Ground state fluctuations in finite Fermi and Bose systems

We consider a small and fixed number of fermions (bosons) in a trap. The ground state of the system is defined at T=0. For a given excitation energy, there are several ways of exciting the particles from this ground state. We formulate a method for calculating the number fluctuation in the ground state using microcanonical counting, and implement it for small systems of noninteracting fermions as well as bosons in harmonic confinement. This exact calculation for fluctuation, when compared with canonical ensemble averaging, gives considerably different results, specially for fermions. This difference is expected to persist at low excitation even when the fermion number in the trap is large.

The effect of interactions on Bose-Einstein condensation in a two-dimensional harmonic trap

A dilute bose gas in a quasi two-dimensional harmonic trap and interacting with a repulsive two-body zero-range potential of fixed coupling constant is considered. Using the Thomas-Fermi method, it is shown to remain in the same uncondensed phase as the temperature is lowered. Its density profile and energy are identical to that of an ideal gas obeying the fractional exclusion statistics of Haldane. PACS: ~03.75.Fi, 05.30.Jp, 67.40.Db, 05.30.-d

A two-dimensional interacting system obeying Fractional Exclusion Statistics

We consider N fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential interacting with a very short-range repulsive pair-wise potential. The ground-state energy of this system is obtained by performing a Thomas-Fermi as well as a self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculation. The two results are shown to agree even for a small number of particles. We next use the finite temperature Thomas-Fermi method to demonstrate that in the local density approximation, these interacting fermions are equivalent to a system of noninteracting particles obeying the Haldane-Wu fractional exclusion statistics. It is also shown that mapping onto to a system of N noninteracting quasi-particles enables us to predict the energies of the excited states of the N-body system.

The Weyl Series and the Trace formula: can we add them?

Periodic orbit expressions for the density of states lead to spurious results when directly used to calculate quantities of thermodynamic interest. This is because the trace formula is usually valid only for large energies while the calculations make use of it at all energies. We present a prescription for circumventing this problem by isolating contributions which arise from the inaccurate low-energy behavior, and are spurious, from other subdominant contributions which are physical and are not contained in the Weyl series. The method is tested by analyzing the fermionic grand partition function for a disk billiard and may readily be extended to other dynamical systems.

Harmonic Lattice Approximation and Density Correlations in the Calogero-Sutherland Model

For a one-dimensional model in which the two-body interactions are long-range and strong, the system almost crystallizes. The harmonic modes of such a lattice can be used to compute the ground state wave function and the dynamical density-density correlations. We use this method to calculate the density corrrelations in the Calogero-Sutherland model. We show numerically that the correlations obtained are quite accurate even if the coupling is not very large. Our method is considerably simpler than the ones used to derive the exact results, and yields expressions for the correlations which are easily plotted. Our equal-time correlations can be expanded in powers of the inverse coupling; we show that the two leading order terms agree with the exact results which are known for integer values of the coupling.

Applications of the Collective Field Theory for the Calogero-Sutherland Model

We use the collective field theory known for the Calogero-Sutherland model to study a variety of low-energy properties. These include the ground state energy in a confining potential upto the two leading orders in the particle number, the dispersion relation of sound modes with a comparison to the two leading terms in the low temperature specific heat, large amplitude waves, and single soliton solutions. The two-point correlation function derived from the dispersion relation of the sound mode only gives its nonoscillatory asymptotic behavior correctly, demonstrating that the theory is applicable only for the low-energy and long wavelength excitations of the system.

Novel correlations in two dimensions: Two-body problem

We discuss a many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two dimensions introduced recently by Murthy, Bhaduri and Sen. Apart from an analysis of some exact solutions in the many-body system, we analyze in detail the two-body problem which is completely solvable. We show that the solution of the two-body problem reduces to solving a known differential equation due to Heun. We show that the two-body spectrum becomes remarkably simple for large interaction strength and the level structure resembles that of the Landau Levels. We also clarify the "ultraviolet" regularization which is needed to define an inverse-square potential properly and discuss its implications for our model.

A Fermion-like description of condensed Bosons in a trap

A Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms, trapped in an axially symmetric harmonic potential, is considered. By averaging the spatial density along the symmetry direction over a length that preserves the aspect ratio, the system may be mapped on to a zero temperature noninteracting Fermi-like gas. The ``mock fermions'' have a state occupancy factor $(>>1)$ proportional to the ratio of the coherance length to the ``hard-core'' radius of the atom. The mapping reproduces the ground state properties of the condensate, and is used to estimate the vortex excitation energy analytically. The ``mock-fermion'' description predicts some novel collective excitation in the condensed phase.

