A Non-Centrosymmetric Superconductor with a Bulk 3D Dirac Cone Gapped by Strong Spin Orbit Coupling

Layered, non-centrosymmetric, heavy element PbTaSe2 is found to be superconducting. We report its electronic properties accompanied by electronic structure calculations. Specific heat, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that PbTaSe2 is a moderately coupled, type-II BCS superconductor (Tc = 3.72 K, Ginzburg-Landau parameter Kappa = 14) with an electronphonon coupling constant of Lambda_ep = 0.74. Electronic structure calculations reveal a single bulk 3D Dirac cone at the K point of the Brillouin Zone derived exclusively from its hexagonal Pb layer; it is similar to the feature found in graphene except there is a 0.8 eV gap opened by spin-orbit coupling. The combination of large spin-orbit coupling and lack of inversion symmetry also results in large Rashba splitting on the order of tenths of eV.

Evidence for massive bulk Dirac Fermions in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se from Nernst and thermopower experiments

The lead chalcogenides (Pb,Sn)Te and (Pb,Sn)Se are the first examples of topological crystalline insulators (TCI) predicted \cite{Fu,Hsieh} (and confirmed \cite{Hasan,Story,Takahashi}) to display topological surface Dirac states (SDS) that are protected by mirror symmetry. A starting premise \cite{Hsieh} is that the SDS arise from bulk states describable as massive Dirac states \cite{Wallis,Svane}, but this assumption is untested. Here we show that the thermoelectric response of the bulk states display features specific to the Dirac spectrum. We show that, in the quantum limit, the lowest Landau Level (LL) is singly spin-degenerate, whereas higher levels are doubly degenerate. The abrupt change in spin degeneracy leads to a large step-decrease in the thermopower $S_{xx}$. In the lowest LL, $S_{xx}$ displays a striking linear increase vs. magnetic field. In addition, the Nernst signal undergoes an anomalous sign change when the bulk gap inverts at 180 K.

Chemically gated electronic structure of a superconducting doped topological insulator system

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy is used to observe changes in the electronic structure of bulk-doped topological insulator Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ as additional copper atoms are deposited onto the cleaved crystal surface. Carrier density and surface-normal electrical field strength near the crystal surface are estimated to consider the effect of chemical surface gating on atypical superconducting properties associated with topological insulator order, such as the dynamics of theoretically predicted Majorana Fermion vortices.

Oscillatory surface dichroism of an insulating topological insulator Bi2Te2Se

Using circular dichroism-angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (CD-ARPES), we report a study of the effect of angular momentum transfer between polarized photons and topological surface states on the surface of highly bulk insulating topological insulator Bi2Te2Se. The photoelectron dichroism is found to be strongly modulated by the frequency of the helical photons including a dramatic sign-flip. Our results suggest that the observed dichroism and its sign-flip are consequences of strong coupling between the photon field and the spin-orbit nature of the Dirac modes on the surface. Our studies reveal the intrinsic dichroic behavior of topological surface states and point toward the potential utility of bulk insulating topological insulators in device applications.

Visualizing the Charge Density Wave Transition in 2H-NbSe2 in Real Space

We report the direct observation in real space of the charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in pristine 2H-NbSe2 using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We find that static CDW order is established in nanoscale regions in the vicinity of defects at temperatures that are several times the bulk transition temperature Tcdw. On lowering the temperature, the correlation length of these patches increases steadily until CDW order is established in all of space, demonstrating the crucial role played by defects in the physics of the transition region. The nanoscale CDW order has an energy and temperature-independent wavelength. Spectroscopic imaging measurements of the real-space phase of the CDW indicate that an energy gap in NbSe2 occurs at 0.7eV below the Fermi energy in the CDW phase, suggesting that strong electron-lattice interactions and not Fermi surface physics is the dominant cause for CDW formation in NbSe2.

