Evidence for parity violation in gravitational fields

Discrete symmetries in gravity have only been tested for low energy, non-relativistic matter, confirming the perfectly symmetric general relativity. A hint for high energy $\cal{CP}$ violation in gravitational fields has recently been found in the HERA Compton polarimeter's two spectra, measured with electron and positron beams. Here we report results of the analysis of the same polarimeter's 314896 spectra, acquired during 2004--2007 and tagged by laser polarization states allowing the separation of charge ($\cal C$) and space parity ($\cal P$) contributions. The measured Compton edge energy asymmetry, induced by the laser helicity flips, is as high as $(4.9\pm0.5)\cdot10^{-5}$ which corresponds to a helicity-dependent difference in the gravitational potentials of $(1.7\pm0.2)\cdot10^{-14}$. In the case of the observed anomalous coupling's energy independence, the spin asymmetric gravity will contribute to the galactic rotational curves. Further analysis and calculations can determine whether the observed magnitude of the gravitational parity violation is sufficient for detaching this famous phenomena from the dark matter theory.

Beam-test evaluation of pre-production Low Gain Avalanche Detectors for the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector

The High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) will be installed in the ATLAS experiment as part of the Phase-II upgrade for the High Luminosity-Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). It will mitigate pile-up effects in the forward region, and measure per bunch luminosity. The design of HGTD is based on Low Gain Avalanche Detector (LGAD) sensors. This paper presents the results of beam-test campaigns conducted at CERN and DESY in 2023 and 2024 on single LGADs from HGTD pre-production test structures, before and after neutron irradiation up to fluences of $2.5 \times 10^{15}~\mathrm{n_{eq}/cm^2}$. The tested LGADs can meet HGTD requirements in terms of charge collection, time resolution, and hit efficiency, even under HL-LHC end-of-life conditions, supporting their deployment in the final detector.

Thermal Cycling Reliability of Hybrid Pixel Sensor Modules for The ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector

The reliability of bump connection structures has become a critical aspect of future silicon detectors for particle physics. The High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) for the ATLAS experiment at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider will require 8032 hybrid pixel sensor modules, composed of two Low Gain Avalanche Diode sensors bump-bonded to two readout ASICs and glued to a passive PCB. The detector will operate at low temperature (-30 degrees Celsius) to mitigate the impact of irradiation. The thermomechanical reliability of flip-chip bump connections in HGTD modules is a critical concern, particularly due to their characteristically lower bump density (pixel pitch dimensions of 1.3 mm by 1.3 mm). This paper elaborates on the challenges arising from this design characteristic. Finite element analysis and experimental testing were employed to investigate failure modes in the flip-chip bump structures under thermal cycling from -45 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius and to guide the module redesign. The optimized design demonstrates significantly enhanced robustness and is projected to fulfill the full lifetime requirements of the HGTD.

Study of $t\bar{t}H$ production with $H\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ at the HL-LHC

A feasibility study for an experimental analysis searching for $t\bar{t}H(H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ production at the LHC and its high luminosity phase is presented in this note. Unlike search strategies currently being used in experimental collaborations, the present analysis exploits jet substructure techniques and focuses on the reconstruction of boosted Higgs bosons, to obtain sensitivity to the signal in a simple cut-based analysis. The $t\bar{t} +$ jets background may be constrained in the proposed analysis through a control region with very small signal contamination. Using this analysis strategy, the $t\bar{t}H(H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ process could be observed at the LHC, in the semi-leptonic channel alone, with a significance of $5.41\pm 0.12$ for $\mathcal{L}=300\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. For the same integrated luminosity, in the High Luminosity LHC scenario with an upgraded detector, a significance of $6.13\pm 0.11$ may be obtained. The top Yukawa coupling could be measured with a 35\% uncertainty using $\mathcal{L}=300\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of LHC data and of 17\% at the HL-LHC scenario with $\mathcal{L}=3000\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$. In the same luminosity scenarios, the signal strength is equally expected to have a 18$\%$ and 5$\%$ uncertainty, respectively. Finally, it was found that re-clustered jets may be used without loss of efficiency.

