Evidence for the Suppressed Decay B- -> DK-, D -> K+pi-

The suppressed decay chain B- -> DK-, D -> K+pi-, where D indicates a anti-D0 or D0 state, provides important information on the CP-violating angle phi_3. We measure the ratio R_{DK} of the decay rates to the favored mode B- -> DK-, D -> K-pi+ to be R_{DK} = [1.63^{+0.44}_{-0.41}(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.13}(syst)] x 10^{-2}, which indicates the first evidence of the signal with a significance of 4.1sigma. We also measure the asymmetry A_{DK} between the charge-conjugate decays to be A_{DK} = -0.39^{+0.26}_{-0.28}(stat)^{+0.04}_{-0.03}(syst). The results are based on the full 772 x 10^6 B anti-B pair data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector.

Measurement of the decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ and determination of $|V_{ub}|$

We present a measurement of the charmless semileptonic decay $B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν$ using a data sample containing 657$\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider operating near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We determine the total branching fraction of the decay, $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toπ^-\ell^+ν)=(1.49\pm 0.04{(\mathrm{stat})}\pm 0.07{(\mathrm{syst})})\times 10^{-4}$. We also report a new precise measurement of the differential decay rate, and extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ using model-independent and -dependent approaches. From a simultaneous fit to the measured differential decay rate and lattice QCD results, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.43\pm 0.33)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- using e+e- collisions and a determination of the Bs-Bsbar width difference ΔΓ_s

We have made the first observation of Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 23.6 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0_s\ra D^+_s D^-_s) = (1.0\,^{+0.4}_{-0.3}\,^{+0.3}_{-0.2})%, B(B^0_s\ra D^{*\pm}_s D^{\mp}_s) = (2.8\,^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\,\pm 0.7)%, and B(B^0_s\ra D^{*+}_s D^{*-}_s) = (3.1\,^{+1.2}_{-1.0}\,\pm 0.8)%; the sum is B(B^0_s\ra D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s) = (6.9\,^{+1.5}_{-1.3}\,\pm 1.9)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction determines the ratio ΔΓ_s/cos(ϕ), where ΔΓ_s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-Bsbar mass eigenstates, and ϕis a CP-violating weak phase. Taking CP violation to be negligibly small, we obtain ΔΓ_s/Γ_s = 0.147^{+0.036}_{-0.030}(stat.)^{+0.044}_{-0.042}(syst.), where Γ_s is the mean decay width.

Measurement of CP violating asymmetries in B^0 -> K^+K^- K^0_S decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach

We report a measurement of $CP$ violating asymmetries in $B^0(\overline{B}^0) \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays with a time-dependent Dalitz approach. This analysis is based on a data sample of $657\times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. As the result of an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the selected candidates, the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters, $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ and ${\cal A}_{CP}$ are obtained for $B^0 \to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$, $B^0 \to f_0(980) K^0_S$ and other $B^0 \to K^+ K^- K^0_S$ decays. We find four solutions that describe the data. There are \{eqnarray*} ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (32.2 \pm 9.0 \pm 2.6 \pm 1.4)^{\circ}; ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (26.2 \pm 8.8 \pm 2.7 \pm 1.2)^{\circ};\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (27.3 \pm 8.6 \pm 2.8 \pm 1.3)^{\circ}\; {\rm and}\\ ϕ_1^{\rm eff}(B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S) & = & (24.3 \pm 8.0 \pm 2.9 \pm 5.2)^{\circ}.{eqnarray*}\ The values for the $CP$ violating phase in $B^0\to ϕ(1020) K^0_S$ are similar but other properties of the Dalitz plot are quite different for the four solutions. These four solutions have consistent $ϕ^{\rm eff}_1$ values for all three $B$ meson decay channels and none of them deviates significantly from the values measured in $B \to (c\bar{c}) K^0$ decays with the currently available statistics. In addition, we find no significant direct $CP$ violation.

