Coexistence of spontaneous dimerization and magnetic order in a transverse-field Ising ladder with four-spin interactions

The spin-1/2 transverse field two-leg Ising ladder with nearest-neighbor exchange and plaquette four-spin interaction $J_{4}$ is studied analytically and numerically with the density matrix renormalization group approach. The quantum phase diagram in the transverse field $B$ versus $J_{4}$ plane has been obtained. There are three different phases: a paramagnetic (PM) phase for high values of the transverse field and, for low values of $B$, a ferromagnetic (FM) ordered phase for small $J_{4}$ and a dimerized-rung (DR) phase for large negative values of $J_{4}$. All phases are separated by quantum phase transition lines meeting at a multicritical point. The critical lines have been obtained by exploring the entanglement entropy. The results show that along the critical lines the central charge is $c=1/2$, while at the multicritical point one has $c=1$. The scaling dimension of the energy operator is $X_ε=1$, in agreement with the universality class of the critical behavior of the quantum Ising chain. An effective field theory for the multicritical point is also discussed. The FM and the DR order parameters have also been computed and we found a region where the FM and the DR phases coexist.

Quench dynamics and relaxation of a spin coupled to interacting leads

We study a quantum quench in which a magnetic impurity is suddenly coupled to Hubbard chains, whose low-energy physics is described by Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory. Using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group (tDMRG) technique, we analyze the propagation of charge, spin and entanglement in the chains after the quench and relate the light-cone velocities to the dispersion of holons and spinons. We find that the local magnetization at the impurity site decays faster if we increase the interaction in the chains, even though the spin velocity decreases. We derive an analytical expression for the relaxation of the impurity magnetization which is in good agreement with the tDMRG results at intermediate timescales, providing valuable insight into the time evolution of the Kondo screening cloud in interacting systems.

SU(4) Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with exchange-frustrated perturbations: implications for twistronics and Mott insulators

The SU(4)-symmetric spin-orbital model on the honeycomb lattice was recently studied in connection to correlated insulators such as the $e_{g}$ Mott insulator Ba$_{3}$CuSb$_{2}$O$_{9}$ and the insulating phase of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene at quarter filling. Here we provide a unified discussion of these systems by investigating an extended model that includes the effects of Hund's coupling and anisotropic, orbital-dependent exchange interactions. Using a combination of mean-field theory, linear flavor-wave theory, and variational Monte Carlo, we show that this model harbors a quantum spin-orbital liquid over a wide parameter regime around the SU(4)-symmetric point. For large Hund's coupling, a ferromagnetic antiferro-orbital ordered state appears, while a valence-bond crystal combined with a vortex orbital state is stabilized by dominant orbital-dependent exchange interactions.

Chiral Y junction of quantum spin chains

We study a Y junction of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with an interaction that breaks both time-reversal and chain exchange symmetries, but not their product nor SU(2) symmetry. The boundary phase diagram features a stable disconnected fixed point at weak coupling and a stable three-channel Kondo fixed point at strong coupling, separated by an unstable chiral fixed point at intermediate coupling. Using non-abelian bosonization and boundary conformal field theory, together with density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we characterize the signatures of these low-energy fixed points. In particular, we address the boundary entropy, the spin conductance and the temperature dependence of the scalar spin chirality and the magnetic susceptibility at the boundary.

Edge magnetization and spin transport in an SU(2)-symmetric Kitaev spin liquid

We investigate the edge magnetism and the spin transport properties of an SU(2)-symmetric Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) model put forward by Yao and Lee [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{107}, 087205 (2011)] on the honeycomb lattice. In this model, the spin degrees of freedom fractionalize into a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ static gauge field and three species of either gapless (Dirac) or gapped (chiral) Majorana fermionic excitations. We find that, when a magnetic field is applied to a zigzag edge, the Dirac KSL exhibits a nonlocal magnetization associated with the existence of zero-energy edge modes. The application of a spin bias $V=μ_{\uparrow}-μ_{\downarrow}$ at the interface of the spin system with a normal metal produces a spin current into the KSL, which depends, in the zero-temperature limit, as a power-law on $V$ for both Dirac and chiral KSLs, but with different exponents. Lastly, we study the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect, in which a spin current is driven by the combined action of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the honeycomb lattice and a thermal gradient at the interface of the KSL with a metal. Our results suggest that edge magnetization and spin transport can be used to probe the existence of charge-neutral edge states in quantum spin liquids.

