Surface and Bulk Structural Properties of Single Crystalline Sr3Ru2O7

We report temperature and thermal-cycling dependence of surface and bulk structures of double-layered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 single crystals. The surface and bulk structures were investigated using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, respectively. Single-crystal XRD data is in good agreement with previous reports for the bulk structure with RuO6 octahedral rotation, which increases with decreasing temperature (~ 6.7(6)degrees at 300 K and ~ 8.1(2) degrees at 90 K). LEED results reveal that the octahedra at the surface are much more distorted with a higher rotation angle (~ 12 degrees between 300 and 80 K) and a slight tilt ((4.5\pm2.5) degrees at 300 K and (2.5\pm1.7) degrees at 80 K). While XRD data confirms temperature dependence of the unit cell height/width ratio (i.e. lattice parameter c divided by the average of parameters a and b) found in a prior neutron powder diffraction investigation, both bulk and surface structures display little change with thermal cycles between 300 and 80 K.

Probing Local Variations of Superconductivity on the Surface of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 Single Crystals

The spatially resolved electrical transport properties have been studied on the surface of optimally-doped superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 single crystal by using a four-probe scanning tunneling microscopy. While some non-uniform contrast appears near the edge of the cleaved crystal, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals mostly uniform contrast. For the regions that showed uniform SEM contrast, a sharp superconducting transition at TC = 22.1 K has been observed with a transition width (delta)Tc = 0.2 K. In the non-uniform contrast region, TC is found to vary between 19.6 and 22.2 K with (delta)Tc from 0.3 to 3.2 K. The wavelength dispersive x-ray spectroscopy reveals that Co concentration remains 7.72% in the uniform region, but changes between 7.38% and 7.62% in the non-uniform region. Thus the variations of superconductivity are associated with local compositional change.

Point-contact spectroscopic studies on normal and superconducting AFe_2As_2-type iron-pnictide single crystals

Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy (PCARS) is applied to investigate the gap structure in iron pnictide single crystal superconductors of the AFe_2As_2 (A=Ba, Sr) family ("Fe-122"). The observed point-contact junction conductance curves, G(V), can be divided into two categories: one where Andreev reflection is present for both (Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4})Fe_2As_2 and Ba(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})_2As_2, and the other with a V^{2/3} background conductance universally observed extending even up to 100 meV for Sr_{0.6}Na_{0.4}Fe_2As_2 and Sr(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})_2As_2. The latter is also observed in point-contact junctions on the nonsuperconducting parent compound BaFe_2As_2. Mesoscopic phase-separated coexistence of magnetic and superconducting orders is considered to explain distinct behaviors in the superconducting samples. For Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe_2As_2, double peaks due to Andreev reflection with strongly-sloping background are frequently observed for point-contacts on freshly-cleaved c-axis surfaces. If normalized by a background baseline and analyzed by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, the data show a gap size ~3.0-4.0 meV with 2Δ_0/k_BT_c ~ 2.0-2.6, consistent with the smaller gap size reported in the LnFeAsO family ("Fe-1111"). For the Ba(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})_2As_2, G(V) curves typically display a zero-bias conductance peak.

Evidence for Three-Dimensionality in the Fermi Surface Topology of Layered Electron Doped Ba(Fe1-XCox)2As2 Iron Superconductors

The electronic structure of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1- xCox)2As2 has been measured with Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. The data reveal a marked photon energy dependence of points in momentum space where the bands cross the Fermi energy, a distinctive and direct signature of three-dimensionality in the Fermi surface topology. By providing a unique example of high temperature superconductivity hosted in layered compounds with three-dimensional electronic structure, these findings suggest that the iron-arsenides are unique materials, quite different from the cuprates high temperature superconductors.

Surface Geometric and Electronic Structure of BaFe2As2(001)

BaFe2As2 exhibits properties characteristic of the parent compounds of the newly discovered iron (Fe)-based high-TC superconductors. By combining the real space imaging of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) with momentum space quantitative Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) we have identified the surface plane of cleaved BaFe2As2 crystals as the As terminated Fe-As layer - the plane where superconductivity occurs. LEED and STM/S data on the BaFe2As2(001) surface indicate an ordered arsenic (As) - terminated metallic surface without reconstruction or lattice distortion. It is surprising that the STM images the different Fe-As orbitals associated with the orthorhombic structure, not the As atoms in the surface plane.

