Frustrated mixed-spin ladders: Evidence for a bond order wave phase between rung-singlet and Haldane phases

In frustrated spin ladders the interplay of frustration and correlations leads to the familiar Haldane (H) and rung-singlet (RS) phases. The nature of the transition between these two phases is still under debate. In this paper we tackle this issue using tools of quantum information theory. We consider frustrated mixed-spin-(1, 1/2) ladders with antiferromagnetic leg, rung and diagonal couplings, and calculate various quantities, such as the entanglement entropy (EE), the Schmidt gap, and the level degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum (ES). We use two numerical techniques, the infinite time-evolving block decimation (iTEBD) and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We demonstrate that there exists an intermediate phase in which the ES levels do not exhibit the characteristic degeneracies of the H and RS phases. To understand the underlying physics in this phase, we investigate short-range spin correlations along legs, rungs and diagonals and show that in this intermediate phase long-wavelength modulations occur, akin to bond order waves.

Conversion of projected entangled pair states into a canonical form

We propose an algorithm to convert a projected entangled pair state (PEPS) into a canonical form, analogous to the well-known canonical form of a matrix product state. Our approach is based on a variational gauging ansatz for the QR tensor decomposition of PEPS columns into a matrix product operator and a finite depth circuit of unitaries and isometries. We describe a practical initialization scheme that leads to rapid convergence in the QR optimization. We explore the performance and stability of the variational gauging algorithm in norm calculations for the transverse-field Ising and Heisenberg models on a square lattice. We also demonstrate energy optimization within the PEPS canonical form for the transverse-field Ising and Heisenberg models. We expect this canonical form to open up improved analytical and numerical approaches for PEPS.

Single-layer tensor network study of the Heisenberg model with chiral interactions on a kagome lattice

We study the antiferromagnetic kagome Heisenberg model with additional scalar-chiral interaction by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz. We discuss in detail the implementation of optimization algorithm in the framework of the single-layer tensor network based on the corner-transfer matrix technique. Our benchmark based on the full-update algorithm shows that the single-layer algorithm is stable, which leads to the same level of accuracy as the double-layer ansatz but with much less computation time. We further apply this algorithm to study the nature of the kagome Heisenberg model with a scalar-chiral interaction by computing the bond dimension scaling of magnetization, bond energy difference, chiral order parameter and correlation length. In particular, we find that for strong chiral coupling the correlation length, which is extracted from the transfer matrix, saturates to a finite value for large bond dimension, representing a gapped spin-liquid state. Further comparison with density matrix renormalization group results supports that our iPEPS faithfully represents the time-reversal symmetry breaking chiral state. Our iPEPS simulation results shed new light on constructing PEPS for describing gapped chiral topological states.

Quantum phase diagram of two-dimensional transverse field Ising model: unconstrained tree tensor network and mapping analysis

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated transverse field Ising (TFI) model on the checkerboard lattice (CL), which consists of Néel, collinear, quantum paramagnet and plaquette-valence bond solid (VBS) phases. We implement a numerical simulation that is based on the recently developed unconstrained tree tensor network (TTN) ansatz, which systematically improves the accuracy over the conventional methods as it exploits the internal gauge selections. At the highly frustrated region ($J_2=J_1$), we observe a second order phase transition from plaquette-VBS state to paramagnet phase at the critical magnetic field, $Γ_{c}=0.28$, with the associated critical exponents $ν=1$ and $γ\simeq0.4$, which are obtained within the finite size scaling analysis on different lattice sizes $N=4\times 4, 6\times 6, 8\times8$. The stability of plaquette-VBS phase at low magnetic fields is examined by spin-spin correlation function, which verifies the presence of plaquette-VBS at $J_2=J_1$ and rules out the existence of a Néel phase. In addition, our numerical results suggest that the transition from Néel (for $J_2<J_1$) to plaquette-VBS phase is a deconfined phase transition. Moreover, we introduce a mapping, which renders the low-energy effective theory of TFI on CL to be the same model on $J_1-J_2$ square lattice (SL). We show that the plaquette-VBS phase of the highly frustrated point $J_2=J_1$ on CL is mapped to the emergent string-VBS phase on SL at $J_2=0.5J_1$.

$U(1)$-symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair state study of the spin-$1/2$ square $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model

We develop an improved variant of $U(1)$-symmetric infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz to investigate the ground state phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ square $J_{1}-J_{2}$ Heisenberg model. In order to improve the accuracy of the ansatz, we discuss a simple strategy to select automatically relevant symmetric sectors and also introduce an optimization method to treat second-neighbor interactions more efficiently. We show that variational ground-state energies of the model obtained by the $U(1)$-symmetric iPEPS ansatz (for a fixed bond dimension $D$) set a better upper bound, improving previous tensor-network-based results. By studying the finite-$D$ scaling of the magnetically order parameter, we find a Néel phase for $J_2/J_1<0.53$. For $0.53<J_2/J_1<0.61$, a non-magnetic columnar valence bond solid (VBS) state is established as observed by the pattern of local bond energy. The divergent behavior of correlation length $ξ\sim D^{1.2}$ and vanishing order parameters are consistent with a deconfined Néel-to-VBS transition at $J^{c_1}_{2}/J_1=0.530(5)$, where estimated critical anomalous exponents are $η_{s} \sim 0.6$ and $η_{d} \sim 1.9$ for spin and dimer correlations respectively. We show that the associated VBS order parameter monotonically increases with $J_2/J_1$ and finally a first-order quantum phase transition takes place at $J^{c_2}_{2}/J_1=0.610(2)$ to the conventional Stripe phase. We compare our results with earlier DMRG and PEPS studies and suggest future directions for resolving remaining issues.