CP tests of Higgs couplings in $t\bar{t}h$ semileptonic events at the LHC

The CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks is addressed in this paper, in single charged lepton final states of $t\bar{t}h$ events produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Pure scalar ($h=H$) and pseudo-scalar ($h=A$) Higgs boson signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed using a kinematic fit. Angular distributions of the decay products, as well as CP-sensitive asymmetries, are exploited to separate and gain sensitivity to possible pseudo-scalar components of the Higgs boson and reduce the contribution from the dominant irreducible background $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$. Significant differences are found between the pure CP-even and -odd signal hypotheses as well as with respect to the Standard Model background, in particular the $t\bar{t} b\bar{b}$ contribution. Such differences survive the event reconstruction, allowing to define optimal observables to extract the Higgs couplings parameters from a global fit. A dedicated analysis is applied to efficiently identify signal events and reject as much as possible the expected Standard Model background. The results obtained are compared with a similar analysis in the dilepton channel. We show that the single lepton channel is more promising overall and can be used in combination to study the CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs coupling in $t\bar{t}h$ events at the LHC

The determination of the CP nature of the top quark Yukawa coupling is addressed in this phenomenological work, using $t\bar{t}h$ events at the $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV LHC, with $h\rightarrow b\bar b$ and through the dilepton decay channel of $t\bar{t}$. Signal events were generated for pure $CP$-even, pure $CP$-odd and mixed-$CP$ coupling scenarios. Standard Model (SM) backgrounds were also considered. Angular distributions and asymmetries were studied and found to be potentially good probes to the $CP$ nature of the coupling, even after detector simulation and full event reconstruction using a kinematic fit. Expected limits to the $t\bar th$ production cross-section times branching ratio were obtained for a range of top quark Yukawa $CP$-mixing angles and for different integrated luminosities of the LHC.

Probing the CP nature of the Higgs coupling in $t{\bar t}h$ events at the LHC

The determination of the CP nature of the Higgs coupling to top quarks is addressed in this paper, using $t{\bar t} h$ events produced in $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Dileptonic final states are employed, with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets, corresponding to the decays $t\rightarrow bW^+ \rightarrow b \ell^+ν_\ell$, $\bar{t}\rightarrow \bar{b}W^- \rightarrow \bar{b} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$. Pure scalar ($h=H$), pure pseudo-scalar ($h=A$) and CP-violating Higgs boson signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed through a kinematic fit. We furthermore generate samples that have both a CP-even and a CP-odd component in the $t \bar t h$ coupling in order to probe the ratio of the two components. New angular distributions of the decay products, as well as CP angular asymmetries, are explored in order to separate the scalar from the pseudo-scalar components of the Higgs boson and reduce the contribution from the dominant irreducible background, $t{\bar t}b{\bar b}$. Significant differences between the angular distributions and asymmetries are observed, even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, allowing to define the best observables for a global fit of the Higgs couplings parameters.

Angular distributions in $t{\bar t}H (H\rightarrow b\bar{b})$ reconstructed events at the LHC

The associated production of a Higgs boson and a top-quark pair, $t{\bar t} H$, in proton-proton collisions is addressed in this paper for a center of mass energy of 13TeV at the LHC. Dileptonic final states of $t{\bar t}H$ events with two oppositely charged leptons and four jets from the decays $t\rightarrow bW^+ \rightarrow b \ell^+ν_\ell$, $\bar{t}\rightarrow \bar{b}W^- \rightarrow \bar{b} \ell^-\barν_\ell$ and $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$, are used. Signal events, generated with MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, are fully reconstructed by applying a kinematic fit. New angular distributions of the decay products as well as angular asymmetries are explored in order to improve discrimination of $t{\bar t} H$ signal events over the dominant irreducible background contribution, $t{\bar t}b{\bar b}$. Even after the full kinematic fit reconstruction of the events, the proposed angular distributions and asymmetries are still quite different in the $t\bar{t}H$ signal and the dominant background ($t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$).