Novel correlations in two dimensions: Some exact solutions

We construct a new many-body Hamiltonian with two- and three-body interactions in two space dimensions and obtain its exact many-body ground state for an arbitrary number of particles. This ground state has a novel pairwise correlation. A class of exact solutions for the excited states is also found. These excited states display an energy spectrum similar to the Calogero-Sutherland model in one dimension. The model reduces to an analog of the well-known trigonometric Sutherland model when projected on to a circular ring.

Fractional Exclusion Statistics and Two Dimensional Electron Systems

Using the Thomas-Fermi approximation, we show that an interacting two dimensional electron gas may be described in terms of fractional exclusion statistics at zero and finite temperatures when the interaction has a short-range component. We argue that a likely physical situation for this phenomenon to occur may exist in two dimensional quantum dots.

Haldane Exclusion Statistics and the Boltzmann Equation

We generalize the collision term in the one-dimensional Boltzmann-Nordheim transport equation for quasiparticles that obey the Haldane exclusion statistics. For the equilibrium situation, this leads to the ``golden rule'' factor for quantum transitions. As an application of this, we calculate the density response function of a one-dimensional electron gas in a periodic potential, assuming that the particle-hole excitations are quasiparticles obeying the new statistics. We also calculate the relaxation time of a nuclear spin in a metal using the modified golden rule.

Quantum Solitons in the Calogero-Sutherland Model

We show that the single quasi-particle Schrödinger equation for a certain form of one-body potential yields a stationary one soliton solution. The one-body potential is assumed to arise from the self- interacting charge distribution with the singular kernel of the Calogero-Sutherland model. The quasi-particle has negative or positive charge for negative or positive coupling constant of the interaction. The magnitude of the charge is unity only for the semion. It is also pointed out that for repulsive coupling, our equation is mathematically the same as the steady-state Smoluchowski equation of Dyson's Coulomb gas model.

Haldane exclusion statistics and the charge fractionalisation in chiral bags

It is proposed that the phenomenon of charge fractionalisation of the spatially confined particle in a topological chiral bag may be interpreted as a manifestation of the exclusion statistics proposed by Haldane. The fractional exclusion statistics parameter is just the fractional baryon charge $Q$ of the particle in this case. We also state the necessary conditions for Haldane fractional to occur for systems in higher dimensions.

Thomas-Fermi Method For Particles Obeying Generalized Exclusion Statistics

We use the Thomas-Fermi method to examine the thermodynamics of particles obeying Haldane exclusion statistics. Specifically, we study Calogero-Sutherland particles placed in a given external potential in one dimension. For the case of a simple harmonic potential (constant density of states), we obtain the exact one-particle spatial density and a {\it closed} form for the equation of state at finite temperature, which are both new results. We then solve the problem of particles in a $x^{2/3} ~$ potential (linear density of states) and show that Bose-Einstein condensation does not occur for any statistics other than bosons.

The Phase of the Riemann Zeta Function and the Inverted Harmonic Oscillator

The Argand diagram is used to display some characteristics of the Riemann Zeta function. The zeros of the Zeta function on the complex plane give rise to an infinite sequence of closed loops, all passing through the origin of the diagram. This leads to the analogy with the scattering amplitude, and an approximate rule for the location of the zeros. The smooth phase of the Zeta function along the line of the zeros is related to the quantum density of states of an inverted oscillator.

Effect of a magnetic flux line on the quantum beats in the Hénon-Heiles level density

The quantum density of states of the Hénon-Heiles potential displays a pronounced beating pattern. This has been explained by the interference of three isolated classical periodic orbits with nearby actions and periods. A singular magnetic flux line, passing through the origin, drastically alters the beats even though the classical Lagrangean equations of motion remain unchanged. Some of the changes can be easily understood in terms of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. However, we find that the standard periodic orbit theory does not reproduce the diffraction-like quantum effects on those classical orbits which intersect the singular flux line, and argue that corrections of relative order $\hbar$ are necessary to describe these effects. We also discuss the changes in the distribution of nearest-neighbour spacings in the eigenvalue spectrum, brought about by the flux line. pacs{PACS numbers: 05.45.+b, 02.50.+s,03.65.-w,03.65.Ge }

An improved calculation of the Third Virial Coefficient of a free anyon Gas

For three anyons confined in a harmonic oscillator, only the class of states that interpolate nonlinearly with the statistical parameter contributes to the third virial coefficient of a free anyon gas. Rather than evaluating the full three-body partition function as was done in an earlier publication (Phys. Rev. {\bf A46}, 4693 (1992)), here only the nonlinear contribution is calculated, thus avoiding delicate cancellations between the irrelevant linear part and the two-body partition function. Our numerical results are consistent with the simple analytical form suggested recently by Myrheim and Olaussen.