Quantum phase diagram of spin-$1$ $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice: an infinite projected entangled-pair state and density matrix renormalization group study

We study the spin-$1$ Heisenberg model on the square lattice with the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and the next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings by using the infinite projected entangled-pair state (iPEPS) ansatz and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation. The iPEPS simulation, which studies the model directly in the thermodynamic limit, finds a crossing of the ground state from the Néel magnetic state to the stripe magnetic state at $J_2/J_1 \simeq 0.549$, showing a direct phase transition. In the finite-size DMRG calculation on the cylinder geometry up to the cylinder width $L_y = 10$, we find a very small intermediate regime $\sim 0.005 J_1$ between the two magnetic order phases, which may imply the absent intermediate phase. Both calculations identify that the stripe order comes with a first-order transition at $J_2/J_1 \simeq 0.549$. Our results indicate that unlike the spin-$1/2$ $J_1-J_2$ square model, quantum fluctuations in the spin-$1$ model may be not strong enough to stabilize an intermediate non-magnetic phase.

Emergence of string-valence bond solid state in the frustrated $J_1-J_2$ transverse field Ising model on the square lattice

We investigate the ground state nature of the transverse field Ising model on the $J_1-J_2$ square lattice at the highly frustrated point $J_2/J_1=0.5$. At zero field, the model has an exponentially large degenerate classical ground state, which can be affected by quantum fluctuations for non-zero field toward a unique quantum ground state. We consider two types of quantum fluctuations, harmonic ones by using linear spin wave theory (LSWT) with single-spin flip excitations above a long range magnetically ordered background and anharmonic fluctuations, by employing a cluster-operator approach (COA) with multi-spin cluster type fluctuations above a non-magnetic cluster ordered background. Our findings reveal that the harmonic fluctuations of LSWT fail to lift the extensive degeneracy as well as signaling a violation of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. However, the string-type anharmonic fluctuations of COA are able to lift the degeneracy toward a string-valence bond solid (VBS) state, which is obtained from an effective theory consistent with the Hellmann-Feynman theorem as well. Our results are further confirmed by implementing numerical tree tensor network simulation. The emergent non-magnetic string-VBS phase is gapped and breaks lattice rotational symmetry with only two-fold degeneracy, which bears a continuous quantum phase transition at $Γ/J_1 \cong 0.50$ to the quantum paramagnet phase of high fields. The critical behavior is characterized by $ν\cong 1.0$ and $γ\cong 0.33$ exponents.

Topological phases of the compass ladder model

We characterize phases of the compass ladder model by using degenerate perturbation theory, symmetry fractionalization, and numerical techniques. Through degenerate perturbation theory we obtain an effective Hamiltonian for each phase of the model, and show that a cluster model and the Ising model encapsulate the nature of all phases. In particular, the cluster phase has a symmetry-protected topological order, protected by a specific $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, and the Ising phase has a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry-breaking order characterized by a local order parameter expressed by the magnetization exponent $0.12\pm0.01$. The symmetry-protected topological phases inherit all properties of the cluster phases, although we show analytically and numerically that they belong to different classes. In addition, we study the one-dimensional quantum compass model, which naturally emerges from the compass ladder, and show that a partial symmetry breaking occurs upon quantum phase transition. We numerically demonstrate that a local order parameter accurately determines the quantum critical point and its corresponding universality class.

Quantum phase transition as an interplay of Kitaev and Ising interactions

We study the interplay between the Kitaev and Ising interactions on both ladder and two dimensional lattices. We show that the ground state of the Kitaev ladder is a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which is protected by a $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. It is confirmed by the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum and non-trivial phase factors (inequivalent projective representations of the symmetries), which are obtained within infinite matrix-product representation of numerical density matrix renormalization group. We derive the effective theory to describe the topological phase transition on both ladder and two-dimensional lattices, which is given by the transverse field Ising model with/without next-nearest neighbor coupling. The ladder has three phases, namely, the Kitaev SPT, symmetry broken ferro/antiferromagnetic order and classical spin-liquid. The non-zero quantum critical point and its corresponding central charge are provided by the effective theory, which are in full agreement with the numerical results, i.e., the divergence of entanglement entropy at the critical point, change of the entanglement spectrum degeneracy and a drop in the ground-state fidelity. The central charge of the critical points are either c=1 or c=2, with the magnetization and correlation exponents being 1/4 and 1/2, respectively. In the absence of frustration, the 2D lattice shows a topological phase transition from the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin-liquid state to the long-range ordered Ising phase at finite ratio of couplings, while in the presence of frustration, an order-by-disorder transition is induced by the Kitaev term. The 2D classical spin-liquid phase is unstable against the addition of Kitaev term toward an ordered phase before the transition to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin-liquid state.

Symmetry fractionalization: Symmetry-protected topological phases of the bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain

We study different phases of the one-dimensional bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model by using the symmetry fractionalization mechanism. We employ the infinite matrix-product state representation of the ground state (through the infinite-size density matrix renormalization group algorithm) to obtain inequivalent projective representations of the (unbroken) symmetry groups of the model, which are used to identify the different phases. We find that the model exhibits trivial as well as symmetry-protected topological phases. The symmetry-protected topological phases are Haldane phases on even/odd bonds, which are protected by the time-reversal (acting on the spin as $σ\rightarrow-σ$), parity (permutation of the chain about a specific bond), and dihedral ($π$-rotations about a pair of orthogonal axes) symmetries. Additionally, we investigate the phases of the most general two-body bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ model, which respects the time-reversal, parity, and dihedral symmetries, and obtain its corresponding twelve different types of the symmetry-protected topological phases.
