Magnetic frustration in the sawtooth lattice of ZnLn2S4 (Ln = Er, Tm, Yb) olivines

We report the magnetic properties of the ZnLn2S4 (Ln = Er, Tm, Yb) olivines, in which the magnetic lanthanide ions are in a potentially frustrated geometry consisting of sawtooth chains of corner-sharing triangles. Fits to the high temperature magnetic susceptibility yielded Curie-Weiss temperatures of theta ~ -4, -13, and -75 K for the Er, Tm, and Yb compounds respectively. Antiferromagnetic interactions indicated by these negative theta values, along with the absence of magnetic long range order above T = 1.8 K, suggest that geometrical frustration of magnetic ordering exists in these sulfide olivines as has been observed previously in the rare earth chalcogenide spinels.

Geometrical Magnetic Frustration in Rare Earth Chalcogenide Spinels

We have characterized the magnetic and structural properties of the CdLn2Se4 (Ln = Dy, Ho), and CdLn2S4 (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) spinels. We observe all compounds to be normal spinels, possessing a geometrically frustrated sublattice of lanthanide atoms with no observable structural disorder. Fits to the high temperature magnetic susceptibilities indicate these materials to have effective antiferromagnetic interactions, with Curie-Weiss temperatures theta ~ -10 K, except CdYb2S4 for which theta ~ -40 K. The absence of magnetic long range order or glassiness above T = 1.8 K strongly suggests that these materials are a new venue in which to study the effects of strong geometrical frustration, potentially as rich in new physical phenomena as that of the pyrochlore oxides.

Magnetically driven ferroelectric order in Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$

We show that for Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ long-range ferroelectric and incommensurate magnetic order appear simultaneously in a single phase transition. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the spontaneous polarization show a strong coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric orders. We determine the magnetic symmetry of this system by constraining the data to be consistent with Landau theory for continuous phase transitions. This phenomenological theory explains our observation the spontaneous polarization is restricted to lie along the crystal b axis and predicts that the magnitude should be proportional to a magnetic order parameter.

Nature of Correlated Motion of Electrons in the Parent Cobaltate Superconductors

Recently discovered class of cobaltate superconductors (Na0.3CoO2.nH2O) is a novel realization of interacting quantum electron systems in a triangular network with low-energy degrees of freedom. We employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to uncover the nature of microscopic electron motion in the parent superconductors for the first time. Results reveal a large hole-like Fermi surface (consistent with Luttinger theorem) generated by the crossing of super-heavy quasiparticles. The measured quasiparticle parameters collectively suggest a two orders of magnitude departure from the conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer electron dynamics paradigm and unveils cobaltates as a rather hidden class of relatively high temperature superconductors.

The effect of {11}^B substitution on the superconductivity in MgCNi3

The crystal structure of boron doped superconducting MgC_{1-x}{11}^B_{x}Ni_{3}, studied by powder neutron diffraction, is reported. The solubility limit of boron is determined to be approximately x=0.16. The unit cell expands from a = 3.81089(2) to 3.81966(2) Angstroms as x increases from x=0 to x=0.155. Boron ({11}^B) doping decreases Tc with increasing x: from 7.09K (x=0) to 6.44K (x=0.155).

Anomalous-Hall heat current and Nernst effect in the ferromagnet CuCr_2Se_{4-x}Br_x

In a ferromagnet, an anomalous-Hall heat current, given by the off-diagonal Peltier term $α_{xy}$, accompanies the anomalous Hall current. By combining Nernst, thermopower and Hall experiments, we have measured how $α_{xy}$ varies with hole density and lifetime $τ$ in $\rm CuCr_2Se_{4-x}Br_x$. At low temperatures $T$, we find that $α_{xy}$ is independent of $τ$, consistent with anomalous-velocity theories. Its magnitude is fixed by a microscopic geometric area ${\cal A}\sim 34 \mathrmÅ^2$. Our results are incompatible with some models of the Nernst effect in ferromagnets.

