A low-complexity 8-point orthogonal approximate DCT is introduced. The proposed transform requires no multiplications or bit-shift operations. The derived fast algorithm requires only 14 additions, less than any existing DCT approximation. Moreover, in several image compression scenarios, the proposed transform could outperform the well-known signed DCT, as well as state-of-the-art algorithms.

Energy-efficient 8-point DCT Approximations: Theory and Hardware Architectures

Due to its remarkable energy compaction properties, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is employed in a multitude of compression standards, such as JPEG and H.265/HEVC. Several low-complexity integer approximations for the DCT have been proposed for both 1-D and 2-D signal analysis. The increasing demand for low-complexity, energy efficient methods require algorithms with even lower computational costs. In this paper, new 8-point DCT approximations with very low arithmetic complexity are presented. The new transforms are proposed based on pruning state-of-the-art DCT approximations. The proposed algorithms were assessed in terms of arithmetic complexity, energy retention capability, and image compression performance. In addition, a metric combining performance and computational complexity measures was proposed. Results showed good performance and extremely low computational complexity. Introduced algorithms were mapped into systolic-array digital architectures and physically realized as digital prototype circuits using FPGA technology and mapped to 45nm CMOS technology. All hardware-related metrics showed low resource consumption of the proposed pruned approximate transforms. The best proposed transform according to the introduced metric presents a reduction in power consumption of 21--25%.

A Class of DCT Approximations Based on the Feig-Winograd Algorithm

A new class of matrices based on a parametrization of the Feig-Winograd factorization of 8-point DCT is proposed. Such parametrization induces a matrix subspace, which unifies a number of existing methods for DCT approximation. By solving a comprehensive multicriteria optimization problem, we identified several new DCT approximations. Obtained solutions were sought to possess the following properties: (i) low multiplierless computational complexity, (ii) orthogonality or near orthogonality, (iii) low complexity invertibility, and (iv) close proximity and performance to the exact DCT. Proposed approximations were submitted to assessment in terms of proximity to the DCT, coding performance, and suitability for image compression. Considering Pareto efficiency, particular new proposed approximations could outperform various existing methods archived in literature.

Multiplierless 16-point DCT Approximation for Low-complexity Image and Video Coding

An orthogonal 16-point approximate discrete cosine transform (DCT) is introduced. The proposed transform requires neither multiplications nor bit-shifting operations. A fast algorithm based on matrix factorization is introduced, requiring only 44 additions---the lowest arithmetic cost in literature. To assess the introduced transform, computational complexity, similarity with the exact DCT, and coding performance measures are computed. Classical and state-of-the-art 16-point low-complexity transforms were used in a comparative analysis. In the context of image compression, the proposed approximation was evaluated via PSNR and SSIM measurements, attaining the best cost-benefit ratio among the competitors. For video encoding, the proposed approximation was embedded into a HEVC reference software for direct comparison with the original HEVC standard. Physically realized and tested using FPGA hardware, the proposed transform showed 35% and 37% improvements of area-time and area-time-squared VLSI metrics when compared to the best competing transform in the literature.

A low-complexity orthogonal multiplierless approximation for the 16-point discrete cosine transform (DCT) was introduced. The proposed method was designed to possess a very low computational cost. A fast algorithm based on matrix factorization was proposed requiring only 60~additions. The proposed architecture outperforms classical and state-of-the-art algorithms when assessed as a tool for image and video compression. Digital VLSI hardware implementations were also proposed being physically realized in FPGA technology and implemented in 45 nm up to synthesis and place-route levels. Additionally, the proposed method was embedded into a high efficiency video coding (HEVC) reference software for actual proof-of-concept. Obtained results show negligible video degradation when compared to Chen DCT algorithm in HEVC.

