Crystal field theory of Co$^{2+}$ in doped ZnO

We present a crystal field theory of transition metal impurities in semiconductors in a trigonally distorted tetrahedral coordination. We develop a perturbative scheme to treat covalency effects within the weak ligand field case (Coulomb interaction dominates over one-particle splitting) and apply it to ZnO:Co$^{2+}$ (3d$^7$). Using the large value of the charge transfer energy $Δ_{pd}$ compared to the $p$-$d$ hoppings, we perform a canonical transformation which eliminates the coupling with ligands to first order. As a result, we obtain an effective single-ion Hamiltonian, where the influence of the ligands is reduced to the one-particle 'crystal field' acting on $d$-like-functions. This derivation allows to elucidate the microscopic origin of various 'crystal field' parameters and covalency reduction factors which are usually used empirically for the interpretation of optical and ESR experiments. The connection of these parameters with the geometry of the local environment becomes transparent. The experimentally known $g$-values and the zero-field splitting 2D are very well reproduced by the exact diagonalization of the effective single-ion Hamiltonian with only one adjustable parameter $Δ_{pd}$. Alternatively to the numerical diagonalization we use perturbation theory in the weak field scheme (Coulomb interaction $\gg$ cubic splitting $\gg$ trigonal splitting and spin-orbit coupling) to derive compact analytical expressions for the spin-Hamiltonian parameters that reproduce the result of exact diagonalization within 20% of accuracy.

Spectral density of the Hubbard-model by the continued fraction method

We present the continued fraction method (CFM) as a new microscopic approximation to the spectral density of the Hubbard model in the correlated metal phase away from half filling. The quantity expanded as a continued fraction is the single particle Green function. Leading spectral moments are taken into account through a set of real expansion coefficients, as known from the projection technique. The new aspect is to add further stages to the continued fraction, with complex coefficients, thus defining a terminator function. This enables us to treat the entire spectral range of the Green function on equal footing and determine the energy scale of the Fermi liquid quasiparticles by minimizing the total energy. The solution is free of phenomenological parameters and remains well defined in the strong coupling limit, near the doping controlled metal-insulator transition. Our results for the density of states agree reasonably with several variants of the dynamical mean field theory. The CFM requires minimal numerical effort and can be generalized in several ways that are interesting for applications to real materials.

Insulator-metal-insulator transition and selective spectral weight transfer in a disordered strongly correlated system

We investigate the metal insulator transitions at finite temperature for the Hubbard model with diagonal alloy disorder. We solve the dynamical mean field theory equations with the non crossing approximation and we use the coherent potential approximation to handle disorder. The excitation spectrum is given for various correlation strength $U$ and disorder. Two successive metal insulator transitions are observed at integer filling values as $U$ is increased. An important selective transfer of spectral weight arises upon doping. The strong influence of the temperature on the low energy dynamics is studied in details.

Effect of Hund's exchange on the spectral function of a triply orbital degenerate correlated metal

We present an approach based on the dynamical mean field theory which is able to give the excitation spectrum of a triply degenerate Hubbard model with a Hund's exchange invariant under spin rotation. The lattice problem can be mapped onto a local Anderson model containing 64 local eigenstates. This local problem is solved by a generalized non-crossing approximation. The influence of Hund's coupling J is examined in detail for metallic states close to the metal insulator transition. The band-filling is shown to play a crucial role concerning the effect of J on the low energy dynamics.

Nearest neighbor exchange in Co- and Mn-doped ZnO

We calculate the magnetic interactions between two nearest neighbor substitutional magnetic ions (Co or Mn) in ZnO by means of density functional theory and compare it with the available experimental data. Using the local spin density approximation we find a coexistence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings for ZnO:Co, in contrast to experiment. For ZnO:Mn both couplings are antiferromagnetic but deviate quantitatively from measurement. That points to the necessity to account better for the strong electron correlation at the transition ion site which we have done by applying the LSDA+U method. We show that we have to distinguish two different nearest neighbor exchange integrals for the two systems in question which are all antiferromagnetic with values between -1.0 and -2.0 meV in reasonable agreement with experiment.