Hydration phase diagram for sodium cobalt oxide Na0.3CoO2*yH2O

The hydration phase diagram for sodium cobalt oxyhydrate, Na0.3CoO2*yH2O (y=0, 0.6, 1.3), was determined as a function of relative humidity at 298K. It is found that greater than 75% relative humidity is needed for complete hydration of anhydrous Na0.3CoO2 to the superconducting phase Na0.3CoO2*1.3H2O. Dehydration studies show that a minimum of 43% relative humidity is needed to maintain the stability of the fully hydrated superconducting phase. The intermediate hydrate, Na0.3CoO2*0.6H2O, is stable between 10% and 50% relative humidity on hydration, and 35% to 0% relative humidity on dehydration.

Possible singlet to triplet pairing transition in NaxCoO2 H2O

We present precise measurements of the upper critical field (Hc2) in the recently discovered cobalt oxide superconductor. We have found that the critical field has an unusual temperature dependence; namely, there is an abrupt change of the slope of Hc2(T) in a weak field regime. In order to explain this result we have derived and solved Gor'kov equations on a triangular lattice. Our experimental results may be interpreted in terms of the field-induced transition from singlet to triplet superconductivity.

Carbon isotope effect in superconducting MgCNi_3

The effect of Carbon isotope substitution on T_c in the intermetallic perovskite superconductor MgCNi_3 is reported. Four independent groups of samples were synthesized and characterized. The average T_c for the Carbon-12 samples was found to be 7.12(2) K and the average T_c for the Carbon-13 samples was found to be 6.82(2) K. The resulting carbon isotope effect coefficient is alfa_C = 0.54(3). This indicates that carbon-based phonons play a critical role in the presence of superconductivity in this compound.

Heat Capacity of Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_{2}$$\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O, a New Two-Gap Superconductor: Comparison with the Heat Capacity of MgB$_2$

The superconducting-state heat capacity of Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_{2}$$\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O shows unusual, marked deviations from BCS theory, at all temperatures. At low temperatures the heat capacity has the $T^2$ dependence characteristic of line nodes in the energy gap, rather than the exponential temperature dependence of a fully gapped, conventional superconductor. At temperatures of the order of one fifth of the critical temperature and above, the deviations are strikingly similar to those of MgB$_2$, which are known to be a consequence of the existence of substantially different energy gaps on different sheets of the Fermi surface. A two-gap fit to the Na$_{0.3}$CoO$_{2}$$\cdot$1.3H${_2}$O data gives gap amplitudes of 45% and 125% of the BCS value, on parts of the Fermi surface that contribute, respectively, 45% and 55% to the normal-state density of states. The temperature of the onset of the transition to the vortex state is independent of magnetic field, which shows the presence of unusually strong fluctuations.

Competing Magnetic Phases on a "Kagome Staircase"

We present thermodynamic and neutron data on Ni_3V_2O_8, a spin-1 system on a kagome staircase. The extreme degeneracy of the kagome antiferromagnet is lifted to produce two incommensurate phases at finite T - one amplitude modulated, the other helical - plus a commensurate canted antiferromagnet for T ->0. The H-T phase diagram is described by a model of competing first and second neighbor interactions with smaller anisotropic terms. Ni_3V_2O_8 thus provides an elegant example of order from sub leading interactions in a highly frustrated system

Coupling between electronic and structural degrees of freedom in the triangular lattice conductor NaxCoO2

The determination by powder neutron diffraction of the ambient temperature crystal structures of compounds in the NaxCoO2 family, for 0.3 < x <= 1.0, is reported. The structures consist of triangular CoO2 layers with Na ions distributed in intervening charge reservoir layers. The shapes of the CoO6 octahedra that make up the CoO2 layers are found to be critically dependent on the electron count and on the distribution of the Na ions in the intervening layers, where two types of Na sites are available. Correlation of the shapes of cobalt-oxygen octahedra, the Na ion positions, and the electronic phase diagram in NaxCoO2 is made, showing how structural and electronic degrees of freedom can be coupled in electrically conducting triangular lattice systems.