Tuning the quantum oscillations of surface Dirac electrons in the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se by liquid gating

In Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se, the period of quantum oscillations arising from surface Dirac fermions can be increased 6-fold using ionic liquid gating. At large gate voltages, the Fermi energy reaches the $N$ = 1 Landau level in a 14-Tesla field. This enables the $\frac12$-shift predicted for the Dirac spectrum to be measured accurately. A surprising result is that liquid gating strongly enhances the surface mobility. By analyzing the Hall conductivity, we show that the enhancement occurs on only one surface. We present evidence that the gating process is fully reversible (hence consistent with band-bending by the $E$-field from the anion layer accumulated). In addition to the surface carriers, the experiment yields the mobility and density of the bulk carriers in the impurity band. By analyzing the charge accumulation vs. gate voltage, we also obtain estimates of the depletion width and the areal depletion capacitance $C_d/A$. The value of $C_d/A$ implies an enhanced electronic polarizability in the depletion region.

Superconductivity in the Cu(Ir1-xPtx)2Se4 Spinel

We report the observation of superconductivity in the CuIr2Se4 spinel induced by partial substitution of Pt for Ir. The optimal doping level for superconductivity in Cu(Ir1-xPtx)2Se4 is x = 0.2, where Tc is 1.76 K. A superconducting Tc vs. composition dome is established between the metallic, normal conductor CuIr2Se4 and semiconducting CuIrPtSe4. Electronic structure calculations show that the optimal Tc occurs near the electron count of a large peak in the calculated electronic density of states and that CuIrPtSe4 is a band-filled insulator. Characterization of the superconducting state in this heavy metal spinel through determination of ΔC/γTc, indicates that it is BCS-like. The relatively high upper critical field at the optimal superconducting composition (Hc2(0) = 3.2 T) is much larger than that reported for analogous rhodium spinels and is comparable to or exceeds the Pauli field (mu0Hp), suggesting that strong spin orbit coupling may influence the superconducting state. Further, comparison to doped CuIr2S4 suggests that superconductivity in iridium spinels is not necessarily associated with the destabilization of a charge-ordered spin-paired state through doping.

Spin-flop and antiferromagnetic phases of the ferromagnetic half-twist ladder compounds Ba3Cu3In4O12 and Ba3Cu3Sc4O12

The title compounds have dominant ferromagnetic (FM) exchange interactions within one-dimensional (1D) half-twist ladders of s =1/2 Cu2^{+} ions and antiferromagnetic(AFM) interactions between ladders, leading to ordered 3D phases at temperatures below 20K. Here we show that a microscopic 1D model of the paramagnetic (PM) phase combined with a phenomenological model based on sublattice magnetization describes the observed temperature and field dependent magnetism. The model identifies AFM, spin-flop (SF) and PM phases whose boundaries have sharp features in the experimental magnetization M(T,H) and specific heat CP(T,H). Exact diagonalization (ED) of the 1D model, possible for 24 spins due to special structural features of half-twist ladders, yields the magnetization and spin susceptibility of the PM phase. AFM interactions between ladders are included at the mean-field level using the field, HAF, obtained from modeling the ordered phases. Isotropic exchange J1 = -135K and g-tensor g = 2.1 within ladders, plus exchange and anisotropy fields HAF and HA, describe the ordered phases, and are almost quantitative for the PM phase.

Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Ba3TeCo3P2O14, Pb3TeCo3P2O14, and Pb3TeCo3V2O14 Langasites

