Spin ice behavior in Dy2Sn2-xSbxO7+x/2 and Dy2NbScO7

We report the magnetic and thermal properties of Dy2Sn2-xSbxO7+x/2, x = 0, 0.25, and 0.5, and Dy2NbScO7. We find evidence for Ising-like single ion ground states in the Dy2Sn2-xSbxO7+x/2 materials. These materials possess nearly the same zero point entropy as the canonical spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7, strongly suggesting that they have spin ice states at low temperatures. We also observe a somewhat reduced zero point entropy in Dy2NbScO7, which is possibly associated with the higher level of cation disorder. The ice-like states in these materials with cation disorder on the B-sites of the pyrochlore lattice provide new evidence for the robust nature of spin ice behavior in the presence of disorder.

Non-monotonic zero point entropy in diluted spin ice

Water ice and spin ice are important model systems in which theory can directly account for zero point entropy associated with quenched configurational disorder. Spin ice differs from water ice in the important respect that its fundamental constituents, the spins of the magnetic ions, can be removed through replacement with non-magnetic ions while keeping the lattice structure intact. In order to investigate the interplay of frustrated interactions and quenched disorder, we have performed systematic heat capacity measurements on spin ice materials which have been thus diluted up to 90%. Investigations of both Ho and Dy spin ices reveal that the zero point entropy depends non-monotonically on dilution and approaches the value of Rln2 in the limit of high dilution. The data are in good agreement with a generalization of Pauling's theory for the entropy of ice.

Anomalous metallic state of Cu$_{0.07}$TiSe$_2$: an optical spectroscopy study

We report an optical spectroscopy study on the newly discovered superconductor Cu$_{0.07}$TiSe$_2$. Consistent with the development from a semimetal or semiconductor with a very small indirect energy gap upon doping TiSe$_2$, it is found that the compound has a low carrier density. Most remarkably, the study reveals a substantial shift of the "screened" plasma edge in reflectance towards high energy with decreasing temperature. This phenomenon, rarely seen in metals, indicates either a sizeable increase of the conducting carrier concentration or/and a decrease of the effective mass of carriers with reducing temperature. We attribute the shift primarily to the later effect.

The effect of Fe and Ru substitution for Ni on the thermopower in MgCNi_3

The intermetallic perovskite MgCNi3 is a superconductor with a Tc=7 K. Substitution of Fe and Ru for Ni decreases Tc monotonically as the doping concentration is increased. Here we report thermopower measurements, S(T), on MgCNi3, MgCNi3-xFex and MgCNi3-xRux. For MgCNi3, the thermopower is negative, - 12.5 mikroV/K, at 300 K. The absolute value of S decreases as x increases in MgCNi3-xFex and MgCNi3-xRux. The sign of S changes from negative to positive at low temperatures for values of x > 0.01. These data show that the carriers in MgCNi3 are electrons, and by increasing x and decreasing temperature, the participation of hole carriers clearly increases. The influence of the magnetic moments of the Fe atoms on the thermopower is not visible.

Structural Disorder and Properties of the Stuffed Pyrochlore Ho2TiO5

We report a structural and thermodynamic study of the "stuffed spin ice" material Ho2TiO5 (i.e., Ho2(Ti1.33Ho0.67)O6.67), comparing samples synthesized through two different routes. Neutron powder diffraction and electron diffraction reveal that the previously reported defect fluorite phase has short-range pyrochlore ordering, in that there are domains in which the Ho and Ho/Ti sublattices are distinct. By contrast, a sample prepared through a floating zone method has long range ordering of these sublattices. Despite the differences in crystal structures, the two versions of Ho2TiO5 display similar magnetic susceptibilities. Field dependent magnetization and measured recovered entropies, however, show a difference between the two forms, suggesting that the magnetic properties of the stuffed pyrochlores depend on the local structure.

Semimetal to semimetal charge density wave transition in 1T-TiSe$_2$

We report an infrared study on 1$T$-TiSe$_2$, the parent compound of the newly discovered superconductor Cu$_x$TiSe$_2$. Previous studies of this compound have not conclusively resolved whether it is a semimetal or a semiconductor: information that is important in determining the origin of its unconventional CDW transition. Here we present optical spectroscopy results that clearly reveal that the compound is metallic in both the high-temperature normal phase and the low-temperature CDW phase. The carrier scattering rate is dramatically different in the normal and CDW phases and the carrier density is found to change with temperature. We conclude that the observed properties can be explained within the scenario of an Overhauser-type CDW mechanism.

