Interactions of the deuteron with a hadronic medium

We investigate the interactions of the deuteron with light mesons during the hadronic phase in heavy-ion collisions. We treat the deuteron as a weakly bound state and employ the quasi-free approximation to describe the $d\pi$ interaction. The underlying elementary $N\pi$ amplitudes are described by a hybrid effective model, combining the non-resonant background from chiral perturbation theory with resonant contributions via Breit-Wigner parameterizations. These amplitudes are used to calculate the vacuum and thermally-averaged cross-sections for deuteron dissociation and production, namely, $d + \pi \rightarrow N + N' + \pi$ and the corresponding inverse reaction. We then use these cross sections in a rate equation to estimate the time evolution of the deuteron multiplicity. For the initial conditions we consider two models: the statistical hadronization model and the coalescence model, where the deuteron is treated as a hadronic molecule. Our findings suggest that the final deuteron yield does not retain a memory of its initial production mechanism.

The Four-Boson First-Excited State Near Two-Body Unitarity

Near two-body unitarity, the three-boson system is characterized by an approximate discrete scale invariance manifest in a geometric tower of bound states (the Efimov effect). In the absence of a strong four-body force, the four-boson system has two states associated with each Efimov state, one very nearly unstable, the other several times deeper. We study correlations between the excited- and ground-state properties, such as binding energies and radii, up to next-to-leading order in an effective field theory for short-range forces. We obtain the parameters in these correlations from similar correlations arising from existing precise calculations based on short-range potentials. We also derive correlations among excited-state properties that emerge from the proximity of the state to the break-up threshold into a boson and a three-boson bound state, using an effective field theory for "halo" states.

Few-neutron systems with the long-range Casimir-Polder force

In this work we present results of the long-range electromagnetic Casimir-Polder interactions between two neutrons, a neutron and a conducting wall, and a neutron between two walls. As input, we use the dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the neutron fitted to chiral EFT results up to the pion production threshold and at the onset of the Delta resonance. Our work can be relevant to the physics of confined ultracold neutrons inside bottles.

The Casimir-Polder interaction between two neutrons and possible relevance to tetraneutron states

We present a summary of our recent publication concerning the derivation of the extended Casimir-Polder dispersive interaction between two neutrons. Dynamical polarizations of the neutrons, recently derived within Chiral Effective Theory are used for the purpose. An account of the higher frequency/energy behavior of these entities related to the opening of one-pion production channel and the excitation of the $Δ$ resonance are taken into consideration in our derivation of the CP interaction. The neutron-neutron system in free space is treated in details so are the neutron-wall and the wall-neutron-wall systems. The case of tetraneutron (a 4 neutron system) in a resonant state is then briefly considered. The 4n CP interaction is evaluated to assess its potential relevance to the ongoing debate concerning the nature of the tetraneutron.

Short-distance RG-analysis of $X(3872)$ radiative decays

We present a renormalization-group analysis of the $X(3872)$ radiative decays into $J/ ψγ$ and $ψ(2S) γ$. We assume a $D\bar{D}^{*}$ molecule for the $X$ long-distance structure and parametrize its short-distance physics as contact interactions. Using effective field theory techniques and power-divergence subtraction scheme, we find that short- and long-distance physics are equally important in these decays. Our calculations set a lower limit to the corresponding decay widths, which can in principle be tested experimentally. Our results may be used as guide to build models for the $X$ short-distance.

Electric Dipole Moments of Light Nuclei From Chiral Effective Field Theory

We set up the framework for the calculation of electric dipole moments (EDMs) of light nuclei using the systematic expansion provided by chiral effective field theory (EFT). We take into account parity (P) and time-reversal (T) violation which, at the quark-gluon level, originates from the QCD vacuum angle and dimension-six operators capturing physics beyond the Standard Model. We argue that EDMs of light nuclei can be expressed in terms of six low-energy constants that appear in the P- and T-violating nuclear potential and electric current. As examples, we calculate the EDMs of the deuteron, the triton, and 3He in leading order in the EFT expansion.

