The nature of the magnetic and structural phase transitions in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We present the results of an investigation of both the magnetic and structural phase transitions in a high quality single crystalline sample of the undoped, iron pnictide compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Both phase transitions are characterized via neutron diffraction measurements which reveal simultaneous, continuous magnetic and structural orderings with no evidence of hysteresis, consistent with a single second order phase transition. The onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order can be described by a simple power law dependence $ϕ(T)^2\propto(1-\frac{T}{T_N})^{2β}$ with $β=0.103\pm0.018$; a value near the $β=0.125$ expected for a two-dimensional Ising system. Biquadratic coupling between the structural and magnetic order parameters is also inferred along with evidence of three-dimensional critical scattering in this system.

Core Level and Valence Band Study of LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs

Using angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy we have probed the novel LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs superconductor over a wide range of photon energies and temperatures. We have provided the first full characterization of the orbital character of the VB DOS and of the magnitude of the d-p hybridization energy. Finally, we have identified two characteristic temperatures: 90K where a pseudogap-like feature appears to close and 120K where a sudden change in the DOS near E$_F$ occurs. We associate these phenomena with the SDW magnetic ordering and the structural transition seen in the parent compound, respectively. These results suggest the important role of electron correlation, spin physics and structural distortion in the physics of Fe-based superconductors.

Spin dynamics near the critical doping in weakly-superconducting underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.35 (Tc=18K)

Using neutron scattering we have determined the magnetic structure and fluctuations in the YBa2Cu3O6.35 superconductor (Tc=18 K). The long-range ordered collinear spins of the insulating antiferromagnet are replaced by a commensurate central mode arising from slow, isotropically polarized, short-range spin correlations. The inelastic spectrum up to 30 meV is broad in wave vector and commensurate. In contrast to the the resonance peak of higher Tc superconductors, the spins exhibit a single overdamped spectrum whose rate of relaxation decreases on cooling and saturates at 5 meV below 50 K. As the relaxation rate saturates the quasi-static spin correlations grow and become resolution limited in energy. The spin susceptibility at high temperatures illustrates that the dominant energy scale is set by the temperature. At low temperatures, the scale length is geometric and not linked by velocity to dynamic widths. There is no observable suppression of the spin fluctuations or central mode upon the onset of superconductivity. The spins respond not to coherent charge pairs but to hole doping allowing coexistence of glassy short range spin order with superconductivity. Since the physics of the weakly superconducting system YBCO6.35 must connect continuously with that in more strongly superconducting YBCO6.5, we find that neither incommensurate stripe-like spin modulations nor a well-defined neutron spin resonance are essential for the onset with doping of pairing in a high temperature cuprate superconductor.

High resolution x-ray study of nematic-smectic-A and Smectic-A-reentrant nematic transitions in liquid crystal+aerosil gels

We have studied the effects of quenched random disorder created by dispersed aerosil nanoparticle gels on the nematic to smectic-A (N-SmA) and smectic-A to reentrant nematic (SmA- RN) phase transitions of thermotropic liquid crystal mixtures of 6OCB (hexyloxycyanobiphenyl) and 8OCB (octyloxycyanobiphenyl). These effects are probed using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. We find that the reentrant characteristics of the system are largely unchanged by the presence of the aerosil gel network. By comparing measurements of the smectic static structure amplitude for this 8OCB-6OCB+aerosil system with those for butyloxybenzilidene-octylaniline (4O.8)+aerosil gels, we find that the short-range smectic order in the smectic-A phase is significantly weaker in the reentrant system. This result is consistent with the behavior seen in pure 8OCB-6OCB mixtures. The strength of the smectic ordering decreases progressively as the 6OCB concentration is increased. Detailed line shape analysis shows that the high- and low-temperature nematic phases (N and RN) are similar to each other.

Observation of a 500meV Collective Mode in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$

Utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we report a previously unobserved mode in the excitation spectrum of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at 500 meV. The mode is peaked around the ($π$,0) point in reciprocal space and is observed to soften, and broaden, away from this point. Samples with x=0, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.17 were studied. The new mode is found to be rapidly suppressed with increasing Sr content and is absent at $x$=0.17, where it is replaced by a continuum of excitations. The peak is only observed when the incident x-ray polarization is normal to the CuO planes and is also present in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. We suggest possible explanations for this excitation.

