Heavy-Electron Behavior and Structural Change in Ca1.7Sr0.3RuO4

Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is an unconventional superconductor with a tetragonal structure, whereas Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ is a Mott insulator with orthorhombic symmetry. The substituted Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$ has yielded a rich phase diagram that is just beginning to be explored in detail. Experimental investigation of the resistivity $ρ$, susceptibility $χ$, specific heat C$_p$, Hall coefficient R$_H$, and X-ray diffraction of Ca$_{1.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$RuO$_4$ reveals a structural phase transition near T$_0$ = 190 K and heavy-Fermion (HF) behavior below a coherence temperature T$^*$ $\sim$ 10 K, resembling that of the $\it{f}$-electron HF compound UPt$_3$. The observation of T$^2$-dependence of $ρ$ below $\sim$ 0.5 K suggests a Fermi-liquid ground state. Based upon our data and theoretical calculations, we argue that the structural change at T$_0$ may be responsible for the formation of the HF state.

Temperature Dependence of the Magnetic Penetration Depth in the Vortex State of the Pyrochlore Superconductor, Cd2Re2O7

We report transverse field and zero field muon spin rotation studies of the superconducting rhenium oxide pyrochlore, Cd2Re2O7. Transverse field measurements (H=0.007 T) show line broadening below Tc, which is characteristic of a vortex state, demonstrating conclusively the type-II nature of this superconductor. The penetration depth is seen to level off below about 400 mK (T/Tc~0.4), with a rather large value of lambda (T=0)~7500A. The temperature independent behavior below ~ 400 mK is consistent with a nodeless superconducting energy gap. Zero-field measurements indicate no static magnetic fields developing below the transition temperature.

Fluctuation Effects on the Physical Properties of Cd2Re2O7 Near 200 K

Experimental investigation of the resistivity $ρ$, susceptibility $χ$, specific heat C$_p$, and Hall coefficient R$_H$ of the pyrochlore Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$ reveals the presence of a continuous phase transition of uncertain origin with critical temperature T* = 200 K. Electron and X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that a commensurate structural transformation accompanies the changes in the electronic properties, implying that lattice as well as electronic degrees of freedom are involved in the transition. Remarkable scaling relationships between $ρ$, $χ$, and C$_p$ are observed, indicating that fluctuations are crucial in the transition regime. Scenarios involving both spin and ionic density fluctuations are considered in the evaluation of the data. Although the observed structural transition suggests that ionic density fluctuations are likely to be important, a scaling relationship between $ρ$ and $χ$ over a wide temperature range suggests that spin fluctuations may be playing a role as well.

Superconductivity in the Correlated Pyrochlore Cd_2Re_2O_7

We report the observation of superconductivity in high-quality Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$ single crystals with room-temperature pyrochlore structure. Resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements establish an onset transition temperature T$_c^{onset}$ = 1.47 K with transition width $Δ$T$_c$ = 0.25 K. In applied magnetic field, the resistive transition shows a type-II character, with an approximately linear temperature-dependence of the upper critical field H$_{c2}$. The bulk nature of the superconductivity is confirmed by the specific heat jump with $Δ$C = 37.9 mJ/mol-K. Using the $γ$ value extracted from normal-state specific heat data, we obtain $Δ$C/$γ$T$_c$ = 1.29, close to the weak coupling BCS value. In the normal state, a negative Hall coefficient below 100 K suggests electron-like conduction in this material. The resistivity exhibits a quadratic T-dependence between 2 and 60 K, i.e., $ρ=ρ_0$+AT$^2$, indicative of Fermi-liquid behavior. The values of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio A/$γ^2$ and the Wilson ratio are comparable to that for strongly correlated materials.

Observation of Andreev Surface Bound States in the 3-K phase Region of Sr_2RuO_4

The tunneling spectrum of the superconducting phase with T_c ~ 3.0 K has been measured in the Ru-embedded region of Sr_2RuO_4 using cleaved junctions. A sharp zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) has been observed below 3 K. All characteristics of this ZBCP suggest that it originates from Andreev surface bound states, indicating that the pairing in the 3-K phase is also non-s-wave. Below the bulk T_c of Sr_2RuO_4 (~1.5 K), a bell-shaped ZBCP was found. This supports that there is a phase transition in the 3-K phase region near the bulk T_c.

