Extremely asymmetric shears band in 143Sm

A dipole sequence has been observed and investigated in the 143 Sm nucleus populated through the heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reaction and studied using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) as the detection system. The sequence has been established as a Magnetic Rotation (MR) band primarily from lifetime measurements of the band members using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM). A configuration based on nine quasiparticles, with highly asymmetric angular momentum blades, has been assigned to the shears band in the light of the theoretical calculations within the framework of Shears mechanism with the Principal Axis Cranking (SPAC) model. This is hitherto the maximum number of quasiparticles along with the highest asymmetricity associated with a MR band. Further, as it has followed from the SPAC calculations, the contribution of the core rotation to the angular momentum of this shears band is substantial and greater than in any other similar sequence, at least in the neighbouring nuclei. This band can thus be perceived as a unique phenomenon of shears mechanism in operation at the limits of quasiparticle excitations, as manifested in MR band-like phenomena, evolving into collectivity.

Abrupt phase change of the core rotation in the 143 Sm nucleus

Dipole sequences in the 143 Sm nucleus have been investigated via the 124 Sn ( 24 Mg, 5n) reaction at E lab = 107 MeV using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA). The spin-parity of the associated levels have been firmly established from the spectroscopic measurement. Level lifetimes of several levels in the dipole bands have been measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method. The decreasing trend of the measured B(M1) and B(E2) transition strengths in one of the sequence (DB I) spells out its origin as Magnetic Rotation (MR). The trends of B(M1) and B(E2) in DB I are reproduced well in the theoretical calculations using the Shears mechanism with the Principal Axis Cranking (SPAC) model. However, the calculations fail to reproduce the sharp rise in the B(M1)/B(E2) ratio at the highest spins in DB I and the same has been interpreted from the decreasing of the core rotation along the sequence. The experimental observations along with the the theoretical calculations for the second dipole band (DB II), indicate that the core rotation, rather than the shears mechanism, is being favored for angular momentum generation. This represents a unique observation of forking of the shears band DB I from an abrupt phase change of the core from spherical into the deformed one.

Observation of a $γ$-band based on two-quasiparticle configuration in $^{70}$Ge

The structure of $^{70}$Ge has been studied through in-beam gamma ray spectroscopy. A new band structure is identified that leads to forking of the ground-state band into two excited bands. Band structures have been investigated using the microscopic triaxial projected shell model approach. The observed forking is demonstrated to result from almost simultaneous band crossing of the two neutron aligned and the γ-band built on this two-quasiparticle configuration with the ground-state band.

Crossing of large multiquasiparticle magnetic-rotation bands in $^{198}$Bi

High-spin states in the doubly-odd $^{198}$Bi nucleus have been studied by using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{16}$O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. $γ-γ$ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

Linear Polarization Measurements for High-Spin States in 146Gd

A γ-ray linear polarization measurement has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 146Gd nucleus. High-spin states in this nucleus were populated in a reaction 115In + 34S at 140 MeV incident energy. Linearly polarized γ - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the π(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to Jπ = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.

Superdeformation and alpha - cluster structure in 35Cl

A superdeformed (SD) band has been identified in a non - alpha - conjugate nucleus 35Cl. It crosses the negative parity ground band above 11/2- and becomes the yrast at 15/2-. Lifetimes of all relevant states have been measured to follow the evolution of collectivity. Enhanced B(E2), B(E1) values as well as energetics provide evidences for superdeformation and existence of parity doublet cluster structure in an odd-A nucleus for the first time in A = 40 region. Large scale shell model calculations assign (sd)16(pf)3 as the origin of these states. Calculated spectroscopic factors correlate the SD states in 35Cl to those in 36Ar.

Small Quadrupole Deformation for the Dipole Bands in 112In

High spin states in $^{112}$In were investigated using $^{100}$Mo($^{16}$O, p3n) reaction at 80 MeV. The excited level have been observed up to 5.6 MeV excitation energy and spin $\sim$ 20$\hbar$ with the level scheme showing three dipole bands. The polarization and lifetime measurements were carried out for the dipole bands. Tilted axis cranking model calculations were performed for different quasi-particle configurations of this doubly odd nucleus. Comparison of the calculations of the model with the B(M1) transition strengths of the positive and negative parity bands firmly established their configurations.

Systematics of Anti magnetic rotation in even-even Cd isotopes

The lifetimes for the high spin levels of the yrast band of $^{110}$Cd has been measured. The estimated B(E2) values decrease with increase in angular momentum. This is the characteristic of Anti magnetic rotation as reported in $^{106,108}$Cd. However, alignment behavior of $^{110}$Cd is completely different from its even-even neighbors. A model based on classical particle plus rotor has been used to explore the underlying systematics and develop a self consistent picture for the observed behavior of these isotopes.

Band crossing in Shears band of $^{108}$Cd

The level lifetimes have been measured for a Shears band of $^{108}$Cd which exhibits bandcrossing. The observed level energies and B(M1) rates have been successfully described by a semi-classical geometric model based on shear mechanism. In this geometric model, the bandcrossing in Shears band has been described as the reopening of the angle between the blades of a shear.

Observation of isomeric decays and the high spin states in doubly-odd 208Fr

Neutron deficient isotopes of Francium (Z=87, N=121-123) as excited nuclei were produced in the fusion-evaporation reaction: 197Au(16O,xn)[213-x]Fr at 100 MeV. The gamma-rays from the residues were observed through the high sensitivity Germanium Clover detector array INGA. The decay of the high spin states and the isomeric states of the doubly-odd 208Fr nuclei, identified from the known sequence of ground state transitions, were observed. The half lives of the 194(2) keV isomeric transition, known from earlier observations, was measured to be 233(18) ns. A second isomeric transition at 383(2) keV and half life of 33(7) ns was also found. The measured half lives were compared with the corresponding single particle estimates, based on a the level scheme obtained from the experiment.

Absence of M2 Retardation in $^{35}Cl$: Evidence for Stronger Isospin-Mixing Effects in A=35 Mirror Nuclei

The lifetime of the 3163 keV, 7/2$^-$ isomeric state in $^{35}Cl$ that decays by a stretched M2 transition to the $3/2^+$ ground state, has been re-measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, by gating on the 1185 keV transition which directly feeds this state. This eliminates the uncertainties in the measurement arising from the direct feedings from the continuum. A mean life of 0.6$^{+0.5}_{-0.2}$ ps has been obtained from the present work. This is considerably smaller than the adopted value 45.3(6) ps. Implication of this major reduction in the lifetime has been pointed out.
