely enough squark degeneracy to account for neutral $K$-meson phenomenology. This approach suggests likely patterns for squark masses, and indicates that there could be significant supersymmetric contributions to $B-\bar{B}$ and $D-\bar{D}$ mixing and CP violation in the $K$ and $B$ systems.

Hydrodynamic Stability Analysis of Burning Bubbles in Electroweak Theory and in QCD

Assuming that the electroweak and QCD phase transitions are first order, upon supercooling, bubbles of the new phase appear. These bubbles grow to macroscopic sizes compared to the natural scales associated with the Compton wavelengths of particle excitations. They propagate by burning the old phase into the new phase at the surface of the bubble. We study the hydrodynamic stability of the burning and find that for the velocities of interest for cosmology in the electroweak phase transition, the shape of the bubble wall is stable under hydrodynamic perturbations. Bubbles formed in the cosmological QCD phase transition are found to be a borderline case between stability and instability.

Infrared Effects and Bubble Propagation at the Electroweak Phase Transition

We discuss aspects of poor infrared behaviour of the perturbation expansion for the effective potential of the Higgs mode near the electroweak phase transition, and enlarge on the discovery that higher order effects weaken the transition. In addition, we outline our recent attempts at understanding the dynamics involved in the propagation of bubbles formed in the first order transition.

Of CP and other Gauge Symmetries in String Theory

We argue that \CP is a gauge symmetry in string theory. As a consequence, \CP cannot be explicitly broken either perturbatively or non-pertubatively; there can be no non-perturbative \CP-violating parameters. String theory is thus an example of a theory where all $θ$ angles arise due to spontaneous \CP violation, and are in principle calculable.

Comments on the Electroweak Phase Transition

We report on an investigation of various problems related to the theory of the electroweak phase transition. This includes a determination of the nature of the phase transition, a discussion of the possible role of higher order radiative corrections and the theory of the formation and evolution of the bubbles of the new phase. We find in particular that no dangerous linear terms appear in the effective potential. However, the strength of the first order phase transition is 2/3 times less than what follows from the one-loop approximation. This rules out baryogenesis in the minimal version of the electroweak theory.