First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

The December 2009 gamma-ray flare of 3C 454.3: the multifrequency campaign

During the month of December, 2009 the blazar 3C 454.3 became the brightest gamma-ray source in the sky, reaching a peak flux F ~2000E-8 ph/cm2/s for E > 100 MeV. Starting in November, 2009 intensive multifrequency campaigns monitored the 3C 454 gamma-ray outburst. Here we report the results of a 2-month campaign involving AGILE, INTEGRAL, Swift/XRT, Swift/BAT, RossiXTE for the high-energy observations, and Swift/UVOT, KANATA, GRT, REM for the near-IR/optical/UV data. The GASP/WEBT provided radio and additional optical data. We detected a long-term active emission phase lasting ~1 month at all wavelengths: in the gamma-ray band, peak emission was reached on December 2-3, 2009. Remarkably, this gamma-ray super-flare was not accompanied by correspondingly intense emission in the optical/UV band that reached a level substantially lower than the previous observations in 2007-2008. The lack of strong simultaneous optical brightening during the super-flare and the determination of the broad-band spectral evolution severely constrain the theoretical modelling. We find that the pre- and post-flare broad-band behavior can be explained by a one-zone model involving SSC plus external Compton emission from an accretion disk and a broad-line region. However, the spectra of the Dec. 2-3, 2009 super-flare and of the secondary peak emission on Dec. 9, 2009 cannot be satisfactorily modelled by a simple one-zone model. An additional particle component is most likely active during these states.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super $B$ factory, an asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider with a design luminosity of $8 \times 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, which is around 50 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented.

The Spectral Energy Distribution of Fermi bright blazars

(Abridged) We have conducted a detailed investigation of the broad-band spectral properties of the γ-ray selected blazars of the Fermi LAT Bright AGN Sample (LBAS). By combining our accurately estimated Fermi gamma-ray spectra with Swift, radio, infra-red, optical and other hard X-ray/gamma-ray data, collected within three months of the LBAS data taking period, we were able to assemble high-quality and quasi-simultaneous Spectral Energy Distributions (SED) for 48 LBAS blazars.The SED of these gamma-ray sources is similar to that of blazars discovered at other wavelengths, clearly showing, in the usual Log $ν$ - Log $ν$ F$_ν$ representation, the typical broad-band spectral signatures normally attributed to a combination of low-energy synchrotron radiation followed by inverse Compton emission of one or more components. We have used these SEDs to characterize the peak intensity of both the low and the high-energy components. The results have been used to derive empirical relationships that estimate the position of the two peaks from the broad-band colors (i.e. the radio to optical and optical to X-ray spectral slopes) and from the gamma-ray spectral index. Our data show that the synchrotron peak frequency $ν_p^S$ is positioned between 10$^{12.5}$ and 10$^{14.5}$ Hz in broad-lined FSRQs and between $10^{13}$ and $10^{17}$ Hz in featureless BL Lacertae objects.We find that the gamma-ray spectral slope is strongly correlated with the synchrotron peak energy and with the X-ray spectral index, as expected at first order in synchrotron - inverse Compton scenarios. However, simple homogeneous, one-zone, Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) models cannot explain most of our SEDs, especially in the case of FSRQs and low energy peaked (LBL) BL Lacs. (...)

Early phase observations of extremely luminous Type Ia Supernova 2009dc

We present early phase observations in optical and near-infrared wavelengths for the extremely luminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2009dc. The decline rate of the light curve is $Δm_{15}(B)=0.65\pm 0.03$, which is one of the slowest among SNe Ia. The peak $V$-band absolute magnitude is $M_{V}=-19.90\pm 0.15$ mag even if the host extinction is $A_{V}=0$ mag. It reaches $M_{V}=-20.19\pm 0.19$ mag for the host extinction of $A_{V}=0.29$ mag as inferred from the observed Na {\sc i} D line absorption in the host. Our $JHK_{s}$-band photometry shows that the SN is one of the most luminous SNe Ia also in near-infrared wavelengths. These results indicate that SN 2009dc belongs to the most luminous class of SNe Ia, like SN 2003fg and SN 2006gz. We estimate the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass of $1.2\pm 0.3$ $\Msun$ for no host extinction case (or 1.6$\pm$ 0.4 M$_{\odot}$ for the host extinction of $A_{V}=0.29$ mag). The C {\sc ii} $λ$6580 absorption line keeps visible until a week after maximum, which diminished in SN 2006gz before its maximum brightness. The line velocity of Si {\sc ii} $λ$6355 is about 8000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum, being considerably slower than that of SN 2006gz, while comparable to that of SN 2003fg. The velocity of the C {\sc ii} line is almost comparable to that of the Si {\sc ii}. The presence of the carbon line suggests that thick unburned C+O layers remain after the explosion. SN 2009dc is a plausible candidate of the super-Chandrasekhar mass SNe Ia.

