Observation of quantum corrections to conductivity up to optical frequencies

It is well known that conductivity of disordered metals is suppressed in the limit of low frequencies and temperatures by quantum corrections. Although predicted by theory to exist up to much higher energies, such corrections have so far been experimentally proven only for $\lesssim$80 meV. Here, by a combination of transport and optical studies, we demonstrate that the quantum corrections are present in strongly disordered conductor MoC up to at least $\sim$4 eV, thereby extending the experimental window where such corrections were found by a factor of 50. The knowledge of both, the real and imaginary parts of conductivity, enables us to identify the microscopic parameters of the conduction electron fluid. We find that the conduction electron density of strongly disordered MoC is surprisingly high and we argue that this should be considered a generic property of metals on the verge of disorder-induced localization transition.

Possible vortex splitting in the cuprate superconductors

We propose that the observed splitting of the vortices in the cuprates into fractional vortices (partons) may be of static rather than of dynamic origin. This interpretation is backed by a study of a model with a dominant d-wave and subdominant s-wave pairing interaction. We find that the vortex may split into two partons, both of which carry one half of the magnetic flux quantum. The partons are hold together by a confining string along which the phase jumps approximately by pi and their equilibrium distance increases with lowering the energy difference epsilon between the pairing states. The partons become deconfined at the critical point where epsilon vanishes.

Phase diagrams of correlated electrons: systematic corrections to the mean field theory

Perturbative corrections to the mean field theory for particle-hole instabilities of interacting electron systems are computed within a scheme which is equivalent to the recently developed variational approach to the Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity. This enables an unbiased comparison of particle-particle and particle-hole instabilities within the same approximation scheme. A spin-rotation invariant formulation for the particle-hole instabilities in the triplet channel is developed. The method is applied to the phase diagram of the t-t' Hubbard model on the square lattice. At the Van Hove density, antiferromagnetic and d-wave Pomeranchuk phases are found to be stable close to half filling. However, the latter phase is confined to an extremely narrow interval of densities and away from the singular filling, d-wave superconducting instability dominates.

Chiral d+is superconducting state in the two dimensional t-t' Hubbard model

Applying the recently developed variational approach to Kohn-Luttinger superconductivity to the t-t' Hubbard model in two dimensions, we have found, for sizeable next-nearest neighbor hopping, an electron density controlled quantum phase transition between a d-wave superconducting state close to half filling and an s-wave superconductor at lower electron density. The transition occurs via an intermediate time reversal breaking d+is superconducting phase, which is characterized by nonvanishing chirality and density-current correlation. Our results suggest the possibility of a bulk time reversal symmetry breaking state in overdoped cuprates.

Josephson effect as a measure of quantum fluctuations in the cuprates

Quantitative analysis of the Josephson effect is shown to provide direct information about phase fluctuations in the superconducting banks. Applying the analysis to the cuprates, substantial quantum fluctuations between d-wave and s-wave pairing are found at low temperatures. A phenomenological model of such fluctuations is introduced and solved in a self-consistent single-site approximation. The cuprate parameters are argued to lie close to an exotic superconductor phase with condensation of electron quadruplets.

Kohn-Luttinger instability of the t-t' Hubbard model in two dimensions: variational approach

An effective Hamiltonian for the Kohn-Luttinger superconductor is constructed and solved in the BCS approximation. The method is applied to the t-t' Hubbard model in two dimensions with the following results: (i) The superconducting phase diagram at half filling is shown to provide a weak-coupling analog of the recently proposed spin liquid state in the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model. (ii) In the parameter region relevant for the cuprates we have found a nontrivial energy dependence of the gap function in the dominant d-wave pairing sector. The hot spot effect in the angular dependence of the superconducting gap is shown to be quite weak.

What does the Josephson effect tell us about the superconducting state of the cuprates?

We review the recent measurements of the current-phase relation in cuprate Josephson junctions. Special attention is paid to 45 degree grain boundary junctions and to c-axis junctions between YBCO and Nb. It is shown that the anomalous properties of such junctions which have been found experimentally (large second harmonic of the current phase relation, sign change of the first harmonic as a function of temperature) are qualitatively consistent with the d-wave symmetry of pairing in the cuprates. It is argued that in order to describe the data quantitatively, quantum fluctuations of the order parameter need to be taken into account. It is pointed out that the Josephson effect is an ideal tool for measuring the reduced phase stiffness in the cuprates.

Josephson effect in the cuprates: microscopic implications

In the tunnel limit, the current-phase relation of Josephson junctions can be expanded as $I(ϕ)=I_1\sinϕ+I_2\sin 2ϕ$. Standard BCS theory predicts that $I_1R_N\simΔ/e$ and $I_2/I_1\sim D$, where $R_N$ is the resistance of the junction in the normal state, $Δ$ is the superconducting gap, and $D\ll 1$ is the junction transparency. In the cuprates, the experimental value of $I_1R_N$ ($I_2/I_1$) is much smaller (larger) than the BCS prediction. We argue that both peculiarities of the cuprates can be explained by postulating quantum fluctuations of the pairing symmetry.

