The pre-main sequence star HD 34282: A very short period delta Scuti-type pulsator

HD 34282 has been found to pulsate during a systematic search for short-term photometric variability in Herbig Ae/Be stars with the goal of determining the position and size of the pre-main sequence instability strip. Simultaneous Stromgren photometry is used in the frequency analysis, yielding two frequencies with values of nu1=79.5 and nu2=71.3 c/d. The light curve with the largest amplitude is that of the u band. This behaviour, which is not common for delta Scuti stars, is explained as pulsation in a high radial order in stars near the blue edge of the instability strip. The main period, with a value of 18.12 min, represents the shortest period observed so far for a delta Scuti-type pulsator. A seismic modelling, including instability predictions and rotation effects, has been attempted. It is found that both main sequence and pre-main sequence models predict modes in the range of 56 to 82 c/d (between 648 and 949 microHz), corresponding to oscillations of radial order n from 6 to 8. The highest of the observed frequencies only becomes unstable for models of low metallicity, in agreement with results from spectroscopic measurements.

The Delta Scuti star FG Vir. V. The 2002 photometric multisite campaign

A high-accuracy multisite campaign was carried out from 2002 January to May with a photometric coverage of 398 hours at five observatories. The concentration on a few selected sites gives better consistency and accuracy than collecting smaller amounts from a larger number of sites. 23 frequencies were detected with a high statistical significance. 6 of these are new. The 17 frequencies found in common with the 1992-1995 data are the modes with highest amplitudes. This indicates that the pulsation spectrum of FG Vir is relatively stable over the ten-year period. Two frequencies have variable amplitudes and phases from year to year as well as during 2002. These were both found to be double modes with close frequencies. For the mode at 12.15 c/d this leads to an apparent modulation with a time scale of about 129d. The close frequencies at 12.15 c/d are composed of a radial and a nonradial mode, suggesting a similarity with the Blazhko Effect seen in RR Lyrae stars.

Multi-site, multi-technique survey of Gamma Doradus candidates

We present the first results of a 2-year high-resolution spectroscopy campaign of 59 candidate Gamma Doradus stars which were mainly discovered from the HIPPARCOS astrometric mission. More than 60 % of the stars present line profile variations which can be interpreted as due to pulsation related to Gamma Doradus stars. For all stars we also derived the projected rotation velocity (up to more than 200 km\s). The amplitude ratios 2K/Delta m for the main HIPPARCOS frequency are in the range 35 - 96 (km\s)\mag. Less than 50 % of the candidates are possible members of binary systems, with 20 stars being confirmed Gamma Doradus. At least 6 stars present composite spectra, and in all but one case (for which only one spectrum could be obtained), the narrow component shows line profile variations, pointing towards an uncomfortable situation if this narrow component originates from a shell surrounding the star. This paper is the first of a series concerning mode identification using both photometric and spectroscopic methods for the confirmed Gamma Doradus stars of the present sample.

Preparing the COROT space mission: Building a photometric and variability database of stars in its field of view

The CNES/European space mission COROT will monitor asteroseismic targets located in selected fields to probe stellar interiors. Therefore, suitable candidate targets have to be searched for in order to optimize the scientific return of the mission. However, to be able to use the asteroseismic tools on the stars, their physical parameters must be known in advance. In this work, we detail the process of building a photometric database of all the stars brighter than V=8.0 mag in the field of view of COROT and the process of selecting suitable delta Scuti and gamma Dor-type stars for the mission.

Non-adiabatic theoretical observables in Delta Scuti stars

Phase differences and amplitude ratios at different colour photometric bands are currently being used to discriminate pulsation modes in order to facilitate mode identification of kappa-driven non-radial pulsating stars. In addition to physical inputs (e.g., mass, T_eff, etc.), these quantities depend on the non-adiabatic treatment of the atmosphere. This paper presents theoretical results concerning Delta Scuti pulsating stars. The envelope of each of these stellar structures possesses a convection zone whose development is determined by various factors. An interacting pulsation-atmosphere physical treatment is introduced which supplies two basic non-adiabatic physical quantities: the relative effective temperature variation and the phase lag phi^T, defined as the angle between effective temperature variations and radial displacement. These quantities can be used to derive the phase differences and amplitude ratios. Numerical values for these quantities depend critically on the alpha MLT parameter used to calculate the convection in the envelope. The dependence on alpha was analized and it was found that the use of colour observations may be of considerable importance in testing the MLT. Finally, examples are given of how alpha introduces uncertainties in the theoretical predictions regarding phases and amplitudes of photometric variations in Delta Scuti pulsating stars.