Rich magnetic phase diagram in the Kagome-staircase compound Mn3V2O8

Mn3V2O8 is a magnetic system in which S = 5/2 Mn2+ is found in the kagome staircase lattice. Here we report the magnetic phase diagram for temperatures above 2 K and applied magnetic fields below 9 T, characterized by measurements of the magnetization and specific heat with field along the three unique lattice directions. At low applied magnetic fields, the system first orders magnetically below Tm1 ~ 21 K, and then shows a second magnetic phase transition at Tm2 ~ 15 K. In addition, a phase transition that is apparent in specific heat but not seen in magnetization is found for all three applied field orientations, converging towards Tm2 as H -> 0. The magnetic behavior is highly anisotropic, with critical fields for magnetic phase boundaries much higher when the field is applied perpendicular to the Kagome staircase plane than when applied in-plane. The field-temperature (H - T) phase diagrams are quite rich, with 7 distinct phases observed.

The structures and thermoelectric properties of the infinitely adaptive series (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n

The structures and thermoelectric properties of the (Bi2)m(Bi2Te3)n homologous series, derived from stacking hexagonal Bi2 and Bi2Te3 blocks, are reported. The end-members of this series are metallic Bi and semiconducting Bi2Te3; nine members of the series have been studied. The structures form an infinitely adaptive series and a unified structural description based on a modulated structure approach is presented. The as-synthesized samples have thermopowers (S) that vary from n-type for Bi2Te3 to p-type for phases rich in Bi2 blocks but with some Bi2Te3 blocks present, to n-type again for Bi metal. The thermoelectric power factor (S2/rho) is highest for Bi metal (43 muW/K2 cm at 130 K), followed by Bi2Te3 (20 muW/K2 cm at 270 K), while Bi2Te (m:n = 5:2) and Bi7Te3 (m:n = 15:6) have 9 muW/K2 cm (at 240 K) and 11 muW/K2 (at 270 K), respectively. The results of doping studies with Sb and Se into Bi2Te are reported.

Magnetic Structure and Properties of the S = 5/2 Triangular Antiferromagnet $α$-NaFeO$_2$

The magnetic properties of $α$-NaFeO$_2$ are studied by neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. An ordered phase with spins aligned along the b$_hex$ axis exists at low temperatures (T < 4 K). At intermediate temperatures (4 K < T < 11 K), the system passes through an incommensurate ordered phase before transforming into a short range ordered state at higher temperatures that persists up to at least 50 K. Although the short range ordering does not persist to room temperature according to neutron diffraction, the magnetic susceptibility does not follow Curie-Weiss behavior, even up to 320 K. This rich magnetic behavior can be understood qualitatively as a competition between different magnetic exchange interactions that are similar in magnitude. The delicate balance between these interactions makes $α$-NaFeO$_2$ a candidate for more detailed theoretical work to understand magnetic behavior in frustrated magnetic systems.

Thermal expansion and effect of pressure on superconductivity in CuxTiSe2

We report measurements of thermal expansion on a number of polycrystalline CuxTiSe2 samples corresponding to the parts of x - T phase diagram with different ground states, as well as the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature for samples with three different values of Cu-doping. Thermal expansion data suggest that the x - T phase diagram may be more complex than initially reported. T_c data at elevated pressure can be scaled to the ambient pressure CuxTiSe2 phase diagram, however, significantly different scaling factors are needed to accommodate the literature data on the charge density wave transition suppression under pressure.

Sharp switching of the magnetization in Fe1/4TaS2

Anisotropic magneto-transport measurements are reported on Fe1/4TaS2 single crystals grown by vapor transport. Both the magnetization and resistivity are extremely anisotropic, with the magnetic moments aligned parallel to the c crystallographic direction. Fe1/4TaS2 orders ferromagnetically below TC = 160 K and displays very sharp hysteresis loops in the ordered state for H||c. The corresponding magnetoresistance is negative, and it qualitatively reproduces the features observed in the M(H) data, by showing a sharp drop around the critical field Hs for the moment reversal. The magnetization switching time shows an unusual increase with increasing temperature. For field applied within the ab plane, the magnetization remains small and linear in field up to 5 T, and the magnetoresistance is positive and quadratic in field, with no visible hysteresis. The squareness of the H||c M(H) loops and the high critical field for the magnetization switch (Hs = 3.7 T at T = 2 K) allow us to classify Fe1/4TaS2 as a strong ferromagnet.