Quantum spin circulator in Y junctions of Heisenberg chains

We show that a quantum spin circulator, a nonreciprocal device that routes spin currents without any charge transport, can be achieved in Y junctions of identical spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chains coupled by a chiral three-spin interaction. Using bosonization, boundary conformal field theory, and density-matrix renormalization group simulations, we find that a chiral fixed point with maximally asymmetric spin conductance arises at a critical point separating a regime of disconnected chains from a spin-only version of the three-channel Kondo effect. We argue that networks of spin-chain Y junctions provide a controllable approach to construct long-sought chiral spin liquid phases.

Spinon and bound state excitation "light cones" in Heisenberg XXZ Chains

We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics after a local quench that connects two spin-1/2 XXZ chains prepared in the ground state of the Hamiltonian in different phases, one in the ferromagnetic phase and the other in the critical phase. We analyze the time evolution of the on-site magnetization and bipartite entanglement entropy via adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. In systems with short-range inter- actions, such as the one we consider, the velocity of information transfer is expected to be bounded, giving rise to a light-cone effect. Interestingly, our results show that, when the anisotropy parameter of the critical chain is sufficiently close to that of the isotropic ferromagnet, the light cone is determined by the velocity of spin-wave bound states that propagate faster than single-particle ("spinon") excitations. Furthermore, we investigate how the system approaches equilibrium in the inhomogeneous ground state of the connected system, in which the ferromagnetic chain induces a nonzero magnetization in the critical chain in the vicinity of the interface.

Tunable breakdown of the polaron picture for mobile impurities in a topological semimetal

Mobile impurities in cold atomic gases constitute a new platform for investigating polaron physics. Here we show that when impurity atoms interact with a two-dimensional Fermi gas with quadratic band touching the polaron picture may either hold or break down depending on the particle-hole asymmetry of the band structure. If the hole band has a smaller effective mass than the particle band, the quasiparticle is stable and its diffusion coefficient varies with temperature as $D(T) \propto \ln^2 T$. If the hole band has larger mass, the quasiparticle weight vanishes at low energies due to an emergent orthogonality catastrophe. In this case we map the problem onto a set of one-dimensional channels and use conformal field theory techniques to obtain $D(T)\propto T^ν$ with an interaction-dependent exponent $ν$. The different regimes can be detected in the nonequilibrium expansion dynamics of an initially confined impurity.

Chiral spin-orbital liquids with nodal lines

Strongly correlated materials with strong spin-orbit coupling hold promise for realizing topological phases with fractionalized excitations. Here we propose a chiral spin-orbital liquid as a stable phase of a realistic model for heavy-element double perovskites. This spin liquid state has Majorana fermion excitations with a gapless spectrum characterized by nodal lines along the edges of the Brillouin zone. We show that the nodal lines are topological defects of a non-Abelian Berry connection and that the system exhibits dispersing surface states. We discuss some experimental signatures of this state and compare them with properties of the spin liquid candidate Ba_2YMoO_6.

Boundary versus bulk behavior of time-dependent correlation functions in one-dimensional quantum systems

We study the influence of reflective boundaries on time-dependent responses of one-dimensional quantum fluids at zero temperature beyond the low-energy approximation. Our analysis is based on an extension of effective mobile impurity models for nonlinear Luttinger liquids to the case of open boundary conditions. For integrable models, we show that boundary autocorrelations oscillate as a function of time with the same frequency as the corresponding bulk autocorrelations. This frequency can be identified as the band edge of elementary excitations. The amplitude of the oscillations decays as a power law with distinct exponents at the boundary and in the bulk, but boundary and bulk exponents are determined by the same coupling constant in the mobile impurity model. For nonintegrable models, we argue that the power-law decay of the oscillations is generic for autocorrelations in the bulk, but turns into an exponential decay at the boundary. Moreover, there is in general a nonuniversal shift of the boundary frequency in comparison with the band edge of bulk excitations. The predictions of our effective field theory are compared with numerical results obtained by time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) for both integrable and nonintegrable critical spin-$S$ chains with $S=1/2$, $1$ and $3/2$.

Spin-charge separated quasiparticles in one dimensional quantum fluids

We revisit the problem of dynamical response in spin-charge separated one dimensional quantum fluids. In the framework of Luttinger liquid theory, the dynamical response is formulated in terms of noninteracting bosonic collective excitations carrying either charge or spin. We argue that, as a result of spectral nonlinearity, long-lived excitations are best understood in terms of generally strongly interacting fermionic holons and spinons. This has far reaching ramifications for the construction of mobile impurity models used to determine threshold singularities in response functions. We formulate and solve the appropriate mobile impurity model describing the spinon threshold in the single-particle Green's function. Our formulation further raises the question whether it is possible to realize a model of noninteracting fermionic holons and spinons in microscopic lattice models of interacting spinful fermions. We investigate this issue in some detail by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) computations.