We report the structural and magnetic characterizations of Ba3TeCo3P2O14, Pb3TeCo3P2O14, and Pb3TeCo3V2O14, compounds that are based on the mineral Dugganite, which is isostructural to Langasites. The magnetic part of the structure consists of layers of Co2+ triangles. Nuclear and magnetic structures were determined through a co-refinement of synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction data. In contrast to the undistorted P321 Langasite structure of Ba3TeCo3P2O14, a complex structural distortion yielding a large supercell is found for both Pb3TeCo3P2O14 and Pb3TeCo3V2O14. Comparison of the three compounds studied along with the zinc analog Pb3TeZn3P2O14, also characterized here, suggests that the distortion is driven by Pb2+ lone pairs; as such, the Pb compounds crystallize in a pyroelectric space group, P2. Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic behavior. All three compounds become antiferromagnetic with Néel temperatures TN ~ 21 K (Ba3TeCo3P2O14), ~ 13 K (Pb3TeCo3P2O14), and ~ 8 K (Pb3TeCo3V2O14), and they exhibit magnetic transitions at high applied magnetic fields, suggesting intrinsically complex magnetic behavior for tetrahedrally coordinated d7 Co2+ in this structure type.

Lone Pair Effect, Structural Distortions and Potential for Superconductivity in Tl Perovskites

Drawing the analogy to BaBiO3, we investigate via ab-initio electronic structure calculations potential new superconductors of the type ATlX3 with A = Rb, Cs and X = F, Cl, and Br, with a particular emphasis on RbTlCl3. Based on chemical reasoning, supported by the calculations, we show that Tl-based perovskites have structural and charge instabilities driven by the lone pair effect, similar to the case of BaBiO3, effectively becoming A2Tl1+Tl3+X6. We find that upon hole doping of RbTlCl3, structures without Tl1+, Tl3+ charge disproportionation become more stable, although the ideal cubic perovskite, often viewed as the best host for superconductivity, should not be the most stable phase in the system. The known superconductor (Sr,K)BiO3 and hole doped RbTlCl3, predicted to be most stable in the same tetragonal structure, display highly analogous calculated electronic band structures.

Crystal Structure and Chemistry of Topological Insulators

Topological surface states, a new kind of electronic state of matter, have recently been observed on the cleaved surfaces of crystals of a handful of small band gap semiconductors. The underlying chemical factors that enable these states are crystal symmetry, the presence of strong spin orbit coupling, and an inversion of the energies of the bulk electronic states that normally contribute to the valence and conduction bands. The goals of this review are to briefly introduce the physics of topological insulators to a chemical audience and to describe the chemistry, defect chemistry, and crystal structures of the compounds in this emergent field.

Hybrid high-temperature superconductor-semiconductor tunnel diode

We report the demonstration of hybrid high-Tc-superconductor-semiconductor tunnel junctions, enabling new interdisciplinary directions in condensed matter research. The devices were fabricated by our newly-developed mechanical bonding technique, resulting in high-Tc-semiconductor planar junctions acting as superconducting tunnel diodes. Tunneling-spectra characterization of the hybrid junctions of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ combined with bulk GaAs, or a GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well, exhibits excess voltage and nonlinearity - in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a d-wave superconductor-normal material junction, and similar to spectra obtained in scanning tunneling microscopy. Additional junctions are demonstrated using Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ combined with graphite or Bi2Te3. Our results pave the way for new methods in unconventional superconductivity studies, novel materials and quantum technology applications.

Topological insulator in a Bi-Bi$_2$Se$_3$ infinitely adaptive superlattice phase

We report spin- and angle-resolved photoemission studies of a topological insulator from the infinitely adaptive series between elemental Bi and Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The compound, based on Bi$_4$Se$_3$, is a 1:1 natural superlattice of alternating Bi$_2$ layers and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers; the inclusion of S allows the growth of large crystals, with the formula Bi$_4$Se$_{2.6}$S$_{0.4}$. The crystals cleave along the interfaces between the Bi$_2$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ layers, with the surfaces obtained having alternating Bi or Se termination. The resulting terraces, observed by photoemission electron microscopy, create avenues suitable for the study of one-dimensional topological physics. The electronic structure, determined by spin- and angle- resolved photoemission spectroscopy, shows the existence of a surface state that forms a large, hexagonally shaped Fermi surface around the $Γ$ point of the surface Brillouin zone, with the spin structure indicating that this material is a topological insulator.