First-order transition between a small-gap semiconductor and a ferromagnetic metal in the isoelectronic alloys FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$

The contrasting groundstates of isoelectronic and isostructural FeSi and FeGe can be explained within an extended local density approximation scheme (LDA+U) by an appropriate choice of the onsite Coulomb repulsion, $U$ on the Fe-sites. A minimal two-band model with interband interactions allows us to obtain a phase diagram for the alloys FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$. Treating the model in a mean field approximation, gives a first order transition between a small-gap semiconductor and a ferromagnetic metal as a function of magnetic field, temperature, and concentration, $x$. Unusually the transition from metal to insulator is driven by broadening, not narrowing, the bands and it is the metallic state that shows magnetic order.

Observation of the second harmonic in superconducting current-phase relation of Nb/Au/(001)YBa2Cu3Ox heterojunctions

The superconducting current-phase relation (CPR) of Nb/Au/(001)YBa2Cu3Ox heterojunctions prepared on epitaxial c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3Ox thin films has been measured in a single-junction interferometer. For the first time, the second harmonic of the CPR of such junctions has been observed. The appearance of the second harmonic and the relative sign of the first and second harmonics of the CPR can be explained assuming, that the macroscopic pairing symmetry of our YBa2Cu3Ox thin films is of the d+s type

Degenerate ground state in a mesoscopic YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junction

We have measured the current-phase relationship (CPR) of symmetric 45 degree YBaCuO grain boundary Josephson junctions. Substantial deviations of the CPR from conventional tunnel-junction behavior have been observed: (i) The critical current exhibits, as a function of temperature T, a local minimum at a temperature T*. (ii) At T approximately equal to T*, the first harmonic of the CPR changes sign. (iii) For T<T*, the second harmonic of the CPR is comparable to the first harmonic, and (iv) the ground state of the junction becomes degenerate. The results are in good agreement with a microscopic model of Josephson junctions between d-wave superconductors.

Hall effect in the cuprates: the role of forward scattering on impurities

We solve the Boltzmann equation for electrons moving in a two-dimensional plane of square symmetry in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. We assume that there are two sources of scattering: a large momentum-independent scattering on a collective mode of the electron system, and a smaller momentum-dependent forward scattering on impurities. We show that the effect of impurities on the longitudinal and Hall conductivities is of the same order of magnitude.

Anomalous Periodicity of the Current-Phase Relationship of Grain-Boundary Josephson Junctions in High-Tc Superconductors

The current-phase relation (CPR) for asymmetric 45 degree Josephson junctions between two d-wave superconductors has been predicted to exhibit an anomalous periodicity. We have used the single-junction interferometer to investigate the CPR for this kind of junctions in YBCO thin films. Half-fluxon periodicity has been experimentally found, providing a novel source of evidence for the d-wave symmetry of the pairing state of the cuprates.

Ferromagnetism in the two dimensional t-t' Hubbard model at the Van Hove density

Using an improved version of the projection quantum Monte Carlo technique, we study the square-lattice Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping t and next-nearest-neighbor hopping t', by simulation of lattices with up to 20 X 20 sites. For a given R=2t'/t, we consider that filling which leads to a singular density of states of the noninteracting problem. For repulsive interactions, we find an itinerant ferromagnet (antiferromagnet) for R=0.94 (R=0.2). This is consistent with the prediction of the T-matrix approximation, which sums the most singular set of diagrams.

Resistivity as a function of temperature for models with hot spots on the Fermi surface.

We calculate the resistivity $ρ$ as a function of temperature $T$ for two models currently discussed in connection with high temperature superconductivity: nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids and models with van Hove singularities on the Fermi surface. The resistivity is calculated semiclassicaly by making use of a Boltzmann equation which is formulated as a variational problem. For the model of nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids we construct a better variational solution compared to the standard one and we find a new energy scale for the crossover to the $ρ\propto T^2$ behavior at low temperatures. This energy scale is finite even when the spin-fluctuations are assumed to be critical. The effect of additional impurity scattering is discussed. For the model with van Hove singularities a standard ansatz for the Boltzmann equation is sufficient to show that although the quasiparticle lifetime is anomalously short, the resistivity $ρ\propto T^2\ln(1/T)$.

Luttinger Liquid in a Solvable 2-Dimensional Model

We consider spinless electrons in two dimensions with the bare spectrum $ε({\bf p})=|p_x|+|p_y|$. In momentum space, the interactions among electrons have a finite range $q_0$, which is small compared to the Fermi momentum. A golden rule calculation of the electron lifetime indicates a breakdown of the Landau Fermi liquid in the model. At the one-loop level of perturbation theory, we show that the density wave and the superconducting instabilities cancel each other and there is no symmetry breaking. We solve the model via bosonization; the excitation spectrum is found to consist of gapless bosonic modes as in a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid.