Mobile Impurities and Orthogonality Catastrophe in two-dimensional Vortex Lattices

We investigate the properties of a neutral impurity atom coupled with the Tkachenko modes of a two-dimensional vortex lattice Bose-Einstein condensate. In contrast with polarons in homogeneous condensates, the marginal impurity-boson interaction in the vortex lattice leads to infrared singularities in perturbation theory and to the breakdown of the quasiparticle picture in the low energy limit. These infrared singularities are interpreted in terms of a renormalization of the coupling constant, quasiparticle weight and effective impurity mass. The divergence of the effective mass in the low energy limit gives rise to an orthogonality catastrophe which is manifested as a power law singularity in the impurity spectral function.

Low temperature dynamics of nonlinear Luttinger liquids

We generalize nonlinear Luttinger liquid theory to describe the dynamics of one-dimensional quantum critical systems at low temperatures. Analyzing density-matrix renormalization group results for the spin autocorrelation function in the XXZ chain we provide, in particular, direct evidence for spin diffusion in sharp contrast to the exponential decay in time predicted by conventional Luttinger liquid theory. Furthermore, we discuss how the frequencies and exponents of the oscillatory contributions from the band edges are renormalized by irrelevant interactions and obtain excellent agreement between our finite temperature nonlinear Luttinger liquid theory and the numerical data.

Exactly conserved quasilocal operators for the XXZ spin chain

We extend T. Prosen's construction of quasilocal conserved quantities for the XXZ model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 217206 (2011)] to the case of periodic boundary conditions. These quasilocal operators stem from a two-parameter transfer matrix which employs a highest-weight representation of the quantum group algebra inherent in the Yang-Baxter algebra. In contrast with the open chain, where the conservation law is weakly violated by boundary terms, the quasilocal operators in the periodic chain exactly commute with the Hamiltonian and other local conserved quantities.

Non universality of entanglement convertibility

Recently, it has been suggested that operational properties connected to quantum computation can be alternative indicators of quantum phase transitions. In this work we systematically study these operational properties in 1D systems that present phase transitions of different orders. For this purpose, we evaluate the local convertibility between bipartite ground states. Our results suggest that the operational properties, related to non-analyticities of the entanglement spectrum, are good detectors of explicit symmetries of the model, but not necessarily of phase transitions. We also show that thermodynamically equivalent phases, such as Luttinger liquids, may display different convertibility properties depending on the underlying microscopic model.

Tkachenko polarons in vortex lattices

We analyze the properties of impurities immersed in a vortex lattice formed by ultracold bosons in the mean field quantum Hall regime. In addition to the effects of a periodic lattice potential, the impurity is dressed by collective modes with parabolic dispersion (Tkachenko modes). We derive the effective polaron model, which contains a marginal impurity-phonon interaction. The polaron spectral function exhibits a Lorentzian broadening for arbitrarily small wave vectors even at zero temperature, in contrast with the result for optical or acoustic phonons. The anomalous damping of Tkachenko polarons could be detected experimentally using momentum-resolved spectroscopy.

Charge dynamics in half-filled Hubbard chains with finite on-site interaction

We study the charge dynamic structure factor of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with finite on-site repulsion U at half filling. Numerical results from the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group are analyzed by comparison with the exact spectrum of the model. The evolution of the line shape as a function of U is explained in terms of a relative transfer of spectral weight between the two-holon continuum that dominates in the limit U\to \infty and a subset of the two-holon-two-spinon continuum that reconstructs the electron-hole continuum in the limit U\to 0. Power-law singularities along boundary lines of the spectrum are described by effective impurity models that are explicitly invariant under spin and η-spin SU(2) rotations. The Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition is reflected in a discontinuous change of the exponents of edge singularities at U=0. The sharp feature observed in the spectrum for momenta near the zone boundary is attributed to a Van Hove singularity that persists as a consequence of integrability.

Orbital multicriticality in spin gapped quasi-1D antiferromagnets

Motivated by the quasi-1D antiferromagnet CaV$_2$O$_4$, we explore spin-orbital systems in which the spin modes are gapped but orbitals are near a macroscopically degenerate classical transition. Within a simplified model we show that gapless orbital liquid phases possessing power-law correlations may occur without the strict condition of a continuous orbital symmetry. For the model proposed for CaV$_2$O$_4$, we find that an orbital phase with coexisting order parameters emerges from a multicritical point. The effective orbital model consists of zigzag-coupled transverse field Ising chains. The corresponding global phase diagram is constructed using field theory methods and analyzed near the multicritical point with the aid of an exact solution of a zigzag XXZ model.