Directional field-induced metallization of quasi-one-dimensional Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$

We report a detailed magnetotransport study of the highly anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional oxide Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ whose in-chain electrical resistivity diverges below a temperature $T_{\rm min} \sim$ 25 K. For $T < T_{\rm min}$, a magnetic field applied parallel to the conducting chain induces a large negative magnetoresistance and ultimately, the recovery of a metallic state. We show evidence that this insulator/metal crossover is a consequence of field-induced suppression of a density-wave gap in a highly one-dimensional conductor. At the highest fields studied, there is evidence for the possible emergence of a novel superconducting state with an onset temperature $T_c >$ 10 K.

59Co and 75As NMR Investigation of the Lightly Doped Ba[Fe(1-x)Co(x)]2As2 (x =0.02, 0.04)

We investigate the electronic properties of Ba[Fe(1-x)Co(x)]2As2 (x =0.02, 0.04) in the lightly electron-doped regime by 59Co and 75As NMR. We demonstrate that Co doping significantly suppresses the magnetic ordering temperature to the SDW state, T_{SDW}. Furthermore, ordered moments below T_{SDW} exhibit large distribution. Strong spin fluctuations remain even below T_{SDW}, persisting all the way down to 4.2 K. We find no signature of additional freezing of spin degrees of freedom unlike the case of the lightly hole-doped stripe phase of the cuprates.

Static and Dynamic Magnetism in Underdoped Superconductor BaFe$_{1.92}$Co$_{0.08}$As$_2$

We report neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of BaFe$_{1.92}$Co$_{0.08}$As$_2$. The magnetic Bragg peak intensity is reduced by 6 % upon cooling through T$_C$. The spin dynamics exhibit a gap of 8 meV with anisotropic three-dimensional (3d) interactions. Below T$_C$ additional intensity appears at an energy of $\sim$4.5(0.5) meV similar to previous observations of a spin resonance in other Fe-based superconductors. No further gapping of the spin excitations is observed below T$_C$ for energies down to 2 meV. These observations suggest the redistribution of spectral weight from the magnetic Bragg position to a spin resonance demonstrating the direct competition between static magnetic order and superconductivity.

Small anisotropy, weak thermal fluctuations, and high field superconductivity in Co-doped iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We performed high-field magnetotransport and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of the 122-phase iron pnictide Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. Unlike the HTS cuprates and 1111-phase oxypnictides, Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 showed practically no broadening of the resistive transitions under magnetic fields up to 45 T. The mass anisotropy gamma = Hc2ab/Hc2c deduced from the slopes of the upper critical field dHc2ab/dT = 4.9T/K and dHc2c/dT = 2.5T/K decreases from ~2 near Tc, to ~1.5 at lower temperatures. We observed the irreversibility field close to Hc2, and a rather unusual symmetric volume pinning force curve Fp(H) suggestive of strong pinning nano-structure.

Two-dimensional resonant magnetic excitation in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of superconducting BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 reveal a magnetic excitation located at wavevectors (1/2 1/2 L) in tetragonal notation. On cooling below TC, a clear resonance peak is observed at this wavevector with an energy of 8.6(0.5) meV, corresponding to 4.5(0.3) kBTC. This is in good agreement with the canonical value of 5 kBTC observed in the cuprates. The spectrum shows strong dispersion in the tetragonal plane but very weak dispersion along the c-axis, indicating that the magnetic fluctuations are two-dimensional in nature. This is in sharp contrast to the anisotropic three dimensional spin excitations seen in the undoped parent compounds.

Renormalized behavior and proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point in BaCo$_2$As$_2$

We report synthesis and single crystal measurements of magnetic, transport and thermal properties of single crystalline BaCo$_2$As$_2$ as well as first principles calculations of the electronic structure and magnetic behavior. These results show that BaCo$_2$As$_2$ is a highly renormalized paramagnet in proximity to a quantum critical point, presumably of ferromagnetic character and that BaFeNiAs$_2$ behaves similarly. These results are discussed in relation to the properties of Ba(Fe,Co)$_2$As$_2$ and Ba(Fe,Ni)$_2$As$_2$, which are superconducting for low Co and Ni concentrations.

Spin susceptibility, phase diagram, and quantum criticality in the electron-doped high Tc Superconductor Ba[Fe(1-x)Co(x)]2As2

We report a systematic investigation of Ba[Fe(1-x)Co(x)]2As2 based on transport and 75-As NMR measurements, and establish the electronic phase diagram. We demonstrate that doping progressively suppresses the uniform spin susceptibility and low frequency spin fluctuations. The optimum superconducting phase emerges at x_c~0.08 when the tendency toward spin ordering completely diminishes. Our findings point toward the presence of a quantum critical point near x_c between the SDW (spin density wave) and superconducting phases.