Charge Transfer Excitations in Insulating Copper Oxides

A semi-quantitative cluster approach is developed to describe the charge transfer (CT) electron-hole excitations in insulating cuprates in a rather wide energy range up to 10- 15 eV. It generalizes the Zhang-Ng (ZN) model of CT excitons by considering the complete set of Cu3d and O2p orbitals within the CuO4 embedded molecular cluster method and by introducing one-center (intra-center) Frenkel-like and two-center (inter-center) excitons. Special attention is paid to the transition matrix element effects both in optical and electron energy loss spectra (EELS). In the latter case we obtain the momentum dependence of matrix elements both for intra-center and inter-center transitions. We are able to give a semi-quantitative description of the optical and EELS spectra for a large number of 0D (like CuB2O4), 1D (Sr2CuO3) and 2D (like Sr2CuO2Cl2) insulating cuprates in a unifying manner. By comparing our analysis with the experimental data we find that the CT gap in insulating cuprates is determined by nearly degenerate intra-center localized excitations and inter-center CT excitons. The corresponding EELS intensity is found to be strongly k-dependent: even for isolated exciton it sharply decreases by approaching the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary. It is shown that the interaction of two-center excitons can result in destructive interference effects with an intensity compensation point.

Calculated de Haas-van Alphen quantities of Ce(M)In5 (M=Co, Rh, and Ir) compounds

We report a critical analysis of the electronic structures and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) quantities of the heavy-fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$, CeRhIn$_5$, and CeIrIn$_5$. The electronic structures are investigated {\it ab initio} on the basis of full-potential band-structure calculations, adopting both the scalar- and fully relativistic formulations within the framework of the local spin-density approximation (LSDA). In contrast to another recent study, in which a pronounced change of the Fermi surface due to relativistic effects and therefore the importance of relativistic interactions for the superconductivity was claimed, we find only minor relativistic modifications of the band structure in our calculations. The {\it ab initio} calculated dHvA quantities are in good agreement with experimental data for CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$, when we adopt the delocalized LSDA description for the Ce $4f$ states. For CeRhIn$_5$, however, a better agreement with experiment is obtained when the Ce $4f$ electron is treated as a localized core electron. The implications for an emerging picture of the localization behavior of the $4f$ electron in these materials are discussed. We furthermore compare our calculated dHvA quantities with other recent relativistic calculations and discuss the differences between them.

Dispersion of the dielectric function of a charge-transfer insulator

We study the problem of dielectric response in the strong coupling regime of a charge transfer insulator. The frequency and wave number dependence of the dielectric function $ε({\bf q},ω)$ and its inverse $ε^{-1}({\bf q},ω)$ is the main object of consideration. We show that the problem, in general, cannot be reduced to a calculation within the Hubbard model, which takes into account only a restricted number of electronic states near the Fermi energy. The contribution of the rest of the system to the longitudinal response (i.e. to $ε^{-1}({\bf q},ω)$) is essential for the whole frequency range. With the use of the spectral representation of the two-particle Green's function we show that the problem may be divided into two parts: into the contributions of the weakly correlated and the Hubbard subsystems. For the latter we propose an approach that starts from the correlated paramagnetic ground state with strong antiferromagnetic fluctuations. We obtain a set of coupled equations of motion for the two-particle Green's function that may be solved by means of the projection technique. The solution is expressed by a two particle basis that includes the excitonic states with electron and hole separated at various distances. We apply our method to the multiband Hubbard (Emery) model that describes layered cuprates. We show that strongly dispersive branches exist in the excitonic spectrum of the 'minimal' Emery model ($1/U_d=U_p=t_{pp}=0$) and consider the dependence of the spectrum on finite oxygen hopping $t_{pp}$ and on-site repulsion $U_p$. The relationship of our calculations to electron energy loss spectroscopy is discussed.