Studies of CP violation in B->J/psi K* decays

CP violation in $B\to J/ψK^*$ decays is studied using an angular analysis in a data sample of 253 fb$^{-1}$ recorded with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The flavor separated measurements of the decay amplitudes indicate no evidence for direct CP violation. T-odd CP violation is studied using the asymmetries in triple product correlations, and the results are consistent with the Standard Model null predictions. The time-dependent angular analysis gives the following values of CP violating parameters: $\sin 2ϕ_1 = 0.24 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.05$ and $\cos 2ϕ_1 = 0.56 \pm 0.79 \pm 0.11$.

The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented. The sensitivity studies are a part of the activities associated with the preparation of a Letter of Intent for SuperKEKB, which has been submitted recently.

Computing System for the Belle Experiment

We describe the offline computing system of the Belle experiment, consisting of a computing farm with one thousand IA-32 CPUs. Up to now, the Belle experiment has accumulated more than 120 fb$^{-1}$ of data, which is the world largest $B\bar{B}$ sample at the $Υ(4S)$ energy. The data have to be processed with a single version of reconstruction software and calibration constants to perform precise measurements of $B$ meson decays. In addition, Monte Carlo samples three times larger than the real beam data are generated. To fullfill our computing needs, we have constructed the computing system with 90(300) quad(dual) CPU PC servers from multiple vendors as a central processing system. The details of this computing system and performance of data processing with the current model are presented.

The Data Acquisition System Based on PMC Bus

High energy physics experiments in KEK/Japan rush into over KHz trigger stage. Thus, we need a successor of the data acquisition(DAQ) system that replaces the CAMAC or FASTBUS systems. To meet these needs, we have developed a DAQ system which includes a crate, base-board modules, daughter cards for front-end A/D or T/D conversion, and back-end communication cards for data transfer and timing control. The size of the crate is for the 9U Euro-cards with the standard VME32 bus and extension connectors for power supply. The base-board comprises of a local bus with the sequencer connected to the front-end daughter cards via event buffering FIFOs, and the standard PMC (PCI mezzanine card) bus to be set a PMC processor unit to reduce data size from the front-end daughter cards. A data transfer module, which is connected to the event building system, and a trigger control unit, which communicates with the central timing controller are installed on the back-end communication card connected to the rear end of the base-board. We describe the design of this DAQ system and evaluate the performance of it.

Development of a PCI Based Data Acquisition Platform for High Intensity Accelerator Experiments

Data logging at an upgraded KEKB accelerator or the J-PARC facility, currently under commission, requires a high density data acquisition platform with integrated data reduction CPUs. To follow market trends, we have developed a DAQ platform based on the PCI bus, a choice which permits a fast DAQ and a long expected lifetime of the system. The platform is a 9U-VME motherboard consisting of four slots for signal digitization modules, readout FIFOs for data buffering, and three PMC slots, on one of which resides a data reduction CPU. We have performed long term and thermal stability tests. The readout speed on the platform has been measured up to 125 MB/s in DMA mode.

Measurement of inclusive particle spectra and test of MLLA prediction in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$=58GeV

Inclusive momentum spectra are measured for all charged particles and for each of $π^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^0/\bar{K^0}$, and $p/\bar{p}$ in hadronic events produced via $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}$=58GeV . The measured spectra are compared with QCD predictions based on the modified leading log approximation(MLLA). The MLLA model reproduces the measured spectra well. The energy dependence of the peak positions of the spectra is studied by comparing the measurements with those at other energies. The energy dependence is also well described by the MLLA model.
