Search for the Neutron Electric Dipole Moment: Contributions from the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory

A significant fraction of the research effort at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) focuses on weak interaction studies and searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. One major effort is the development of a new experimental technique to search for the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) that offers the potential for a factor of 100 increase in sensitivity over existing measurements. The search for this moment has the potential to reveal new sources of time reversal (T) and charge-conjugation-and-parity (CP) violation and to challenge calculations that propose extensions to the Standard Model. We provide a brief overview of the experiment as a whole and discuss the work underway at TUNL as part of this effort.

Spectral properties of correlation functions of fields with arbitrary position dependence in restricted geometries from the ballistic to the diffusive regimes

The transition between ballistic and diffusive motion poses difficult problems in several fields of physics. In this work we show how to calculate the spectra of the correlation functions between fields of arbitrary spatial dependence as seen by particles moving through the fields in regions bounded by specularly reflecting walls valid for diffusive and ballistic motion as well as the transition region in between for motion in 2 and 3 dimensions. Applications to relaxation in nmr are discussed.

Comments on "Limits on possible new nucleon monopole-dipole interactions from the spin relaxation rate of polarized $^3$He gas"

In the article "Limits on possible new nucleon monopole-dipole interactions from the spin relaxation rate of polarized $^3$He gas", new limits on short-range, Axion-like interactions are presented. In this comment it is shown that the theoretical treatement of the data overestimates the sensitivity of the proposed method. We provide the corrected limits.

Relaxation, frequency shifts and other phenomena at the transition between diffusion and ballistic motion

There are many fields where the transition from diffusive to ballistic motion is important. Here we deal with relaxation processes in nmr in gases. Correlation functions for trajectory variables (position and velocity) valid across this transition are known for several geometries in the case of specular wall reflections. In this work we show that the conditional probability density p(r,t|r_0,t_0) for a random walk satisfies the telegrapher's equation and present an analytic solution for this function. We will use it for calculating the relaxation due to an axion mediated force and a magnetic dipole impurity.

Relaxation of spins due to a magnetic field gradient, revisited; Identity of the Redfield and Torrey theories

There is an extensive literature on magnetic gradient induced spin relaxation. Cates, Schaefer and Happer (CSH) in a seminal paper, have solved the problem in the regime where diffusion theory (the Torrey equation is applicable using an expansion of the density matrix in diffusion equation eigenfunctions and angular momentum tensors. McGregor has solved the problem in the same regime using a slightly more general formulation using Redfield theory formulated in terms of the auto-correlation function of the fluctuating field seen by the spins and calculating the correlation functions using the diffusion theory Green's function. The results of both calculations were shown to agree for a special case. In the present work we show that the eigenfunction expansion of the Torrey equation yields the expansion of the Green's function for the diffusion equation thus showing the identity of this approach with that of Redfield theory. The general solution can also be obtained directly from the Torrey equation for the density matrix. Thus the physical content of the Redfield and Torrey approaches are identical. We then introduce a more general expression for the position autocorrelation function of particles moving in a closed cell, extending the range of applicability of the theory.

Relaxation of Spin Polarized $^3$He in Mixtures of $^3$He and $^4$He at $\sim$330 mK

We report the measurements of depolarization probabilities of polarized $^3$He in a rectangular acrylic cell with a deuterated tetraphenyl butadiene-doped deuterated polystyrene coating filled with superfluid $^4$He at $\sim$330 mk with a magnetic holding field of $\sim$7.3 G. We achieve a wall depolarization probability of $\sim1.0\times10^{-7}$. Such a surface will find application in a new experiment searching for the neutron electric dipole moment and other applications.

Electric dipole moment searches: Effect of linear electric field frequency shifts induced in confined gases, II

The next generation of particle edm searches will be at such a high sensitivity that it will be possible for the results to be contaminated by a systematic error resulting from the interaction of the motional (E x v/c) magnetic field with stray field gradients. In this paper we extend previous work to present an analytic form for the frequency shift in the case of a rectangular storage vessel and discuss the implications of the result for the neutron edm experiment which will be installed at the SNS (Spallation Neutron Source) by the LANL collaboration

Measuring the Neutron Lifetime Using Magnetically Trapped Neutrons

The neutron beta-decay lifetime plays an important role both in understanding weak interactions within the framework of the Standard Model and in theoretical predictions of the primordial abundance of 4He in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. In previous work, we successfully demonstrated the trapping of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in a conservative potential magnetic trap. A major upgrade of the apparatus is nearing completion at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). In our approach, a beam of 0.89 nm neutrons is incident on a superfluid 4He target within the minimum field region of an Ioffe-type magnetic trap. A fraction of the neutrons is downscattered in the helium to energies <200 neV, and those in the appropriate spin state become trapped. The inverse process is suppressed by the low phonon density of helium at temperatures less than 200 mK, allowing the neutron to travel undisturbed. When the neutron decays the energetic electron ionizes the helium, producing scintillation light that is detected using photomultiplier tubes. Statistical limitations of the previous apparatus will be alleviated by significant increases in field strength and trap volume resulting in twenty times more trapped neutrons.

Relaxation of Spin Polarized $^3$He in Mixtures of $^3$He and $^4$He Below the $^4$He Lambda Point

We report the first study of the depolarization behavior of spin polarized 3He in a mixture of 3He-4He at a temperature below the 4He Lambda point in a deuterated TetraPhenyl Butadiene-doped deuterated PolyStyrene (dTPB-dPS) coated acrylic cell. In our experiment the measured 3He relaxation time is due to the convolution of the 3He longitudinal relaxation time, T1, and the diffusion time constant of 3He in superfluid 4He since depolarization takes place on the walls. We have obtained a 3He relaxation time ~3000 seconds at a temperature around 1.9K. We have shown that it's possible to achieve values of wall depolarization probability on the order of (1-2)x10^-7 for polarized 3He in the superfluid 4He from a dTPB-dPS coated acrylic surface.