Recursion method and one-hole spectral function of the Majumdar-Ghosh model

We consider the application of the recursion method to the calculation of one-particle Green's functions for strongly correlated systems and propose a new way how to extract the information about the infinite system from the exact diagonalisation of small clusters. Comparing the results for several cluster sizes allows us to establish those Lanczos coefficients that are not affected by the finite size effects and provide the information about the Green's function of the macroscopic system. The analysis of this 'bulk-related' subset of coefficients supplemented by alternative analytic approaches allows to infer their asymptotic behaviour and to propose an approximate analytical form for the 'terminator' of the Green's function continued fraction expansion for the infinite system. As a result, the Green's function acquires the branch cut singularity corresponding to the incoherent part of the spectrum. The method is applied to the spectral function of one-hole in the Majumdar-Ghosh model (the one-dimensional $ t-J-J^{\prime}$ model at $J^{\prime}/J=1/2$). For this model, the branch cut starts at finite energy $ω_0$, but there is no upper bound of the spectrum, corresponding to a linear increase of the recursion coefficients. Further characteristics of the spectral function are band gaps in the middle of the band and bound states below $ω_0$ or within the gaps. The band gaps arise due to the period doubling of the unit cell and show up as characteristic oscillations of the recursion coefficients on top of the linear increase.

Planar spin exchange in LiNiO_2

We study the planar spin exchange couplings in LiNiO2 using a perturbative approach. We show that the inclusion of the trigonal crystal field splitting at the Oxygen sites leads to the appearance of antiferromagnetic exchange integrals in deviation from the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson rules for this 90 degree bond. That gives a microscopic foundation for the recently observed coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings in the orbitally-frustrated state of LiNiO2. (F. Reynaud et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3638 (2001))

Magnetic anisotropy of BaCu2Si2O7: theory and antiferromagnetic resonance

Antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) of BaCu2Si2O7 and a microscopic theory of the magnetic anisotropy of spin 1/2 chain compounds with folded CuO3 geometry being in good agreement with the available data are presented. The AFMR studies at 4.2 K show the existence of two gaps (40 and 76 GHz) at zero magnetic field and of two spin re-orientation transitions for H||c. The microscopic origin of the two gaps is shown to be Hund's rule coupling which leads to a "residual anisotropy" beyond the compensation of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term by the symmetric anisotropy which would be valid without Hund's coupling.

Theoretical de Haas-van Alphen Data and Plasma Frequencies of MgB2 and TaB2

The de Haas-van Alphen-frequencies as well as the effective masses for a magnetic field parallel to the crystallographic c-axis are calculated within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) for MgB2 and TaB2. In addition, we analyze the plasma frequencies computed for each Fermi surface sheet. We find a large anisotropy of Fermi velocities in MgB2 in difference to the nearly isotropic behavior in TaB2. We compare calculations performed within the relativistic non-full potential augmented-spherical-wave (ASW) scheme and the scalar-relativistic full potential local orbital (FPLO) scheme. A significant dependence for small cross sections on the bandstructure method is found. The comparison with the first available experimental de Haas-van Alphen-data by Yelland et al. (Ref. 19) shows deviations from the electronic structure calculated within both L(S)DA approaches although the cross section predicted by FPLO are closer to the experimental data. The elucidation of the relevant many-body effects beyond the standard LDA is considered as a possible key problem to understand the superconductivity in MgB2.

Metal insulator transition in TlSr2CoO5 from orbital degeneracy and spin disproportionation

To describe the metal insulator transition in the new oxide TlSr2CoO5 we investigate its electronic structure by LDA and model Hartree-Fock calculations. Within LDA we find a homogeneous metallic and ferromagnetic ground state, but when including the Coulomb interaction more explicitly within the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find an insulating state of lower energy with both spin and orbital order. We also interpret our results in terms of a simple model.

Spin-Polaron approach to the Fermi surface evolution in the normal state of cuprates

A semi-phenomenological approach to describe the evolution of Fermi surface (FS) and electronic structure with doping is presented which is based on the spin-fermion model. The doping is simulated by a frustration term in the spin Hamiltonian and the complex internal structure of the spin-polaron quasiparticle is taken into account by a superposition of spin-polaron states with different radii. By calculating the spectrum, the spectral weights and the FS we find a rather drastic change of the electronic structure with doping which explains many photoemission data, i.e. the isotropic band bottom and the remnant FS of undoped cuprates, the large FS and the extended saddle point of optimally doped compounds and the pseudogap in the underdoped samples.