A Model Study of Discrete Scale Invariance and Long-Range Interactions

We investigate the modification of discrete scale invariance in the bound state spectrum by long-range interactions. This problem is relevant for effective field theory descriptions of nuclear cluster states and manifestations of the Efimov effect in nuclei. As a model system, we choose a one dimensional inverse square potential supplemented with a long-range Coulomb interaction. We study the renormalization and bound-state spectrum of the system as a function of the Coulomb interaction strength. Our results indicate, that the counterterm required to renormalize the inverse square potential alone is sufficient to renormalize the full problem. However, the breaking of the discrete scale invariance through the Coulomb interaction leads to a modified bound state spectrum. The shallow bound states are strongly influenced by the Coulomb interaction while the deep bound states are dominated by the inverse square potential.

alpha-alpha Scattering in Halo Effective Field Theory

We study the two-alpha-particle (alpha-alpha) system in an Effective Field Theory (EFT) for halo-like systems. We propose a power counting that incorporates the subtle interplay of strong and electromagnetic forces leading to a narrow resonance at an energy of about 0.1 MeV. We investigate the EFT expansion in detail, and compare its results with existing low-energy alpha-alpha phase shifts and previously determined effective-range parameters. Good description of the data is obtained with a surprising amount of fine-tuning. This scenario can be viewed as an expansion around the limit where, when electromagnetic interactions are turned off, the Be-8 ground state is at threshold and exhibits conformal invariance. We also discuss possible extensions to systems with more than two alpha particles.

Renormalization of NN Interaction with Relativistic Chiral Two Pion Exchange

The renormalization of the NN interaction with the Chiral Two Pion Exchange Potential computed using relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory is considered. The short distance singularity reduces the number of counter-terms to about a half as those in the heavy-baryon expansion. Phase shifts and deuteron properties are evaluated and a general overall agreement is observed.

Relativistic $O(q^4)$ two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential: parametrized version

The chiral two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon interaction has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, but depends on low-energy constants, which may be extracted from fits to data. In order to facilitate this kind of application, we present here a parametrized version of our relativistic expansion of this component of the force to $O(q^4)$, performed recently.

Two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential:O(q^4) relativistic chiral expansion

We present a relativistic procedure for the chiral expansion of the two-pion exchange component of the $NN$ potential, which emphasizes the role of intermediate $πN$ subamplitudes. The relationship between power counting in $πN$ and $NN$ processes is discussed and results are expressed directly in terms of observable subthreshold coefficients. Interactions are determined by one- and two-loop diagrams, involving pions, nucleons, and other degrees of freedom, frozen into empirical subthreshold coefficients. The full evaluation of these diagrams produces amplitudes containing many different loop integrals. Their simplification by means of relations among these integrals leads to a set of intermediate results. Subsequent truncation to $O(q^4)$ yields the relativistic potential, which depends on six loop integrals, representing bubble, triangle, crossed box, and box diagrams. The bubble and triangle integrals are the same as in $πN$ scattering and we have shown that they also determine the chiral structures of box and crossed box integrals. Relativistic threshold effects make our results to be not equivalent with those of the heavy baryon approach. Performing a formal expansion of our results in inverse powers of the nucleon mass, even in regions where this expansion is not valid, we recover most of the standard heavy baryon results. The main differences are due to the Goldberger-Treiman discrepancy and terms of $O(q^3)$, possibly associated with the iteration of the one-pion exchange potential.

Three Body Force in Peripheral $Nα$ Scattering

The exchange of a single pion does not contribute to $Nα$ scattering, due to the isoscalar nature of the target. Therefore peripheral $Nα$ scattering may be used to probe existing models for the two-pion exchange component of the $NN$ potential. In a recent work we have considered this possibility using an effective $Nα$ interaction based on two-body forces only. In the present communication we discuss the role played by the two-pion exchange three-nucleon force, since its range is comparable to the two-pion exchange potential (TPEP).

Peripheral N$α$ Scattering: A Tool For Identifying The Two Pion Exchange Component Of The NN Potential

We study elastic N$α$ scattering and produce a quantitative correlation between the range of the effective potential and the energy of the system. This allows the identification of the waves and energies for which the scattering may be said to be peripheral. We then show that the corresponding phase shifts are sensitive to the tail of the NN potential, which is due to the exchange of two pions. However, the present uncertainties in the experimental phase shifts prevent the use of N$α$ scattering to discriminate the existing models for the NN interaction.