Unusual Hall Effect in Superconducting MgB$_2$ Films: Analogy to High-T$_c$ Cuprates

We have investigated the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Hall coefficient of two well-characterized superconducting MgB$_2$ films (T$_{c0}$=38.0 K) in both the normal and superconducting states. Our results show that the normal-state Hall coefficient R$_H$ is positive and increases with decreasing temperature, independent of the applied magnetic field. Below T$_c$(H), R$_H$ decreases rapidly with temperature and changes sign before it reaches zero. The position and magnitude at which R$_H$ shows a minimum depends on the applied field. Quantitative analysis of our data indicates that the Hall response of MgB$_2$ behaves very similarly to that of high-T$_c$ cuprates: R$_H$ $\propto$ T and cot$θ_H$ $\propto$ T$^2$ in the normal state, and a sign reversal of R$_H$ in the mixed state. This suggests that the B-B layers in MgB$_2$, like the Cu-O planes in high-T$_c$ cuprates, play an important role in the electrical transport properties.

Electrical Transport Properties of Single Crystal Sr3Ru2O7: The Possible Existence of an Antiferromagnetic Instability at Low Temperatures

We report the results of Hall coefficient R_H and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on single crystalline samples of Sr3Ru2O7 grown by the floating zone method. R_H was found to be positive over the entire temperature range studied (0.3 - 300K). Its temperature (T) dependence follows closely that of the magnetic susceptibility, including a maximum at a characteristic temperature T=17 K. We show that R_H can be decomposed into normal and anomalous parts as in the case of skew scattering in heavy-fermion compounds and ferromagnetic metals. This, together with the observation that the longitudinal MR is greater than the transverse MR at the same magnetic field and temperature, suggests that magnetic fluctuations dominate the electrical transport properties in Sr3Ru2O7. We found a crossover in the sign of the MR at T*, from positive to negative as the temperature increased, for both the transverse and the longitudinal configurations. In addition, a non-monotonic behavior in the field dependence of the MR was found at low temperatures. These observations suggest that the magnetic correlations in Sr3Ru2O7 at ambient pressure undergo a qualitative change as the temperature is lowered. Above T*, they are dominated by ferromagnetic instability. However, below T*, the system crosses over to a different behavior, controlled possibly by a canted antiferromagnetic instability.

Selection Rule in Josephson Coupling between In and Sr2RuO4

We have studied the Josephson coupling between a conventional s-wave superconductor (In) and Sr2RuO4 and found that the coupling is allowed in the in-plane direction, but not along the c axis. This selection rule indicates that the symmetry of superconducting order parameter of Sr2RuO4 is either p- or alternatively, purely d-wave. If Sr2RuO4 is a p-wave superconductor, as strongly favored by other experimental evidence, our result suggests that the pairing state of Sr2RuO4 is Gamma5 with d(k) = z(kx +/- iky), a nodeless state in which the spins of the superconducting electrons lie in the RuO2 planes.

Linear Field Dependence of the Normal-State In-Plane Magnetoresistance of Sr2RuO4

The transverse and longitudinal in-plane magnetoresistances in the normal state of superconducting Sr2RuO4 single crystals have been measured. At low temperatures, both of them were found to be positive with a linear magnetic-field dependence above a threshold field, a result not expected from electronic band theory. We argue that such behavior is a manifestation of a novel coherent state characterized by a spin pseudo gap in the quasi-particle excitation spectrum in Sr2RuO4.

Type Two Cuts, Bad Cuts and Very Bad Cuts

Type two cuts, bad cuts and very bad cuts are introduced by Keisler and Leth for studying the relationship between Loeb measure and U-topology of a hyperfinite time line in an $ω_1$-saturated nonstandard universe. The questions concerning the existence of those cuts are asked there. In this paper we answer, fully or partially, some of those questions by showing that: (1) type two cuts exist in any nonstandard model of Peano Arithmetic, (2) the $\aleph_1$-isomorphism property implies that bad cuts exist, but no bad cuts are very bad.

Compactness of Loeb Spaces

In this paper we show that the compactness of a Loeb space depends on its cardinality, the nonstandard universe it belongs to and the underlying model of set theory we live in. In section 1 we prove that Loeb spaces are compact under various assumptions, and in section 2 we prove that Loeb spaces are not compact under various other assumptions. The results in section 1 and section 2 give a quite complete answer to a question of D. Ross.