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 - a revisit

We have investigated the lowest binding-energy electronic structure of the model cuprate Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our data from about 80 cleavages of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 single crystals give a comprehensive, self-consistent picture of the nature of the first electron-removal state in this model undoped CuO_2-plane cuprate. Firstly, we show a strong dependence on the polarization of the excitation light which is understandable in the context of the matrix element governing the photoemission process, which gives a state with the symmetry of a Zhang-Rice singlet. Secondly, the strong, oscillatory dependence of the intensity of the Zhang-Rice singlet on the exciting photon-energy is shown to be consistent with interference effects connected with the periodicity of the crystal structure in the crystallographic c-direction. Thirdly, we measured the dispersion of the first electron-removal states along G->(pi,pi) and G->(pi,0), the latter being controversial in the literature, and have shown that the data are best fitted using an extended t-J-model, and extract the relevant model parameters. An analysis of the spectral weight of the first ionization states for different excitation energies within the approach used by Leung et al. (Phys. Rev. B56, 6320 (1997)) results in a strongly photon-energy dependent ratio between the coherent and incoherent spectral weight. The possible reasons for this observation and its physical implications are discussed.

Spectral function of one hole in several one-dimensional spin arrangements

The spectral function of one hole in different magnetic states of the one-dimensional t-J model including three-site term and frustration $J^{\prime}$ is studied. In the strong coupling limit $J \to 0$ (corresponding to $U \to \infty$ of the Hubbard-model) a set of eigenoperators of the Liouvillian is found which allows to derive an exact expression for the one-particle Green's function that is also applicable at finite temperature and in an arbitrary magnetic state. The spinon dispersion of the pure t-J model with the ground-state of the Heisenberg model can be obtained by treating the corrections due to a small exchange term by means of the projection method. The spectral function for the special frustration $J^{\prime}=J/2$ with the Majumdar-Ghosh wave function is discussed in detail. Besides the projection method, a variational ansatz with the set of eigenoperators of the $t$-term is used. We find a symmetric spinon dispersion around the momentum $k=π/(2a)$ and a strong damping of the holon branch. Below the continuum a bound state is obtained with finite spectral weight and a very small separation from the continuum. Furthermore, the spectral function of the ideal paramagnetic case at a temperature $k_B T \gg J$ is discussed.

Weak antiferromagnetism due to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$

The antiferromagnetic insulating cuprate Ba$_3$Cu$_2$O$_4$Cl$_2$ contains folded CuO$_2$ chains with four magnetic copper ions ($S=1/2$) per unit cell. An underlying multiorbital Hubbard model is formulated and the superexchange theory is developed to derive an effective spin Hamiltonian for this cuprate. The resulting spin Hamiltonian involves a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term and a more weak symmetric anisotropic exchange term besides the isotropic exchange interaction. The corresponding Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vectors of each magnetic Cu-Cu bond in the chain reveal a well defined spatial order. Both, the superexchange theory and the complementary group theoretical consideration, lead to the same conclusion on the character of this order. The analysis of the ground-state magnetic properties of the derived model leads to the prediction of an additional noncollinear modulation of the antiferromagnetic structure. This weak antiferromagnetism is restricted to one of the Cu sublattices.

The electronic structure of CuSiO3 - a possible candidate for a new inorganic spin-Peierls compound ?

Electronic structure calculations are presented for the well-known CuGeO3 and the recently discovered isostructural CuSiO3 compounds. The magnitude of the dispersion in chain direction is considerably smaller for CuSiO3, whereas the main interchain couplings are rather similar in both compounds. Starting from extended one-band tight-binding models fitted to the bandstructures, the exchange integrals were estimated for both compounds in terms of a spatially anisotropic Heisenberg model. Remarkable frustrating second neighbor couplings are found both for intra- and inter-chain interactions. A magnetic moment of about 0.35 Bohr-magneton is predicted for CuSiO3 in the Neel state.