Charge-transfer exciton in La2CuO4 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La2CuO4. A number of spectral features are identified that were not clearly visible in earlier lower-resolution data. The momentum dependence of the spectral weight and the dispersion of the lowest energy excitation across the insulating gap have been measured in detail. The temperature dependence of the spectral features was also examined. The observed charge transfer edge shift, along with the low dispersion of the first charge transfer excitation are attributed to the lattice motion being coupled to the electronic system. In addition, we observe a dispersionless feature at 1.8 eV, which is associated with a d-d crystal field excitation.

Disappearance of antiferromagnetic spin excitations in over-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Magnetic excitations in the energy range up to 100 meV are studied for over-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x=0.25$ and 0.30, using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. Comparison of spectra integrated over the width of an antiferromagnetic Brillouin zone demonstrates that the magnetic scattering at intermediate energies, $20 \lesssim ω\lesssim 100$ meV, progressively decreases with over-doping. This strongly suggests that the magnetism is not related to Fermi surface nesting, but rather is associated with a decreasing volume fraction of (probably fluctuating) antiferromagnetic bubbles.

Evidence for decay of spin-waves above the pseudogap in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.35

The magnetic spectrum at high-energies in heavily underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.35}$ (T$_{c}$=18 K) has been determined throughout the Brillouin zone. At low-energy the scattering forms a cone of spin excitations emanating from the antiferromagnetic (0.5, 0.5) wave vector with an acoustic velocity similar to that of insulating cuprates. At high energy transfers, below the maximum energy of 270 meV at (0.5, 0), we observe zone boundary dispersion much larger and spectral weight loss more extensive than in insulating antiferromagnets. Moreover we report phenomena not found in insulators, an overall lowering of the zone-boundary energies and a large damping of $\sim$ 100 meV of the spin excitations at high-energies. The energy above which the damping occurs coincides approximately with the gap determined from transport measurements. We propose that as the energy is raised the spin excitations encounter an extra channel of decay into particle-hole pairs of a continuum that we associate with the pseudogap.

Quantum phase transitions in magnetism and superconductivity: emergent spin topology seen with neutrons

Magnetic spins and charges interact strongly in high-temperature superconductors. New physics emerges as layers of copper oxide are tuned towards the boundary of the superconducting phase. As the pseudogap increases the characteristic spin excitation energy decreases. We show that our well-annealed YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO6+x) single crystals are orthorhombic and superconducting but not antiferromagnetically ordered. Near the critical concentration for superconductivity for x = 0.35 the spins fluctuate on two energy scales, one a relaxational spin response at ~2 meV and the other a slow central mode that is resolution-limited in energy (<0.08 meV) but broad in momentum. The gradual formation on cooling of a central mode over a range of momenta suggests that the spin ground state from which coherent superconducting pairing emerges may be quantum disordered. We show that YBCO6.35 adopts a homogeneous state that consists of highly-organized frozen sub-critical three-dimensional spin correlations. The continuous spin evolution indicates that a single quantum state occurs in contrast to claims from site-based probes that lightly doped YBCO undergoes a transition to antiferromagnetic Bragg order followed by a sharp transition to a cluster glass phase. For x = 0.35, where Tc = 18 K is reduced to 1/5 of Tcmax, the spin ground state is reached without a sharp transition and consists of short correlations extending over only 8 Angstrom between cells and 42 Angstrom within the planes. Polarized neutrons show the angular spin distribution to be isotropic unlike the AF insulator. Since moment is conserved we interpret this as evidence for hole-induced spin rotations rather than decay.

Magnetic neutron scattering in hole doped cuprate superconductors

A review is presented of the static and dynamic magnetic properties of hole-doped cuprate superconductors measured with neutron scattering. A wide variety of experiments are described with emphasis on the monolayer La_{2-x}(Sr,Ba)_{x}CuO_{4} and bilayer YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x} cuprates. At zero hole doping, both classes of materials are antiferromagnetic insulators with large superexchange constants of J > 100 meV. For increasing hole doping, the cuprates become superconducting at a critical hole concentration of x_{c}=0.055. The development of new instrumentation at neutron beam sources coupled with the improvement in materials has lead to a better understanding of these materials and the underlying spin dynamics over a broad range of hole dopings. We will describe how the spin dispersion changes across the insulating to superconducting boundary as well as the static magnetic properties which are directly coupled with the superconductivity. Experiments directly probing the competing magnetic and superconducting order parameters involving magnetic fields, impurity doping, and structural order will be examined. Correlations between superconductivity and magnetism will also be discussed.