Robust Image Watermarking Using Non-Regular Wavelets

An approach to watermarking digital images using non-regular wavelets is advanced. Non-regular transforms spread the energy in the transform domain. The proposed method leads at the same time to increased image quality and increased robustness with respect to lossy compression. The approach provides robust watermarking by suitably creating watermarked messages that have energy compaction and frequency spreading. Our experimental results show that the application of non-regular wavelets, instead of regular ones, can furnish a superior robust watermarking scheme. The generated watermarked data is more immune against non-intentional JPEG and JPEG2000 attacks.

Wavelet Analysis in a Canine Model of Gastric Electrical Uncoupling

Abnormal gastric motility function could be related to gastric electrical uncoupling, the lack of electrical, and respectively mechanical, synchronization in different regions of the stomach. Therefore, non-invasive detection of the onset of gastric electrical uncoupling can be important for diagnosing associated gastric motility disorders. The aim of this study is to provide a wavelet-based analysis of electrogastrograms (EGG, the cutaneous recordings of gastric electric activity), to detect gastric electric uncoupling. Eight-channel EGG recordings were acquired from sixteen dogs in basal state and after each of two circular gastric myotomies. These myotomies simulated mild and severe gastric electrical uncoupling, while keeping the separated gastric sections electrophysiologically active by preserving their blood supply. After visual inspection, manually selected 10-minute EGG segments were submitted to wavelet analysis. Quantitative methodology to choose an optimal wavelet was derived. This "matching" wavelet was determined using the Pollen parameterization for 6-tap wavelet filters and error minimization criteria. After a wavelet-based compression, the distortion of the approximated EGG signals was computed. Statistical analysis on the distortion values allowed to significantly ($p<0.05$) distinguish basal state from mild and severe gastric electrical uncoupling groups in particular EGG channels.

A Generalized Prefix Construction for OFDM Systems Over Quasi-Static Channels

All practical OFDM systems require a prefix to eliminate inter-symbol interference at the receiver. Cyclic prefix (CP) and zero-padding are well-known prefix construction methods, the former being the most employed technique in practice due to its lower complexity. In this paper we construct an OFDM system with a generalized CP. It is shown that the proposed generalized prefix effectively makes the channel experienced by the packet different from the actual channel. Using an optimization procedure, lower bit error rates can be achieved, outperforming other prefix construction techniques. At the same time the complexity of the technique is comparable to the CP method. The presented simulation results show that the proposed technique not only outperforms the CP method, but is also more robust in the presence of channel estimation errors and mobility. The proposed method is appropriate for practical OFDM systems.

A New Information Theoretical Concept: Information-Weighted Heavy-tailed Distributions

Given an arbitrary continuous probability density function, it is introduced a conjugated probability density, which is defined through the Shannon information associated with its cumulative distribution function. These new densities are computed from a number of standard distributions, including uniform, normal, exponential, Pareto, logistic, Kumaraswamy, Rayleigh, Cauchy, Weibull, and Maxwell-Boltzmann. The case of joint information-weighted probability distribution is assessed. An additive property is derived in the case of independent variables. One-sided and two-sided information-weighting are considered. The asymptotic behavior of the tail of the new distributions is examined. It is proved that all probability densities proposed here define heavy-tailed distributions. It is shown that the weighting of distributions regularly varying with extreme-value index $α> 0$ still results in a regular variation distribution with the same index. This approach can be particularly valuable in applications where the tails of the distribution play a major role.

Multilayer Hadamard Decomposition of Discrete Hartley Transforms

Discrete transforms such as the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or the discrete Hartley transform (DHT) furnish an indispensable tool in signal processing. The successful application of transform techniques relies on the existence of the so-called fast transforms. In this paper some fast algorithms are derived which meet the lower bound on the multiplicative complexity of the DFT/DHT. The approach is based on a decomposition of the DHT into layers of Walsh-Hadamard transforms. In particular, fast algorithms for short block lengths such as $N \in \{4, 8, 12, 24\}$ are presented.

