Next-to-leading order corrections to W+2 jet and Z+2 jet production at hadron colliders

We report on QCD radiative corrections to the processes p pbar --> W + 2 jets and p pbar --> Z + 2 jets at the Tevatron. These processes are included in the Monte Carlo program MCFM, which allows the calculation of any infra-red finite variable at next-to-leading order. Due to a better theoretical description of jets at next-to-leading order, some distributions exhibit significant corrections. As expected, the unphysical dependence of theoretical predictions upon the renormalization and factorization scales is greatly reduced compared to leading order. As an example of the predictions that may now be made with MCFM, we present a next-to-leading order estimate of the heavy flavor content of jets produced in association with vector bosons.

B Physics at the Tevatron: Run II and Beyond

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the prospects for B physics at the Tevatron. The work was carried out during a series of workshops starting in September 1999. There were four working groups: 1) CP Violation, 2) Rare and Semileptonic Decays, 3) Mixing and Lifetimes, 4) Production, Fragmentation and Spectroscopy. The report also includes introductory chapters on theoretical and experimental tools emphasizing aspects of B physics specific to hadron colliders, as well as overviews of the CDF, D0, and BTeV detectors, and a Summary.

Heavy Quark Production at High Energy

We report on QCD radiative corrections to heavy quark production valid at high energy. The formulae presented will allow a matched calculation of the total cross section which is correct at $O(\as^3)$ and includes resummation of all terms of order $\as^3 [\as \ln (s/m^2)]^n$. We also include asymptotic estimates of the effect of the high energy resummation. A complete description of the calculation of the heavy quark impact factor is included in an appendix.

Report of the QCD Tools Working Group

We report on the activities of the ``QCD Tools for heavy flavors and new physics searches'' working group of the Run II Workshop on QCD and Weak Bosons. The contributions cover the topics of improved parton showering and comparisons of Monte Carlo programs and resummation calculations, recent developments in Pythia, the methodology of measuring backgrounds to new physics searches, variable flavor number schemes for heavy quark electro-production, the underlying event in hard scattering processes, and the Monte Carlo MCFM for NLO processes.

Radiative corrections to Zb{\bar b} production

We report on QCD radiative corrections to the process, p\bar{p} to Zb\bar{b} in the approximation in which the b-quark is considered massless. The implementation of this process in the general purpose Monte Carlo program MCFM is discussed in some detail. These results are used to investigate backgrounds to Higgs boson production in the ZH channel. We investigate the Higgs mass range (100 GeV < m_H < 130 GeV) for the Tevatron running at sqrt{s}=2 TeV.

An update on vector boson pair production at hadron colliders

We present numerical results (including full one-loop QCD corrections) for the processes p p-bar and pp -> W+ W-, W+/- Z/gamma* and Z/gamma* Z/gamma* followed by the decay of the massive vector bosons into leptons. In addition to their intrinsic importance as tests of the standard model, these processes are also backgrounds to conjectured non-standard model processes. Because of the small cross sections at the Tevatron, full experimental control of these backgrounds will be hard to achieve. This accentuates the need for up-to-date theoretical information. A comparison is made with earlier work and cross section results are presented for p p-bar collisions at sqrt{s}=2 TeV and pp collisions at sqrt{s}=14 TeV. Practical examples of the use of our calculations are presented.

Strong radiative corrections to W b bbar production in p pbar collisions

We calculate the strong radiative corrections to the process p pbar -> W(->e nu) g^*(->b bbar). At the Tevatron this process is the largest background to the associated Higgs boson production p pbar -> W(-> e nu) H(-> b bbar). The calculation is based on the subtraction procedure, and the corrections are found to be significant.

W and Z transverse momentum distributions: resummation in qT-space

We describe an alternative approach to the prediction of W and Z transverse momentum distributions based on an extended version of the DDT formula. The resummation of large logarithms, mandatory at small qT, is performed in qT-space, rather than in the impact parameter b. The leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading towers of logarithms are identical in the b-space and qT-space approaches. We argue that these terms are sufficient for W and Z production in the region in which perturbation theory can be trusted. Direct resummation in qT-space provides a unified description of vector boson transverse momentum distributions valid at both large and small qT.

Vector boson production in hadronic collisions

We consider the production of $γ^*, W$ and $Z$ vector bosons in hadron-hadron collisions in perturbative QCD. We present results from a new numerical program which gives a full description of the production of the vector bosons and of their decay products. At small $\qt$ the calculation includes resummation of large logarithms and non-perturbative effects. The resummation is matched with the full $O(α_S)$ calculation. In addition, the program correctly reproduces the known $O(α_S)$ cross section when integrated over $\qt$. Besides presenting results for $W$ and $Z$ production at the Tevatron, we also review constraints on the non-perturbative functions using fixed target data on lepton pair production, and make several observations on this topic.

The evolution of parton distributions beyond leading order: the singlet case

A complete description of the calculation of anomalous dimensions (GLAP splitting functions) is given for parton distributions which appear in space-like processes. The calculation is performed in the light-cone gauge. The results are in agreement with the previous results of Furmanski and Petronzio.

QCD Scaling Violation at Small x

We investigate the evolution of parton densities at small values of the momentum fraction, x, by including resummed anomalous dimensions in the renormalization group equations. The resummation takes into account the leading-logarithmic contributions (α_S \ln x)^k given by the BFKL equation and the next-to-leading-logarithmic corrections from quark evolution. We present numerical results for the parton densities and the deep inelastic structure function F_2.