Linear electric field frequency shift (important for next generation electric dipole moment searches) induced in confined gases by a magnetic field gradient

The search for particle electric dipole moments (edm) represents a most promising way to search for physics beyond the standard model. A number of groups are planning a new generation of experiments using stored gases of various kinds. In order to achieve the target sensitivities it will be necessary to deal with the systematic error resulting from the interaction of the well-known $\overrightarrow{v}\times \overrightarrow{E}$ field with magnetic field gradients (often referred to as the geometric phase effect (Commins, ED; Am. J. Phys. \QTR{bf}{59}, 1077 (1991), Pendlebury, JM \QTR{em}{et al;} Phys. Rev. \QTR{bf}{A70}, 032102 (2004)). This interaction produces a frequency shift linear in the electric field, mimicking an edm. In this work we introduce an analytic form for the velocity auto-correlation function which determines the velocity-position correlation function which in turn determines the behavior of the frequency shift (Lamoreaux, SK and Golub, R; Phys. Rev \QTR{bf}{A71}, 032104 (2005)) and show how it depends on the operating conditions of the experiment. We also discuss some additional issues.

Detailed discussion of a linear electric field frequency shift (important for next generation) electric dipole moment searches) induced in confined gases by a magnetic field gradient: Implications for electric dipole moment experiments (II)

The search for particle electric dipole moments represents a most promising way to search for physics beyond the standard model. A number of groups are planning a new generation of experiments using stored gases of various kinds. In order to achieve the target sensitivities it will be necessary to deal with the systematic error resulting from the interaction of the well-known E x v field with magnetic field gradients (often referred to as the geometric phase effect [9,10]). This interaction produces a frequency shift linear in the electric field, mimicking an edm. In this work we introduce an analytic model for the correlation function which determines the behavior of the frequency shift [11], and show in detail how it depends on the operating conditions of the experiment. We also propose a method to directly measure ths correlation function under the exact conditions of a given experiment.

Detailed Discussion of a linear electric field frequency shift induced in confined gases by a magnetic field gradient: Implications for neutron electric dipole moment experiments

The search for particle electric dipole moments (edm) is one of the best places to look for physics beyond the standard model because the size of time reversal violation predicted by the standard model is incompatible with present ideas concerning the creation of the Baryon-Antibaryon asymmetry. As the sensitivity of these edm searches increases more subtle systematic effects become important. We develop a general analytical approach to describe a systematic effect recently observed in an electric dipole moment experiment using stored particles \cite{JMP}. Our approach is based on the relationship between the systematic frequency shift and the velocity autocorrelation function of the resonating particles. Our results, when applied to well-known limiting forms of the correlation function, are in good agreement with both the limiting cases studied in recent work that employed a numerical/heuristic analysis. Our general approach explains some of the surprising results observed in that work and displays the rich behavior of the shift for intermediate frequencies, which has not been previously studied.

Temperature Dependence of the UCN Loss Rate

We report about the first results obtained with our Ultra High Vacuum cryostat recently commissioned at HMI to study Ultra Cold Neutrons(UCN) loss rate under low temperatures(down to 4K) and well controlled sample environment. Our analysis of the temperature dependence of UCN loss rate on Cu surface allowed us to rule out the subbarier model in support of the 1/v model and propose a reasonable explanation of the low temperature upscattering.

An investigation into a half page from Newton's Principia in the wake of Chandra

There is a section in Chandrashekar's ''Newton's Principia for the Common Reader '', (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1995) in which he claims to find a small error in the Principia. . However we believe that there is a mistake of interpretation underlying Chandra's claim and that the Principia is correct as it stands. This short paper describes Chandra's misinterpretation of a geometric construction of Newton and gives an outline of Newton's demonstration by following the standard English version of the Principia line by line and converting it into modern mathematical notation in the spirit of Chandra's book.

Calculation of the ultracold neutron upscattering loss probability in fluid walled storage bottles using experimental measurements of the thermomechanical properties of Fomblin

We present experimental measurements of the properties of a liquid "Fomblin" surface obtained by the quasielastic scattering of laser light. The properties include the surface tension and viscosity as a function of temperature. The results are compared to the measurements of the bulk fluid properties. We then calculate the upscattering rate of ultracold neutrons (UCN) from thermally excited surface capillary waves on the liquid surface and compare the results to experimental measurements of the UCN lifetime in Fomblin fluid-walled UCN storage bottles, and show that the excess loss rate for UCN energies near the Fomblin potential can be explained. The rapid temperature dependence of the Fomblin storage lifetime is explained by our analysis.

Production of UCN by Downscattering in superfluid He4

Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) are neutrons with energies so low they can be stored in material bottles and magnetic traps. They have been used to provide the currently most accurate experiments on the neutron life time and electric dipole moment. UCN can be produced in superfluid Helium at significantly higher densities than by other methods. The predominant production process is usually by one phonon emission which can only occur at a single incident neutron energy because of momentum and energy conservation. However UCN can also be produced by multiphonon processes. It is the purpose of this work to examine this multiphonon production of UCN. We look at several different incident neutron spectra, including cases where the multiphonon production is significant, and see how the relative importance of multiphonon production is influenced by the incident spectrum.
