Production of phi Mesons in Au+Au Collisions at 11.7 A GeV/c

We report on a measurement of phi-meson production in Au+Au collisions at a beam momentum of 11.7 A GeV/c by Experiment E917 at the AGS. The measurement covers the midrapidity region 1.2 < y < 1.6. Transverse-mass spectra and the rapidity distribution are presented as functions of centrality characterized by the number of participant projectile nucleons. The yield of phi's per participant projectile nucleon increases strongly in central collisions in a manner similar to that observed for kaons.

Baryon Rapidity Loss in Relativistic Au+Au Collisions

An excitation function of proton rapidity distributions for different centralities is reported from AGS Experiment E917 for Au+Au collisions at 6, 8, and 10.8 GeV/nucleon. The rapidity distributions from peripheral collisions have a valley at midrapidity which smoothly change to distributions that peak at midrapidity for central collisions. The mean rapidity loss increases with increasing beam energy, whereas the fraction of protons consistent with isotropic emission from a thermal source at midrapidity decreases with increasing beam energy.

Antilambda production in Au+Au collisions at 11.7 A GeV/c

We present results from Experiment E917 for antilambda and antiproton production in Au+Au collisions at 11.7 A GeV. We have measured invariant spectra and yields for both species in central and peripheral collisions. We find that the antilambda/antiproton ratio near mid-rapidity increases from 0.26+0.19-0.15 in peripheral collisions to 3.6+4.7-1.8 in central collisions, a value that is substantially larger than current theoretical estimates.

Systematic Study of Hadronic Observables in Nucleus Nucleus Collisions at CERN SPS

The possible transition of nuclear matter to a deconfined phase in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is explored by a systematic variation of the collision system by means of system size, beam energy and centrality of the collision all measured within the same experiment NA49 at the CERN SPS. The investigation takes advantage of the large number of hadronic observables covered over a wide phase space by the acceptance of the NA49 TPCs.

A systematic study of two particle correlations from NA49 at CERN SPS

A systematic study of two particle correlations measured by the NA49 experiment is summarized. Radii from Bose Einstein interferometry have been determined separately in different parts of phase space, for different collision systems and at different incident beam energies. Moreover, first results of a new method of accessing space-time asymmetries in the emission of particles by means of non identical particle correlations are presented.

HBT correlation in 158 AGeV Pb+Pb collisions

The large acceptance TPCs of the NA49 spectrometer allow for a systematic multidimensional study of two-particle correlations in different part of phase space. Results from Bertsch-Pratt and Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii parametrizations are presented differentially in transverse pair momentum and pair rapidity. These studies give an insight into the dynamical space-time evolution of relativistic Pb+Pb collisions, which is dominated by longitudinal expansion.

Strangeness production in high density baryon matter

Strangeness production in heavy-ion collisions, when compared to proton proton collisions, is potentially a sensitive probe for collective energy deposition and therefore for reaction mechanisms in general. It may therefore provide insight into possible QGP formation in dense nuclear matter. To establish an understanding of the observed yields, a systematic study of high density baryon matter at different beam energies is essential. This might also reveal possible discontinuities in the energy dependence of the reaction mechanism. We present preliminary results for kaon production in Au+Au collisions at beam kinetic energies of 6, 8, and 10.7 GeV/u obtained by the E917 experiment at the AGS (BNL). These measurements complement those carried out by the E866 collaboration at 2, 4, and 10.7 GeV/u with a significantly enlarged data sample. In both experiments a large range of rapidities was covered by taking data at different angular settings of the magnetic spectrometer.