Preparing the COROT space mission: incidence and characterisation of pulsation in the Lower Instability Strip

By pursuing the goal to find new variables in the COROT field-of-view we characterised a sample of stars located in the lower part of the instability strip. Our sample is composed of stars belonging to the disk population in the solar neighbourhood. We found that 23% of the stars display multiperiodic light variability up to few mmag of amplitude. uvbyBeta photometry fixed most of the variables in the middle of the instability strip and high-resolution spectroscopy established that they have vsin i>100 km/s. The comparison with delta Sct stars in the whole Galaxy shows slightly different features, i.e., most delta Sct stars have a 0.05-mag redder (b-y)_0 index and lower vsin i values. Additional investigation in the open cluster NGC 6633 confirms the same incidence of variability, i.e., around 20%. The wide variety of pulsational behaviours of delta Sct stars (including unusual objects such as a variable beyond the blue edge or a rapidly rotating high-amplitude pulsator) makes them very powerful asteroseismic tools to be used by COROT. Being quite common among bright stars, delta Sct stars are suitable targets for optical observations from space.

The multimode pulsation of the delta Scuti star V784 Cassiopeae

We present an analysis of new Johnson and Stromgren photometric and medium-resolution spectroscopic observations of the delta Scuti type variable star V784 Cassiopeae. The data were obtained in three consecutive years between 1999 and 2001. The period analysis of the light curve resulted in the detection of four frequencies ranging from 9.15 c/d to 15.90 c/d, while there is a suggestion for more, unresolved frequency components, too. The mean Stromgren indices and Hipparcos parallax were combined to calculate the following physical parameters: =7100+-100 K, log g=3.8+-0.1, M_bol=1.50+-0.15 mag. The position of the star in the HR diagram was used to derive evolutionary mass and age yielding to a consistent picture of an evolved delta Scuti star with a mixture of radial plus non-radial modes.

New grids of ATLAS9 atmospheres I: Influence of convection treatments on model structure and on observable quantities

We present several new sets of grids of model stellar atmospheres computed with modified versions of the ATLAS9 code. Each individual set consists of several grids of models with different metallicities ranging from [M/H] = -2.0 to +1.0 dex. The grids range from 4000 to 10000 K in T_eff and from 2.0 to 5.0 dex in logg. The individual sets differ from each other and from previous ones essentially in the physics used for the treatment of the convective energy transport, in the higher vertical resolution of the atmospheres and in a finer grid in the (T_eff, logg) plane. These improvements enable the computation of derivatives of color indices accurate enough for pulsation mode identification. In addition, we show that the chosen vertical resolution is necessary and sufficient for the purpose of stellar interior modelling. To explain the physical differences between the model grids we provide a description of the currently available modifications of ATLAS9 according to their treatment of convection. Our critical analysis of the dependence of the atmospheric structure and observable quantities on convection treatment, vertical resolution and metallicity reveals that spectroscopic and photometric observations are best represented when using an inefficient convection treatment. This conclusion holds whatever convection formulation investigated here is used, i.e. MLT(alpha=0.5), CM and CGM are equivalent. We also find that changing the convection treatment can lead to a change in the effective temperature estimated from Stroemgren color indices from 200 to 400 K.