Multi-beam 4 GHz Microwave Apertures Using Current-Mode DFT Approximation on 65 nm CMOS

A current-mode CMOS design is proposed for realizing receive mode multi-beams in the analog domain using a novel DFT approximation. High-bandwidth CMOS RF transistors are employed in low-voltage current mirrors to achieve bandwidths exceeding 4 GHz with good beam fidelity. Current mirrors realize the coefficients of the considered DFT approximation, which take simple values in $\{0, \pm1, \pm2\}$ only. This allows high bandwidths realizations using simple circuitry without needing phase-shifters or delays. The proposed design is used as a method to efficiently achieve spatial discrete Fourier transform operation across a ULA to obtain multiple simultaneous RF beams. An example using 1.2 V current-mode approximate DFT on 65 nm CMOS, with BSIM4 models from the RF kit, show potential operation up to 4 GHz with eight independent aperture beams.

Wavelets for Elliptical Waveguide Problems

New elliptic cylindrical wavelets are introduced, which exploit the relationship between analysing filters and Floquet's solution of Mathieu differential equations. It is shown that the transfer function of both multiresolution filters is related to the solution of a Mathieu equation of odd characteristic exponent. The number of notches of these analysing filters can be easily designed. Wavelets derived by this method have potential application in the fields of optics, microwaves and electromagnetism.

A Short Survey on Arithmetic Transforms and the Arithmetic Hartley Transform

Arithmetic complexity has a main role in the performance of algorithms for spectrum evaluation. Arithmetic transform theory offers a method for computing trigonometrical transforms with minimal number of multiplications. In this paper, the proposed algorithms for the arithmetic Fourier transform are surveyed. A new arithmetic transform for computing the discrete Hartley transform is introduced: the Arithmetic Hartley transform. The interpolation process is shown to be the key element of the arithmetic transform theory.

Fourier Eigenfunctions, Uncertainty Gabor Principle and Isoresolution Wavelets

Shape-invariant signals under Fourier transform are investigated leading to a class of eigenfunctions for the Fourier operator. The classical uncertainty Gabor-Heisenberg principle is revisited and the concept of isoresolution in joint time-frequency analysis is introduced. It is shown that any Fourier eigenfunction achieve isoresolution. It is shown that an isoresolution wavelet can be derived from each known wavelet family by a suitable scaling.

A Row-parallel 8$\times$8 2-D DCT Architecture Using Algebraic Integer Based Exact Computation

An algebraic integer (AI) based time-multiplexed row-parallel architecture and two final-reconstruction step (FRS) algorithms are proposed for the implementation of bivariate AI-encoded 2-D discrete cosine transform (DCT). The architecture directly realizes an error-free 2-D DCT without using FRSs between row-column transforms, leading to an 8$\times$8 2-D DCT which is entirely free of quantization errors in AI basis. As a result, the user-selectable accuracy for each of the coefficients in the FRS facilitates each of the 64 coefficients to have its precision set independently of others, avoiding the leakage of quantization noise between channels as is the case for published DCT designs. The proposed FRS uses two approaches based on (i) optimized Dempster-Macleod multipliers and (ii) expansion factor scaling. This architecture enables low-noise high-dynamic range applications in digital video processing that requires full control of the finite-precision computation of the 2-D DCT. The proposed architectures and FRS techniques are experimentally verified and validated using hardware implementations that are physically realized and verified on FPGA chip. Six designs, for 4- and 8-bit input word sizes, using the two proposed FRS schemes, have been designed, simulated, physically implemented and measured. The maximum clock rate and block-rate achieved among 8-bit input designs are 307.787 MHz and 38.47 MHz, respectively, implying a pixel rate of 8$\times$307.787$\approx$2.462 GHz if eventually embedded in a real-time video-processing system. The equivalent frame rate is about 1187.35 Hz for the image size of 1920$\times$1080. All implementations are functional on a Xilinx Virtex-6 XC6VLX240T FPGA device.