Emergence of Fermi pockets in an excitonic CDW melted novel superconductor

A superconducting (SC) state (Tc ~ 4.2K) has very recently been observed upon successful doping of the CDW ordered triangular lattice TiSe$_2$, with copper. Using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy we identify, for the first time, the momentum space locations of the doped electrons that form the Fermi sea of the parent superconductor. With doping, we find that the kinematic nesting volume increases whereas the coherence of the CDW order sharply drops. In the superconducting doping, we observe the emergence of a large density of states in the form of a narrow electron pocket near the \textit{L}-point of the Brillouin Zone with \textit{d}-like character. The \textit{k}-space electron distributions highlight the unconventional interplay of CDW to SC cross-over achieved through non-magnetic copper doping.

Complete d-Band Dispersion and the Mobile Fermion Scale in NaxCoO2

We utilize fine-tuned polarization selection coupled with excitation-energy variation of photoelectron signal to image the \textit{complete d}-band dispersion relation in sodium cobaltates. A hybridization gap anticrossing is observed along the Brillouin zone corner and the full quasiparticle band is found to emerge as a many-body entity lacking a pure orbital polarization. At low dopings, the quasiparticle bandwidth (Fermion scale, many-body \textit{E$_F$} $\sim$ 0.25 eV) is found to be smaller than most known oxide metals. The low-lying density of states is found to be in agreement with bulk-sensitive thermodynamic measurements for nonmagnetic dopings where the 2D Luttinger theorem is also observed to be satisfied.

Anisotropic properties of the layered superconductor Cu0.07TiSe2

The anisotropic superconducting properties of single crystals of Cu0.07TiSe2 were studied by measurements of magnetization and electrical resistivity. TC is around 3.9 K, and the measured upper critical field (Hc2) values are ~1.25 T and 0.8 T, for applied field parallel and perpendicular to the TiSe2 planes, respectively. The anisotropy ratio gamma_anis = H^ab_c2 / H^c_c2 is close to 1.6 and nearly temperature independent. The lower critical field (Hc1) values are much smaller (~ 32 Oe for H||ab and 17 Oe for H||c); demagnetizing corrections for field perpendicular to the thin plate crystals are required for the determination of H^c_c1. The anisotropy of the critical fields is described well by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, and the characteristic GL parameters are determined and discussed.

Optical Properties and Magnetic Field-Induced Phase Transitions in the Ferroelectric State of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$

We use a combination of optical spectra, first principles calculations, and energy dependent magneto-optical measurements to elucidate the electronic structure and to study the phase diagram of Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$. We find a remarkable interplay of magnetic field and optical properties that reveals additional high magnetic field phases and an unexpected electronic structure which we associate with the strong magneto-dielectric couplings in this material over a wide energy range. Specifically, we observed several prominent magneto-dielectric effects that derive from changes in crystal field environment around Ni spine and cross-tie centers. This effect is consistent with a field-induced modification of local structure. Symmetry-breaking effects are also evident with temperature. We find Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ to be an intermediate gap, local moment band insulator. This electronic structure is particularly favorable for magneto-dielectric couplings, because the material is not subject to the spin charge separation characteristic of strongly correlated large gap Mott insulators, while at the same time remaining a magnetic insulator independent of the particular spin order and temperature.

Unconventional Dynamics in Triangular Heisenberg Antiferromagnet NaCrO2

We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excitations in the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets.

ARPES Study of the Metal-Insulator Transition in Bismuth Cobaltates

We present an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of a Mott-Hubbard-type bismuth cobaltate system across a metal-insulator transition. By varying the amount of Pb substitution, and by doping with Sr or Ba cation, a range of insulating to metallic properties is obtained. We observe a systematic change in the spectral weight of the coherent and incoherent parts, accompanied by an energy shift of the incoherent part. The band dispersion also shows the emergence of a weakly dispersing state at the Fermi energy with increasing conductivity. These changes correspond with the changes in the temperature-dependent resistivity behavior. We address the nature of the coherent-incoherent parts in relation to the peak-dip-hump feature seen in cuprates superconductors.

Structure and basic magnetic properties of the honeycomb lattice compounds Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6

The synthesis, structure, and basic magnetic properties of Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6 are reported. The crystal structures were determined by neutron powder diffraction. Na2Co2TeO6 has a two-layer hexagonal structure (space group P6322) while Na3Co2SbO6 has a single-layer monoclinic structure (space group C2/m). The Co, Te, and Sb ions are in octahedral coordination, and the edge sharing octahedra form planes interleaved by sodium ions. Both compounds have full ordering of the Co2+ and Te6+/Sb5+ ions in the ab plane such that the Co2+ ions form a honeycomb array; the stacking of the honeycomb arrays differ in the two compounds. Both Na2Co2TeO6 and Na3Co2SbO6 reveal antiferromagnetic ordering at low temperatures, with a metamagnetic transition displayed by Na3Co2SbO6.
