Coherent Backscattering of Light by Cold Atoms

Light propagating in an optically thick sample experiences multiple scattering. It is now known that interferences alter this propagation, leading to an enhanced backscattering, a manifestation of weak localization of light in such diffuse samples. This phenomenon has been extensively studied with classical scatterers. In this letter we report the first experimental evidence for coherent backscattering of light in a laser-cooled gas of Rubidium atoms.

Pseudoscalar decay constants at large N_c

In the large N_c limit, the variables required to analyze the low energy structure of QCD in the framework of an effective field theory necessarily include the degrees of freedom of the eta'. We evaluate the decay constants of the pseudoscalar nonet to one loop within this extended framework and show that, as a consequence of the anomalous dimension of the singlet axial current, some of the effective coupling constants depend on the running scale of QCD. The calculation relies on a simultaneous expansion in powers of momenta, quark masses and 1/N_c. Talk given at the Workshop on Nonperturbative Methods in Quantum Field Theory, NITP/CSSM, University of Adelaide, Australia, Feb. 1998.

The Structure Function Ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) at small x

We present the structure function ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at a nominal incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The kinematic range 0.0001 < x < 0.7 and 0.01< Q^2 < 70 GeV^2 is covered. For values of $x$ less than $0.002$ both ratios indicate saturation of shadowing at values compatible with photoabsorption results.