Damped Soft Phonons and Diffuse Scattering in 40PMN-60PT

Using neutron elastic and inelastic scattering and high-energy x-ray diffraction, we present a comparison of 40% Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-60% PbTiO$_{3}$ (PMN-60PT) with pure Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) and PbTiO$_{3}$ (PT). We measure the structural properties of PMN-60PT to be identical to pure PT, however, the lattice dynamics are exactly that previously found in relaxors PMN and PZN. PMN-60PT displays a well-defined macroscopic structural transition from a cubic to tetragonal unit cell at 550 K. The diffuse scattering is shown to be weak indicating that the structural distortion is long-range in PMN-60PT and short-range polar correlations (polar nanoregions) are not present. Even though polar nanoregions are absent, the soft optic mode is short-lived for wavevectors near the zone-centre. Therefore, PMN-60PT displays the same waterfall effect as prototypical relaxors PMN and PZN. We conclude that it is random fields resulting from the intrinsic chemical disorder which is the reason for the broad transverse optic mode observed in PMN and PMN-60PT near the zone centre and not due to the formation of short-ranged polar correlations. Through our comparison of PMN, PMN-60PT, and pure PT, we interpret the dynamic and static properties of the PMN-xPT system in terms of a random field model in which the cubic anisotropy term dominates with increasing doping of PbTiO$_{3}$.

Neutron Scattering and magnetization studies of Ba$_2$Cu$_{2.95}$Co$_{0.05}$O$_4$Cl$_2$: A decorated two-dimensional antiferromagnet

Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$ has two inter-penetrating square Cu sublattices, one with square root 2 times the in-plane spacing of the other. Isotropic magnetic interactions between the two sublattices are completely frustrated. Quantum fluctuations resolve the intrinsic degeneracy in the ordering direction of the more weakly coupled sublattice in favor of collinear ordering. We present neutron scattering and magnetization studies of the magnetic structure when the Cu ions are substituted with Co. The Co spins create new magnetic interactions between the two sublattices. The ordering behavior of both Cu sublattices is retained largely unmodified. Between the phase transitions of the two sublattices spin-glass behavior is observed. Magnetization results show a strong enhancement to the ferromagnetic aspect of the magnetic structure. The combination of glassy behavior and large moments strongly suggest that the Co moments induce the formation of local canted states.

Central mode and spin confinement near the boundary of the superconducting phase in YBa2Cu3O6.353 (Tc=18 K)

We have mapped the neutron scattering spin spectrum at low-energies in YBa2Cu3O6.353 (Tc=18 K) where the doping ~0.06 is near the critical value (pc=0.055) for superconductivity. No coexistence with long range ordered antiferromagnetism is found. The spins fluctuate on two energy scales, one a damped spin response with a ~2 meV relaxation rate and the other a central mode with a relaxation rate that slows to less than 0.08 meV below Tc. The spectrum mirrors that of a soft mode driving a central mode. Extremely short correlation lengths, 42+-5 Angstrom in-plane and 8+-2 Angstrom along the c direction, and isotropic spin orientations for the central mode indicate that the correlations are subcritical with respect to any second order transition to Neel order. The dynamics follows a model where damped spin fluctuations are coupled to the slow fluctuations of regions with correlations shortened by the hole doping.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering study of overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the copper K absorption edge has been performed for heavily overdoped samples of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with $x= 0.25$ and 0.30. We have observed the charge transfer and molecular-orbital excitations which exhibit resonances at incident energies of $E_i= 8.992$ and 8.998 keV, respectively. From a comparison with previous results on undoped and optimally-doped samples, we determine that the charge-transfer excitation energy increases monotonically as doping increases. In addition, the $E_i$-dependences of the RIXS spectral weight and absorption spectrum exhibit no clear peak at $E_i = 8.998$ keV in contrast to results in the underdoped samples. The low-energy ($\leq 3$ eV) continuum excitation intensity has been studied utilizing the high energy resolution of 0.13 eV (FWHM). A comparison of the RIXS profiles at $(π~0)$ and $(π~π)$ indicates that the continuum intensity exists even at $(π~π)$ in the overdoped samples, whereas it has been reported only at $(0 ~0)$ and $(π~0)$ for the $x=0.17$ sample. Furthermore, we also found an additional excitation on top of the continuum intensity at the $(π~π)$ and $(π~0)$ positions.