Evidence for Strong Itinerant Spin Fluctuations in the Normal State of CeFeAsO(0.89)F(0.11) Iron-Oxypnictides

The electronic structure in the normal state of CeFeAsO0.89F0.11 oxypnictide superconductors has been investigated with x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy. All the data exhibit signatures of Fe d-electron itinerancy. Exchange multiplets appearing in the Fe 3s core level indicate the presence of itinerant spin fluctuations. These findings suggest that the underlying physics and the origin of superconductivity in these materials are likely to be quite different from those of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. These materials provide opportunities for elucidating the role of magnetic fluctuations in high-temperature superconductivity.

Charge order in LuFe2O4: antiferroelectric ground state and coupling to magnetism

X-ray scattering by multiferroic LuFe2O4 is reported. Below 320 K, superstructure reflections indicate an incommensurate charge order with propagation close to (1/3,1/3,3/2). The corresponding charge configuration, also found by electronic structure calculations as most stable, contains polar Fe/O double-layers with antiferroelectric stacking. Diffuse scattering at 360 K, with (1/3,1/3,0) propagation, indicates ferroelectric short-range correlations between neighboring double-layers. The temperature dependence of the incommensuration indicates that charge order and magnetism are coupled.

Phonon softening and anomalous mode near the $x_{c}=0.5$ quantum critical point in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_4$

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to measure the temperature dependent phonon dispersion in Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$RuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.4$, 0.6). The in-plane $Σ_{4}$ octahedral tilt mode softens significantly at the zone boundary of the high temperature tetragonal (HTT) \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} structure as the temperature approaches the transition to a low temperature orthorhombic (LTO) \textit{Pbca} phase. This behavior is similar to that in La$_2$CuO$_4$, but a new inelastic feature that is not found in the cuprate is present. An anomalous phonon mode is observed at energy transfers greater than the $Σ_{4}$ albeit with similar dispersion. This anomalous phonon mode never softens below $\sim 5$ meV, even for temperatures below the HTT-LTO transition. This mode is attributed to the presence of intrinsic structural disorder within the \textit{I4}$_{\mathit{1}}$\textit{/acd} tetragonal structure of the doped ruthenate.

Pressure effects on the electron-doped high Tc superconductor BaFe(2-x)Co(x)As(2)

Application of pressures or electron-doping through Co substitution into Fe sites transforms the itinerant antiferromagnet BaFe(2)As(2) into a superconductor with the Tc exceeding 20K. We carried out systematic transport measurements of BaFe(2-x)Co(x)As(2) superconductors in pressures up to 2.5GPa, and elucidate the interplay between the effects of electron-doping and pressures. For the underdoped sample with nominal composition x = 0.08, application of pressure strongly suppresses a magnetic instability while enhancing Tc by nearly a factor of two from 11K to 21K. In contrast, the optimally doped x=0.20 sample shows very little enhancement of Tc=22K under applied pressure. Our results strongly suggest that the proximity to a magnetic instability is the key to the mechanism of superconductivity in iron-pnictides.

NMR measurements of intrinsic spin susceptibility in LaFeAsO(0.9)F(0.1)

We will probe the intrinsic behavior of spin susceptibility chi_(spin) in the LaFeAsO(1-x)F(x) superconductor (x ~ 0.1, Tc ~ 27K) using 19-F and 75-As NMR techniques. Our new results firmly establish the pseudo-gap behavior with Delta_(PG)/kB ~ 140K. The estimated magnitude of chi_(spin) at 290K, ~1.8x10^(-4) [emu/mol-Fe], is approximately twice larger than that in high Tc cuprates. We also show that chi_(spin) levels off below ~50K down to Tc.

Spin-lozenge thermodynamics and magnetic excitations in Na$_3$RuO$_4$

We report inelastic and elastic neutron scattering, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements of polycrystalline sodium ruthenate (Na$_3$RuO$_4$). Previous work suggests this material consists of isolated tetramers of $S=3/2$ Ru$^{5+}$ ions in a so-called "lozenge" configuration. Using a Heisenberg antiferromagnet Hamiltonian, we analytically determine the energy eigenstates for general spin $S$. From this model, the neutron scattering cross-sections for excitations associated with spin-3/2 spin-tetramer configurations is determined. Comparison of magnetic susceptibility and inelastic neutron scattering results shows that the proposed "lozenge" model is not distinctly supported, but provides evidence that the system may be better described as a pair of non-interacting inequivalent dimers, \textit{i.e} double dimers. However, the existence of long-range magnetic order below $T_c \approx 28$ K immediately questions such a description. Although no evidence of the lozenge model is observed, future studies on single crystals may further clarify the appropriate magnetic Hamiltonian.