Superconductivity in three-layer Na0.3CoO2*1.3H2O

The observation of superconductivity at 4.3 K in a new crystalline form of Na0.3CoO2*1.3H2O is reported. The new superconductor has three layers of CoO6 octahedra per crystallographic unit cell, in contrast to the previously reported two-layer superconductor. The three-layer cell occurs because the relative orientations of neighboring CoO2 layers are distinctly different from what is seen in the two-layer superconducting phase. This type of structural difference in materials that are otherwise chemically and structurally identical is not possible to attain on the layered copper oxide superconductors. The synthesis and stability of the new phase are described.

The Effect of Ru substitution for Ni on the superconductivity in MgCNi3-xRux

The superconductor MgCNi3 has been chemically doped by partial substitution of Ru for Ni in the solid solution MgCNi3-xRux for 0<x<0.5. Magnetic and specific heat measurements show that the Sommerfeld parameter (gamma_exp) and TC decrease immediately on Ru substitution, but that a TC above 2K is maintained even for a relatively large decrease in gamma_exp. Ferromagnetism is not observed to develop through Ru substitution, and the normal state magnetic susceptibility is suppressed.

Spin entropy as the likely source of enhanced thermopower in $\rm\bf Na_xCo_2O_4

In an electric field, the flow of electrons in a solid produces an entropy current in addition to the familiar charge current. This Peltier effect underlies all thermoelectric refrigerators. The upsurge in thermoelectric cooling applications has led to a search for more efficient Peltier materials and to renewed theoretical interest in how electron-electron interaction may enhance the thermopower $Q$ of materials such as the transition-metal oxides \cite{Mahan,Beni,Kotliar,Chaikin}. An important factor in this enhancement is the electronic spin entropy, which is predicted \cite{Chaikin,Kwak,KwakChaikin} to dominate the entropy current. Here we report evidence for such suppression in the layered oxide $\rm Na_xCo_2O_4$, and present evidence that it is a strong-correlation effect.

Dissipationless Anomalous Hall Current in the Ferromagnetic Spinel CuCr$_2$Se$_{4-x}$Br$_x$

In a ferromagnet, an applied electric field $\bf E$ invariably produces an anomalous Hall current ${\bf J}_H$ that flows perpendicular to the plane defined by $\bf E$ and $\bf M$ (the magnetization). For decades, the question whether ${\bf J}_H$ is dissipationless (independent of the scattering rate), has been keenly debated without experimental resolution. In the ferromagnetic spinel CuCr$_2$Se$_{4-x}$Br$_x$, the resistivity $ρ$ (at low temperature) may be increased 1000 fold by varying $x$(Br), without degrading the $\bf M$. We show that ${\bf J}_H/E$ (normalized per carrier, at 5 K) remains unchanged throughout. In addition to resolving the controversy experimentally, our finding has strong bearing on the generation and study of spin-Hall currents in bulk samples.

Quantum and thermal spin relaxation in diluted spin ice: Dy(2-x)MxTi2O7 (M = Lu, Y)

We have studied the low temperature a.c. magnetic susceptibility of the diluted spin ice compound Dy(2-x)MxTi2O7, where the magnetic Dy ions on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice have been replaced with non-magnetic ions, M = Y or Lu. We examine a broad range of dilutions, 0 <= x <= 1.98, and we find that the T ~ 16 K freezing is suppressed for low levels of dilution but re-emerges for x > 0.4 and persists to x = 1.98. This behavior can be understood as a non-monotonic dependence of the quantum spin relaxation time with dilution. The results suggest that the observed spin freezing is fundamentally a single spin process which is affected by the local environment, rather than the development of spin-spin correlations as earlier data suggested.

Interband scattering in MgB2

The scattering process responsible for connecting the bands remains one of the last open questions on the physical properties of MgB2. Through the analysis of the equilibrium and photo-induced far-infrared properties as well as electron spin resonance of MgB2 we propose a phonon mediated energy transfer process between the bands based on the coupling of quasiparticles to an E2g phonon.