Calorimetric study of the nematic to smectic-\textit{A} and smectic-\textit{A} to smectic-\textit{C} phase transitions in liquid-crystal+aerosil dispersions

A high-resolution calorimetric study has been carried out on nano-colloidal dispersions of aerosils in the liquid crystal 4-\textit{n}-pentylphenylthiol-4'-\textit{n}-octyloxybenzoate ($\bar{8}$S5) as a function of aerosil concentration and temperature spanning the smectic-\textit{C} to nematic phases. Over this temperature range, this liquid crystal possesses two continuous XY phase transitions: a fluctuation dominated nematic to smectic-\textit{A} transition with $α\approx α_{XY} = -0.013$ and a mean-field smectic-\textit{A} to smectic-\textit{C} transition. The effective critical character of the \textit{N}-Sm\textit{A} transition remains unchanged over the entire range of introduced quenched random disorder while the peak height and enthalpy can be well described by considering a cut-off length scale to the quasi-critical fluctuations. The robust nature of the \textit{N}-Sm\textit{A} transition in this system contrasts with cyanobiphenyl-aerosil systems and may be due to the mesogens being non-polar and having a long nematic range. The character of the Sm\textit{A}-Sm\textit{C} transition changes gradually with increasing disorder but remains mean-field-like. The heat capacity maximum at the Sm\textit{A}-Sm\textit{C} transition scales as $ρ_S^{-0.5}$ with an apparent evolution from tricritical to a simple mean-field step behavior. These results may be generally understood as a stiffening of the liquid crystal (both the nematic elasticity as well as the smectic layer compression modulus $B$) with silica density.

Magnetic properties of the overdoped superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ with and without Zn impurities

The magnetic properties of the Zn-substituted overdoped high-$T_c$ superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_{y}$O$_{4}$ have been studied by magnetization measurements and neutron scattering. Magnetization measurements reveal that for Zn-free samples with $x \geq 0.22$ a Curie term is induced in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility implying the existence of local paramagnetic moments. The induced Curie constant corresponds to a moment of 0.5 $μ_B$ per additional Sr$^{2+}$ ion that exceeds $x=0.22$. Zn-substitution in the overdoped \lsco also induces a Curie term that corresponds to 1.2 $μ_B$ per Zn$^{2+}$ ion, simultaneously suppressing $T_c$. The relationship between $T_c$ and the magnitude of the Curie term for Zn-free \lsco with $x \geq 0.22$ and for Zn-substituted \lsco with $x = 0.22$ are closely similar. This signifies a general competitive relationship between the superconductivity and the induced paramagnetic moment. Neutron scattering measurements show that Zn-substitution in overdoped \lsco anomalously enhances the inelastic magnetic scattering spectra around the $(π, π)$ position, peaking at $ω\sim 7$ meV. These facts are discussed on the basis of a "swiss-cheese" model of Zn-substituted systems as well as a microscopic phase separation scenario in the overdoped region indicated by muon-spin-relaxation measurements.

Field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in underdoped La(2-x)SrxCuO4

We report the observation of a magnetic-field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped La(2-x)SrxCuO4 with x=0.144. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron scattering. Our results allow us to constrain the location of a quantum critical point on the phase diagram.

From incommensurate to dispersive spin-fluctuations: The high-energy inelastic spectrum in superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.5

We have investigated the spin fluctuations at energy transfers up to ~110 meV, well above the resonance energy (33 meV) in the YBa2Cu3O6.5 ortho-II superconductor using neutron time-of-flight and triple-axis techniques. The spectrum at high energies differs from the low-energy incommensurate modulations previously reported where the incommensurate wave vector is largely independent of energy. Well above the resonance the peak of the spin response lies at wave vectors that increase with energy. Within error the excitations at all energies above the resonance are best described by a ring around the (pi, pi) position. The isotropic wave-vector pattern differs from a recently reported square pattern in different but related systems. The spin spectral weight at high-energies is similar to that in the insulator but the characteristic velocity is ~40% lower. We introduce a method of extracting the acoustic and optic weights at all energies from time-of-flight data. We find that the optic spectral weight extends to surprisingly low-energies of ~25 meV, and infer that the bilayer spin correlations weaken with increase in hole doping. When the low-energy optic excitations are taken into account we measure the total integrated weight around (pi, pi), for energies below 120 meV, to agree with that expected from the insulator. As a qualitative guide, we compare spin-wave calculations for an ordered and a disordered stripe model and describe the inadequacy of this and other stripe models for the high-energy fluctuations.