Pulsation of the Delta Scuti star Theta2 Tau: New multisite photometry and modelling of instability

The results of a multisite photometric campaign of Theta2 Tau are reported. This binary system consists of evolved and main-sequence A stars inside the instability strip. The 12th Delta Scuti Network campaign included 152 hours of high-precision photometry obtained at four observatories. This leads to the derivation of 11 frequencies of pulsation in the 10.8 to 14.6 c/d range. These frequencies confirm the results from previous Earth-based (1982-1986) as well as satellite (2000) photometry, although amplitude variability on a time scale of several years is present. We show that at least two high frequencies (26.18 and 26.73 c/d are also present in Theta 2 Tau. Arguments are given that these high frequencies originate in the main-sequence companion and are not combination frequencies, fi+fj, from the primary. Models for both the primary and the secondary components were checked for the instability against radial and nonradial oscillations. All hot models of the primary with Teff > 8000K are stable in the observed frequency range. The best fit between the theoretical and observed frequency ranges is achieved by models with Teff approximately equal to 7800K (or slightly higher), in agreement with photometric calibrations. The instability range spans two or three radial orders in the range p4 to p6 for radial modes. Post-main-sequence models (with or without overshooting) are preferable for the primary, but main-sequence models with overshooting cannot be excluded. For the less luminous secondary component the instability range is wider and spans 5 to 7 radial orders from p2 to p8. The observed frequencies lie around radial modes p5 to p6. The main uncertainties of these results are caused by a simple treatment of the convective flux in the hydrogen ionization zone.

Abundance analysis of targets for the COROT / MONS asteroseimology missions I. Semi-automatic abundance analysis of the gamma Dor star HD 49434

One of the goals of the ground-based support program for the COROT and MONS/Roemer satellite missions is to select and characterise suitable target stars for the part of the missions dedicated to asteroseismology. While the global atmospheric parameters may be determined with good accuracy from the Stromgren indices, careful abundance analysis must be made for the proposed main targets. This is a time consuming process considering the long list of primary and secondary targets. We have therefore developed new software called VWA for this task. The VWA automatically selects the least blended lines from the atomic line database VALD, and consequently adjusts the abundance in order to find the best match between the calculated and observed spectra. The variability of HD 49434 was discovered as part of COROT ground-based support observations. Here we present a detailed abundance analysis of HD 49434 using VWA. For most elements we find abundances somewhat below the Solar values, in particular we find [Fe/H] = -0.13(14). We also present the results from the study of the variability that is seen in spectroscopic and photometric time series observations. From the characteristics of the variation seen in photometry and in the line profiles we propose that HD 49434 is a variable star of the gamma Doradus type.

Probing the Stellar Surface of HD 209458 from Multicolor Transit Observations

Multicolor photometric observations of a planetary transit in the system HD 209458 are analyzed. The observations, made in the Stromgren photometric system, allowed a recalculation of the basic physical properties of the star-planet system. This includes derivation of linear limb-darkening values of HD 209458, which is the first time that a limb-darkening sequence has observationally been determined for a star other than the Sun. As the derived physical properties depend on assumptions that are currently known with limited precision only, scaling relations between derived parameters and assumptions are given. The observed limb-darkening is in good agreement with theoretical predictions from evolutionary stellar models combined with ATLAS model atmospheres, verifying these models for the temperature (Teff ~ 6000K), surface gravity (log g ~ 4.3) and mass (~ 1.2 Msol) of HD 209458.

The Delta Scuti star FG Vir. IV. Mode identifications and pulsation modelling

This paper examines the mode identification and presents pulsation models for FG Vir, for which 24 frequencies have been detected. Histograms of the frequency spacings show peaks which are identified with adjacent radial orders and rotational splitting. Pulsational $\ell$ values are deduced for eight modes by comparing the observed photometric phase lags between $v$ and $y$ variations with calculated values. The dominant pulsation mode at 12.72 c/d can be identified with $\ell$ = 1, while the 12.15 c/d mode is the radial fundamental. These results are in agreement with identifications published by Viskum et al. (1998). Based on the observational mode identifications and the Hipparcos distance, new models were computed with the constraint that the mode at 12.15 c/d is the radial fundamental mode. It is shown that with standard opacities, models in the appropriate T_eff, log L and log g ranges cannot reproduce the identification in the literature of 23.40 c/d as the third radial overtone. However, we show that observationally an $\ell$ = 1 (rather than radial) identification is equally probable. A large number of pulsation models were computed for FG Vir. A comparison between the observed frequencies and mode identifications and pulsation models leads to a mean density of / = 0.156 +- 0.002 depending on the opacity and chemical composition choice and on the possible overshooting from the convective core. The models also correctly predict the observed region of instability between 9 and 34 c/d. The effect of rotational coupling on the pulsation frequencies is estimated.