Antiferromagnetic order in Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ observed by $^{75}$As NMR

$^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements carried out on underdoped, non-superconducting Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$)(Fe$_2$As$_2$)$_5$ reveal physical properties that are similar but not identical to the 122 superconductor parent compounds such as BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Results from the single crystal study indicate a phase transition to an antiferromagnetic (AF) state on cooling through T~100K, albeit nonuniformly. Specifically, the NMR lineshape reflects the presence of staggered hyperfine fields on the As sites associated with a striped AF order. The variation of the internal hyperfine field with temperature suggests that the phase transition to the AF state is discontinuous, and therefore likely coincident with the structural transition inferred from transport experiments.

Temperature-concentration phase diagram of (Ca1-xLax)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 superconductors

Single crystals of (Ca1-xLax)10(Pt3As8)(Fe2As2)5 (x = 0 to 0.182) superconductors have been grown and characterized by X-ray, microprobe, transport and thermodynamic measurements. Features in the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and two kinks in the derivative of the electrical resistivity around 100 K in the x = 0 compound support the existence of decoupled structural and magnetic phase transitions. With La doping, the structural/magnetic phase transitions are suppressed and a half-dome of superconductivity with a maximal Tc around 26 K is observed in the temperature-concentration phase diagram.

Dirac point spectral weight suppression and surface "gaps" in nonmagnetic and magnetic topological insulators

It is predicted that electrons on the surface of a topological insulator can acquire a mass (massive Dirac fermion) by opening up a gap at the Dirac point when time-reversal symmetry is broken via the out-of-plane magnetization. We report photoemission studies on a series of topological insulator materials focusing on the spectral behavior in the vicinity of the Dirac node. Our results show that the spectral intensity is suppressed resulting in a "gap"-like feature in materials with or without any magnetic impurity or doping. The Zeeman gap in magnetically doped samples, expected to be rather small, is likely masked by the non-magnetic strong spectral weight suppression involving a large energy scale we report. The photoemission spectral weight suppression observed around the Dirac node thus cannot be taken as the sole evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking magnetic gap. We discuss a few possible extrinsic and kinematic origins of the Dirac point spectral weight suppression ("gap") observed in many commonly studied topological materials.

Topological Surface States and Dirac point tuning in ternary Bi2Te2Se class of topological insulators

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we report electronic structure for representative members of ternary topological insulators. We show that several members of this family, such as Bi2Se2Te, Bi2Te2Se, and GeBi2Te4, exhibit a singly degenerate Dirac-like surface state, while Bi2Se2S is a fully gapped insulator with no measurable surface state. One of these compounds, Bi2Se2Te, shows tunable surface state dispersion upon its electronic alloying with Sb (SbxBi2-xSe2Te series). Other members of the ternary family such as GeBi2Te4 and BiTe1.5S1.5 show an in-gap surface Dirac point, the former of which has been predicted to show nonzero weak topological invariants such as (1;111); thus belonging to a different topological class than BiTe1.5S1.5. The measured band structure presented here will be a valuable guide for interpreting transport, thermoelectric, and thermopower measurements on these compounds. The unique surface band topology observed in these compounds contributes towards identifying designer materials with desired flexibility needed for thermoelectric and spintronic device fabrication.

Low temperature dynamic freezing and the fragility of ordering in Tb2Sn2O7

We have probed the low temperature magnetic behavior of the ordered spin ice material Tb2Sn2O7 through ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of both the pure material and samples with small percentages of Ti substituted on the Sn sublattice. We observe a clear signature for the previously reported ordering transition at TC = 850 mK, as well as evidence for dynamic freezing at temperatures well below TC, confirming the persistence of significant magnetic fluctuations deep in the spin-ordered regime. The long range ordering transition was completely suppressed with as little as 5% Ti for Sn substitution, and 10% Ti substitution resulted in a spin-glass-like spin freezing transition near 250 mK. The results demonstrate that the long range magnetic ordering is surprisingly fragile in this system.
